The 1947 Maroon CLASS HISTORY On a hot and sunny day back in September of l943, a group of twenty individuals with that distinctive green freshman look entered the doors of Ogden Community High School. On this day they became known as the Class of 1947. When time for class elections came, they elected Bertie Mae Bradley, president: Glen Busboom, vice-president: Danny Freeman, secretary-treasurer: Betty Eyestone, reporter: and Miss Anita Belford as the class advisor. A great many of them joined the music department and participated in the musical hits of the year. Although the class was fairly large when it was assembled in school, it began to decline in members near the end of the first year. During that year Ruth Kitchen and Agnes Talbot transferred to other schools. Wilbur Sieberns and Clarence Frerichs left the class near the end of the year. In September of 1944, as sophomores, the class was re-assembled with six- teen members. By the end of the first semester, Charlene Denhart, Don Max- well, and Bob Saathoff had discontinued their studies at Ogden Community High School. This discontinuation reduced our number to thirteen, an un- lucky number. That year the advisor was Mr. McJilton. Class officers were elected with Betty Eyestone, president: Danny Freeman, vice-president: Bertie Bradley, secretary-treasurer: and Glen Busboom, reporter. Although thirteen is supposed to be an unlucky number, it did not prove to be unlucky for the Class of 1947. The beginning of their junior year found the class busily at work preparing for the Junior-Senior Banquet. Miss Carter was the class advisor for that year. Class officers were: Carl Carter, president: Danny Freeman, vice-president: Ber- tie Bradley, treasurer: Betty Eyestone, secretary: and Glen Busboom, reporter. They were kept very busy with the class play and also the Junior-Senior Ban- quet. They presented the comedy play, Everything Happens to Us, and took part in a very successful Christmas Operetta and County Music Festival. The Junior-Senior Banquet was a great success and they were proud of themselves. At last the year which the class had all waited for arrived. They were Dig- nilied Seniors. Mildred Putnam failed to return to her studies, leaving the class with a total of twelve. There were five girls and seven boys in the senior class. The senior play, Hillbilly Courtship, was presented and was very successful. Miss Nicoson was our advisor and Glen Busboom was elected president: Bertie Bradley, vice-president: Wilma Jacobs, secretary-treasurer: and Betty Eyestone, reporter. Various members of the class participated in Christmas operettas, dramatic events, band, chorus, and other extra-curricular activities. We are leaving Ogden Community High School to seek our place in the great wide world. As we leave this school we will take with us many fond memories of our school days. These thoughts will linger with us forever. 14 The 1947 Maroon The 1947 Maroon PROPHECY What will these Seniors of '47 do? That we will try to show to you, By the following ten and two rimes Here's what they'll be doing in fareaway times. Clarence directs us to board his newest plane. It's jet-propelled, we hear him loudly exclaim. Let's take a fast trip and see all our classmates: Find out their ambitions and their fates. First on our long list is Bertie Mae. Who's been married now many a day: She's just written the best-seller of the year. A book entitled Leroy Was Here. While flying over big White barns, We see that they're Glen's dairy farms: His youngster, Billy, is in the F. F. A. And is winning prizes every day. At Glen's dairy farm we'll see Carl Carter is extremely busy: A famous veterinarian he is now, Curing either horse or cow. Now to the University of Illinois, There we see Wilma, filled with joy. The Bureau of Home Economics she's head of. y She teaches good housekeeping with all sincerity. And on an experimental lot behind the university. John has just brought here for everyone to see A super farm aid that's quite a sensation: Plows. discs, harrows, and sows in one operation. And here in the middle of busy Green Street Our flatfoot Danny we suddenly meet: I'm still pounding my beat, we hear him say. Doing this same thing every day. In the West we view from quite a height, Herb's wheat farm and there we alight To see this great farm of the Middle West: As a farmer, we hear. Herb's one of the best. In Hollywood we meet Helen Hayn, And in her penthouse we