THE GOLDEN STRIPE ilirihag Nightn RIDAY AFTERNOON, November 8, as we sat either absorbing the mysteries of screw currents and ponder- ing over the natural cussedness of the wake current in its determined opposition to the sidewise pressure of the blades, or else sat peacefully slumbering on the back seats, we were aroused from our wrapt contemplation by the cry of Attentionl and the subsequent appearance of Mr. Dane, who startled us-yea, even shocked us-by his word that instead of being allowed the accustomed privilege of culling learning from our beloved text-books in the peaceful and tranquil air of lower Widener, awe were to attend a song service in the classic shades of Emerson. ' Seven o'clock found us so 'assembled with the omnipresent juniors in the background. Then, at a word from the Exec, the walls of that room, which hitherto had heard only the martial tread of instructors and the accompanying words of profound wisdom, echoed and shook when nearly three hundred and fifty embryo officers released a little of the accumulated pep storediup by virtue of our little matutinal exercise beneath the pleasant light of the moon. A most delightful evening followed, during which we sang all the popular songs under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while the original wit and humor of the well-known author and humorist, Mr. Whitney, went, at least part way, ttowlard filling the gap occasioned from being thus ruthlessly deprived of our usual hour and three quarters of delving into the mysteries of breech mechanism and cam shafts. The following ,Friday evening we marched to gobs' paradise, across the way, and there were regaled with the inspiring and elevating movies of Mutt and Jeff. The peaceful darkness during the performance afforded many a weary mortal opportunity for slumbering without fear of hearing McGinnis's clarion note or the scarcely less dreaded or less frequent words, Wake up that man in the fourth row I on the 22d once more we met in the homelike atmos- phere of Emerson, there for a period to sit astounded by the scintilating genius, Aristophanean wit, and Ciceronian eloquence as exhibited by our classmates, who proved competent in all roles from a country magistrate to a ballet dancer. 76i

THE GOLDEN STRIPE But on the following Friday evening a far different atmosphere was perceived: an air of restraint, quiet, awe inspiring, portending grave doings, for, as we soon discovered, two heinous crimes had been committed by three of our fellow Seaman zfc-C.B.M.-Cadet-Ensign-to-be-Classmates'' with the United States at that time being in a state of war. Une was proven guilty of the unbelievable crime of actually appropriating unlawfully a second helping of pie Chow he did it only the Good Lord knowsjg and was peremptorily sentenced by Lieutenant Sullivan, the digni- fied senior member, to a penalty, fiendish in the extreme, beyond even those imposed by the inquisitors of old, namely, to eat for two weeks at the Harvard Union. lfanlaefzc zmimis vzwleslibusi imc? - The second, involving the presence of a general courtmartial under Captain Dunn, which met, pondered, and exonerated two of our fellow-sufferers from the base .insinuation of having been in an inebriate condition resulting from a too spiritual strawberry festival. Of the last Friday we speak in awed whispers, for it was then that following our last little quiz, we issued like Dante of old and once more beheld the stars. . M. S. E.
