Mr. Fraboni takes time off from stalking naughty Jr. High students, and relaxes in his chair in the teachers lounge. Girls flock from all over to be near Troy Monks! Surrounding him are: Jamie Myers, Peggy Flatt, Sherry Dickens, and Kate Anagnost. TABLE OF CONTENTS 3 The 1985 Odessanean Proudly Presents This Yearbook To .. . Mrs. Edith Gaige Mrs. Gaige, thank you for all of your unflagging dedication to the student body of Odessa-Montour. We know you've had a tough job trying to teach us about French and Spanish language and culture, and we appreciate it very much. It's hard trying to bring another world to O-M and you've done a magnificent job over the years. We hope that you'll enjoy your retirement even though we think you are too young to retire. We'll be thinking about you in the Fall of 1985 when we come back to school and you'll be out on the farm in Cayutaville enjoying all of the beauty of Schuyler County. We hope that you'll also be planning trips to Europe, one of your favorite past times. So, the Staff and Student Body say, Thank You and enjoy your many long years to come. 4 DEDICATION TAMMY SUE WICKHAM Dec. 4, 1965—June 11, 1984 Our True Friend Has Left Us... Why? I can't answer that, no one can. Tammy was all heart. I remember her once saying, This isn't gonna stop me. I'm gonna keep going cause I wanna live. I want to be here forever. I looked at her, my eyes swollen with tears, saying to myself, You will live, always, because you've got a dream to share with the rest of us who take life for granted. When I look back on all the memories we shared, I realized what a gift she gave me. She taught me to love now, Don't wait until it's too late, Tell that person you care. I remember saying endlessly to her and myself, You'll make it, and don’t worry, I’ll be right here when you come back. Remember, hold on, don’t let go. You'll come out just fine, feeling like a champ. I think about the gift the doctors gave Tammy and thank them for making her able to share six more years of her life with us. I know Tammy loved sharing it with us, even if some of us didn't understand her delicate and very serious problem. Tammy said, I will live. And she does live, In my heart and in the hearts of others that she has touched on her short journey through life. by JoAnn Coates MEMORIAL 5 Since 1984 was an election year two Seniors got involved in the campaign. Meeting the American way of life and the school has been very interesting, although the two countries don’t seem so far from each other in culture. Boys from all over New York State spent a week learning about and creating their own model state government. Attending from O-M were some of the senior guys: Mike Baker, Glenn Bleiler, Greg Chamberlain, Andy Michel, Aaron Teeter, and Mike Rentschler. During this week of simulated government the Men from O-M were vital links in the functioning of this government. Mike Baker was superintendent of highways, Glenn Bleiler an assemblyman, Greg Chamberlain was chief of fire prevention, Andy Michel served on the Federalist platform committee, Aaron Teeter was a superintendent of schools, and Mike Rentschler was chairman of committee funds. Not all was work, in their spare time they played baseball, softball, frisbee, and just rested their weary bodies. by Mike Baker GIRLS STATE In the Summer of 1984, Sherry Dickens and Erin Dowd attended Girls State held at SUNY Albany. Like the Boys, Erin and Sherry learned about NYS Government, parliamentary procedure, and met important politicians in the State Capitol. For the first time, the Boys and Girls worked together. Our O-M'ers had the distinct honor of meeting Governor Mario Cuomo! Everybody not only had a good time but they learned a lot about government and about meeting new people. BOYS GIRLS STATE 9 The Prom A smile may cross your face as you reminisce about the 1984-85 Junior I Senior Prom. The Juniors and a few seniors spent several hours on Saturday, scurrying around to Stillman's and the paper store to create a Victorian atmosphere at the Montour House. By evening, the sounds of laughter and music from the band— DENAMO. Scanning the room, you would have noticed the elegantly dressed couples and singles—which seemed to bring stag back into existence. Those honored on the court were as follows: Junior Court Kate Anagnost, Donny Gunning, Peggy Flail, Troy Monks, Shawn Durfey, Mike Myers Senior Court Amy Hall, Greg Lychalk, Gina Scriven, Chubber House, Laura Vandervliet, Dave Marsh Following the crowning by Mrs. Titus, the crowning by Mrs. Titus, the couples danced to the 1984 theme song The Closer You Get . Everyone always finds humor in watching the girls in their gowns Fast dance. Peggy Flatt and Amy Hall had little trouble in their Yt length dresses. Guys like Troy Monks and Greg Chamberlain however, were extremely uncomfortable in their formal wear. Junior Queen Kathy Anagnost shares a dance with Senior King Greg Lychalk. Junior Court: 2nd Princess Shawn Durfey, 1st Princess Margaret Flatt, Queen Kathy Anagnost King Don Gunning, 1st Prince Troy Monks, 2nd Prince Mike Myers. 