ODESSANEAN 1984 “Back Again in '84 The 1984 Odessanean Proudly Presents This Yearbook to . . . Coach Scott Westervelt Here's Mr Westervelt, the way he REALLY is. What coach demands the most of O-Mers whether it's in the gym, baseball field, or in the swimming pool? You guessed it, it's COACH SCOTT WESTERVELT!! He's the man that mercilessly drills his teams, the teams that show great sportsmanship and great records. Mr Westervelt coached Girls' Swimming for the first time this Fall, bringing the team alive for one of the best seasons ever. In the Winter, he coaches Boys Swimming and heads the team to outstanding victories year after year. Spring, it's Coach's time to gather the raw baseball talent of O-M and mold it into another championship team. How can you argue with success? From 8:30 to 3:15 Mr. Westervelt can be found in the gym, where the classes are fun AND educational. He's got an imaginative and crazy sense of humor that we'll never forget Congratulations, Mr. Westervelt, this is long overdue. DEDICATION 3 IN MEMORY OF . . . ROB WANDRICKE The Two Mysteries We know not what it is, dear, this sleep so deep and still; The folded hands, the awful calm, the cheeks so pale chill; The lids that will not lift again, though we may call and call; The strange white solitude of peace that settles over all. We know not what it means, dear, this desolate heart pain; This dread to take our daily way, and walk in it again; We know not to what other sphere the loved who leave us go; Nor why we're left to wonder still, nor why we do not know. But this we know: Our loved and dead, if they should come this day— Should come and ask us, What is Life? Not one of us could say; Life is a mystery, as deep as ever death could be; Yet, O, how dear it is to us, this life we live and see! The child who enters life comes not with knowledge or intent; So those who enter death must go as little children sent; Nothing is known but I believe that God is overhead; And life is to the living, as death is to the dead 4 IN MEMORY OF . INITIATION After four long years of long waiting, the Class of 1984 finally got their revenge! This year's seniors were able to initiate their favorite freshmen, IF anyone has a favorite freshman. The so-called freshmen boys were especially beautiful in their evening wear, and even a wedding dress. The lowly freshmen were really low when they were pushing pennies on the cafeteria floor. Shane B. was the KNOCKOUT of the evening with a smashingly slinky dress with those exotic stocking. Kirt Menzi and Stacey Baby Bennett Shane B and Melanie H. show off LEGS!! The season was highlighted by two exciting victories over valley rivals, Watkins Glen. In the first game, a 9-6 thriller, Watkins disputed the last play of the game which left some doubt in Schuyler County fans, that MAYBE O-M did not deserve the bucket. In the rematch, the O-M Indians left no doubt, winning 14-8 rather easily. O-M was lead by a team defense that allowed the fewest points in the entire Twin Tiers. Jon Castor was a definite standout, rushing for 1,081 yards and 9 TD's. O-M can once again be proud of their Football Team. With a good crop of Juniors on the way, '84 looks even better by Mike Myers. FOOTBALL 37 HOMECOMING 1983 October 28th was a victorious night for the O-M Indians. Our Varsity Football Team defeated the Groton Indians by a score of 34-2. Festivities at half-time included the Homecoming Parade where the Sophomore float was named 1st Place for their impressive theme, Au Groton Potatoes. The O-M Marching Band under the new direction Mr. Shewan entertained the crowd while playing and marching to NEW YORK, NEW YORK. Finally, there was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Miss Gina Scriven. The Queen and Her Court: Chris Stusser Dick Fish. HOMECOMING '83 39 GIRLS SWIM The OMCS Swim Team started their winning season off great with an unexpected victory at the IAC Relays. After many losing years this year's dedicated, hard working team under the new excellent direction of Coach Scott Westervelt now knows the thrill of winning. The climax of the season was the win over Lansing who until then had been undefeated for three years, and now must share the title IAC Co-Champions with O-M. Many celebrations were held afterward in the pool including eating and throwing a three layer cake. A ritual was started when some swimmers shampooed their hair and feet in the pool. Out of six teams, O-M placed third in the IAC Championships and 7th out of 15 in the Sec IV Finals. Some things that the team will remember about the season, Freddy Fish, Flip Flop, Peter Gabriels song I Go Swimming, our new suits, the long bus ride home from Sectionals, (in which certain people had to sleep next to the heater), and our Shove It In contest with Oreos. But most of all, each others' dedication. The first week of school started off with hard work, strict discipline, and demands for musicianship. Mr. Shewan got the Marching Band organized again and more than one person had to suffer cold fingers and lips out on the Football field during 5th Period. The Pep Band did a fine job at home Football games and at Basketball games. It was a great year for the O-M Band and next year will surely not disappoint. O-M's Senior High Chorus also enjoyed sharing their music with the Halls Home, Bethany Center. Willard State Hospital, and BC Cate School. This