ODESSA-MONTOUR CENTRAL SCHOOL COLLEGE AVENUE ODESSA, NEW YORK 14869 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS CHANGE (chanj), v. to make or become different in some way; alter. The 1985-1986 Yearbook has used the word change to characterize the yearbook. First of all, color photos are being used within the Yearbook. This idea of color pictures was kept a secret in the yearbook staff which proved to be a colorful surprise when everyone received their Yearbook. During the year when we tried to hide the color photos we code named it special. We think that name is appropriate because having color is special. The second change that occured was the use of a computer program called TYPEST‘R. This technological landmark was a great asset to the staff. Information was entered in the computer and the data would go straight to the company by a computer telephone hookup. We saved a lot of money by doing the 'dirty work' of the company and had a great time doing it. Is a matter of fact, the savings allowed us to afford color this year. The Yearbook staff hopes you enjoy the changes made and appreciate the work put into making the 1986 Yearbook. Right: Mr Claire loves to pass out papers to some of his favorite seniors- Colleen Donnelley, Skip McCarty, Denise Parrott, and Vanessa McDaniels. Above: Denise Wilson waits cheerfully for her grade as Mr Claire passes out more papers. 4 DEDICATION Mr Eric Claire All right ladies and gentlemen, today we are going to discuss Catch-22. If I could have just three questions or one would be great... But 1 don't want to beat it to death. Okay, let's go over some things that I thought were important. Any problems and or questions? Going once. Let's look at the Glencoe book. Now don't moan, gee you guys. I'm giving you till Wednesday and it's not a long assignment. Boy, try to be a nice guy and all I get are complaints. I want to make it do-able. Now if you want a grade that begins with a 9, you bet- ter do the assignment. When wandering in the south corridor these words will echo in your ears. Mr Claire is not your ordinary teacher. He doesn't teach History, Math, or any other mundane class. No, he teaches senior English. It takes a lot of patience, determination, and a good sense of humor. Mr Claire is a very courageous man to day in and day out put up with the age old disease called senioritis. Titles like King Lear, A Farewell to Arms, and Oedipus brought many moans and groans to Mr Claire, but still he pressed on. He feels we need to reach beyond those junior high love stories and read the classics. Maybe some of us don’t understand what you mean now Mr Claire, but I’m sure we will. Thanks for putting up with us and being such a great guy! DEDICATION 5 Above: Cindy VanGalder shows off her Rick Springfield, Cathode Ray Tour tee shirt. Student Life Along with academic aspects of O-M, there are many social, school sponsored events that are conducted that round out our school as a place for the total individual. Homecoming gives senior high students a chance to get together and argue about who will volunteer their house to make the class float and what the theme will be. If you are lucky enough, you go to another event. The Prom. Themes, band, decorations, dinner reservations, flowers, and tuxes and gowns are all thoroughly discussed all for a refined night of dancing. The Prom gives the school something to look forward to in the Spring. It also gives the younger girls something to dream about and the younger boys something to have nightmares over. It's a pretty special night for everyone attending because the curfews are usually extended and the school never looks that good day Vanessa McDaniels wonders if Mr Claire is right. Is it true about Iago and Othello? or night. Couples attending The Prom feel like pretty special people that night. The Class of '86 exchange student, Rebekka Plate, taught us a lot about West Germany and about European fashions. Rebekka's fashion statement was dyed diapers-yes that favorite from childhood. A cloth dyed in various colors and worn as scarf wrapped around the neck. The Band and the Chorus are not exactly like our regular academic experiences in that we have to take part in a concert in order to pass. These groups demand a lot of hard work and spread the joy of music. So, O-M has a lot for the student in all areas of activity outside of the academics. We must give credit to the teachers who help us as proctors and advisors and make this aspect of our life possible. O-M is important in our rural setting. 