I . l J! Earth Sciences Explore Man's Environment Locked in the strata of the earth are untold secrets, clues to resources and answers to age-old riddles. All that remains for man is to acquire the knowledge to read the clues and unlock the secrets. Geology is the means by which this can be accomplished. Geology is the study of the earth's layers, the rocks and minerals which compose it and the forces which caused these evidences to he in existence. Geologists study the internal earth, including volcanic action, petroleum and fossil formation, as well as the external earth and its formation by glaciation, stream action and Wind erosion. , Included in this department is Anthropology, the study of man. This science includes two courses, physical anthropology and cultural anthropology. These include studies of the origin of man and of his racial and cultural variations. Edward Orton . . . ' + . il Primitive as well as highly civilized cultures are the subject matter for the anthropologist. Being taught -hy the earth science faculty is geography. The physical science includes a study of land forms, soils, climate and the distribution of bodies of water. This course goes hand in hand with geology and anthropology. Essential in today's world of technology and intensified research is the field of chemistry. Industry looks toward chemists for new developments in products, medicine looks toward chemists for solutions to disease, and science looks toward chemists for explanations. Basic chemistry is taught at Odessa College in two principal courses-chemistry and organic chemistry. Both serve to furnish stu- dents with a foundation for future use and reference. Psychology Is Valuable To Students. Educators Education and psychology are related topics in that the suc- cessful instructor should liave some understanding of his students' psychological make-up. Most important to aspiring educators are the Child Psychology and Educational Psychology courses. OC provides both as part of a complete two-year education course. Anyone planning a career in elementary or secondary educa- tion must complete a number of education courses before receiving his teacher's certificate. The psychology curriculum includes courses in Personal Ap- plications of Psychology and Child Psychology, and also an Intro- duction to Psychology course. The role of the psychologist in modern society is ever-increas- ing. Many careers are open in this field, from clinical to industrial psychology. Even to those not choosing a career in psychology, it is important and of use in everyday life and people-to-people relationships. It is of value to anyone comprehending what is presented in the course.
