Mexico, land of color and gaiety, and tomb of an ancient and mysterious past, inspires the theme for the 1958 CORRAL, but we have gone back into time, past the age of the Mexican republic, past the era of the Spanish conquistadores, and into the period dominated by the original inhabitants of Mexico—the Aztecs. The land of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, boasted a culture far advanced to any in the western hemisphere at that time. Though many of the religious rites were pagan and barbaric, and the social, economic, and political life was in the infancy of development, the growth of a characteristic art was prominent. Throughout the 1958 CORRAL we have used this type of design to commemorate the ancient civilization and its culture. We hope you enjoy Aztecia. In accordance with the student council amendment, elections for the officers of the coming year were held in the spring. A flurry of activity produced hundreds of gay, informative posters and quite a bit of politickin' as the candidates quickly renewed old friendships and buttered-up their present ones. As the O. H. S. student walked down the halls, he was confronted by a maze of bright colors which announced the exceptional qualities of a particular candidate and solicited every available vote in the forthcoming elections. JUDY BETHEL, our iecrefary At last the day of the election assembly arrived and both students and candidates eagerly awaited the moment when the office seekers would muster their courage and parade forth to deliver their speeches. A variety of entertaining skits was presented, and each influenced the students as to how they would cast their votes. After all was said and done, elections were held and Ralph Posey and Judy Bethel were chosen new President and Secretary of the Student Council. The A Cappella Choir is the star in the crown of the choral department, proving itself, time and again, an outstanding vocal group. The men in their tailored tuxedos and the women in their black formals form a picture of dignity matched by few choirs. The music produced by this choir is equally superb in quality. For the past six years A Cappella has won Sweep-stakes in contest competition. It has been chosen to sing for select organizations from time to time, has performed in many school assemblies, and has spread its fame far beyond the borders of Texas. The hard-working director, Maurice Alfred, has molded the A Cappella Choir, through expert musician-ship and ability, into an organization of which C.H.S. may be proud. 266 SOPRANO ALTO Brenda Abbott Leah Akins Nancy Berry Lenora Baker Suzanne Boyd Ann Burch Pat Clowdus Glenda Herndon Barbara Croom Edna Hext Ann Herscher Sherry Hobbs Molly Jackson JoBeth Ford Geraldine Sizemore Rosemary Lawson Betty Sue Stoker Margaret Manning Sue Walling Roberta Martin Charlotte Watson Glenda Pryor Jackalyn Rainosek Shirley Rice Nancy Tennant Jane Turpen Marilyn Wall TENOR BASS Howard Bethel Ken Baxter Standley Campbell Charles Beene J. And so, on to victory the Odessa High cheerleaders led our football team and the student body. Victory not only in many of our games, but a new type of victory in spirit was their aim. Yelling their voices hoarse, jumping madly about until they were exhausted, waving their arms wildly through the air this was all just part of the routine they followed, and little thought was given to themselves, only to getting more and more spirit i in our games and rallies. This year's roster of six cheerleaders has been ably and faithfully assisted by the alternate cheerleaders, Eddie Latham and Sandra Steele. Here the brilliance of the gem once seen is not forgotten; the fragrance of the wilted flower is still as sweet; the gladness of the joys of yesteryear still abides within our hearts. Let not the drop from the glistening eye nor the sadness of the wounded heart dim those fond remembrances. May they, like those whom we fondly recall, dwell forever in the great Eternal Home.