year the Student Council helped out on Parents' Night, put on the annual spaghetti dinner, a dress up, and a movie to go with it. Everybody's favorite, the multimedia rock show was again sponsored by the Council. This year's Student Council carried on their fine tradition of serving the student body. The Honor Society is a service organization dedicated to help out O-M High School. This year the Honor Society put on their annual dance, reactivated the Student Recognition project, and made O-M a more academically serious place. The members also took a field trip to Cornell University where they were told about possible areas of college study. One of the highlights of the year was Glenn Bleiier attending a regional conference on the new State Regents proposals. Glenn and the Honor Society made a presentation for the public to make them more aware of the proposals and their costs. Good Work, as usual. The members of this club are under the advisorship of Coach Roger Myers. The Varsity O really grew this year with one of the largest memberships ever. The members worked hard to get credits to get their school jacket with the O-M Indian and the Maroon White. VISIONS, OMCS' literary magazine is a good way to express feelings and emotions through creative writing and drawings. VISIONS is full of touching, sad, and joyous poems, humorous stories, and simple eccentric illustrations. This year the literary staff put out a single volume of work from grades 7 through 12. It was one of the biggest ever. For a small fee we saw how poetic and creative our classmates really are. 62 LITERARY MAGAZINE Future Secretaries Club (Left to Right) Denise Parrott, Carolyn Reid, Colleen Donnelly, Jennifer Titus, Karen Spaulding, Lisa Doane, Stacey Smith, Michelle Stayer, Mrs. J. Boys from all over New York State formed a model government and learned the inner workings of our state. The summer week of work and fun was held at Siena College near Albany. Attending from O-M were some of our favorite Seniors: Paul Gifford, Doug Zane Reynolds, RJ Chaz Roberts, Mark Dogger” Lynch, Mike Drake, Jim Jimmy” Anagnost. In the simulated state government, we heard that Paul was a District Attorney, Doug was an Assemblyman, RJ was a Commissioner of Public Works, Mark was a Commissioner of Parks, Mike was Commissioner of Postal Services, and Jim was a Superintendent of Highways. For fun the boys lifted weights, played basketball and softball. 64 BOYS STATE Girls State This year O-M had the pleasure of sending Cori Crane and Missy Lanning to Girls State. Girls State is a one week long summer project where outstanding high school girls learn about the working of the New York State government. Our girls went to Cazenovia College at Cazenovia, New York and created a mock New York State government. Cori and Missy ended up as State Assemblymen! Political parties were set up at all different levels. It was not all work. Cori and Missy got involved in water fights and socialized with girls from all over New York State. I found that I was luckily placed at OMCS. I will be leaving behind me the greatest group of people I have known. Maybe some day I will be back to visit my second home. Thanks to all the students and faculty for making my year so prosperous. Craig Christie Foreign Exchange It didn't take anyone here at O-M very long to become acquainted with our exchange student from Melbourne, Australia, Craig Christie. (Alias Kanga ). Craig, with his winning personality and unique sense of humor quickly fit right in. Craig participated and was a great asset to the boys swim team, swam with the Glen Gators and was manager of our girls swim team. Craig also participated in the Jr-Sr play, entitled, Canterville Ghosts . Craig filled each day with great fun and laughs, but more importantly he was always there as a bloody good friend, easy to talk to and ready to help. Craig will be greatly missed when he goes back home to Australia. But he will be leaving his friends at O-M with many fond memories that will stay with all of us, forever. 70 FOREIGN STUDENT UNDERCLASSMEN THE JUNIORS CLASS OF 1985 Class Officers: Betsy Cleveland. We had a small, but very hard working and dependable crew. The main force behind this year's Odessanean were Co-Editors Susan Frycek and Marcee Dickens. Under their direction was a great staff to include Michelle Wheaton, Michele Rogalin, Cynthia Cratsley, and Gina Scriven. Mr. Lemak took the candid, sports, and group pictures, and, of course, threw in his two cents once in a while. Jennifer Titus did a lot of impeccable typing, especially in the Senior activity listings. Stacy Sipes did a lot of work early on when she organized the lay out of the book. 8th Graders Kim Baily, Brenda Smith, and Lori Davenport did a lot of important and boring work in the undergraduate pages. This 1984 Staff hopes that you will enjoy this book as much as we had putting it together. YF.ARBOOK STAFF 107 In Tribute To . . . Mrs. Mabel Wood In June of 1983, Mrs. Mabel Wood retired from the O-M District as the High School Secretary. Mrs. Wood was famous for many years because of her pleasant personality, her kindness to everyone, and her quiet efficiency. Mrs. Wood is already missed at O-M and we have been honored by her presence in the past years. We hope, Mrs. Wood, that you are enjoying your retirement that you more than deserve. 108 MRS. WOOD H I
