Whether it be in academics, athletics, competitions, or plays, O-M’ers always give it their all. They consistently rate well and are always noted for their courtesy and manners when dealing with other schools. We’ve had a lot to be proud of in recent years, creating a fine tradition of excellence and quality. Even though most kids don’t always realize or appreciate it, O-M offers quite a range of studies, from Business to Teenage Concerns. The staff here strives to educate and prepare us for post-graduate plans and the wild outside world. Many of these dedicated individuals put in extra hours so we can enjoy a variety of after school activities. O-M is a fantastic school to attend and the spirit of its students is shown in the pages of The 1988 Odessanean. Enjoy! Mickey Terry and his junior high friends found the school a bit imposing the first couple of weeks. It didn’t take long for them to be com fortable. 4 Greg Lisk is working on his Course III homework in study hall. 2 OPENING with Student Life Kris Miller and Shelli Letteer are on their way to gym class. Check out Kris’ tan that got darker as the winter progressed. What would O-M kids do without O-M? Really, think about it. Without sports, dances, clubs, and fields trips, there wouldn’t be much to do. We don’t seem to realize how important school is to us. Not only does it fulfill our educational requirements, but also our social needs. O-M students are very active in all of the activities offered here. We are quite proud of our efforts and achievements. When entered in competitions, from sports to art shows, O-Mers always fare well. So, appreciate your school and all it does for you. Tom Schink tells us what he thinks of Freshmen. Freshmen Take a Nose Dive! During Initiation, October 2, the 9th Graders were officially inducted into the High School. Like every year, the new crop of Freshmen were humiliated, tortured, and degraded. Bobbi Gascon later said, ’Although it was extremely embarrassing, it was the most fun I have had in a while.’ Most of the 9th graders thought the same way. That night we saw a lot of creative costumes for the first time. Dave Smith crowned Miss Alpine 1987. Dressed in a bathing suit with a banner and a tinsel crown, Clay Grover made the perfect bathing beauty. John Senka and Christy Edwards proved that you have to pay attention in Health Class. John was the expectant ’mother’ and Christy performed her duties as an ’obstetrician.’ Michelle Strong and Michelle Reynolds displayed the fact that ’lowly Freshmen stick together’-literally. After being bound all night, they finally fell down and couldn’t get back up. Tim Mundt, surfing to 'Wipe Out’ in a wagon, was pulled around by Bobbi Gascon, the hula dancer. Satisfied, the avenging Seniors at the end of the hour, let the new Freshmen return to their normal selves to enjoy the dance. Rosie Colunio. Shirley Menzi. INITIATION 7 Mike Benjamin defies the laws of gravity only on Initiation Night. Lisa Reigns Homecoming ’87 Homecoming 1987 was a smashing success. We’ll never forget the beautiful fall night. The big night was preceded by the traditional parade of floats, the Marching Band which is annually created for the event, the first display of Homecoming candidates, and the big bonfire in back of the school. The night of October 16th finally arrived. The hair spray was flying, the floats were ready, the Color Guard was spiffy, the Marching Band was fine tuned, and the Football team was ready to kick butt. The initial kick-off for the game against Union Springs was an omen for the next hour of play. Our Indians totally dominated the guests who had driven a long ways for a lot of punishment. With this game, our Indians got on a winning streak after a tough season start. Coach Myers proved that he would again be the annual IAC winner. At half-time, Shawn Scott, with tails, directed the Band in a superb concert on the football field. The Color Guard strutted their flags with uncanny precision. After a fanfare, the candidates walked down the 50 yard line with their escorts. Retired teacher and coach, Mr Jack Davis, crowned Lisa Hoover as the 1987 Homecoming Queen. The escorts were G.Lisk, M.Parrott, R.Moshier, M.Parrott, J.Wood. It was a memorable Homecoming that will be remembered by all. 8 HOMECOMING Queen Lisa Hoover with her court: Rosie Colunio, Shirley Menzi. Steffanie Tague. Tracy Monks. An assortment of seniors and football players exhibit their school spirit. We Got the Bucket! Trick or Treat? It was Friday, October 30, 1987, and it was the day of the Bucket Game with Watkins. Who would win that dented bucket for the Schuyler County Football Championships? There was no doubt in the minds of the totally psyched O-M fans. During the Pep Assembly the student body went