10 PROM Class of '84 Senior Court: Dave Marsh, Robert House, King Greg Lychalk Queen Amy Hall, Gina Striven. An event long awaited by the Class of '85. one that the Class of '88 was not looking forward to. It was ... Freshman Initiation. The OM cafeteria was quickly filling with Freshman guys who had newly acquired busts, it looked like an ad for Cross-Your-Heart Bras. Freshman girls were most often seen with totally gaudy and tacky clothing. Initiation was funny but very unoriginal. I think there needs to be more input from the Seniors, more imagination, said Senior Craig Smollen. Craig's victim was Mark Sipes who was dressed as a new wave flower child. Other good costumes were worn by Rosie Colunio and Shirley Menzi who, thanks to Erin Dowd and Liz Fowler, ended up as Kermit and Miss Piggy. Wendy Scott, initiated by Kathy Cutton, was a pack of Wrigley's Spearmint Flavored Gum. Kathy said that she got the idea from a college yearbook. Freshman Shelley Hunter enjoyed initiation, It was cool, some people really deserved it, like Amazon (Lisa Pylkas). Senior Nancy Sample wasn't too thrilled with Initiation, It was kinda boring, they don't let you do much anymore. Push pennies and say the pledge is about all you can do to them, I think it should be a whole day event like it used to be. Our school is too strict. Although there were some complaints the Class of '85 did enjoy getting their revenge on the lowly Class of '88. Gary Sawyer poses as the new Maidenform Man, you never know where he'll turn up. The Class of '86's hearts were crushed” when it was announced that the Freshmen won first place. The proud Juniors had previously won first place for the past two years. There was a high level of spirit between both classes. The candidates and their escorts: K. Anagost J. Confer, S. Dickens D. Sidle, Queen Erin Dowd Richard Slusser, P. Flatt E. Taber, B. Cleveland B. Erin was escorted by Richard Slusser and was accompanied by candidates as they rode around the field. The candidates were Kathy Anagnost, Sherry Dickens, Margaret Flatt, and Betsy Cleveland. They were escorted by fason Confer, David Sidle, Eric Taber, and Billy Hancock. Along with the coronation, we saw the class floats on parade. The freshman class walked away with First place with the theme Kick 'em back to Candor . Placing second was the Junior class with the theme Crush Candor . Following close behind in Third place was the sophomore class with Cook Candor . Our superb Marching Band did a fabulous halftime show with an O-M formation, and the playing to The Hill Street Blues . The show was a moment which all will remember. Below, Jason and Skip show off their footwear New fashions were introduced this year j Just about everyone owned $ stone-washed pin striped jeans. In warmer weather O-M'ers teamed them up with lace or mesh shirts and bright plastic flats or pumps. In colder months students were seen in vests that buttoned at the bottom with tan or black suede boots. Karen Kotmel and Rosie Colunio brightened the school with blinding fluorescent tops. New hair styles were seen this year like Mel Haight's classy bob along with new products like mouse and gel which Jason Confer used generously. Who could forget Jim (ZabaGrog) Ennis' dyed stripe down the middle of his hair? He looked twice as wild in his purple zebra pants that fit like a second skin. Concert tour shirts were seen with Rick Sprinfield, Sammy Hagar, John Waite Survivor who were all on tour. Many underclassmen became very fashion conscious wearing striped dress shirts with leather ties no doubt from Chess King. Yet, the traditional worn Levies and t-shirts were seen most of the time. Above right, Jamie and Mel wearing their favorite sweaters. Far right Carol poses in her oversized vest Renee in her John Waite T-shirt, and Liz hang out in the gym (right). Below, Terry puckers up to give Lisa a big kiss. To some people their locker is just a cubicle of space to hang their jacket, but to most, their locker is a home away from home That's why they go to such extremes decorating and furnishing them. A majority of people hang contact paper, photos of friends, or of their favorite singers or actors Keeping items like food, candy, and mirrors in them, along with an occasional tunebox. Dan Thorpe even has a clock in his Keeping your locker neatly organized is not easy to accomplish, but who really wants a clean locker anyway? It's a good thing our mothers can't nag us to straighten them up along with our rooms or we'd never have time for our homework! Face Painting is a lot of fun for all involved. The painter loves creating mini-paintings on someones cheek, and the paintee loves having it done Although few highschoolers get it done, it is very popular with elementary and junior high students. For only twenty-five cents you can get popular designs such as: 'ghostbusters'. Twisted Sister' or hearts with a girlfriends' or boyfriends' name in the center. For the 3rd consecutive year, the Indians have won the Christmas Tournament, they also clinched the small student division title for the 2nd year in a row. At one point during the season, the cagers were ranked 6th in the Star Gazette Basketball poll. The Indians were lead by Scott Gauvin's 20 points per game average, Scott was also named MVP at the annual Christmas Tournament, along with the nomination of Brad Clark to the All Tournament Team. The girls practices started out with running