The Word came and all of us were joyful over the anticipation of qualifying in order that vve might be of greater service to the Naval Forces. We started with keen interest, ambition, and couragel The routine at first was novel but soon the seriousness of what the results meant penetrated, and each of us, at all times, endeavored to show accuracy and precision which should be characteristic of American manhood and Whose convictions should be courageous enough to undertake, as Well succeed in, those enterprises that are necessary in order that the development of right and justice might prevail. VVe have now completed our course and stand prepared to undertake any duties that We arc summoned to fulfil. S. 15. W., jk. It seems best, however, to point out a few prominent events which marked or marred our course. l.et's start with the first day and end with the last. Remember the day we lined up and were sized off in prepara- tion for going through our four months in good standing? Wasii't it, to quote a well-known saying, a grand and glorious feelin'? ---until, while standing there they handed us all copies of General Orders No. 3, the Cadets' Bible? Didn't the joy of being inthe Cadet School vanish when you learned that it was possible to acquire from five to forty demerits for some odd four hundred crimes? Didnlt you at the end of the first day realize that the man who wrote How to live on twenty-four hours a day must have been a lodger? If that means nothing to us, then it will be diflicult for us ever to have anything to remember the School by. Csrscian Llmssn Wumj BOSTON, Nov. -, 1918.-One hundred eighty cadets of the graduating class of the Officer Material School at Har- vard stormed the portals of the Brook- line County Club today and assumed complete charge until :L large detail of l5oston's lfaircst were organized into an arresting party and came to the club is rescue. No casualties reported othei' than a few b1'oken hearts, and Bostou's Fair- est showed bravery andsplcndid training in calming the attack before much damage was done. Outside of IL few of the shiest, no diiiicnlty was encountered in making arrests, according' to statements of many of l+'airest.,' lt was :L tame crowd to what we ex- pected, declared one of the beauties, their own dumb way. According to many who witnessed the incident, the affair was exceedingly unique. The employees of the club saw the futility of offering resistance and gave the raidcrs access to all parts of the building. Came Out in Street Cars The cadets we1'e first seen when evac- uating' the street cars which brought them from Harvard Squareg and it so hap- pened that one of the caddies of the club was chasing a golf ball across the street when the ca1's came to a stop and began disembarking' their sea-going contents. What first attracted me, said the caddie, were the howls from the cars. They were singing 'Sweet Adeline,' and QI' thought they must a-been nutty sing- ing a sentimental song like that in the middle of the afte1'noon. il' raced back to the club to tell my boss. My boss told the steward, and the steward started put- ting the bottles away. lint there was no need of that because the gang was prohibition even though they were sing-- ing 'Sweet Adeline' in the middle of the day.?'. The raidc1's came marching route step and telegraphed their approach to the club house by their songs and noise so that the management of the club timed pretty well its mode of defence, accord- ing to a statement made by the club 's head porter. Aviator Distracts Attention As luck would have it we were aided in our defence by the descent of an aviator upon the golf links just as thc cadets reached the premises, said the porter. Upon seeing the air machine the boys raced to the scene of the land- ing, and we1'e diverted in their designs upon the club. The aviator's trouble was enough to dive1't anybody. He had made the trip from Minneola, Long Is- land, to visit his Boston sweetheart and had run out of gasoline at a height of six thousand feet. After placating the disappointed Mercury as best they could, and after curious examination of the machine the cadets kicked a football around to re- lieve their feelings, the porter asserted. Many who came rushing to the club house bescechcd the steward to depart from the Sahara-like attitude, but to no avail. The aviator, it is said, was tfhe only man who ac'com'plished the Moses feat. l oiled, the 1'lLltl01'S departed among the divans, and a few gamesters indulged in euchrc. Lieutenant Dane and the management decided to lnnnor the raiders until the arresting beauties ar1'ived, and it was decided that food would do the trick. Behavior Buffeted liargc quantities of soup were poured, and realizing that most of this nourish- ment was running to noise, it was de- cided that peas should be served. This was not satisfactory until mashed po- tatoes caine in accompaniment, as some of the c1'uder pirates began playing ping-pong in their efforts to balance the 'lfrench molecules on their knives. That the buffet was popular was evi- denced by repeated calls for seconds Ice cream was the food causing most disseusion. Many of the meek lost out entirely. According to authentic witness- es, Cadets Quint, Bernstein, Yesncr, Freedinan. Ring, Charak, Talamo and Nigh lost out on thirds. Sailor Orchestra Aids Just as the party threatened to play Drop the lIandkerchief, the music 66 started. 