wild, especially the Class of ’90. The Cheerleaders did the rappin’ and the team was introduced to the screaming students. Everything was ready! On the grid at Watkins, the first half was tightly played. The score was tied 6-6. Then, something happened during half-time talk in the locker room. Our Indians came out and exploded near the end of 3rd Quarter. Wing Back Mike Kotmel ran for a 60 yard touch down pass and catch from Brian Clark. That TD sparked our offense and defense for a 4th Quarter romp that ended in a 24-6 beauty. It was our Bucket for the 5th year in a row. O-M Cheerleaders. The Hair Spray Squad, prove that their V for Victory was a successful omen for that night’s win. 10 PEP ASSEMBLY Below-The O M offense is ready to snap into another drive to the goal line. Will it ever be stocked again? He says that somehow it will. We’re waiting. In 1980, the newly elected Ronald Reagan walked onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and announced that with his administration there would come the era of the entrepreneur and the hard working businessman. He said there would be a climate wherein creative people with new ideas would succeed. Two brothers from O-M took him quite seriously. The idea for an in-school, student-operated refreshment concession was bom in the mind of Larry Beebe, entrepreneur extrordinare. His creation, Coke-Pepsi-MountainDew-Dr.Pepper,Inc., took off like a rocket and Larry quickly had a booming business selling pop to O-M’s thirsty scholars. After Larry graduated in 1986, O-Mer’s were without his services for a year until his brother, Chris, more commonly known as Cab, picked up where he left off. In the months before the ’87-’88 school year got under way. Cab spent much time thinking of new ideas for expanding the business. He had 1000 business cards printed promoting his new franchise and its products. On the first day of school, he and a few friends distributed them among the student body. Soon crowds formed around locker 68 and and its pin stripe, three piece suit- clad occupant to check out ’CAB’S CASH -N- CARRY’. They found, as the cards advertised, people could purchase just about anything they craved. Cab’s offered 4 kinds of pop, 4 kinds of gum, 5 varieties of chips, various candy bars, and a few miscellaneous products. Students could also make purchases on credit with 25% interest. The prices were reasonable yet profitable for Cab. In the 21 2 weeks Cab’s was in operation. Cab earned $150, following his theory that if you can’t make 100% on an item it’s not worth selling. Cab also held an after school job at Acme to supplement his income. He soon quit, finding that he could make more money running his own establishment. In the third week of school, Cab got nabbed for selling on school grounds. He served four nights detention and lost his business. Cab promises that he’ll somehow make a comeback. 14 CAB’S CASH-N-CARRY Rich, in his work clothes, puts the point across. Making a Difference Rich Garza at O-M On September 30, our school was visited by Rich Garza, an exprofessional football player, who brought an important message to our school about drug abuse. As a child, Garza knew that he wanted to be a pro athlete and he almost destroyed that dream through the use of drugs. In high school the recruiters saw flaws in his behavior. He had started drinking and doing drugs in the tenth grade. He let himself become a victim of peer pressure and his actions made him uncomfortable. Garza had to make an important decision. He had to decide to do drugs or play football. He made the right choice and ended up with a football scholarship which led to positions on the front lines of the Denver Bronco, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the San Antonio Gunslingers. Using his experiences, he catagorized his peers and students into four groups. These are the Slaves, the Social Users or 'Weekend Warriors’, the Experimenters, and the Non-Users. In 1982, he said that he 'put his trust in God’ and overcame his drug addiction. Since high school he became a new a new person who realizes his mistakes. Today he is retired from football and visits schools and rehabilitation centers telling his story and urging students not to make the same bad decisions that he made. All of 0 M turned out and learned how Rich made the decision to turn his life around. GARZA 15 Michele Koloski’s Big Come Back She Made It Back for The Start of School! Michele Koloski, O-M Sophomore, was finishing off the 1986 1987 school year last June. She took the Math RCT, passed it, went home expecting to have a pleasant summer on Sky Line Drive. When Michelle went to sleep that night she had a seizure and was taken to Schuyler Hospital. A trip was immediately arranged for Elmira. At St. Joseph’s