e THE GOLDEN STRIPE A I-Iiatnrg nf illnur illllnnthz NE could write a very short history of our class by saying that from August zo to December 5 many drills, for- mations, exams., and a little liberty were enjoyed by all. It seems best, however, to point out a few prominent events which marked or marred our course. l.et's start with the first day and end with the last. Remember the day we lined up and were sized off in prepara- tion for going through our four months in good standing? Wasii't it, to quote a well-known saying, a grand and glorious feelin'? ---until, while standing there they handed us all copies of General Orders No. 3, the Cadets' Bible? Didn't the joy of being inthe Cadet School vanish when you learned that it was possible to acquire from five to forty demerits for some odd four hundred crimes? Didnlt you at the end of the first day realize that the man who wrote How to live on twenty-four hours a day must have been a lodger? Ordnance But time passed quickly and it was not long before marks came out for results on exams. and likewise the usual questions as to What did you pull down in Regs ?'l or Why donlt you see --- as to why you received only 1.2 in pl, lt seemed best to find a way of reducing the morning casualty lists read at breakfast daily, and so the method Was found- Th21l1lCS, however. due to the four famous discipline officers, the twenty-five minute inspections by the boatswain twins were reduced to a minimum and demerits likewise. Those who were put on the Saturday and Sunday permanent detail will never agree that the discipline officers ever helped them out much, but l dare say there were many who did approve of them. 'l'hird month starts-two to go. So did influenza ann qua: hind the iron bars except for an occasional stroll -up to the Union for a bite of fresh fish? That was surely a time not l 'antine come into existencel Remember standing bc- soon to be forgotten. 63

THE GOLDEN STRIPE Fourth and last month came in with Whistles and bells, parades and midnight libertyl The Armistice Was signed and the War overl I don't mean to lecture, but that fourth month We ought to look hack at and remember above all other events. History within historyl In all seriousness I say that some day or once a year you will recall marching through Boston on Victory day. If that means nothing to us, then it will be diflicult for us ever to have anything to remember the School by. Soon exams. professional, written, oral, and physical were passed, and Friday, December 6 came. We finished our course! It would be foolish to try to describe our feelings on being able to check out once and not have Ensign -- say, Cadet X. Y., 6.30 QP.M. Sunday, or Is your cot made up ? Free once more. That's all! i B. W. M smmlqyo J 644
