HISTORY OF THE TEAM HE boys basket ball team has afforded much pleasure ln hugh school for many years but the glrls team smce lts orgamzatlon last year has afforded stlll greater amusement In the fall of 1913 the Sophomore glrls wlth the ald of Mlss Turner and NIISS Rose Staley organlzed a team We were very successful wlnmng the ma3or1ty of the games we played and declded to contmue playlng thls year About the mlddle of September thus year a meeting of the gurls basket ball squad was called and the followmg oflicers were chosen Florence Wakeman Captam Joanna Whltsltt Busmess Manager Velma Wlllcoxon Secretary and Ireasurer and MISS lurner Loach On October 15 we began our practlce and by October 29 our first team was chosen as follows Ioanna Whxtsltt and Mildred Osborne forwards Lena Belle Krohm and Imogene Sherman guards Velma Wlllcoxon runnmg center Florence Wakeman yumplng center Estelle Howe Frankle Downs and Irene Sherman bUbStltUt9S A TRIP TO LIBFRTY I ebruary 5 1915 we left Odessa at 4 17 for Llberty Mo and arrlved ln Kansas Cnty about 6 o clock We were too late to catch the Interurban so we declded to take the Burlington Mlss lurner telegraphed to her friends of our comlng and ln the xcltement left her muff at the telegraph office The Red Caps attractlng the at sentmn of some of our frxrls made us almost mxss our tam On the way while were revlewmg our experlences Vhss Turner dlscover ed the loss of her muff We arrlved at Liberty safe but very very hungry We were met by a couple of Odessa boys who were at tendlng Wrlllam Jewell College and some Llberty friends They escorted us to the high school buxldmg We then had only a few mlnutes to prepare for the game The whlstle soon called the players to their places Falthful Dutch was rlght there to play her part Frank played exceedingly well M11 sure dld throw the free goals whlle lkey put ln the flelders Everyone cheered the running center and on account of her smallness called hel' Tom Thumb F E W was there to play her best We won the game by one polnt After many cheers and yells we went to Arnold s Cafe for llght refreshments and then later went to the varlous homes of the Llberty players who entertamed us royally Bs 7 30 a m we were all at the statlon ready to start home We took the Interurban and made good tlme so that we had about an hour to spend ln Kansas Clty We took aJ1tney for Union Statlon and on our way we recognlzed that the chauieur fa colored manl was from Odessa On our arrxval there Mlss Turner went ln search of her lost mlff which she found at th Lost Article de pal tmem Some of the gurls remamed ln lxansas Clty Saturday whlle the rest came home to announce the vlctory , . .