Hospital, Michele got an EEG and a CATSCAN. The CATSCAN showed a growth in her brain. Next was a trip to the Arnot-Ogden Hospital for a Magnetic Resonance Image. This showed two tumors. An operation was discussed. The doctors warned that Michele might lose motor activity on her right side and a loss of her speaking ability. Yet, the operation had to be done. On June 28th, Dr. Kung, a neurosurgeon, spent 10 1 2 hours operating on Michele. He removed two turmors on the left side of her brain. One was the size of a plum. Michele was out for 8 days after the operation. In her condition, she should have been in a coma, but she woke up! She had to be given pain killers because the whole left side of her skull was opened up. Michele went home after three weeks. Tons of cards flowed in. Stuffed animals came in droves. Friends put out donation cans in Montour Falls to help out with the horrendous bills. Many came to visit. Cards came from churches saying that they were praying for her. The speedy recovery was amazing! When September rolled around, Michele was here for the first day of school. Michele walked around the halls of O-M with her splashy clothing and big smile. Great to have you back, Michele. 16 MICHELE K Above: Lovely Angela Viclcio la caught by the camera in the chorua room. Below left: Senior Maria Parrott ia learning to cook breakfaat for John. CANDIDS 17 A Peachy Oriental Evening 1987 Spring Formal May 23, 1987 was an evening of elegance and fantasy for those who atttended the Spring Formal held at Hidden Valley. Many long hours went into the planning and arranging of what turned out to be the event of the season. A group of juniors with big ideas met in Mrs. Titus’ room and organized a dinner dance under the theme of 'A Peachy Oriental Evening.’ Then, the day before the prom, the juniors transformed the dinning hall at Hidden Valley into an eastern fantasia of paper fans, twinkling trees, and origami cranes. Those who chose to attend the dinner before the dance experienced an ambrosial repast of a chicken or beef entree, green beans almondine, potatoes, and a dessert. The second half of the evening, dancing and the traditional crowning, was exquisite. The couples, donning their tuxedos and elegant gowns, danced the night away and strolled the walkways under a romantic sky. At the stroke of midnight, the royalty were crowned; Senior King Pat Murch and Queen Heather Gordon, Junior King John Heichel and Queen Rosie Colunio. Many memories were made on that night, not soon to be forgotten. It was a prom that will be hard to match, thanks to Mrs. Titus and the Class of 1988. Believe it or not, Odessa-Montour is great in Academics. We score well on the Regents test in June. The Regents Competency Tests are tops. O-M’ers have often scored a 100% success rate on these state wide tests. Let’s not forget that some schools discourage students if they ’think’ they might not pass the Regents test. At O-M everybody is encouraged to take the Regents and have a chance to shoot for the stars. In the new ACE program, our Juniors and Seniors were able to take Biology, Economics, English Composition, and Calculus on a college credit level. This gave some of our students a hint of collegiate demands. ACE people were seen walking around with huge, thick text books and burnt-out looks on their faces. A lot of homework was assigned but not handed in. The material was presented and the students had to work things out on their own. Most course grades were based on a few tests and that’s all. Homework marks were history. We produce a lot of winners here, academic winners too. Tim Ray. ACADEMIC DIVIDER 21 ®Ije (Eljrtgtmas The Senior High Band Puts on the Ritz The Winter Semi-Formal was sponsored by the Senior High Band under the direction of Mr Steven Shewan. Mr Shewan, it turned out, proved to be as good a social director as he is a band director. It was noted that not too many years ago O-M used to have a Christmas Formal. What happened? It quietly faded away. Yet, on December 23, 1987, the night of the last day of school, a new tradition was hopefully started. The Semi-Formal was held at the Fountainbleau Restaurant on the shores of Cayuta Lake. There were a lot of couples present, those going steady and those who just got together for a great evening of fine dining, dancing, music, and great holiday atmosphere. Adults and students alike rocked to the sounds of Belinda Carlisle and Pretty Poisen. Not only did Mr Shewan do a great job, but the O-M’s little band of helpers proved their skills by doing a their job to create a great evening. Things went so great that we’re sure that we’ll see Christmas Semi-Formal: Part 11 for ’88. This is what memories are made of. Above: Dance Master. Mr Shewan. hopes Ruth can keep up with