'Realizing the soothing effect of Spring Song strains upon un- settled minds not a fiddle remained nn- tuned in the hands of the skilful Jackics to aid the Ill!l.lIi1g'0lllC'lli1. The orchestra was specially imported from Common- wealth Picr, and it was a decided factor in bringing about thc ends sought by the powers in command. Rustling Silks Heard Sweet sounds f1'on1 the alcoves were presently hcard, and sweet girlish voices joined the music of rustling silks. The pirates were abashcd and fell willing captives to the whims of the party who had come to save the day. Only a few of the shiest remained as an awe-inspired audience when the strains of There Are Smiles were rendered by the musical gains, Attention l ' Suddenly Attcntionl was heard sounded. on the bngle. Every dancer stood riveted in his tracks, while Admiral Spencer S. Wood and his party joined the festivities. il'll'0lll then on nothing was heard but music and flattering praises. The beauties were supervised by sweet matrons, and the cadets did not care nor have a chance to bolt. The raidc1's caused nary a ripple of disorder and many lost their hearts before the last number was given. Fifteen, it is re- ported, will not fully recover. Engage- ments are rife and complete subjugation of the wilful raidcrs accomplished.. The patronesses and girls were beautifully gowncdj Words, in fact, are not avail- able to picture the costumes of thc occa- sion. lt did occur to a few of the think- ers to compliment thc patronesses with flowers. RAllVISliY, Tough Eddie, as the boys call him, is a sailorman of the old'school, and withal an instructor whose thoroughness and keenness commands the respect and attention of every one of his listeners. His five, years, experience on every kind of a ship before his entrance in the Naval Academy at Annapolis gave him the foundation for that wide acquaintance with Naval affairs which he now possesses. Indeed, even at the age which found him entering Annapolis, he was a qualihed second mate and held an unlimited license for that berth. At the Academy he stood very high in his work, being Company Commander, and still he found time to play quarter on the regular Navy gridiron eleven for two years. His career in the Navy was suddenly terminated shortly after his graduation in IQI3 by an injury to his h-earing resulting from the concussion of the big guns on board ship. Having received a medical discharge, Mr. 'Ramsey took up his work in Patterson, New Jersey. His plant, which up to the war had pro- duced the very intricate silk machines extensively used in that city, immediately upon the entrance of America into the war devoted its whole resource to Government work. During the years near New York Mr. Ramsey also won the degree of Bachelor of Science at Brooklyn Polytechnic. ' p Upon the entrance of the United States into the war Mr. Ramsey joined up too, and put in for overseas duty at once. He was given the rank of Lieutenant in the Naval Militia Class 2. The Officer Material School first met him in Octo- ber, 1917, when the School consisted of a class of some forty Cadets and when the ship was located, not in Harvard, but in Technology. He has been with us since and, believe us, He knows the stuff. - a 70 THE GOLDEN STRIPE s MOVIE 05' CQOXQ1' EVN, OLY1 Ordnance Exavvx lf ' XCQ , '! CAMP JACKSON, - COLUMBIA, S. C. 1 DEAR TED: Well, I'm in the Ensign School, which isuollicially known as the Oflicer Material School. Being in the F.A., I suppose you're acquainted with the guy who blows a tune called reveille every morning just at the time when everybody is playing the great little game of shut-eye. Said tune Hoatsout on the atmosphere here at 5.45 A.M. We cuss, but we fall in at 6.00 with the usual muster. Then its Right by squads! Double timell' lVIarch! and here We go around the famous Harvard Yard, paying no attention to the urgent pleas of the B.W.C. to Keep step V' or the C.C. to Dress up those squads! Past the halls where Emerson and Lowell slept until 9.00 A.M. and became famous, We go at 6.00 A.lVl. and obscurity staring us in the face. The war certainly has changed things. Emerson wouldn't have a chance in 1918. ' ' 1 After the run the companies are deployed for calisthenics. l use the sword only on paper. The proper denomi- nation is monkey drill. But a respectable monkey would blush for shame to see our crew plucking grapes out of the air like a Grecian goddess to the tune of sixteen counts. Everything is sixteen counts, whether you're plucking the grapes from the non-resistant ether or taking a deep breath. Imagine taking a deep breath in sixteen counts. Would Emerson? Would Lowell? There's a fellow named Sam Winslow who is always the chief monkey at the zoo