The Class of '87 had been waiting for four years to do to the the Freshmen what had been done to them a long time ago. What humiliation! Freshmen were dressed down in an array of disgusting clothes. Freshmen had to crawl on the floor and push pennies with the noses. Freshmen had to propose to teachers. Freshmen, just put simply, were treated badly. Yet, they enjoyed every minute of it. Now that they were initiated and proved their worth to be O-M’ers, they were, at 8:00 PM, officially made High Schoolers. Junior High was finally behind them. O-M’ers spend a lot of time and effort getting ready to celebrate the big day. Floats are planned and built days ahead of time. Cheerleaders work and practice hard as usual. The Marching Band is created for this event and spends a lot of time marching on the football field during 5th period. The Flag Team Drill Squad fine tunes its precision skills. The O-M Indians were scheduled to face IAC League powerhouse, Candor. Things start to build up on the night before, Thursday, when the floats parade through Odessa to the football field for the annual bonfire and dough-nut-a-thon. Then, Friday night, the rain fell in epic, Biblical proportions. The floats were destroyed by the rain and the parade was called off, yet the Homecoming candidates stood up to the elements. Then the Candor Indians fought their last stand against the O-M Indians. Our Indians won as expected with a score of 9-0. David Parker and Mrs Brenda Peters. The cast and backstage crew worked very hard and were surprised to find out how much hard work has to go into a dramatic effort. All of the hard work came together and superb performances were presented on November 21st and 22nd. A sneak preview was presented to the student body. After this play, we’re all looking forward to another gem for next year. 28 HKAMA CLUB Below: Roy is being ignored, as usual. Right Center: Mike looks on as Roy talks to his invisible friend. In the past school year we were pleased to take Ana Rivera into our school. The first day she walked into the school we loved her bright smile and sparkling eyes. She got right into the flow by joining sports teams, joining the Ski Club, and every day she improved her English. Ana quickly learned what real cold weather is like. Fortunately she left us in the hot summer time and got ready to go back to her tropical South America. Ana, we will remember you always and you’ll have friends in Odessa-Montour forever! 34 FOREIGN EXC IIAXGE Jaime Marshall Goes to (tWtnatm [dime's home in West Germany, a brick house with a tile roof. Hello Students at OMCS: have spent the past year in West Germany! I came to Germany with a lot of wrong ideas based on ignorance. You’ve got to live here to understand German life. I was told that Germans were a ’cold people'. I have not yet met a person of that description. They are reserved at first, but once you get to know the Germans they are very friendly. There is no real school life. You go to school to learn. There are NO activites or sports. Everything is academic and very intense. It is unheard of here to be unprepared in school. Everyone does their work and everyone wants to do their best. When I first got here I think my fellow students thought I was from Mars. Now that I have learned more German I find it easier to be part of things. To get to school I ride a bike for about five miles. When I first found that out. I thought I’d die. Biking is made interesting because the land is very flat, windy, rainy, and cold as the wind blows off the ocean. The trees are bent because of all the wind. I have joined a girls volleyball club. These girls know how to play! They are all able to spike really well. The season lasts all year. My team is the best in the league. As I write this letter I’m finding it difficult to compose this and I hope it comes out OK. I’ve learned a lot of German and I’m thinking in German. Your Friend. Chorus in the beginning of the year was filled with talk of a ’dream cho-| rus’ and of how we all wanted to be like one big, happy family. We had a tough start trying to find the right blend of voices with such a large group. The bass section was incredible considering the inexperience of the new members. After a few rehearsals, with this section, Miss Fetter whipped them into shape. The angelic Sopranos sounded absolutely celestial with their enthusiastic attitude. The determination of the altos and tenors helped the dream come alive. Throughout the year, Miss Fetter taught and urged co-operation and hard work. The family atmosphere made the year a memorable one for the Seniors and it left great expectations for the next year’s Chorus. Those of faint heart and body often stay away. In what other sport does one volunteer to run six or seven miles in a light practice? It's like being in the Marine Coprs with Coach Haight as your drill sargeant. In IAC meets our runners have to chum out three gruelling miles and everybody gives their all. Even though this is a quiet sport without too many spectators, we know that they are always running around the neighboring country-side. Cross-Country was not seen at O-M for a few years until it was revived by Coach Scott and then taken over by Coach Haight. The Tioga game was supposed to be THE challenge for Indians. It turned out to be a romp over this tradionally strong squad of the IAC. Brad Clark rushed for a career record number of 3,500 yards in the Twin Tier. Dave Sidle burned up the field as a small, cagey, and fleet-footed full-back. Jason Confer had the magic fingers that caught the important passes that put points on the board. The Krunch Bunch on the Indian line was feared by all and kept the scores low. Early on the team destroyed Watkins on O-M turf and they'll never be the same. More than once the K-Bunch held the oppositon to under 100 yards and no score. In post season action, our Indians hit tough competition head on and got beat for the IAC Championship with a squeaker of 7-8. In Section IV action, the Indians got beat by powerhouse Delhi by 26-27. As a matter of fact, we were the IAC Small School Champs last year. Cheering takes a lot of hard work. It is not just a bunch of airheads jumping around with a lot of sloppy arm movements and leg kicks. Cheerleaders have to be strong and flexible. The must have total concentration. Everyone has to have a high level of co-ordination to make the team look unified. We are not out there to shake our fannies or fling our hair around. We are out there to support our teams and show them that we are proud of them. We are there to get the athletes psyched up and keep their spirits high. We also have to deal with the crowd. We have to get them cheering and at the same time make sure they show good sportsmanship. This is not always easy when they think that the refs made a bad call. We know that cheerleading is not for everyone. Some of you couldn't even imagine yourselves attempting it. Some of us could never play volleyball or run cross-country. But, we are more than willing to support those teams. Remember, no matter where we go. we're all from O-M, and we should all support each other. As we are preparing to leave OMCS during these last days, we found our thoughts going back to our first days in school, 13 years ago. We decided to dedicate this Yearbook to all of you When we were five years old left home for the first time and entered kindergarden. In that first year and after, you taught us how to act around other people, you taught us our 3 R's, you taught us how to play in a group, you zippered our coats, and even helped us with our boots on snowy or rainy days. In the upper grades you prepared us for Junior High and Senior High School. Looking back, we don't know where you got all of your patience, but we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. WE LOVE YOU ALL! and again, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! 108 hlllKATlOY