will dine: People daily send her flowers, For she's a model for John Powers. Here also we see someone directing the band, Of the U. S. Air Forces, with a mighty hand. That someone is Rusty, with his grinning face: He takes the band through quite a pace. Now we will take another small hop, For the famous Stork Club is our next stop: We see our Betty, pounding the keys. Living a wonderful life of ease. As we stop for a few hours of rest, We find Dorothy Stein, here in the West: She's running her own little ofiice force. And is glad that she took that commerce course. In sports the boys were very active. Bob Sattler, Forrest Danner, and Don Jacobs were on the first team in basketball and Buddy Rogers was the manager. They have also been active in softball, track, clubs and musical activities. The girls, too. participated in music and other school activities. ln order to make money, the class sold magazines and had a play in Octo- ber, Ghostly Quarantine. As a whole the class was very active in sports, clubs and music organizations. Erwin Oster- bur made the first team in basketball and several others played on the second team. This was the second year for Jean Fry and June Bradley as cheerleaders. At Halloween, the class presented a radio program for their part and they gave Santas Arrival on Christmas Eve for the Christmas Party. FRESHMEN In the fall of '46, a group of twenty-one freshmen swarmed into the halls of Ogden High, bringing with them a lot of pep and energy. As most freshmen are, these greenies were quite backward until they learned their way around and got a better understanding of high school life. There were some who rep- resented the county grade schools, but most of them came from across the road. For a few weeks, the upperclassmen had difficulty in distinguishing one from the other, but after initiation, they were one of us and we became better ac- quainted. We soon found them no longer backward, but with plenty of vim, vigor, and vitality. Several of the freshmen played in the band and most of them belonged to the boys' and girls' choruses. All of the girls belonged to the F. H. A. and some of the boys belonged to the F. P. A. A few of the boys were active in sports and it is believed that they may be good athletes in a year or more. Some of them made the second team basketball squad this year and did very well. Sponsored by Miss Gioannini, the class elected ofiicers at the beginning of the year as follows: President ...,..,.,,.,...,,.. ,.... ,,,..... D i ck Yeats Vice-President .,... . ..,, . ..,..,. A. was organized last September at a meet- ing called by Mr. Bantz. The boys decided on several things to do during the year, The main event was the trip to Chicago to see the International Livestock Exposition. Several of the boys were very successful in the state judging contest at Uni- versity of Illinois. Glen Busboom, Robert Osterbur, and John Osterbur were on the dairy team which placed second. Elvin Osterbur, Walter Robbins, Don- ald Jacobs won the beef judging contest. placing first. Elvin Osterbur, Danny Freeman, David Plotner received third at the Springfield State Fair on beef judging. A project tour is being planned for the summer months: nearly all of the boys have their projects as means of raising money. The boys agreed to clear away the timber on the Plotner farm where the tornado struck. They also sold garden seeds and collected dues. Nearly all intend to show livestock at the F. F. A. fair. A Father-and-Son Banquet was held in the earlier part of the year, The F. F. A. has been very successful this year in enrollment and activities, but next year we hope that it will be better and more enjoyable to prospective members to encourage them to join. 22 The 1947 Maroon Future Homemakers of America The Future Homemakers have been very busy bees again this year. They have proven themselves good workers in earning money for various activities. At noon hour, the F. H. A. sold candy part of the year. They also cooked and served the F. F. A. Banquet, December 7. At the Hallowe'en Community Party the girls won first place in the stunt contest which was a style show. Part of this hard earned money will be spent for sending a delegate to F. H. A. Camp. Last year's delegate was Betty Eyestone, and Helen Bluhm was the alternate. As Betty could not attend, Helen was sent. Two new offices have been added to the club this year, that of parliamen- tarian and chapter mother. Mrs. Lawrence