him. Sounds Splash off the Choral Reefs Senior High Chorus The Senior High Chorus is a fine group of singers under the choral direction of Ms. Dawn Fetter. This fine performing group sings every 4th period, puts on concerts, and even goes “on the road“. Getting outside of Schuyler County is a real treat. The Chorus accepts invitations for choral competitions at Her-shey Park, Pa. and Mansfield University. They travel north to Williard State Hospital and entertain the elderly. A real special treat is the exchange visit with Clyde-Savannah Central School. Our chorus stays overnight and performs at Clyde. Then, Clyde students visit Odessa! The O-M Chorus works hard, has a good time, does well in competitions, and above all, they bring a lot of happiness to the world. SOPRANO SECTION-Front: Y.Yamazaki. G.Sommers. B.Taylor. D.Webster. Our own Mr Shewan and Ms Fetter are members of the Zone 15 Chapter in the Southern Tier and Central New York area. They encourage the 32 school members of Zone 15 to congregate once or twice a year and share the •beauty of music and each other’s company. On November 13, 1987, Junior High students from thirty schools descended on O-M and instantly organized into a 100 member chorus lead by a professor from the Ithaca College music department, a 50 member string orchestra lead by a teacher from Fayetteville-Manlius, and an 80 member instrumental band lead by a high school teacher from Genesee. Students came from all over. Some of our high school musicians hosted 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students from places like Downsville, Horseheads, Wellsville, Wayne, Pal-Mac, Watkins Glen, Pen Yan, Dundee, Bath, Sa-vonna, Addison, North Rose-Wolcott, and all the Elmira and Corning Junior High schools. O-M’ers participating were Maggie Wood, Nathan Ivan, David Slusser, Serena Banks, Tracy Cook, Julie Malnoske, and Alva Robbins. These carefully selected Junior High musicians arrived at O-M and started to practice as groups for the first time. Rehearsals started at 2:30 and went until 8:00 that night. Dinner was served in the cafeteria that night. 40 musicians stayed in homes around town and the rest commuted. Saturday was no day off. Rehearsals started at 9:00 AM and went straight through to 3:00 PM. At 4:00 all of the three groups performed in concert. It was the end of a great weekend. New friends were made. Great music was performed. Great music teachers donated a lot of time. And, very important, new ideas and new people were brought into the halls of O-M. A «mall part of the huge, mass chorus. Mr Nick Golowich, O-M English 9 teacher, is also the advisor of the Drama Club. In December, 1987 the Drama Club got together and decided to do something different for the theater fans of our area. The group performed a delightful collection of one act plays on the O-M auditorium stage. The difference was that the audience sat right on the stage with the performers! This was an intimate theatrical experience with no separation between the actors and audience. The Club worked hard and performed on a Friday night, and then did two performances on a Saturday right before Christmas. Mr Golowich told our staff that he was very pleased with our hard working O-M’ers and was equally pleased with the quality of the performances. A great backstage crew pitched right and they deserve credit too. The council should be dedicated to enhancing the power of the students and, also, the beauty of our school. It should hold regular meetings with school officials to keep on top of current happenings and changes. There should be school spirit activities and holiday decorating sponsored by this club. Our grievances should be voiced through the Student Council. As one of the more prestigious organizations at O-M, the Student Council should represent our finest governing body available. In the past two years they have expanded greatly Their most successful year thus far. 1986-1987, saw many new, creative ideas. In that year they organized a massive safe-driver campaign for prom night and produced a 35 minute film titled 'The Beer Run’ for the Reader’s Digest Challenge. In June, there was a concerted effort to persuade graduating seniors to use designated drivers after their celebrations. Flyers were put on cars during graduation ceremonies. This year, under the new advisor. Miss Mitchell, S.A.D.D. participated in the Homecoming activities with a float sponsored by DeSarno’s Body Shop. It showed the community that they really care about preserving the safety of our highways. YOKO 55 Girls Boys State After the 1986-87 school year, two groups of bright, talented students attended summer sessions of ‘State1 to learn more about the government of New York. The experience also offered a chance to meet many