I ' oi those oL you who arc inembers o£ the Oglethorpe family, we hope the Yamacraw will provide vou with pleasant niciiiories ol a year well spent. For those ot you who are friends of Oglethorpe, Avc hope that the Yamacraw will give you a true glimpse of our school and thereby a Ijetter understanding of what we are trying to do. Oglethorpe is not just a school, but also an idea. The idea is to embody the principle that you cannot divide life into unrelated departments, but rather that life is a unit and must be seen as a whole. There are three things that we believe are essential to hfe: an understanding of yomself, creative citizenship and the ability to make a living. We have tried to incoiporate these talents into our program of education, as • vcll as our campus life. This is om- story for 1949 and it is deilicated to the participan ts in that story, the Oglethorjje Family. Johnson, the fighting Petiel Hoopsters )ni]jlctecl their 27 game schechile against strong (onipetition in fine tasliion. Although the retiun ol 7 lettermen was a tremendous help to the squad, the l)oys were laced Avith two important bandit aps. The first was tire presence ol strong om]jetition, mainly in the larger schools, such as Hoivard, WoHord. Mercer, and Florida State, all ol which have at least (i times as many male students to choose Irom as we do. Second, we are unfortunate in ha ing to ork in our small g ni wiiidi will always leave the boys heljiless at the hands of any fast-breaking competition on large coints. The overall record in our first year of Dixie Conference play was 11 and Ki. Several of these losses, however, came in the early jjart ol the season i hen the Petrels were jjlaying in .i (onlusiug antl disajjpointing man- ner. On January 14 at Newberry, S. C, the team suddeidy found itsell, as it surprised a highly lavored Ncwberrv fi e b) emerging i(torious in a squeaker, 44-11. .Alter that, ' a different team seemed to take the floor, as the Petrels played the slow conser ■ative type ball in which tliey were so effective. Although the squad began to hmction more and more as a iniit and not as indi iduals, it is probably more than just a co- incidence that it was about this time that Johnson seemed to find his shooting eve. After a slow start, he eventually piled up 363 points to pace the squad with a 14 jioint average in 26 games. I5ehind him was [immy Hinson with 208 tallies. Don Brennan and Jim Phillips both played a fine ijrand of ball and often dropped in points when they were needed most. It was also pleas- ing to observe the superb backboard control A hich Bob Findley and Ben Lorenz constantly siqj])lied irs. .-Mthough they ha e not been a sensation ia the statistics, the fine [)lay and steady improve- ments of freshmen Shelly Godkin and Ired Agel and juniors Jerry Quinn, Harry Martin, and Wally Smith have been a note of good cheer to all. They will certainly go a long way in filling the shoes of the men who graduate this year. Ci()AC:H , . Z. JOH.NSDN BASKETBALL SCHEDULE - 19481949 Dixie Ccnfcn ' in ■ (, antes t Overtime .
