1982 Odessanean Odessa-Montour Central School College Avenue Odessa, New York 14869 (607) 594-3343 Changes at OMCS The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. That was the statement made by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his inaugural address on March 4. 1933 as he expressed his confidence that the nation could solve its problems of the Great Depression. When Roosevelt became President business was at a standstill and a feeling of panic gripped the nation. Most Americans enjoyed prosperity during the 1920’s until the stock market crash in October 1929. Banks, small businesses, and factories closed as the depression grew worse in the early I930's. Workers lost their homes and farmers lost their farms because they failed to meet mortgage payments. An estimated 12 to 15 million Americans—I out of 4 workers—had no jobs. The New Deal was President Roosevelt’s program to pull the country out of the depression. The New Deal did not end the depression but it did relieve much of the economic hardship and gave Americans faith in the democratic system at a time when other nations hit by the depression turned to dictators. Roosevelt first used the term new deal” when he accepted the Democratic presidential nomination in 1932. I pledge you. I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.” he said. One of the administrations under Roosevelt's New Deal gave people construction jobs. This group of workers built our school in 1939. Now. forty-three years later, as we celebrate FDR’s 100th birthday, we also celebrate the many renovations in our school. Through all the dirt and dust of the construction the American flag stands strong. 2—OPENING Al the left a welder puts some finishing touches on a staircase near the cafeteria loading dock. During the Summer of '81 the foundation was put in for the new boiler building as shown below. And it hasn’t stopped yet. As we sat in the boiling hot gym sweating out our Regent exams the old roof began to come off overhead. One of the biggest conversation topics since last year has been the construction. To pick a theme for this yearbook was easy, thanks to the voters who voted yes for the renovations ami to the grants received by the school for much needed repairs. Throughout this book you will see pictures of the school as it progresses through its metamorphosis. On each division page you will see how the construction has af fected the students, faculty, sport teams, and student activities. For the students who hadn’t seen the school over the Summer, they were in for a shock on their first day back to begin the 1981-82 academic year First day remarks about the construction varied from. Hey. where'd that staircase go? to Look at these new ramps. I feel like I’m in a horse corral! Others noticed the fresh paint job while others thought the smell was sickening. Lowered ceilings, smoke alarms, an ele valor, renovated bathrooms, anti a totally new look for the gym were |u$t a few more noticeable differences. As October, cold weather, and fidgety kids rolled around, the newness began to wear off and boredom set in. Now conversations consisted of. Are you kidding, no gym class for ten weeks?! and BRRR!! If you were a polar bear you’d fit right in!” During this time the Rubick’s Cube kept most people quiet, though. After Christmas vacation, dodging construction workers and blocking out clanks and bangs became a routine part of everyone’s schedule. Just remember, things always get worse before they get better. Be patient and after the renovations are completed, you’ll prob ably miss the mass confusion. Shown at the right are the new windows that were installed over the Summer of ’81. Not only is the construction crew busy during the day. our custodial staff has spent endless hours making our school a better place. Above is Mr. Skeet Seymour. Mr. Bob Mathers, and Mr. Bob VanGalder. Mr. Bob Mathers. Director of school facilities. and his custodians worked long hard hours over Labor Day weekend to get school ready for its grand opening on Sep t ember 9. 1981 4—OPENING The sides of the boiler building went up fast as the construction crew spent end less hours on scaffolds as shown at the left. Shown above is the gymnasium before the new bleachers were installed. At the right is the frame for the founda non of the boiler building before the cement has been poured. OPENING —5 CONFUSION, CHAOS . . . 6—STUDENT LIFE STUDENT LIFE Junior- Senior Prom Keep on Loving You This year's prom was a time for change. When the plans were being formulated, the question of a combined Junior-Senior Prom arose. After many meetings between the Junior and Senior committees, agreements were finally reached. It was decided that in order to make everyone happy, there would be a Junior King. Queen and court and a Senior King. Queen and court. The Junior King and Queen. Brian Bleiler and Dena Biddle, and the court. Tammy Chapman, Kathy Riley. Glenda Stermer, and Marcy Thurman, were crowned by the previous year's King and Queen, Annette Notar and B.J. Baker. Later in the same evening the Senior Queen. King and court were crowned by Dena Biddle and Brian Bleiler. The band. Variations, which had been chosen, canceled two days before the Prom. A new band. Times Square, was hired, but it cost an extra XX) dollars. The decorations were exceptionally well done. There were fresh wild flowers as centerpieces with candles at each table. Overall the prom went off as a big success. Pictured at top Junior Queen and King with dales. Dena Biddle and Sam Carrigan. lou Barrigar and Brian Bleiler. Not long after the festivities of Halloween ended, the Annual Freshman Initiation Dance was held in our semi-remodeled cafeteria. The timid Freshmen arrived at the dance on Nov. 6. The superior Seniors harrassed their slaves into the Senior High. Swimming contests, penny pushing, foot kissing and the sounds of undying devotion in the lowly Freshmen voices as they recited the pledge were all part of the activities. The initiation was rounded off with a grand finale of We Love You Seniors” by the I’m lower than a snake's belly Freshmen. Downhill Thrills As soon as school opens, the skiers begin looking forward to a huge snowfall to start their season. The excitement of a blizzard brings tears of joy to their eyes. The cold nights, endless chairlift lines, and ACHING muscles are all forgotten. The thrill and excitement of skiing down a mountain is more than words can say. The skiiers usually top off the night by gathering around a warm fire