THE GOLDEN STRIPE But on the following Friday evening a far different atmosphere was perceived: an air of restraint, quiet, awe inspiring, portending grave doings, for, as we soon discovered, two heinous crimes had been committed by three of our fellow Seaman zfc-C.B.M.-Cadet-Ensign-to-be-Classmates'' with the United States at that time being in a state of war. Une was proven guilty of the unbelievable crime of actually appropriating unlawfully a second helping of pie Chow he did it only the Good Lord knowsjg and was peremptorily sentenced by Lieutenant Sullivan, the digni- fied senior member, to a penalty, fiendish in the extreme, beyond even those imposed by the inquisitors of old, namely, to eat for two weeks at the Harvard Union. lfanlaefzc zmimis vzwleslibusi imc? - The second, involving the presence of a general courtmartial under Captain Dunn, which met, pondered, and exonerated two of our fellow-sufferers from the base .insinuation of having been in an inebriate condition resulting from a too spiritual strawberry festival. Of the last Friday we speak in awed whispers, for it was then that following our last little quiz, we issued like Dante of old and once more beheld the stars. . M. S. E. Ai AMN! w ir N 1- --'ia 'J 77

THE GOLDEN STRIPE Glnurtmartialz FOREWORD lf you should be out of luck enough to be named as recorder in a Navy courtmartial, what would you do ? This is the real reason Why two cadets obtained permission from Captain Hourigan, through Lieutenant Dane, to go ahead on arrangements. Mr. Dane was enthusiastic and tenderedany advice needed, also the services of a Stenog ClVIiss Ahernj. With the aid and guidance of Enfs Day of Regulationsl' and a third member, drafted for his manly beauty, the committee chose cases: a S.C.lVI. and a G.C.M., fitted facts to each case, made out necessary papers and served them, chose members of courts by selective draft and counsel for each side in the case. To each counsel was given a list of facts and permission carte lzlanrlw to coach and bring in witnesses for support of their case. The resulting evening's proceedings were beyond the farthest hopes of the committee in regard to wit and humor and yet did not depart too far from the seriousness of court proceedings as they really are.