what seemed to be endless laps around the gym and sprints to prepare for another fine season. The girls started off their season with two wins over Corning East and Notre Dame to bring their winning streak to 41 until losing their first game to Class A Vestal when they were invited to the Delhi Christmas tournament in December. The girls had a 6-6 record with many more games ahead this season. The girls don't play the sisters of the poor, you know” and aren't afraid to take a challenge. The highlight of the season which turned their record around to a winning one was their upset over Dryden 50-45. There were also many good times that the girls will always remember. The 1984-1985 Varsity Cheerleaders did a fantastic job cheering on our sports teams. Football The O.M. football team finished the 84 season with a 7-2 record. Although every game is a big game, some standout through the season. One such game is the annual Bucket game against rival, Watkins Glen. Watkins came into the O.M. game with a crippling O.M. defense and a ball control offense. The came away with a 13-7 victory. The very next game the Indians won a hard fought game against T-burg 7-6. After losing to O.M., T-burg goes on to win the large school division. It was a fine year for the Odessa gridders leaving 13 seniors with great memories and marks all over the record books. Including: Coach Myers 40th win, a record 4 shutouts, Brad Clark's 1,319 rushing yards, winning the bucket two consecutive years and beating Watkins 3 consecutive times, and finishing 7th in the S-G Twin Teirs poll. BOYS SWIMMING 33 Boys Swimming Odessa's Mermen seem to be building a winning tradition. After a year in which six of ten school records were broken, including two league standards. Odessa was the highest placing at sectionals in school history, our swimmer's chances to improve on last year's 25 and 2 record seems almost inevitable. Backed by Thompson, Brown, Renschler, and Kotmel. Odessa's captains of Rhodes, Bleiler, Chamberlain and Michel hope to lead the team to an unprecedented IAC championship and Class C sectional titles. Here, Mike Kotmel tries to capture Rick Carey's winning backstroke style, as seen in the '84 Olympics. This years swim team surprised a lot of the girls on the team. Coming from an 11-1 record last year, the girls weren't confident enough that they once again could take the title, but after a certain momentum” speech, everything seemed to fall into place as it did last year. The bulk of the credit should go to our coach, Scott Westervelt, from chewing on his whistle to licking his lollipop's, he led us to a 9-3 season. We appreciated his dedication and understanding that a coach must have if he coaches a girls team. This season the girls placed 2nd in IAC Relays, 3rd place in Championships, and they placed 10th in Sectionals out of 16 schools. This years climax was when O.M.'s 400 Freestyle relay, made up of Kathy Collins, Karen Kotmel, Liz Fowler, and Tracy Monks reached their goal by getting 3:59.72, and by reaching such a goal they continued onward to state qualifying meet. O.M. didn't make it to States, but received the honor just to participate in such an event, that relay also broke an old Lansing pool record from 1978. There are always going to be memories on a team, and some that will stand out the most in each of the girls minds are; I.A.C. Busters, Toga Day, Liz's Fall at Dry den, Pizza Hut, removing Lansing’s water that once and only once entered O.M.'s pool, and lastly those speeches in the lounge, that often left a few tears. I really enjoyed being this year's captain with Tracy and Karen and I would like to thank-you all for putting up with me and my speeches, and to Coach Westervelt and the TEAM. Spike At 3:15 some of the girls of our school would don their sneakers, shorts, t-shirt, and of course, knee pads to endure another of Coach Larison’s volleyball practices. Usually the practices would start out rather mildly (like running for 10 minutes, which everyone loved). The year was a very fun season for both teams, seeing that they got along very well. At one point in the season, Lisa Brown's parents donated two sheet pizzas for a pizza pig-out party on the bus to Tioga. One of Pam Strong's most memorable experiences on the team was How Bridgette and I thumb wrestled on the bench at Watkins. Bridgette added, and I won every time. But of course the season wasn't all fun and games. Nancy Chapman made the All-Star Volleyball Team. On October 17th, the O-M Volleyball Team put up a great fight against Edison at home. Edison was the dominant team in the league and our girls gave Edison the closest game of their season. Another highlight of the season was the match against the Candor Indians. Wendy Roblyer said, We gave them a run for their money!!'' “The team pulled together, added Stacey Sayre. Nancy Chapman recalled that, the best time on the team was when I served the MOST serving points against Candor. A quote that all the players will remember is, Lisa!! Watch out for that chair. This is one of Brenda Dense's famous spikes as O-M beat Tioga on Halloween Night! JV: Jackie Rosbaugh. At the present, the team is 10-1 with 3 matches to go. The team also placed 3rd at the Watkins Glen Invitational and