4s one high school teacher said, 'This is probably the place where you'll be treated best in your life.' 6 STUDENT LIFE DIVIDER Rotary Exchange Student: Rebekka Plate Ich habe viel Neues kennengelernt seit ich hier bin, und ich moechte mich bei vielen von Euch da fuer bedanken, dass Ihr mir Anfang geholfen habt mich einzuleben. Danke! I got to know many new things since I am here and I want to thank many of you who helped me at the beginning to get to know the surroundings. Living as a member in a new family, going to a different school, knowing noboby, and slow but sure getting to know the people is a very interesting and valuable experience I made and I am happy about that! Thanks! Rebekka Plate 8 EXCHANGE Clockwise from front left: Dulcie Gifford, Robert Kane, Owen Burgess, Denise Parrott, Almon McCarty, Rock Whiting, Michelle Wheaton. Middle: Mike Lewis. Girls State was held at SUNY Albany and O-M was represented by Michelle Wheaton, Dulcie Gifford, and Denise Parrott. Girls State was a iveek long excursion designed to educate girls about governmental procedures in New York State. Upon arrival, we were the rulers of a mythical 51st state. There were party leaders, caucuses, debates, and conventions. We became senators of this state. The lectures from government members were informative but the actual participation in political functions, such as the tedious elimination of party candidates running for offices, really gave us an understandiang of how politics work. Boys State was held at Siena College with quite a different atmosphere compared to Girls State. The boys were bluntly greeted by the US Marine Corps. They had to march and do pushups all the time. Boys State created a simulated state and local government structure. Skip McCarty was a county legislator and an assistant superintendent of schools. He felt it gave him a chance to get out and meet some guys from all over the state. Mike Lewis learned how the government works and realizes why they don't get very much done. Rock Whiting was a superintendent of schools. Girls and Boys State participants came back with mixed emotions. A few came back with a bountiful supply of knowledge concerning the functions of New York State government. G B STATE 9 A Night In Paris The theme of the 1985 ]r Sr Prom was A Night in Paris. Outside it was rainy, but inside our cafeteria was magically transformed into a Parisian ambience. 4s we entered freshmen maids greeted us in a warm garden setting. We danced the night away around a lovely bubbling water fountain. The musical theme was REO Speedwagon's Can't Fight This Feeling as performed by Nick Gillette. The mood was further enhanced by flowers and French prints. Mrs Titus said 'It was an elegant affair.' Right: That's not very lady-like, Laura!! 'It was great,' said senior Dennis Chapman, summing up the exact feelings of most of his classmates. Others did not agree. 'It's boring,' remarked one senior, 'they should have them dress up in the day instead of just at night.' When asked how she liked it, another anonymous senior said 'actually it wasn't that great. They don't let us use cow manure any more.' Of course the freshmen did not enjoy it. 'It was the most humiliating experience in my life!' screamed Cassie 'Mufffy' Foley, who spent most of the night in a trash can. Most freshmen complied so they will be able to initiate when they are seniors. 'I thought the seniors put a lot into their props, instead of just throwing guys into girls' clothes and girls into guys' clothes, they had interesting ideas,' said sophomore Karen Kotmel The BIG stars of the evening were sumo wrestlers Tom Strong and Chris Beebe. Senior initiator Larry Beebe said he was surprised when he put on Tom's little outfit and found 'he was wearing blue underwear, I was expecting him to wear white ones,' he joked. Larry went to say 'it was BIG fun, I think they had fun too. Lisa Bump and Wayne Pelchar enjoy a romantic dance Above right: Seniors Laura Lynch, Cynthia Cratsley, and Lisa Cannon are fighting pollution by putting trash, like Muffy Foley, where it belongs. Sharon W?yland asked Stacy Sayre and Kris Miller. Left: Shaun Cannon can not believe his eyes! The sumo match he has been waiting to see finally has arrived at the O-M cafeteria. INITIATION 13 Homecoming It was a typical October evening. Everyone was ready for the Homecoming festivities. The floats were parked on the softball field, and the band was warming up. But in the locker room, the winning plan was on the drawing board. Denise Parrott said, 7 think the crowd was the most psyched it has ever been.' 'The game was very hard hitting and physical and the candidates for queen were lovely,' said Mr Taylor. Dulcie Gifford became 1985 Homecoming queen and received a kiss from Mr Martin. After the final score, Odessa beat Groton 21 to 14 but Mark Decker said, 'It was a tough game.' But all in all, October 11th marked a special moment in the lives of many. Here's Tammy VanNess showing the winnning sophomore float. Their victorious theme was Chop'em away. Could Debbie Gifford be that half-slaughtered Groton player? 