INTRAMURALS Another successful year in the Oelwein High School boys' basketball intramural program was completed under the direction of Clair Kraft. Four teams competed in the intramural league. Games were played at six o'clock on nights when the court was free. This gave boys not out for winter sports a chance to compete in an active sport. The teams were composed of from five to seven players. Each team played the other twice during the entirety of the season. This year a trophy was presented to the Kirkpatrick-Hall team which ended up on top of the league with a 5-1 record. The trophy was homemade relic, fashioned by Mr. Kraft. Tied for second place were the teams of Scholz-Jarchow and Steele-Pritchard, each finishing with 3-3 marks. With these three teams copping the first three positions, it left Shaw-Kutschat dwelling in the cellar with 1-5 record. Leading scorer of the year was Merle Walters, who collected 63 points in six games for an average of 10.5 points per game. Finishing close behind in the scoring race were Fred Steele and Ken Frisch, each collecting 58 points. Tony Thiele placed fourth with 48 points and Bill Scholz fifth, with 40 points. After completion of league games, an all star team was picked, which opposed a team composed of faculty members in an O' Club benefit. The contest billed as The Game of the Year , proved to be just that as both teams provided spectators with thrills and laughs never before seen on a basketball court. Mr. Kraft, who sponsored and refereed all games, should be given a lot of commendation for his interest in the intramural program.