new friends from all over the state. Girls State, held at Cazenovia College, was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and conducted under their traditional standards of ‘properness-. The young ladies were required to wear dresses to all meals and gatherings, except during the numerous downpours throughout the week. We spent most of our time learning all about the functions of our state, and campaigning for positions within it. Boys State proved to be a totally different concept. Sponsored by the American Legion, the men were treated to a more militaristic style of living for that week. Le Moyne College hosted these fine young men, giving them a similar taste of our state government. Just like the ladies, they were split up into two parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists. Local groups sponsored our O-M’ers so that they would learn about democracy first hand. We know they did! The Boys Staters-Front: Ricky Churches. David Smith. O-M’ers either participate or cheer their peers onward to victory. Before O-M started winning a few years ago, we were ignored. Now, we have earned prestige all over Central New York. Our teams are winners, and hopefully, will always be so. Sometimes parents and teachers get upset about all of the sports activity. Parents don’t like to drive their kids to practice, pick them up afterwards, or wait in the parking lot for the bus to roll in after a road trip. Teachers complain about the excuse, '1 had a game last night.’ Yet, a teacher study group found that athletes perform just as well, if not better, than students who do not participate. Sports does not hurt academics. O-M athletes learn to budget their time for sports, still get their homework done, and at the same time have a lot of fun. SPORTS DIV 59 The Maroon Tide Varsity Football How will O-M look this year? Can they repeat the winning season of last year? These and many more questions were being asked after losing eight starting Seniors and the last two games of the ’86 season. While everyone was confused about the IAC being split into sections, then into 8 divisions, this year’s gridders were busy living up to last year’s accomplishments. After the Indians started the season 0-3 in two last minute loses, the team made a huge turn around by defeating Moravia, Union Springs, and Spencer-Van Etten. Then, in Schuyler County’s most prestigous event of the sports year, the Indians defeated Watkins Glen 24-6 to keep the coveted Water Bucket for the fifth straight year. After that, O-M went on to become the Divisional Co-Champs and play Candor for the IAC Championship. Although O— M turned the ball over eight times, they went ahead with four minutes to go when Candor scored to win the title. The Indians then traveled to Chenango Valley to play tough Walton in the Section IV Bowl Game in which only seven other teams participated in. The Indians lost 42-14. During the season O-M placed some stats on the boards within Division 6. Brian Clark finished the season as the leading passer with over 1,000 yards of successful tosses. On the recieving end of Brian’s passes was Joel Grover who finished as the leading reciever for the Division. Also, Scott McCarty opened up the offense as the leading rusher. Defensively, Dave Lynch finished the season as one of the top tacklers. While the Indians will be looking forward to next year, they’re very happy with a Divisional Co-Championship. by Russ Myers Norman West is putting his academic clothes away to get ready for practice. The Varsity finished 1st in their division in the IAC with a record of 10-4. This was their 1st divisional win since 1982. The JV’s finished 2nd in the division with a 11-3 record. The team noted that the season was not only successful in the box scores but was fun also. It was also hard work with Coach Larison's tough three hour practices. Spirit, Sportsmanship, and Co-operation made this good team a great team. This year had to give some sad farewells to five Seniors who gave it their all for many seasons. Departing Class of '88 players were Debbie Gifford, Steffanie Tague, Vicky Sills, Maria Parrott, and Wendy Benjamin. Next year Coach Larison will be looking forward to an outstanding lineup of underclasswomen. There’s a lot of height, spirit, and talent waiting for next year. Both J.V. and Varsity did their personnal best to get the O-M crowd into the wave of Indian spirit. The Varsity girls did an outstanding job with their rendition of “Wipe Out“ at Senior Night. The seniors, Amy Stayer, Rosie Colunio, Lisa Hoover, Shirley Menzi, and Cindy VanGalder choreographed the pom-pom routine. We were so proud of the effort and time the squad put into making that night special. When performing the routine during half-time of the Spencer