14 HOMECOMING The Freshmen seem to think they are No.l with their rottcnfloat. Honor Society is an institution deeply engrained in our school for over 30 years. The students are put on an eligibility list if they maintain an 85 average. The teachers evaluate the student on their leadership, service, character, and attitude. Honor Society officers were Dulcie Gifford Pres, Bob Kane V-P, Wendy Roblyer Trea, Jeanette Dillon Sec. Student Council is another institution that has been around a long time. It's the only form of government in school. The main goal of this ten year old club is to gain and spread knowledge of art and art appreciation. This year the Art Club and art students went on several field trips to museums, entered work in two art shows, and sponsored face painting and the 2nd Annual Fine Arts Banquet. For the past decade, the Art Club has taken a cultural arts trip to New York City. This year they sponsored a ten day trip to Europe during Easter vacation. The itinerary included artistic highlights of France, Italy, and a short stop in Switzerland None of this would be possible without the enthusiasm of the Art Club advisor, Mrs. Penny Titus. Many long hours go into practicing for the concerts that the Band performs bi-annually. Doug Moss (composer of Fusion Funk) said, 'We work harder than most bands in the area.' Some of the Band members feel that it's a place where they can express themselves freely and become cultured in the finer aspects of life. Lee Titus re- plied, 'Jazz Band is my fine arts highlight of the day.' While Bob Kane feels it's a place where freedom of expression is abundant. One anonymous musician stated, 'We live and die for 5th Period!' In researching this story we found that the Band Room is one of the most popular and productive places in the school. 'The Band Room is an educational room. Most of you hear rock at home, so listen to something else to broaden your tastes said Mr Shewan. Bottom left corner: Boys and girls of all different grades get along in the Chorus Chorus The Odessa Senior High Chorus was very busy this year earning money for their trip to Ocean City, New Jersey. This was the biggest project the Chorus has ever attempted. It was a big convention of high school choruses from the east coast. Famous judges ajudicated our performances. The Chorus had many sales to fund this excursion such as the annual cheese sale, candy bars, and Valentine cookies. This year they tried a new fund raiser, a Rock-A-Thon, which is where Cho- rus members earned pledge money for every hour spent in a rocking chair. This year's Chorus was blooming with talent. With the addition of twelve guys for the bass section. At first they were unbalanced because of some voices were changing but later after some practice, they sounded like polished professionals. A few members went to the NYSSMA Competition and everyone enjoyed Music In Our Schools Week. Under the direction of Miss Fetter and Rocky Whiting, accompanying on piano, the O-M Senior High Chorus has continued to please all. 20 CHORUS Below: Gina Kellogg and Jaymee Crosley are trying to stay on key. TEAM SPIRIT! Sports are a very important aspect of life at Odessa -Montour High School. Almost everyone of the students are involved in sports in some way or another. The Yearbook staff computed that 45% of the Junior-Senior High School participates in the sports program. Games, meets, and matches create a focal point for the O M community. Students and adults alike come together with a common cause to cheer on our boys and girls. Friday night football games have the biggest attendance and the basketball games create the most excitement as they are played in our cheesebox gym. The class of '89 had the most athletes with 53% on at least one sports team. 24% were on two teams, and 8% were on three teams. The class of '87 came in second with 51% on one team, 22% on two teams, and 5% on three teams. The Senior Class came in third with 49% on one team, 29% on two teams, and 7% on three teams. The class of '90 rates fourth in participation with 47% on three teams, 17% on two teams, and 3% on three teams. Then the class of '88 with 45% on one team, 15% on two teams, and 1% on three teams. Last is the class of '91 with 26% in one sport, 4% on two teams, and none participated in three sports. Only 39% of all the athletes are girls at O-M, but, interestingly enough, 57% of the athletes in the Senior Class are girls! FOOTBALL When Coach Roger Myers came into camp in August he was looking at his youngest team in years. Only two people with any game experience returned from the previous year: Brad Clark and Mark Decker. Little did the rest of the league know that at the end of the season O-M would end up in the Championship Game at Cornell, and the school's first Sectional game at Chenango Forks. O-M fought to a 7-0 record by beating Lansing, Tioga, and keeping the Bucket from Watkins. In the Championship game, O-M played well despite losing 31-7 to Newark Valley, and a week later they bowed to Delhi 29-0 on a mud ridden field to end up Section IV Class D runner up. Several players made postseason all star teams. All Lakes Region: Skip McCarty, Brad Clark, Mark Decker, Eric Taber, Pat Angle, Lyle Goossen, Mark Clauson, and Ed Bovaird. As of February their record was 15-1 and they won the division championships. When asked what they thought of basketball, Owen Burgess said, 'There's so much excitement because you never know who’s going to win since the league has developed into such a competitive group.' 