HISTORY OF THE SOPHOMORE CLASS FRANFESELIIUTT 17 On the mornmg of September 12 1913 thlrty three eager Fresh men assembled at the schoolhouse door to take a Journey lnto the land of culture and learmng We finally mustered up our courage to enter no doubt looklng very green and scared We were Joy fullv recexved by the Sophomores who wlth thexr paddles pro ceeded to lnltnate us Into the circle of thelr acqualntances They soon mvlted us lnto thelr social clrcle by a party gxven un the school bulldlng We accepted thenr IDVIIHIIIOD wlth much gratitude and great expectatlons But we were not long to enjoy thelr hospltallty for the Junlors and Semors hearmg of the good order to have a hand ln the entertaxnment and a tooth In the eats Although we had to leave about half past mne the party was by no means a failure and we went away thanklng the Sophomores for a very pleasant tlme and the Junlors for the excntement After many taunts and hardshlps we fimshed our first year wlth great honors The followmg year puttmg aslde the mme of Freshmen we took the more dlgnlfied one of Sophomores and welcomed the new Freshmen as Joyfully as we had been recelved the prevxous year We entered mto the usual color fights wlth the prop r class spxrlt and consequently the old gold and whlte was often seen fluttermg In many conspicuous places I The first entertalnment of the year was a party nn the form of atrack meet given by the Sophomores ln honor of the Jumors The varlous schools and umversntles Harvard Yale Odessa Missouri University and Kansas Unlverslty sent representatlves to contest for the prlzes MISSOUTI Umverslty succeeded ID carry Ing off the honors We m turn were royally entertained by the Juniors at a carmval Each dressed as a child and took a toy There were dolls horns rattles popguns and vshlstles Oh' the racket they made' For a few cents you could see Bluebeard s WIVES hung up by thelr halr who really made you wlsh you hadn t seen them the Wlld Man from Borneo the Kom1calKuss the Snake Charmer the Fat Man and the Sllm Woman The Plcture Show was the lmportant feature of the evemng wlth Jay Toblas and Mlss Frank Thls was followed by a Band Concert the Leader of the Band was .Iarrott Surber the wonderful performer on the tm horn fo tempt our appetites and I don t thlnk they needed much tempt mg our hostesses had provlded lce cream cones pop corn balls punk lemonade and stlck candy In short everythlng that would please a chxld was there Thls was voted the best party we have ever had We Sophomores have had many pleasant tlmes together but the one that stands out most promment perhaps because the most recent IS a flower huntC'?J on Creasey s Hlll Thursday Aprll 15 The boys wore overalls and straw hats and the gurls sun bonnets and aprons We took our suppers and all the faculty and started for the hlll about fouro clock The chmax of the evemng was reached when the faculty slld down the hay stack Every rose has 1tS thorns so amld all our pleasures we have studled hard and trled to keep up the record ofour class We hope to be the brlghtest class that wlll ever leave the O H S Y 1 L 4 Q 'ns 1 I - .
