AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A MGUQF A ISIIIIAN 16 HF flrstth1ngI remember I was stlll with mv brothers and slsters ln a co7y nest made by mv parents IH an old shoe A oon as we were large enough to run about ln our house our parents warned us not to leave our home because there was great danger ln the outslde world They called me Nllschlef and thls name sulted me very well for I was always gettmg mto trouble One day when Father and Mother were away from home I coaxed my brother Jlm to go wlth me IU order that we mlght see what thlngs outside looked l1ke We went through '1 dark basement and up a fllght of stairs We peeped under a door and what should we see but a cat peacefully sleepxng ln an old mald s lap? We waltedasnort tlme and she went mto another room Tnen We thlnklng the cat had left wlth her crawled under the door and proceeded to look for somethnng to eat ln the wood box I found a were not the only occupants of the box That verv same cat that we had seen a few mlnutes before was also looklng for somethlng to eat I 1n my hurrv to escape falled to Warn my brother of h1s approachlng danger The cat lettlng me escape selfed mv brother As I turned and looked back I saw my brother s tall stlckxng out of the cats mouth Then I was convinced that the old savlng was true tuat a cat always saves the tall of 1 mouse or rat tall the last for a toothplck I badly frlghtened ran to our home and told my parents about my brother s sad accldent not tellmg them how ever that I was the cause of all the trouble Thev were grleved greatly by the sudden death of my brother and agaln warned us not to leave the house But very soon I forgot about the hrst accldent and took my other brothers and slsters away from home untll one by one they were elther kllled bv the old mald s cat OI caught IU traps Once I barely estapel death I was caught ln a trap by my tall and lt was partlv cut oil' My parents blamed me for all the calamltles whlch had befallen our famlly Feeling gullty I declded to leave home I traveled through the country for several vears I dld mv traveling at nlght and slept ln the davtlme One mornlng I came to a schoolhouse and went ln to see what I could find School had not begun yet so I cllmbed 1nto the teacher s desk md w as eatlng, on an apple when the teacher came mto the house To my dlsm ly she came right up to her desk and opened It deem me she screamed and 1umped upon '1 chalr I felt sorrv for the poor llttle cleature and Jumped from her desk and mn out of the door I again started for my unknown destlnatlon One day I came to '1 xery large barn and declded to make thls my home for '1 while I went mto the barn 'md found a regular commumty of mv race establlshed ln 'ICOFIICYIIH Itook my lodglng xxxth them for awhnle untll I could hnd omt work to do No long, after mv 1 rrlval here I mtt a xtxy sweet lxttle Curl n :med lmx bhe and l became very fond ol each other Then we became fngaged and were marrled Now I l1ve 1n a modern house 1n Odessa Mlssourl l L J If 1,111 W.l ' il ' , ' .A t . . .