'Playing basketball gives me a sense of prestige and makes me feel important because I can contribute to such a successful team,' said Greg Gavich. While Doug Avery and Pat Murch said that it kept them out of trouble and keeps them in shape. But Skip McCarty said just two words explain why he goes out for sports-fun and enjoyment. Heart! Pride! Tradition! In an interview, Mr Williams felt these words characterized the Varsity Girls Basketball team. Heart He feels this team has a lot of it. When asked what he thought of the of the girls, he said that they are 'one of the nicest bunch of kids.' Pride and Tradition Mr Williams thought the senior girls have a great influence on the younger ones. He's very proud of their achievements. He feels they work very hard and get along great. When asked what they thought of basketball, Lisa Cannon said, 'there's a personal satisfaction when your team does well and you achieve success.' While Jeanette Dillon said, 'basketball helps to build up your self-esteem and creates 32 GIRLS BASKETBALL lasting memories within the team.’ Denise Wilson felt it was a change from other sports, like swimming and track. She said, ’it's team effort. All of the glory doesn't go to one person, it goes to the team.' But, Missy Brace and Sharon Wayland felt a little different. They feel that it proves that girls can play the same sport as guys. Our foreign exchange student, Rebekka Plate (who made a basket at Newfield!) likes playing ball here in America and especially likes cheering on the team. When asked about the JV's, Miss Haight commented that her team has a great potential for future years and are learning valuable skills. As of early February the JV's were 11-4. They even captured 1st place at the JV Christmas Tourna- ment. Miss Haight praised her girls by saying that, 'they are young and definitely hard working. They are also a very close knit team.' When asked why they played basketball, Kim Saunders said, 'it’s a real sport. It's competitive,' and Robin K. replied, 'it gives you a sense of self-confidence.’ Co-Captains Denise Wilson and Jeanette Dillon of the Varsity said, 'It wouldn't be the same with Tommy as our coach!' It looks like O-M girls basketball has a great future here. It has HEART, PRIDE, TRADITION, and above all Mr Williams!!! Mr Williams is asking for some help from above at the Newark Valley game. GIRLS BASKETBALL 33 Trying to rebuild the guys swim team after the loss of many record holding swimmers in the Class of '85, is a hard task but that's just what Coach Scott Westervelt set out to do this year. Then loss of 9 more swimmers who couldn't make it through the first few weeks of practice dwindled the team down even more. Those left are hard working, dedicated swimmers. The Yearbook staff went to interview Coach Westervelt and the team one day during their practice. After a few jokes about how he was the 'lowest paid coach in the universe' and how 'this is the longest winter of my life’, Mr Westervelt gave us some serious comments. His reasons for coaching now are different, 7 enjoy the kind of kids you get out for swimming, the kid who swims seems different than the other athletes.' Mr Westervelt commented that he also likes to create line-ups for the meet because there is strategy involved. ’Swimming is the toughest, most demanding sport offered in this school. There’s perpetual motion and there's no free breathing' said Westervelt. 'May be that's why the whole boys swimming league is dieing out. It's a lot of hard work and no glory. Also there's not a lot of interest in the community.' The mam thing that would improve boys swimming in this school would be to have a jr. high team to prepare the swimmers for the Varsity team. Freshman Mike Kotmel told the Yearbook staff why he's a swimmer. ’Because that's the way it is, I love it. Swimming taught me what it meant to work and how to be a dedicated person.' Mike decided swimming would help him later in life and'after I win the Olympics I'll get to do some orange juice commercials.' Mike lives by his idol. The Girls' Swim team ended the season with a 12-2 record. Although the two losses were to our rival team Watkins Glen, we gave them a good run for their money when they swam against us at the O-M pool. Tracy Monks broke the school record in the 200 individual medley and the pool record in the 100 yard free. Another pool record was set by Cynthia Cratsley for the 100 yard breastroke One of the best races of the swim season was at the IAC Championships at EFA. Collins, Cratsley, Senka, and Monks came from behind to win the 200 yard medley relay beating Watkins Glen who was seeded first. Out of the ten events O-M placed first in four others besides the medley relay. Karen Kotmel placed first in the 100 yard free events. Cynthia Cratsley won first in the 100 yard breastroke, setting a new IAC record. 