game, the crowds stayed in their seats and gave up their pizza and hot chocolate to watch the girls “ride the waves and cheer the team on to victory. Whether people realize it or not, much work is put into each practice and cheer. The squad spends many a grueling hour in the elementary gym thinking of creative new ways to heighten crowd spirit. Besides cheering at the games, the Cheerleaders are a symbol of the attitude of our school towards athletics. All during the season they brightened the halls with peppy signs supporting the team, winning season or not. So we thank the Cheerleaders for supporting our gridders and always having those cheerful smiles on their faces. VARSlTY(Above)-Front: A.Stayer. R.Colunio. S.Menzi. L.Hoover. For the answei to this question we turned to the members of the girls swim team. As we arrived at school, we often found swimmers who had been in the pool since 5:30 a.m. The practices were excruiciat-ing, usually consisting of at least 5 hard sets. These sets ranged from 5x500 on 7 min. to 20x50 on 50 sec. Then, of course, there was always the dreaded underwater 25’s. Many of us didn’t understand why they did it. When asked about this they would reply, “We know it’s worth the extra effort,“and obviously it was. For example, O-M was the only team in the 1AC to defeat Lansing in a dual meet. Aside from team victories there were many individual accomplishments: Monks broke two pool records in the 100 and 200 Free, Kotmel set two school records in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly. Glover, Vickio, Kotmel, and Monks also set a pool record in the 400 Free Relay. The team finished with a 13-4-1 record, and 3rd in the IAC League. At IAC Championships, O-M did extremely well with Monks, Kotmel, Senka, Lynch, and Vickio all placing in the top three. Monks, Kotmel, and Lynch continued to place in the top three at the Sec IV Class C Meet. Monks and Kotmel qualified for A-Sectionals where Monks took a 5th a 6th and Kotmel finished 9th. Next year we will miss the Senior Captains Kotmel, Monks, and Senka. But we are looking forward to promising seasons with many younger team members. Jared Fowler. GIRLS SWIM 79 Cross-Country '87 at O-M was a lot of hard work as usual. The team broke in a new coach, Ms Nancy Nelson. The co-ed team ran for miles out there in the cool afternoons of another lovely Schuyler County fall. What better way to enjoy yourself after school than watching the leaves change, socializing with your teammates, and putting your body in top physcial condition. It’s all for the big competition of running a tortuous three mile run against another school. X-C is a curious combination of team and individual effort. It is not only a great sport, but a tough one. Individually, Maggie Wood and Karen Bryington earned their way to the 1AC Small School All Star Team. Karen finished 4th and Maggie finished 8th. And that is the one thing O-M certainly does not lack. The students here are quite a diverse group of people. There exists in infinite an array of personalities, opinions, and attitudes. Each are unique and origional. It is the diversity that makes O-M such a fascinating and special place to be. All you have to do is walk through the halls and observe peoples’ dress, walk, and conversation to know that there is quite a variety within the student body. Each person has a role to play and a purpose here, and it is the small pieces of the big picture that make the world go around. Shawn Scott latched on to the new kid on the block. The Class of 1988 Proudly Dedicates This Yearbook to Mr. Vincent Evans Along with his everyday struggle to teach basic math to junior high students, Mr. Vincent Evans has the tough job of guiding the Senior Class activities. Most people think that being a Senior Class adviser is a piece of cake, but it is a tremendous job that only a special kind of person can do. That special person at O-M is Mr. Evans. As class adviser, the jobs, big and small, are endless. Mr. Evans does them all and does them well. Just to name a few, he sets up the whole undergraduate (K 11) picture day, he organizes the the magazine sales, he helps arrange Freshman Initiation, he computes Senior credits, he sets up the Senior Class trip to Washington, D.C., and he co-ordinates the graduation ceremonies and announcements. He is even in charge of the caps and gowns! We, as Seniors, recognize the super job that Mr. Evans has done for us and all of his former Senior Classes. The acknowledgement for his terrific job is long overdue. Congratulations, Mr. Evans, thank you so much for everything that you have done, and... for all you do, this book’s for you! Mr. Evans at Initiation Night with Freshman Adviser Mrs Lovell, and Freshman inductee. Serena Banks. 126 DEDICATION  4 i
