1979 ,r — — ' — ■' - A Y?AJi At The Movies OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY ATLAMTAOA ITED PG RATED As you have probably noticed, the Fox marquee on the preceding page mentions something about A Year at the Movies. That ' s what was chosen as the theme of this year ' s book. Movies seemed an appropriate theme for several reasons. In the past year or two, there has been a tremendous rise in the popularity of movies. Star Wars became the top money-making film of all time, and films such as Saturday Night Fever and Grease were not far behind. Long lines going into the theatres were not uncommon on Friday or Saturday nights. But sitting in a dark theatre with eyes staring at a series of flickering pictures was not the only way to get entertainment from a movie. The music from a film was often bigger than the film itself, as in the case of You Light Up My Life. Songs from such movies as Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Sgt. Pepper ' s Lonely Hearts ' Club Band, and even the James Bond flick The Spy Who Loved Me, could be found in the Top Forty week after week. Not only could you listen to all this music, you could also dance to it! After watching John Travolta hustle, millions of young people also caught the fever, and discos became a big business in America. While big kids lived out their dreams on the dance floor, the little kids were not ignored. A surprised Santa found himself filling thousands of requests for Darth Vadar dolls, light sabers, and rocket ships. Little girls dreamed of Luke Skywalker and long ago in a galaxy far away. And the movies themselves could be found in places other than the theatres. Instructional films could be found in the classroom. Huge sums of money were paid by the networks to acquire for television such blockbuster movies as Gone With The Wind, and there were important made-for-television movies, such as Roots. For all these reasons, and more, the 1979 Yamacraw staff spent a year looking at the movies. M A S H, as you will recall, lacked a traditional plot, but consisted mainly of scenes of the day-to-day life of the doctors and nurses living in the army camp. Life at Oglethorpe shares this lack of a unified plot. The everyday lives of a group of students and faculty at a small college in a large Southern town do, however, provide a delightful theme. These students are from a wide range of backgrounds. As a matter of fact, the story begins as they all arrive from various states of the union, as well as foreign countries, and are faced with the prospect of living and working together on the small university campus. Complications naturally follow as classes and other activities begin. But these are worked out, for the most part, as the story moves along toward a happy ending and summer vacation. As for the actors in the drama, they are superb. The cast is not as large as in some films about colleges, so every actor has to be at his best at all times to make up for the lack of numbers. In general, the players do not let us down. However, one scene does seem a bit strained. Several of the cast are shown laughing and unbelievably happy as they eat together in the campus cafeteria. This scene, 1 cannot help but believe, is a bit overacted. The sets and costumes provided for the film are excellent. The old gray stone buildings are reminiscent of the old castles of England, and give the production a sense of tradition. And yet, pervading this scene of the quiet college campus is a sense of the activity of the large city just beyond the university ' s gates. The costumes are also a perfect reminder that the story is actually set in the late Seventies. Straight-legged blue jeans and hair blown dry can be seen on both males and females. The women are often dressed in boots and full skirts halfway between their knees and ankles. All in all, Life at Oglethorpe is recommended to everyone. But, of course, mature audiences are best. 101 iililill ? jfes t-a i :  -- iTlCS Ni Ex JWl .®.«3Sfc«s -eSSi t , s ; Mmw, ' as IVrTYmvk , ,-— ' ■Jff iU .U — JJjgjjusic . . , AND TiY ' RE OFF! If you ' ve helped with one before, then you know what I mean, and you also know that it ' s practically impossible to complete the book without total cooperation from a lot of people. Sometimes you don ' t get that cooperation, but I would like to thank all those people who did so much extra and helped make this year ' s Yamacraw a success. First of all, I would like to thank Margie Johnson and Mark Lisicky for the fantastic artwork! I would like to also like to thank all the folks at Georgia Photographies for their help, especially with the FOX picture for the title page, and the specia l effects picture on p. 139. We could not have managed without Rita Llop ' s help. She gave us several important pictures that we couldn ' t have gotten anywhere else, and she worked in the darkroom for us when she really didn ' t have time. Thanks also to Brian Smith and others of The Stormy Petrel. The Yamacraw staff finally got their own camera this year, mainly because of a donation from Johns Pulpwood Co., and because of Bill Wolpin ' s help in securing the camera. Thank you, thank you! I also want to express my appreciation to Dean Thames, our sponsor, for his support. And finally, I have to thank Mr. James Hunter of Hunter Publishing Co. for his help and for always returning my frequent calls! To all of you Oglethorpe students, I hope you enjoy the book! — Robin Johns 140 • Winston-Salem HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY • North Carolrna James C. Hunter, Southeaslern District Manager 1979 I
