The changing face of Oglethorpe from old to new. n ■ya-T agae Oglethorpe College ' s history must be divided into two main chap- ters, separated by a gap of several decades. Old Oglethorpe was founded by Georgia Presbyter- ians in 1835 at Midway, Georgia, a village near Milledgeville. During the years before the civil war it grew and prospered, with a distinguished faculty and a fine student body. Joseph LeConte, the scientist, best typifies the former; the poet, Sidney Lanier, the latter. The chapel on the Mid- way campus was referred to as the finest college chapel in the United States at the time. Old Oglethorpe must be counted one of the casualties of Reconstruction. An attempt was made to save it by a move to Atlanta; to which the political center of the state had been moved. After a few years on a campus at the site of the present Atlanta City Hall, the school was closed in 1872. The new Oglethorpe was begun on the present campus through the efforts of Dr. Thornwell Jacobs. While the new school received much support from Presby- terians, it was reopened as an independent rather than a church-related college. The new charter was issued in 1913 and the first class enrolled in 1916. Dr. Jacobs served as president from its refounding until 1943. He was succeeded by Dr. Philip Weltner who aided the faculty greatly. College instead of University— but the feeling is still the same. The present program at Ogle- thorpe is an evolutionary out- growth of the plan which Dr. Philip Weltner originated around 1943. He was succeeded in the presidency by Dr. J. Whitney Bunting and Dr. Donald R. Wilson, both for short periods of time. Goodman Hall, a men ' s dormitory, was erected during this period. Dr. Donald Agnew assumed the office in 1958. During his tenure the 2,500 seat Field House was constructed where Oglethorpe ' s basketball Petrels play. Also Dr. Agnew strengthened the student body and faculty, and intro- duced evening classes. Dr. Paul R. Beall served as president from October, 1964 to June, 1967. Then Oglethorpe ' s present president, Dr. Paul K. Vonk, assumed the presidency in July, 1967, and under his administration the stu- dent body has been enlarged to the largest in the schools history. Oglethorpe has experienced a tremendous growth in every direction since Dr. Vonk took over. A three story, 170 female capacity dormitory has been built which has a large courtyard in the middle. The library has been re- modeled along with the main classroom building. A new student center has been added which has offices for all student functions and it also contains the new dining hall. ' ■ y OTr, % - S ' •; ' i ? • i.. ■ - N . r . 4 ' -A .V • - -£-;.- Me student Government Association The 1969-1970 Student Government Association tried to give the students of Oglethorpe College capable leader- ship but was severely hampered by the lack of student financial aid and moral backing. Many questions were raised as to why there was no money, but in the end there was never any clear ans- wer. The SGA did, though, set itself back on some semblance of financial footing by enacting a strong program of allocating its money. The SGA, head- ed by Bill Hudgins, showed that it had the ability to do a good job if it had the backing, but it was never given the financial chance. 1. William B. Hudgins . . . SGA President 2. The new coach played for Oglethorpe College during his college days. He has come back to lead our troops to a successful year. At Christmas break AP ranked Oglethorpe College 9th in small colleges and UP! gave us a vote of 11th in the nation. VL i • . 82 83 l, I, y m V L i- l! Florida 65 102 Georgia State 60 69 Mercer 61 67 Chattanooga 70 Grain and Norwood Lead O.C. to 17-9 Led by Ernie Grain ' s 19.3 game point average and 503 point total, and Willie Sheats ' 17.2 point average, 431 point total, and 250 rebounds, the Ogle- thorpe Petrels bounced to a very successful 17 and 9 season. Under Coach Tom Not vood ' s first year leadership, the Petrels were ranked ninth in the nation at one time, won the Citrus Invitation Tournament in December, and scored 1,993 points for a 76.6 game point average against their opponents. Randy Lee was third in scoring honors with 318 points, followed by John Poag with 232 points and 230 rebounds. Larry Walker had 163 points and 87 rebounds. Ken Erdoes sco-ed 119 points and 92 rebounds, Otis Ward shot 100 points and had 82 rebounds, David Hansford dumped in 65 points and 32 rebounds, Terry Schell got 35 points and 17 rebounds, and Gary Tassin scored 32 points and 39 rebounds. 1, Randy Lee 2 David Hansford 3. The students were led by high scorer Larry Eisenstein with 32 points, while the faculty countered with Ail-American Doug Alexander who scored 44 points, former Petrel star and now Petrel Coach Tom Norwood with 29 points, and tennis Coach Joe Dennis with 20 points. Dirty Phil Palmer and fingers Thomas led the faculty in all areas with no points at all, while Dubow, Walton, and Dean Amerson brought up the rear of the team. v 100 101 Petrel Baseball TO. A true fireball by nature, our Freshman Psychology major is a perfect example of one who is in love with life. She finds life very exciting, and Joyce feels more at ease with herself when she can get out and take long walks where I feel the most peace with the world and myself. I try to make the most out of Joyce Woodward 2 everything that I am doing. If I can bring a smile and a bit of cheer to one ' s heart, then I count the day as a success! As for hobbies, Joyce enjoys horseback riding, tennis, and travel. She has a constant desire to get involved in situations that interest her and that she believes need correcting. She has captured the hearts of many because of this desire to help and her love for meeting all types of people — reason enough for Joyce to be out Miss Yamacraw 70. Vonk The eleventh president in Oglethorpe ' s history, which dates back to 1835, and a member of Atlanta ' s First Presby- terian Church is Dr. Paul Kenneth Vonk. A dynamic man of many attributes, Dr. Vonk has strived to alleviate the fin- ancial problems of Oglethorpe to a point where it could stand on its ' ' eet, and he has succeeded in this task tre- mendously. Although there are a num- ber of problems left, Oglethorpe Col- lege is now beginning to unfold into a well known college with a physical plant that grows impressively every- day. As past president and vice-presi- dent of the Southern Society for Phil- osophy and Psychology, a former sec- retary-treasurer of the Florida Philo- sophical Association, and chairman of the higher education section of the Florida Education Association, Dr. Vonk has led Oglethorpe College to a future that appears stable both finan- cially and educationally. 1. In the 1970 Yamacraw, the goal of pleasing the Oglethorpe student has been strived for, and the staff trusts that it has been successful. Although the Yamacraw staff feels that it has presented an out- standing account of the 1969-1970 year, it has been hindered so greatly in producing this book that at points in the year the production of the Yamacraw was almost cancelled. This cancellation almost came about due to the fact that the Student Govern- ment Association was not given the backing it was due by the students of Oglethorpe. Granted, this lack of interest on the part of the students was mostly financial, but apathy played a large part in bringing about the down fall of the 1969-1970 SGA. Somehow, the Yamacraw survived all of the demon- strations, apathy, and freaks, and was brought to life by a responsible staff and a helpful administra- tion. As editor of the Yamacraw I would like to thank Bill Wolfe of Hunter Publishing Co. for his untiring help and understanding, RA and James Hunter for their faith, JB of Hunter for his artfull guidance, Jimmy Fitts for his moral support and photography help. Dr. Ben dejanes for being my faculty advisor and dinner companion so many times, WQXI-FM for soothing my ears during times of pain due to the lack of interest on the part of my staff.
