MRS LOREN VON BEHREN Kearney State Teachers College Holds Z year Elementary Certxfxcate Prevloully taught rn Thayer County Z years and lf2 year at Ragan ELVA ELLIOTT Kearney State Teachers College Holds Permanent Elementary Certificate Twenty two years an present position Teaches kmdergarten and grades l Z ,ann ff 7 I Sen :or Hzstorzes It was one cold cold mght m February that the Crowell famnly had FLORANCE a new member 1n the1r trxbe It was me If the stork had been late CROWELL another day I would have been born on leap year day but as mt was I missed zt by a few hours At the rxpe old age of five I started to school wxth Reta Turner lone Rxpp and Joyce Grxss mrss Elhott was my fxrst teacher and I thought all teachers were mce What a shock I got when I left her room The next ezght years went by wxth httle trouble It doesn't seem as lf It has been twelve years sxnce I left home to come to SCHOOL On July 17 1934 mn the small qu1etQ9 town of Odessa the warm JOYCE early mormng breezes brought forth the cry of a new born infant GRISS another gurl to Mr and Mrs G A Gr1ss a thxrd dxsappomtment Supposmg to be a boy I was to be named Jack but recovermg from the shock of another grrl my parents decxded to pumsh me by namlng me Joyce Rogenea Fxve years later I entered the Odessa prxrnary room Under the teachmg of Mxss Elva Elhott I made xt through my fxrst four years of school I stumbled on through to the emghth grade and then mto h1gh school from whxch I w1ll soon graduate I'll always remember all the wonderful txmes I had durmg my en rollment 1n the best school ln the W R V C my school O I-I S I was born August Z4 I934 m the Good Samarxtan Hospxtal the MAURICE youngest of four chmldren I started school at the age of fxve at East MELINE Odessa I attended thxs school for sxx years then went to Odessa Publ1c School m Odessa After completxng the exghth grade I lugh school I took muszc for four years and took part xn softball four years basketball four years and track four years I had perfect attendance m my Jumor year I have been m Jumor and Semor Plays Now xt 15 t1me to graduate so I m proud to say that I have got my educat1on xn Odessa Hxgh School On the mght of November I0 1932 a son was born to Mr and EUGENE Mrs John Rexcheneker at Kearney At the age of s1x I began REICI-IENEKER school at the Odessa Public Schools and went the fxrst grade there Then I started goxng to the East Odessa School and attended the East Odessa School for four years In 1944 I started zn the szxth grade at the Odessa Publxc School agam Durmg the four years m hxgh school I have partxc1pated m softball basketball track mus1c and dramatzcs On a warm breezy day July Z4 1934 a second ch1ld was born to IONE Mr and Mrs Emnl Rlpp Of course It happened that I was a gzrl RIPP so I recezved the name of lone Why I was gxven that name I wxll never know In 1939 I began to start my schoolmg at Odessa wxth Mxss Elllot as my teacher The next four years passed wxth few mxshaps measles and chxcken pox 1 moved from the prlrnary room to the grammar room for the flfth grade wxth Mrs Sheperdson as my teacher Mrs Toole was my snxth seventh and erghth grade teacher Fxnally xn 1947 I had entered the Freshman Class w1th lxttle dxffxculty I passed through the mnth grade m good cond1t1on except for Fresh man Imtlatxon Now lt seems that my tlme 1n O H S IS almost over I am proud to say that I have gaxned my educatxon zn the Odessa School 9 1 9 ' 0 . - , 9 started up the long flight of stairs, which everyone appreciates to do, to enroll in . . . . . . , Senzor H zstorzes Very early 1n the mormng on elect1on day November 9 1956 I RETA entered the sunny world at Elm Creek a very skxnny l1ttle babe of TURNER 3 pounds 3 ounces My growxng was slow and at the age of 5 l Z months I moved near Odessa with my parents sxster and brothers At the age of fxve 1 entered Odessa school wlth Mxss Elhott as my teacher I expect to fxmsh thxs vear 1951 A baby glrl was born to Mr and Mrs Orvxlle Walter March Z6 BERNIECE 1934 at the1r home near G1bbon She we1ghed 5 3f4 pounds It was WALTER decxded I would be named after my great grandmother When I was very small we moved to a farm 7 mxles west and l l Z mxles south fo Kearney We lxved there for s1x years I also started my educatxon there 1n l1ttle whxte schoolhouse called East Odessa When we moved to the farm we now l1ve on one mxle north of Odessa a very nervous gxrl entered the fxfth grade I entered my fxrst 4 H club a hot lunch project xn Odessa School I belonged to 4 H for sxx years talung var1ous projects I have belonged to cookxng and sewxng clubs My hobby orxgmally was collectmg horse statues but It was too slow I changed to