YAMACRAW 1947-48 The Yearbook of Oglethorpe University Oglethorpe University, Georgia May, 1948 t ' 4 y y i «? • . FOREWORD What is the YAMACRAW? The YAMACRAW is a small book about a small college, put together by a few amateurs who, short on experience and funds and help, dared to hope they could have a yearbook anyhow. They know the YAMACRAW ' s faults; they ' ve known them so long and so well that they ' ve almost come to like them. They got the book out. What is the YAMACRAW ' s Theme? The Theme of the YAMACRAW is OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY, where a man equipped with couraere and vision and a battered old car dared to hope to make of a school that ..wasn ' t anemic; it was as dead as a catfish in a pine tree a Univer- sity that could set the pace for a region. To that man the YAMACRAW is dedicated. DEDICATION: TO THE MAN WITH THE PLAN To Dr. Philip Weltner, who after a life of service has scored yet another victory in his salvation of Oglethorpe University from oblivion and his origi- nation of the Oglethorpe Plan, this first post-war YAA ' ACRAW is respectfully and gratefully dedicated. The Oglethorpe Plan of education for making a life as well as for making a living Involves a course of studies which makes sense from first to last , those subjects devoted to living in the community and to human understeinding being required, with the student selecting under guidemce the group of studies which will prepare him to make a living. How the six Divisions of study at Oglethorpe fit into the Oglethorpe Plan is explained briefly in the appropriate faculty pages of the Yamacraw. ..  -. im sss - s ' « - ' r i If ' k THE PIlERSITy BOARD OF TRUSTEES HARRY SOMMERS, Chairman OTIS JACKSON, Vice-chairman R. The slick paper, new pictures and cuts, the small friendly size, and a large staff of assistants made the change-over a success. At the start of the school year 1947-4P Jack Brooks was Editor, Ken Steele Assistant Rditor, George Scott and Dick Stoller News Editors, Wally Crider Sports Editor, Ann Mason Feature Editor, Shirley Sanders Business Man- ager, Bill Rhodes and Gordon Bynum Advertising Managers, Joel Chandler Make-up Editor, Jewel Fisher, Ann Adams, Kitty Henson, Alice Callaway, Edgar Bodiford, Joe Martin Reporters, and Don West Faculty Advisor. When the horses were changed in midstream in the spring. Bill Rhodes be- came Editor, with Jay Hall Feature Editor, Wally Crider Sports Editor, Martha Mayson Art Editor, Rimer Etling Business Manager. Staff members are: Clare Tsanhour, Bob Snow, Alice Callaway, Jewel Fisher, Diane Himmer, Alice Gore, Shirley Sanders, Dick Stoller, Dick Griffiths, Boh Owens, Jack Fisher, and George Scott. Dr. J. J. Brooks is now Faculty Advisor. Unquestionably The Stormy Petrel is well-named. Tt has ridden through many storms in the past two years and the majority have been financial. There were occasions when the storm clouds were very dark and things looked hope- less, but The Stormy Petrel, the only bird that can fly in the face of a storm, made a successful flight, ending the school year in the black. The Stormy Petrel receives its support mainly from advertisements, but the Univer- sity, alumni, and other friends give funds from time to time. 67 % CuMxic uua- EDITOR Joe Cannon BUSINESS MANAGER ITenry Lanham ASSOCIATE EDITOR Mildred Cragon ART Ed Chandler CANNON grot it out ADVERTISEMENTS Henry Lanham Frank Akers Clare Isanhour Jay Hall SUBSCRIPTIONS Bob Bogpus Bob Thomas Ed Chandler Corky Dove Mildred Cragon Denney Wells Spencer I 68 LANHAM got It paid for 1 MARIE WILLOUGHBY President DON WEST Faculty Advisor ALAN DICKSON BOB MCMILLAN JERRY ELLIOTT WALTER ABELL WALTER SLACK EIIZABETH STEPHENS LEWIS FALIAW CAROLYN DICKSON FRANK AKERS FOLKLORE CLUB The Folklore Club fosters interest in folk sonprs and dances through frequent meetings, sponsors the barn dances. 69 LORDS AND LADIES OGLETHORPE 1 947 .. .Frances Striblinp Joe Brown 1948... BASKETBALL 1947-48 (Reprint below courtesy of the Stormy Petrel. It would be impossible to add anything to it. — Ed.) The Petrels played a thirty fraiiie schedule with two entries in local tounianieiits. Most of the games were played in a fast league and many games were played with the sick and crippled huddled disconsolately on the bench. Few road trips were made with a full team, many of them having • only one or no substitute for the first five. Yet the Petrels captured I ' l wins to 19 losses and ran up the score of 1,617 to opponent ' s 1,777. But only those who witnessed the games can appreciate the etfort put forth by the team, which on several occasions was required (for lack of substitutes) to play the full game without rest. Although some of the .scores .show that the Birds were out- played, they were always fighting and gave a good account of them- selves. The most outstanding showings of the Petrels quintet were those with ■Ft. Benning and the University of C!hattanooga. Both games were won in the home gym by a one point marg- in and both return games were lost by a slim margin. It would be hard to select any out- standing performers for the Petrels, except for high scoring honors. A. Z. Johnson led his team in this aspect with Jim Ilinson running a close sec- ond. Hinson, is the only Junior on the team. The other members of the team have two remaining years for the Black and Gold.