Harry was unanimously elected chapter mother. Mrs. Harry was hostess to a very nice F. H. A. Christmas party on December 19, 1946. This was the F. H. A.'s second year as Future Homemakers of America, formerly known as the Home Economics Club. Heretofore work in dramatics had been limited to the junior and senior plays: consequently the other classes had no opportunity to participate in work of this kind. Membership in A'The Maroon Curtain, as the club is known, is open to all students seriously interested in learning the principles of acting by participating in various types of dramatic work. Because the group was late in organizing, the members decided to limit their activities to three one-act plays this year. They hope to get into other phases of dramatic work next year. The three one-act plays chosen for presentation on April I8 were a comedy. Life o' the Party : a mystery, 'AThe Jeweled Hand : and a drama entitled Hurricane Hill. Most of the members of the club attended the matinee performance of Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra presented by the Illini Theater Guild at the University of Illinois on February 28. Since the club is a new organization. it is impossible to say how successful it will be. However, membership is voluntary and the quality of the work done should be high since only those genuinely interested participate, The officers elected were: President, Helen Bluhm: Vice-President, Jeannie Fry: Secretary-Treasurer, June Bradley: Reporter, Elvin Dean Mauk. 24. Girls' Chorus The Girls' Chorus, directed by Mrs. Christ and accompanied by Mary Lou Habben, consists of those girls who are interested in choral music. The chorus met every sixth period on Tuesday, except on Thursday at which time the Mixed Chorus met. At the junior play there were two special mixed chorus groups. They sang Some Sunday Morning. and i'For Me and My Gal. On March 28, the chorus also sang at the senior play. ' On December 18, the combined chorus gave a cantata, HA Surprise for Santa. The entire group sang six Christmas carols in the first act. The second act consisted of a piano solo by Mary Lou Habben, a soprano solo by Eilene Robbins, a. trumpet solo by Robert Meyer, a reading by Helen Bluhm, and several band numbers. On April 25, the chorus attended the annual music festival at the Cham- paign Junior High School, to which all musical organizations of the county were invited. During the day the groups practiced and in the evening they sang for the parents and friends. The Ciirls' Chorus sang When Soft Voices Die and Sapphic Ode. The 1947 Maroon 25 Boys' Chorus The Boys' Chorus. which is under the direction of Mrs. Christ, has been together as a group for the past three years. At present the Boys' Chorus con- sists of eighteen members. The boys also had a double quartet group Which wa: also directed by Mrs. Christ. This group included Carl Carter, Danny Freeman, Erwin Osterbur, David Plotner, Bob Meyer, Don Jacobs. Forrest Danner and Cilen Busboom. The chorus sang at the junior and senior plays. At the junior play they sang popular music which included 'Alf l Had My Way, For Me and My Gal, and Some Sunday Morning. Next came the Christmas Cantata on December l8 at which all the boys in special groups sang Christmas carols. The chorus attended the annual spring festival on April 25, at the Cham- paign Junior High School, to which all of the Champaign County school mu- sical organizations were invited. The groups practiced during that afternoon of the festival night and on that evening sang for their parents and the many friends. The 1947 Maroon 27 Maroon Mirror 'Staff At the beginning of the year. it was decided to have the entire school rep- resented on the staff of the school paper rather than just the juniors and seniors as previously done. A paper was passed among the students and those inter- ested in being on the staff signed their names. At the first meeting of the staff, the staff members were elected. The scene of the play was somewhere in the Ozarks Where Widow Peppin and deaf old Pappy Stilsby are carrying on a mountain feud. To make matters worse, Pappy's son, Luke, and Ma Peppin's daughter, Emmy, were deeply in love. In simpler words, the old folks were feudin', while the young folks were spooninf While all this went on the Triffet sisters came home and brought their manager, Sol Silverstein, with them, in the quest of more hillbilly talent for his radio station. Ma