'of,, The team advanced to Section IV competition and did fairly well. O Collins, Cratsley, Kotmel, and Monks placed fifth in the 200 yard medley relay. Monks placed fifth in the 100 yard free, Cratsley placed fourth in the 100 yard breastroke, and Kotmel regained the school record for the 200 IM. This year's team was very close and spent a lot of happy moments together. GIRLS SWIM 37 Wrestling 'mat men go co-ed' 1985-86 wrestling season was marked by a number of firsts, which included Mr Blum and Mr Wall becoming the new coaches. Secondly, female wrestlers entered the picture. There was a great deal of controversy about the girl wrestler from Edison that Matt Romanki had to grapple. Matt said, 7 was nervous because if I somehow lost, 1 would have never been able to show my face again.' But when the final moment arrived, Matt proved to be victorious. 7 believe we are in an age where girls should be able to wrestle,' commented Matt. Above: Don Benjamin performs a fancy head move while the rest of the wrestling team watches with awe. Right: Eric and Chuck show a little brotherly love to each other by using the fireman's carry. 38 WRESTLING When asked why they wrestle, we given a lot of responses. Keith Hughey said, 'It’s great. It makes me feel good when people congratulate me on a win.’ 'My dad wrestled when he was in high school, so I decided to try,' said 9th grader Carl Guild. Chuck Arnold picked wrestling over any other sport because 'it's more physical'. Coach Wall feels that wrestling is the most demanding sport. He said it requires strength, speed, agility, knowledge of the many moves, and maintaining weight. He believes all of these qualities add up to an excellent wrestler. Below Wayne Stermer and Wayne Pelchar pose in a hold called the guillotine. The wizer, a hold that wrestlers use is being modeled by Greg Lisk and Mitch Parrott. Wendy Powers and Brenda Dense are spotting and keeping track of the plays during a JV game The Volleyball team will be missing Co-Captain Wendy Roblyer. Wendy has put in a lot of knee crushing hours on the court. Varsity: Team Manager C.Larison, T.Snow, S.Sayre, D.Slusser, W.Roblyer (Co-Captian), J Marshall, W.Powers, D.Gifford (Co-Cap-tain), B.Dense, M Letteer. B.Chapman, T.Fair, Coach Sharon Larison. The Girls Volleyball team had an 8-8 record. This record gives justice to the relatively young team, for they walked all over Watkins. W.G. had 10 seniors and S-VE had 7 seniors compared to Odessa's 3 seniors. Coach Sharon Larison decided to work her terrific team harder than ever. Everyday they ran 10 minutes, did at least 100 blocks, then did drills and scrimmages for the next 2 112 hours. All this hard work paid off for the four freshman, four juniors, and the three seniors. Captains Wendy Roblyer and Dulcie Gifford did their best to keep up the team's spirit and family atmosphere. But the team couldn't have had such a great season without Brenda Chapman (BC), Brenda Dense (Killer), Jamie Marshall, Wendy Powers (Wimpy), or Michelle Letter (Pee-Wee). Thanks to the rest of the team, Debbie Slusser, Tonya Snow, Tiffany Fair, and Stacey Sayre for making the season enjoyable for fans and players. Each year the cheerleaders compete at the Invitational in Dundee and the IAC Small School Championships. In October the O-M Cheerleaders were invited to the St Joseph's Hospital Benefit where the Dallas Cowboy's cheerleaders were featured. The major difference between cheerleading and any other sport is that the only way they are able to win is if there are no mistakes in competition. Our cheerleaders are out on the football field on cold fall nights and their spirit never lets down. During the long basketball season, they are there for the more than 20 games. They ceaselessly cheer on the JVs and the Varsity. It wouldn't be sports at O-M without our girls. Every morning about 750 people of varying ages and interests enter the doors of OMCS to work, teach or learn. The function of the school, obviously, is to teach us basic knowledge about different subjects. But we also learn out of the classroom, about human relationships. Our friends and peers can sometimes teach us very valuable lessons pertaining to other peoples values, beliefs, and lifestyles. Odessa-Montour radiates positive attitudes. When questioned about OMCS as a whole Mrs. Penny Titus answered 7 like it very much, the kids are enjoyable to work with, they have eager attitudes and there is a lot of enthusiasm. I've always found a lot of talent at this school because there is room for uniqueness.' The yearbook staff asked Mrs. Scott her opinion of teaching at this school. She replied 7 enjoy coaching and the whole attitude of both the sports and English departments.’ When asked how he liked his job, Mr. Evans laughed and said ’You shouldn't ask me at the end of the day.' Kellogg D.Kelly ' M Lanning P.LaRow R Lauper J Marshall JUNIORS 67 Facing Challenges by Jason Confer The different levels of high school are often characterized by varying degrees of difficulty. Undoubtedly, if you ask any student in high school today, they would say the junior year is the hardest. Juniors must overcome many hurdles throughout the year ranging from the PSAT in the beginning of the year, the SAT's in midyear, and, for most. Regents at the end of the year. This year the Class of '87 was introduced to many new changes in the school system. With the new dean of students running a smooth disciplinary system, along with additional hall monitors observing students' actions, the behavior of students has been greatly controlled. Disciplinary action has been a little rigid since the new take-over and juniors realized that Odessa has finally become academic institution. As |uniors, we also saw a change in the class government. This year's floatout did last year's but suffered a surprising upset to the sophomores. No one has had any complaints about our government this year because of outstanding leadership on the part of our president, David Sidle, who next year looks to be a strong candidate for Student Council president As we progressed throughout the year, we felt the weight of many decisions upon our shoulders with the thought of college, careers, and the future adding to our already overloaded minds. The ever present rivalry between BOCES students and students who spend the whole day at O-M was still hardy. Unification should be around the corner, to unite as one class instead of two separate classes. It's time to rid the Class of '87 of the stereotypes and become closer as a class. This, in turn, will increase the class spirit and participation it will also make for bigger and better parties. T.Overhiser R. Peet S. It's a way to expend your energy in a productive fashion. Honor Society, Student Council, Odessey of the Mind, and F.S.A are some activities that stimulate the growth of your mind. They challenge you academically but not necessarily in the classroom setting. While you may be a person that wants an activity just for fun, 0-M has that too. F.H.A, SADD, Ski Club, and Varisty O offer a chance to work with your hands and learn something while having a good time. Odessa has many activities for all of our varied interests. Let's remember that without our school activities our life in Schuyler county would be very dull indeed. Far upper left: Crystal Palmer. SADD's four goals are: help eliminate the drunk driver and save lives, alert high school students to the dangers of drinking and driving, conduct community alcohol awareness programs, and organize peer counseling programs to help students who may have concerns about alcohol. ODESSEY In preparing a team for Odessey of the Mind competitions, the coach will put team members through excerises which will enhance each individual's creativity. Through competition, students realize that their imagination should not be limited in probelm solving. Many times they will see solutions developed by opposing teams which will open their eyes to new possibilities. Participation in the OM program provides an avenue to open the door to the potential in each student. This in turn can build self-confidence and encourage student-initiated inquiry. 1« • Future Secretary Association is a group of students interested in learning about the responsibilities and duties of any secretarial job. Karate at O-M 104 KARATE DEMO On December 5, 1985, O-M was treated to a first class demonstration of karate martial arts skills, exercise, and philosophy. Me were impressed! Cynthia Cratsley used her unique talents and did the lay-outs and artwork thus producing the book's flashy, up-beat look. Michelle Wheaton was the woman in charge of production keeping track of deadlines, paperwork. details, and all that left brain stuff. These two coeditors were helped out by people who dropped in once in a while like: Laura Lynch, Michele Rogalin, Sharon Phillips, Jaime Marshall, Cheryl Bannister, Katie Murch, Becky Evans, Tammi Stillman. Mr Lemak photographed the group shots and most of the candids. The Staff hopes you enjoy this effort that we put forth into this edition. With the financial savings that accumulated by using the computer program, we were able to afford a color section without raising the price of the book. We, The Staff, think we did a great job and are sure that you'll agree . . . 108 Colophon Closing
