The Broncs surprised not only the sport writers of Texas by winning 7 games, but also the fans of Odessa by tying the heralded Eagles of Abilene for the district championship. How did the Broncs do it? They did it without any sensational stars. They did it with team play, team spirit, and the typical Broncho hustle. Here is a brief history of the games the Broncs won and lost this year. With a new coach. Lacy Turner, who took over the head coaching job only two weeks before the 1959 season started, the Bronchos first journeyed to Amarillo to test their forces. After a 16 to 7 defeat, the Red Hosses returned home to try to regroup their team and promote the team play and spirit that they did not have in their first outing. The next week Odessa played the highly regarded Westerners of Tom S. Lubbock. In the early season polls, they were ranked to win their district and were ranked 10th before Odessa played them. Odessa then ruined their season opener by defeating them by a 26 to 6 count. The team play and team spirit that the Bronchos lacked in their loss to Amarillo were here to stay. •After their defeat of Lubbock, the Bronchos were still ranked as underdogs as they were to host the 6th ranked club in Texas—Port Arthur. After the smoke of the final gun had cleared, the scoreboard read Odessa 7 and Port Arthur 6. This was more than a victory, for it marked the second time in 14 years that Odessa has managed to defeat Port Arthur. The entire defensive team were the stars of the game, for they not only stopped the powerful Yellow jacket offense, but they also made a goal line stand at their 2-foot line. After their outstanding showing against Port Arthur, the Odessa Bronchos went to El Paso to play E! Paso Austin. When the game ended. Odessa was again on top by a 34 to 14 margin. Odessa, who had not shown much of a passing attack in their first 3 outings, rode the air lanes for the victory. After an open week, the Bronchos went to Wichita Falls to play the number one 4A team in Texas. After the Bronchos were beaten 27 to 0, they could fully understand why the Coyotes were ranked as the number one team in Texas. Although the score was one sided, the Broncs never gave up against the Coyotes. With a glittering 3 and 2 record, the Bronchos returned home to meet the Bobcats of San Angelo. After the defensive team stopped first period drive inside their 7 yard line, the Bronchos rode the strength of fourth period touchdown for a 7 to 0 victory. The next week, with the papers picking them ripe for an upset, the Bronchos showed the Big Spring Steers that they were too good for them by beating them 3-1 to 0. Odessa was in good form in pointing to their next week clash with Abilene. On the eve of November 6. the Odessa Bronchos played the Abilene Eagles for what seemed to be the district championship. After a scoreless first half. Abilene shoved over a third period touchdown to defeat the Red Hosses 7 to 0. Abilene after the game said that we had the best team that they had faced this year. On the night of the thirteenth of November, the Broncs, in the midst of cold weather and sleeting ice, showed their cross-town rivals who had the better team of the city. The Bronchos defeated the Permian High Panthers 14 to 0. The game was a surprisingly clean game, considering the rivalry that had built up in less than five months. With a chance for the district title after San Angelo had defeated Abilene. Odessa went to Midland and spoiled Midland's homecoming by defeating the Bulldogs 32 to 0. After being completely outplayed in the first half, the Broncs came out the second half and scored 32 points to send the Bulldogs dow n to defeat. Odessa’s record was 7 wins and 3 losses for the season, with their loss being to Wichita—runner-up in the state in 4A. Amarillo—who lost to Wichita Falls in their regional game, and to Abilene— who lost to Wichita Falls in the quarter-finals. Odessa posted a win over Port Arthur, who lost to Corpus Christ! Ray in the semi-finals of Class 4A. Win. Lose, or Draw. Odessa Loves Their Bronchos! 185 Although being small in number, the Odessa “B” Team showed the spirit, hustle, and competitiveness that is shown by any boy who proudly wears a Broncho uniform throughout all of their games. Distribution is a necessary part of our economy, for goods have no value until they reach the consumer. Training people who will transfer the goods from the factory to the consumer is the objective of distributive education. The 1950 census reported that over 35 per cent of all wage earners in Texas were employed in the field of distribution. Training is made possible by cooperation between the school and local business establishments. Students acquire training experiences in a distributive occupation by working each afternoon. Each morning the student attends regular classes plus a period in the Distributive Education classroom, where he receives both group and individual instruction in some of the many phases of business education. This year, thirty-five hoys and girls have been provided with a well-rounded program with the cooperation of twenty-eight Odessa business establishments. This number includes nineteen boys, sixteen girls; seven senior boys, eleven junior boys, six senior girls, and ten junior girls. 256 10 SMOKING I WAVING FLOOR OHS Homecoming queens, present and past V Just one ex up there?
