COURT CHAMPHU Hail to the Championsl At the end of the 1955-56 campaign the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils stood alone on top of the Northern League. The pinnacle of the season was reached when the Blue and White decisively defeated Dean Academy of Couverneur with a score of 52-44 before one of the largest crowds that ever witnessed a basketball game in George Hall gym. After dropping the opener in Gouverneur. there were many who felt that the 1955-56 campaign would be a mediocre season. However, thirteen consecutive wins proved the Devils to be quite supreme. This string of thirteen victories equaled the record of two previous Harwood Champions since 1951. A trip to Malone brought the victory string to an end, but the following game at Couverneur found the Blue Devils firmly entrenching themselves in first place, which entitled them to the League Champion- ship. This win gave the Blue and White the Horace Lamberton Trophy for the third time since its estab- lishment in 1951. The next week at Appleton Arena the Blue Devils were defeated by a single point by Franklin Academy of Malone. This game. according to some Northern League experts. was one of the better basketball games of recent years. One of the biggest factors in such a successful sea- son was the wholehearted effort put forth from the coach to the last man on the bench. Though space allows us to mention only a few names. no one mem- ber of the team deserves more praise than the other. Such members as Gus Murray. Doug Reynolds. and Don Kelso were outstanding in the ability they dis- played in their set shots. rebounds and other plays. Les Porter and Dick Sears deserve praise for the expert way they handled the ball. The performances of Pearson. Ashley, Dodds. and Simpson when they were needed to do the duty of a faltering starter were of great value. Coach Elliott is due for the heartiest congratulations for producing and building up such a praiseworthy and well drilled club. To wind up the season. Sears. Murray. Porter, and Reynolds received the honor of being elected to the All-Northern Boll. So concludes the great basketball season for 1955-56 at Ogdensburg Free Academy! ront row Coach Elliott J Pear on D Kel o D Qear I.