exercises. He counts beautifully and measures a perfect thirty-six. He's trained this bunch down until they all look like wood nymphs. After seeing this crew perform, Ted, you wouldn't go around the corner to see the twelve apostles do a buck and wing. Somehow it gets over. lt could be worse. What if you were a worm and had to live in a wild crabapple? Why, I know one fellow who married to beat the draft, but, inside a month he had enlisted in the submarines. After retreat we always have two stampedes: the Waldorf, for a cup of Java, or the washroom for a shave. So far, only two men have been seriously injured. Not me, so I'm waiting for your letter. ' Seven o'clock found us so 'assembled with the omnipresent juniors in the background. Then, at a word from the Exec, the walls of that room, which hitherto had heard only the martial tread of instructors and the accompanying words of profound wisdom, echoed and shook when nearly three hundred and fifty embryo officers released a little of the accumulated pep storediup by virtue of our little matutinal exercise beneath the pleasant light of the moon. A most delightful evening followed, during which we sang all the popular songs under the guidance of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while the original wit and humor of the well-known author and humorist, Mr. Whitney, went, at least part way, ttowlard filling the gap occasioned from being thus ruthlessly deprived of our usual hour and three quarters of delving into the mysteries of breech mechanism and cam shafts. The following ,Friday evening we marched to gobs' paradise, across the way, and there were regaled with the inspiring and elevating movies of Mutt and Jeff. The peaceful darkness during the performance afforded many a weary mortal opportunity for slumbering without fear of hearing McGinnis's clarion note or the scarcely less dreaded or less frequent words, Wake up that man in the fourth row I on the 22d once more we met in the homelike atmos- phere of Emerson, there for a period to sit astounded by the scintilating genius, Aristophanean wit, and Ciceronian eloquence as exhibited by our classmates, who proved competent in all roles from a country magistrate to a ballet dancer. 76i THE GOLDEN STRIPE But on the following Friday evening a far different atmosphere was perceived: an air of restraint, quiet, awe inspiring, portending grave doings, for, as we soon discovered, two heinous crimes had been committed by three of our fellow Seaman zfc-C.B.M.-Cadet-Ensign-to-be-Classmates'' with the United States at that time being in a state of war. Une was proven guilty of the unbelievable crime of actually appropriating unlawfully a second helping of pie Chow he did it only the Good Lord knowsjg and was peremptorily sentenced by Lieutenant Sullivan, the digni- fied senior member, to a penalty, fiendish in the extreme, beyond even those imposed by the inquisitors of old, namely, to eat for two weeks at the Harvard Union. lfanlaefzc zmimis vzwleslibusi imc? - The second, involving the presence of a general courtmartial under Captain Dunn, which met, pondered, and exonerated two of our fellow-sufferers from the base .insinuation of having been in an inebriate condition resulting from a too spiritual strawberry festival. Of the last Friday we speak in awed whispers, for it was then that following our last little quiz, we issued like Dante of old and once more beheld the stars. . M. S. E. W., JR THE GOLDEN STRIPE Glnurtmartialz FOREWORD lf you should be out of luck enough to be named as recorder in a Navy courtmartial, what would you do ? This is the real reason Why two cadets obtained permission from Captain Hourigan, through Lieutenant Dane, to go ahead on arrangements. Mr. Dane was enthusiastic and tenderedany advice needed, also the services of a Stenog ClVIiss Ahernj. With the aid and guidance of Enfs Day of Regulationsl' and a third member, drafted for his manly beauty, the committee chose cases: a S.C.lVI. and a G.C.M., fitted facts to each case, made out necessary papers and served them, chose members of courts by selective draft and counsel for each side in the case. To each counsel was given a list of facts and permission carte lzlanrlw to coach and bring in witnesses for support of their case. The resulting evening's proceedings were beyond the farthest hopes of the committee in regard to wit and humor and yet did not depart too far from the seriousness of court proceedings as they really are. The man sitting next to the accused lost his ration and two empty pie plates were found piled in front of the accused. The accused was heard to remark, That was damn fine pie. - It is known that the accused sent his trousers to the ship's tailor that night to remove pie stains from the I'CZ1l'. It is known further that the accused never ate pie on any other occasion, but the sick hay records show that he reported next morning suffer-ing from indigestion and colic, and told the hospital apprentice that pie never agreed with him, and was treated with the proper mixture for the relief thereof. .
