SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS-Seated Les Porter Pre ident Bob Brown Vice President Stand mg Sheila Felt Trea urer Melba Fanrbairn Secretary CLASS HIISTURY As Sophomores the 1956 class of seniors participated in the pep rally held before the Canton-Ogdensburg football game in 1954. In the parade the class won both prizes for the most participants in the parade and for the best float. ln their junior year, the class of 1956 sponsored the prom which was called Spectacle de la Merf, Through the efforts of the members of the class and under the chairmenship of Sid Greenblatt and Melba Fairbairn, the gym was transformed into a mystical scene of the sea. In December of 1955 the class of 1956 held the Snowflake Festival, one of the most successful Christmas balls ever put on at O.F.A. Chairman Bob Heintzelman and co-chairman Zola Vail directed the Seniors in creating an illusion of sparkling stars and glittering snowflakes in the gym. ln January this class bestowed honor upon O.F.A. by having one-third of its members on the honor roll. The class of 1956 will be given the opportunity to display its talents for the last time on Monday, June 25, at the Class Night. f ' 4' , 1, gf' Silk, 3.7, Lf' Q. at 1 JANE PHILLIPS ANN FRAZIER Valedzclorzan Salufqlgngn SCHULASTHQ HUNURS Jane Phllllps Ann Frazler Carolyn Morley Peter Wells ,loan Brlggs Sidney Greenblatt Melba Falrbalrn 'Vlartha Guerln Ellzabeth Dllllngham Judlth George Robert Broun Robert Slmpeon She1la Felt Robert Helntzelman Daud 'VIcDonald Dorothy O X611 Wllllam Nlereau Joanne Lakey 94 05 13 05 91 62 91 100 90 84 89 66 89 403 69 31 89 103 86 60 86 51 K6 40 86 42 35 41 85 42 :J 4 84 4 1 Joan McRoberts Zelpha Webb 'Vlarllyn Lalone Lawrence V LaFla1r Leland Smlth ,ludlth Raymond Joan Keyee Peggy ann Ollyer Kathleen Roach Llncoln A hley Donald Dodds Howard 'Vlyer Zola Vall Barbara Smlth Ann Bllllngs Raymond Llmoge 84 H 84 43 84 26 84 05 82 f64 82 84 82 21 02 15 81 56 11 4-o 61 31 81 12 60 66 60 42 60 lo 60 108 l its .Ll 1 l '1 K ' fffffffffff L ufffffffffdddl ff. . ooeo, ' ' ' I fl n,nn,nnnnn,,, mn- n,n..V N - ,. ..-,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, , , . 1 . Our ceiling made from Spanish moss, our revolving treasure chest, sea horses adorning the walls, sea shell-band stand, and our mer- maid watching over the Prom all composed the magi- cal evening. The crowning achievement though, was our unique sea monster throne which held the King and Queen, Peter Wells and Joan Briggs. Music was supplied by the Blackhawks. Linder the guidance of Miss Crane, Miss Noxon, and Mr. Wilson, our Junior Prom became an occasion long to be remembered bv all. SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL 9 as O I The theme for our annual Christmas dance was Snow- flake Festival. From our sparkling snowflake ceiling to the little gingerbread house, to the snowmen in the corner, and our archway of blue lights in the middle of the dance floor, the soft feathery feeling of sparkling snow- flakes was conveyed to all present. All this was possible through the assistance of our faculty advisors. Our Christmas King and Queen, Robert Brown and Judith George, reigned over the Snowflake Festival for the evening. Music was supplied by the Knights of Rhythm from Norwood. The memories of our Senior Prom will be cherished by all of us. MUST AL HTGHLT HTS The Ogdensburg Free Academy High School Chorus, Assembly singers, Alumni, and special groups joined together on December 18, 1955 in the annual Christmas Concert under the direction of Mrs. Gardner Robie with the assistance of the Misses Betty ,lean Ellis and Carolyn Hendee as accompanists. On April 12, 1956, the Spring Concert was presented. Two special groups, the members of the Sectionals and All-State Choir, also participated in Musical Festivals held in Potsdam and Albany respectively. During May another group chosen from the High School Chorus went to Potsdam to compete in a Musical Festival. When the final whistle blew, the home team had come through again racking up a score of 19-6. With two successful games under their belts, O.F.A. traveled