and chatting about their adventures that night. The next mountain the skiiers attempted to master was Whiteface. This was the same mountain that the 1980 Winter Olympics were held on. They worked hard selling T-shirts and Christmas ornaments to raise money for their trip to Lake Placid. Andy Parker as Sheridian Whiteside and Al Locke and Wendy Shutter as the Stanleys lead us through a variety of adventures and sub plots around the major story line. Whiteside's secretary, Maggie Cutler (played by Carla Crowly. Karen Sidle) falls in love with the town’s newspaper man, Bert Jefferson (Brian Blieler). The play began the new 1982 year with a rough starti the director became ill. bad weather tampered practices, and the schedule conflicted with boys girls basketball, wrestling, and ski club. OM's eighteen cheerleaders really had something to cheer for as the football team took 2nd place in our Division. Through rain, cold, and a very little bit of snow, they were there yelling their hearts out. This year's squad has many new girls who have improved greatly since tryouts last Spring. Most of the girls participated in Elmira College's cheerleading camp this past summer and many practices following camp have added to this obvious improvement. CHEERLEADERS—37 Girls Swimming O-Mermaids A record of 2-8 doesn't sound very impressive. but to the 1981 Swim Team the thrill of victory is something new. Next year’s team should be in good shape for the new season because they will only lose two Seniors. Tammi Drake, and Hisami Futakuchi. The highlight of the season was the one point win over Edison. The winner was de cided in the final event of the meet. Freshman. Liz Fowler, set a new school record in the 100 Breastroke. Laurie Nichols set a new IAC record in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:09 in the championship meet. OM took 5th place overall in that meet. Other outstanding swimmers for this year were J. Timms, and C. Clemons who paired with Nichols, and Fowler for the 100 Medley Relay who rarely lost. Co-captains Jeanne Timms and Cathy Clemons pose with Coach Blunt. At far right. The team will be losing 3 Seniors at the end of the year, but next year should be a great season. J.V.—There is a great deal of talent on the JV team, but it needs to be developed a bit more. With the loss of many of last year’s players to the varsity, it seems to be a year of rebuilding. Best of luck next season. lop pic. left 10 right: C. Mathers. H. Futacukti. t. Grover. M. Letteer. B. This year's Odessa-Montour Wrestlers are in a tremendous winning season. Almost every member has a win record and are contenders in every tournament. Mr Anderson has put a lot of energy into this team and last year's record of 10-5 tied the school record for wrestling scores. The team this year plans to exceed that score. The Seniors on the team are all great men. Jim Hunter 6 Ray Cilley carried undefeated as of the end of January as this is being written. John and David Rodabaugh are also two strong powerhouses. Terry Vallely charges on the mats with a quickness and agility that is a super asset. Mike Tharp in a few months of his 1st season has learned things that has taken most of the other members years to comprehend. Don’t believe that the exciting seniors are going to end our team! We have a strong JV and an impressive Jr. High team to follow the winning O-M Varsity Wrestlers. (1-22-82) Upper Right: Varsity—Alan Searles. Ron Seiver. Don Gunning. Ray Cilley. Rusty Seiver. WRESTLING—45 AGGRAVATION, DISTRACTION . . . ACADEMICS Dedication The Class of 1982 dedicates its yearbook with love and respect to Mr. David Taylor. During his five years at OMCS. Mr. Taylor has become very popular with the students. His first year here, he had to face us as mouthy 8th graders who were willing to go to extremes to see what we could get away with. When we met up with him three years later as Chemistry students we were too busy trying to keep up with this fast talker so there wasn’t much time to cause trouble. This year, as Seniors, it’s Physics. When asked why the 1982 Odessanean should be given to Mr. Taylor, the majority of the students came up with the same reasons. Because of his willingness to work with the students he is great. He will always take time to answer a question that he has already told us more than once. That is why he should be the teacher of the year.” Another student replied. Mr. Taylor gets along well with students. He prepares them with a great deal of enthusiasm and he cares for the welfare of the students. He is very dedicated. For example, every chance he gets he is in his room ready to help his students.” Any time you need help or just want to talk, stop in room 101 and you’ll be greeted with a smile. Whether he's filling the shoes of a teacher or a friend. Mr. Taylor is one super guy! DEDICATION—47 A Day at BOCES After spending a day at BOCES. our conception of what goes on there changed drastically. We were confronted with good-natured teachers who were willing to help us as we took pictures. At Boces, a person is able to learn while gaining first hand experience on machines or working with people. Upon completion of BOCES. many of the students will be able to start work in the real world without attending a college. Areas such as Auto Mechanics, Machine Shop, Agriculture, Cosmetology. and Welding are a few of the many different trades taught at BOCES. Here you learn by doing instead of reading it all out of a book. This hands-on” experience gives the BOCES graduate a better chance at getting a job in their trade than the average graduate. I came here from Germany to spend a year in America to learn English (American style) and the Americans. The best way to do that is by going to school. So. I came here to OMCS. I was very pleased to see how organized the school is. I am grateful to see how friendly the teachers and students are. Especially the teachers did their best to make the classes understandable for me. I was especially impressed by the great community spirit of all member of the school. I hope it will stay that way forever!!!! Katnn Adler It seemed that I had |u$t arrived in the USA when the time came for me to leave. All you at O-M made my year in the USA what it was—Absolute ly Fantastic!! I met hundreds of great people and made hundreds of great friends whom I will never forget. I joined in lots of activities and had many rewarding experiences. You guys almost made me American. You may not believe it. but I left for home with an American accent!!