is expected to place well in the I AC League Tourney, Class D Tourney and the Section 4 Finals. This year the 0-M matmen are lead by a tough bunch of Seniors. Paul Wheeler 98 (19-4), Troy Monks 105 (21-0), Tom Zimmer 132 (17-4), Don Gunning 138 (21-0-1), and Keith Stermer 145 (14-3). Captains Cunning and Monks both plan to be contenders in the State Finals this year. Behind the Seniors we have several underclassmen who should uphold the winning 0-M tradition. Mitch (8-8) and Mark Parrot (7-1) both 91 lb. 7th graders and big brother Mike 155 (4-4) will add a lot to our team in years to come. Keith Hughey 118 (20-3) and fim Halbert (5-2) both look tough this year and should be even better as Seniors next year. Other 0-M powerhouses include Dave Lynch 167 (9-5), Chuck Adams 112 (5-5), Dave Sidle, and Wayne Stermer 126 (5-11). Left: Dave Wolfe shows Tom Zimmer what the world looks like up-side-down. ART CLUB 89 This Year's Art Club was not only active in the school, but in the community as well. They painted faces over the summer at the Italian Festival in Watkins Glen. At the start of the school year they did the same at the Montour Falls Cornucopia. And of course painted everything from jack-o-lanterns to Christmas trees to valentines throughout the year in the O-M student lounge. The Art Club put on the first annual Halloween 'Costume Contest. The majority of students dressed up, some costumes were outstanding. Heather Gordon was a lop rabbit, Tina Searles donned herself in a frog outfit, which Mr. Banfi found hilarious. Lisa Bruno and Charlene Sayre were totally unrecognizable in their mummy bandages. 13 prizes were given out to those with the best costumes. The Christmas tree that stands each year in the rotunda was decorated with Origami cranes. Origami is the art of paper folding, which members of the art club learned, with the help of Seiko Noguchi, our Japanese exchange student. October '84 the Art Club held a Halloween Costume Contest, here’s C. Sayre, C. Cratsley, B. Hancock, and Amy Smith. Our main goals are to increase student awareness of the drinking and driving problem. We hope that our SADD chapter will save one of our lives. FHA SADD 95 Olympics of the Mind Olympics of the Mind is a world-wide organization whose aim is to develop creative thinking and innovative problem solving. The teams spend the winter months working on solutions for their problem-projects, and in the spring, they meet with other teams from central New York schools in a problem-solving competition. Regional winners go on to state competition and eventually to the world finals. Olympics of the Mind team members must be ingenius, creative, quick-thinking, and work cooperatively. Mr. Gerard Crosley Above: Jerry in his classroom days teaching Earth Science around 1978. Right: A recent photo of Jerry when he was a board member. Left: Everybody got their mug shot taken in the Auditorium every fall. Below: Jerry is seen here with 5th Grader David Dougherty in Toronto, Canada. They were both on a tour to see Pope John-Paul 11. This is the last photograph of our friend. In January 1985 a dear friend of the Odessa-Montour School left us. We were saddened to witness the passing of Mr. Gerard Jerry Crosley. Over the years, Jerry was everything at O-M. Despite the fact that he had complications from childhood diabetes all of his life, he showed more enthusiasm, dedication, concern, and energy than most of us. Nothing got in the way of his service to O-M. While a teacher, Jerry taught Earth Science, Chemistry, and Physics. He was a track and JV football coach and a tireless Senior Class advisor. Where he got all that energy, optimism, and positive thinking we'll never know. Upon retiring from teaching on a disability, Jerry could not sit at home. He ran for the O-M Board of Education where he represented the public with a keen and probing mind. Not much got past him. In the Fall of 1984, Jerry had a leg amputated and he still got to the meetings. Jerry was always full steam ahead. Jerry, we miss you dearly, but you're still with us. You have left more than we have given you. Thank You! MEMORIAL 107 Mr. Jack Davis Congratulations of Mr. Jack Davis. We hope you enjoy your deserved retirement. We're sure that you'll be spending a lot of time on Seneca Lake trying to out smart the lake trout. We, and the whole community, appreciate your sincerity, dedication, attention to detail, and respect for the O-M student body. We know that your dedication in the teaching of Driver Education has made our highways safer. Though not many students are aware of the job of an Athletic Director, we'd like to thank you for organizing the sports program. That's a tough job with all of the new teams and the over loaded gym schedules. So, Thank You for many years of your fine teaching and sports organizing. We'll miss you very much. Please come back for a game or meet sometime. Mr. Howard Searles You finally made it to retirement, Mr. Howard Searles. We'll miss your quiet patience way down in the other end of the school. You've been a dedicated Industrial Arts teacher. The district will be hard pressed to find a man of your wood working skill. We hope you'll enjoy yourself and continue to excell in your cabinet making. 108 RETIREMENTS