to Tupper Lake. The first tally' was accounted for by Gray, O.F.A.,s defensive tackle, when he recov- ered a Tupper Lake fumble in the end zone. The extra point was unsuccessful. Finally in thc fourth quarter, Sears went around end for the second and final touchdown of the afternoon. making the score 12-0. Due to a muddy' field, and duck hunting condi- tions the Gouverneur Wildcats knocked the props from under the Blue Devils, snapping the O.F.A. vic- tory string with a 20-0 Northern League decision. This deadlocked 0.F.A. and Couverneur for second place in the lNorthern League untouched by the undefeated Red Raiders Bouncing back from their previous defeat the Blue Devils at Canton threw two completed aerlals and got another touchdown on a fifty three yard run by Pete Cole to roll up a 21 d victory Ogdensburg completely dommated the first half both offensively and d fenslxely uarterback Porter was the offensive star as he tossed to Ashley and Sears for two T D s Enjoying their four wins the Devlls led by Coach Powers motored to Potsdam where they faced an arduous struggle with the Sandstoners The first half was a see saw battle between two evenly matched teams ending scoreless With high hopes and a last minute pep talk Ogdensburg received Potsdam s kick in the end zone. Les Porter supported by a very ag- gressive line made a runback of 103 yards for an im- pressive first touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter Co-Captain Heintzelman intercepted a pass, setting the stage for 0.F.A.'s final touchdown. Sears slanted off tackle to make the score 12-0. The extra point was good. adding up the score to 13-0. In the last game of the Blue Devils' campaign they battled Nlassena in the so-called Ngame-of-the-year. Coach Cordie Powers' Devils were hailed by many' as the team to beat the Red Raiders. Due to a mental block and a halfback named Murphy, Massena came out on top 31-7 The new line coach, Lacey Jones, the able assistant of head coach Powers. performed a fine job with the boys up front. H I 55 COURT CHAMPHU Hail to the Championsl At the end of the 1955-56 campaign the Ogdensburg Free Academy Blue Devils stood alone on top of the Northern League. The pinnacle of the season was reached when the Blue and White decisively defeated Dean Academy of Couverneur with a score of 52-44 before one of the largest crowds that ever witnessed a basketball game in George Hall gym. After dropping the opener in Gouverneur. there were many who felt that the 1955-56 campaign would be a mediocre season. However, thirteen consecutive wins proved the Devils to be quite supreme. This string of thirteen victories equaled the record of two previous Harwood Champions since 1951. A trip to Malone brought the victory string to an end, but the following game at Couverneur found the Blue Devils firmly entrenching themselves in first place, which entitled them to the League Champion- ship. This win gave the Blue and White the Horace Lamberton Trophy for the third time since its estab- lishment in 1951. The next week at Appleton Arena the Blue Devils were defeated by a single point by Franklin Academy of Malone. This game. according to some Northern League experts. was one of the better basketball games of recent years. One of the biggest factors in such a successful sea- son was the wholehearted effort put forth from the coach to the last man on the bench. Though space allows us to mention only a few names. no one mem- ber of the team deserves more praise than the other. Such members as Gus Murray. Doug Reynolds. and Don Kelso were outstanding in the ability they dis- played in their set shots. rebounds and other plays. Les Porter and Dick Sears deserve praise for the expert way they handled the ball. The performances of Pearson. Ashley, Dodds. and Simpson when they were needed to do the duty of a faltering starter were of great value. Coach Elliott is due for the heartiest congratulations for producing and building up such a praiseworthy and well drilled club. To wind up the season. Sears. Murray. Porter, and Reynolds received the honor of being elected to the All-Northern Boll.