Peppin immediately jumped to the conclusion that Mr. Silverstein was the man sent out by the Matrimonial Bureau to become her husband. How Mr. Silverstein found his way out of this embarrassing situation and how the problems of the others were solved finally brought the comedy to a hilarious conclusion. This mystery-comedy. set in a spooky, old Southern mansion inherited by young William Harrison, abounded in mystery. superstition, and horror. There was, however. a dash of humor here and there to lighten the more gruesome aspects of the whole thing. There was an opportunity for a variety of charac- terizations including a withered, toothless, old housekeeper, a jittery young Negro, a dark and sinister Creole doctor, a poetic, educated tramp, all of whom were in distinct contrast to the straight characters. To add to the weirdness of it all, a thunderstorm broke loose in all its fury, the lights went off, a fiery cross appeared and white-clad ligures were seen to parade past the window. The play ended satisfactorily. however. with no great harm done to anyone. Cast of Characters William Harrison . .. . Donald Jacobs Mother Blake ...... ...... BASKETBALL The Bulldogs of Ogden High had an up and down season: at times the Bulldogs came out and flashed like the teams of old, but not as many times as they should. The Maroons were led by Captain Glen Busboom, Herbert Osterbur, and Forrest Danner, and under the able coaching of Mr. John Waldrip. The squad is made up of five seniors, three juniors, and two sophomores. The large number of underclassmen on the squad suggests a good outlook for the 1947-48 season. Members of the first ive and their positions are as follows: Erwin Osterbur, Robert Sattler, forwards: Herbert Osterbur, center: Glen Bus- boom and Forrest Danner, guards, with strong reserves, Dale Carter and Donald Jacobs. The Ogden squad upset St. Joseph, and played many better teams to a standstill. It seems that at almost every game. Ogden left their free throw eyes at home, and many games were lost just on that account. This coming year should be a good year for the Ogden Bulldogs: while losing only two off the first live, they will have retained all reserves and they are all improving fast. Let's come out and back the '47-'48 team of O. C. H. S. Let's go, Bulldogs! 34. The 1947 Maroon June Bradley, Bertie Bradley, Betty Eyestone, Jean Fry. CHEERLEADERS Basketball season rolled around this year and found several girls and one boy interested in cheerleading. One by one. they dropped out of the picture. Before election day, the candidates met in Mr. Hays' office and decided how many cheerleaders there should be and how they should try out. They agreed to have four leaders. The day of election found Betty Eyestone, Bertie Brad- ley, June Bradley, Jean Fry and Eilene Robbins still in the running. It was a close race with Betty, Bertie, June and Jean coming in lirst. The girls de- cided to all be responsible for both games, rather than have first and second team cheerleaders. The girls brought maroon material for their dresses, and with the help of Miss Carter, made them. It was plenty of work, but a lot of fun. The finished products Were princess-styled, wool dresses with full skirts and were trimmed in White. Although there were times when the morale of both the team and the cheer- ing section was low, it was the responsibility of these girls to bring it back to its normal level and they did their best. Repetition of the yells proved Golf Fightl Winf and i'Yea. team, we're for you! to be their favorites. The 1947 llflaroon D. There were six boys-Glen Busboom, Herbert Osterbur, Forrest Danner, Bob Sattler, Clarence Osterbur, and Dale Carter-who had previous experience on last year's team. At the end of the season these following boys had gotten a permanent position on the softball team: Clarence Osterbur, pitcher: Dale Carter, catcher: Herbert Osterbur, flrst base: Herbert Bluhm, second base: Erwin Osterbur, third base: Glen Busboom, shortstop: Bob Sattler, left Held: Forrest Danner, center Held: David Woods, right field. The team completed the season of nine games without mishap. Although they lost quite a few games, everybody gained a lot of experience. The team ended up with two wins and seven losses. This was the fourth year on the varsity for Herbert Osterbur and Glen Busboom and the third year for Clarence Osterbur, Danny Freeman and Elvin Osterbur, Best of luck to next year's team!
