They finished in sixth place in Northeast Iowa Conference play with two victories and five defeats. The two victories were registcred against Cresco, 13-0, and Cedar Falls, 31-12. Head coach Chuck Joss, assisted by Cy Bellock and Jim Nelson. in his first season in Oelwein, ran his offense considerably from the T formation, mixing in some single wing plays. The team opened the season against a strong Marion squad. The locals wilted under the continuous attacks by the fast backs and heavv line of the opposition. Final score was Marion 32, Oelwein 13. The local eleven defeated Cresco 13-0 in their first offense bat- tle. Outstanding run of the game was a 65 yard jaunt by Leo Spider Jorgensen. The Husky line of Nat Bly, Sam Greco, Les Ohl, Dick Droste, Dean Iverson, Bill Mack and Rex Dudley was at its best in holding Cresco scoreless. Following the game were two losses on the road that gave Oelwein followers little to cheer about. After being beaten by Charles City 57-26, the locals were shut out 19-0 by Grin- nell. The high point of the season was against Cedar Falls when the O'Husks unleashed a tremendous second half drive to win 31-12 be- fore a large crowd of Homecoming fans. After scoring on the fourth from scrimmage, the Huskies found themselves behind 12-7. In the second half they probably played the best ball all season and scored four touchdovnms to the losers none. This game was a fine finish for 1951 Homecoming festivities. After this victory, the team lost four straight victories in a row to New Hampton, Decorah, Osage and Waverly by top heavy scores. 24 Scpt. Sept. Sept. Oct. Oct. Oct. Oct. Nov. Nov. Sea,son's Record The Freshman-Sophmore team ended its sea son with a 7 win 1 loss record. The lone defeat was at the hands of Cedar Falls 20-7. In the first game of the season Ken Smith galloped 30 yards in the fourth quarter to give the Pups a 7-0 victory over Charles City. In their second game the Pups took a 20-0 contest from Waverly. Tallies were scored on a 20 yard run by Ken Smith, a pass from Ken Smith to Roger Smith, and a quarterback sneak by Ken Sahs. Cedar Falls downed the Pups in their fourth contest 20-7. In a complete reversal of their true form the Pups were never able to get rolling in the game. The Pups literally slaughtered Independence in their fifth encounter as they rolled to 47-0 win. Ken Smith led the scoring with 3 TD sg Al Baker had 2g and Leo Campbell and Gene Kemmerer went over for one each. The Pups line was out- standing in this game. avr-J 'rvw L4 HSHLT 1:9 J' O c 6 F-I Review of Season The Huskies opened the season with a 17-16 win over Waverly in their quarter ol' thc North East Iowa Conference Jamboree at Decorah, Franklin High of Cedar Rapids beat the Huskies in the first regular game 54-39. After this the Oclweinite's victories and losses came in streaks during the following two months of the season. A four game winning streak was followed by four straight losses and five consecutive wins. Nashua was the first victim of the Husky attack in a 49-36 uprising, Jerry 'Tadpole Platt. who had just recently returned from Iowa City, paced the team with 14 points. First conference foe of the Huskies, New Hampton, was turned back 44-41. Osage was trounced 52-30. Independence was nosed out in the last fcw minutes 56-52. The losing streak was particularly disheartening to fans and the team be- cause all four games were lost by a combined total of only 14 points. Each of the games was against formidable foes and the outcome of the game was not definite until the gun had gone off. Scores were Cedar Falls 58-55, Charles City 47-42, East Waterloo 48-46, and Waverly 51-47. In the annual alumni scrimmage, a team of recent grads defeated the varsity 50-43. Vastly improved since the season's start, Husky bask-etballers launched 1952 in a glorious way by beating five conference teams in a row. Decorah, Cresco, Cedar Falls, Charles City, and New Hampton-in that order-suc- cumbed to the O-elwein attack. The local outfit won three of the remaining five games from Osage, Independence, and Cresco, and lost two on foreign courts to Waverly. A scrappy Maynard quintet went down in defeat, 50-35, in the first round of the sectional tournaments at Fayette. Tough Sumner went down before the Husky attack 62-49. This contest sent the Huskies into district tournaments at Waverly against the host team. Review of Season Finishing the season with an overall record of fourteen victories and five defeats, the freshman-sophomore basketball team had one of the best records in recent years. Coached by Chuck Joss, the traveling squad consisted entirely of soph- mores. The first team, during the first half of the season, included Enoch Fratzke, Allan Baker, Leo Campbell, Jim Lilly, Ken Sahs, Glenn Borland, with John Channer and Jack Trager as top substitutes. Loss of personnel due to one cause or another, resulted in a poorer showing toward the end of the season. The sophs won ten of their first eleven games, losing only to East Waterloo. They lost four of their last eight games. The squad showed its possibility to work into a high-scoring organization. The chances are good that the Husky varsity, during the next two years, will be a top-rate ball club. 28 Season's Record Opponents Franklin Nashua New Hampton Independence Charles City Osage Cedar Falls East Waterloo Waverly Decorah Cresco Cedar Falls Charles City New Hampton Waverly Osage Decorah Independence Cresco Oelwein 28 56 50 30 58 51 47 32 56 42 51 39 44 37 3 1 26 45 47 52 Junior High Basketball Squad in ROW ONE: Bill O'Hara, Ted Proctor, Kavin Ramsey, Ronnie Goodell, Bill Doty, John Youngblut: Rv0W TWO: Eldon Schlumbohm, Bill Scholz, Freddie Steele, Richard Reisner, Stanley Kirchhoff, Larry Jarchow: ROW THREE: Mr. Dough- ty, Dick Vargason, Tom Snyder, Edsel Lenius, Gary Annis, Dennis Binning, Cletus Schneider, Robert Shaw, Walt- er Windt, Bill Wilkie, Jack Levin, Coach Jim Nelson.