collectmg match books and have a large amount of them much to my mother s dxsgust Now after the usual chxldhood dlseases such as measles mumps and chlcken pox I have fxnally reached the twelve grade In a very short whlle I wmll graduate from O H S but 1 w1ll never forget xt 10 . I I ll ' II ' ' ' she gave an encore I was 1nv1ted to come up to her apartment to meet her husband and s1x ch1ldren I was amazed to f1nd she had two sets of tr1plets I asked her how come she was skatxng when she saxd she was go1ng to be a nurse She sa1d she had started nursmg school There was an 1ce skat1ng rxnk near by and she went there often for she wanted to learn how to skate An 1nstructor there recogmzed her great talent and wxthout pay taught her to skate They fell madly 1n love and were marrned H15 parents were very r1ch but beheved thelr son should earn h1s own spendxng money That was why he worked as an mstructor H15 parents gave them the :ce show she was skat1ng 1n for a weddxng present Dev1lo her husband worked very hard to keep the show goxng at fxrst and now made S60 000 000 a year but they stxll l1ved as s1mply as possxble I fxnally found Eugene Re1cheneker among the turmo1l 1n Wash1ngton He IS now Secretary of Agrxculture Eugene has been proxrunent xn the nat1on's government for the last ten years When I met h1m for lunch he mvzted me to come to h1s apartment for supper and later attend a. party w1th hxm He sa1d he was very busy trymg to con trol 1nsects When he 1ntroduces one xnsect mn the country to get r1d of the other he has to mtroduce st1ll another one to control the one he has already 1mported On the whole he 15 domg a good Job Eugene IS the only bachelor 1n the Pres1dent s cabmet He IS very ellgxble and IS 1hV1tEd to practxcally every party gxven ln Wash1ngton 1n hopes he w1ll f1nd hxs future w1fe The party I went to w1th Eugene was the soclal event of the year The hostess was Mrs Tactful Words wxfe of the ambassador to the North Pole She personally met us at the door She was wearzng a very beaut1ful dress and a great many d1amonds At last I had found the whole class for she was Bern1ece Walter She had changed a great deal smce I had last seen her but I stxll but of course I had to declme her kmd 1nv1tat1on She was gomg to leave on a good w1ll tour of the world m weeks and she had to attend s1xteen char1ty benef1ts before she left Her home was very beaut1ful and contamed twenty fxve rooms The rooms contamed thmgs from all parts of the world She had made sxxteen round trxps of the world She had heard all the Sernors were domg so well I left for home after the party was over They were all so mce to me that I f1xed up my house to gmve a party for them 1 p1cked them up 1n my magxc carpet and took them to my home They all had so much fun that they decxded to get together every year Th1s proves you can never tell what people w1ll be do1ng 1n future years IX .41 W I6 recognized her. We elect new presidents . . . , - 4 Freshman Class Flve gxrls and three boys make up the bxggest class at Odessa the Freshmen They are Donna Marzolf Carolyn Noe Carol Walter Glorxa Moore Betty Baxter Lyle Swartwood Kenneth Nlarlatt and Jack Gr1ss We survived the xmtxatxon with only a few lnjurxes We are consxdered green by the upperclassmen th1s year but as all green things contlnue to grow we are not ent1rely hopeless Sophomore Class The Sophomore Class had s1x members Pat Todd Kathleen Dennxng Eleanor Blrt Colleen Crowell Raymond Marlatt and Donald Noe All the Sophomores took typxng the fmrst semester however the boys dropped xt at the end of the semester We studied bxology Englmsh and geography wxth the Freshmen All the Sophomores were enrolled ln dramatxcs The two boys were lettermen mn basketball They also partxcxpated for track All the gxrls were on the and Colleen had solos All the members of our class were members of the glee club We also served one mght of the D1str1ct Tournament On the Fr1day before Aprll f1rst the Sophomores gave the entxre hxgh school and the seventh and exghth grades an Aprxl Fool s Party Junzor Class The Junxor Class was the smallest class m hxgh school thls year Two boys Harold Todd Donald Gale and one gxrl Marcelene Innes The Jumors took Engllsh modern problems typmg and shop or home economxcs Don Gale has taken blology xnstead of English sxnce he took English last year The boys are partxcxpatmg mn athletxcs and Marcelene 15 taking gxrls athletics All three partxcxpated xn dramatxcs The Jumors worked hard ln order to raxse money for the Jumor Semor Banquet We have also helped the Semors put out the Cardxnal Reporter and the 1951 Annual Z5 volleyball team. Pat, Eleanor, and Colleen were inthe sextet.
