HOOVER, son of Judson R. and Arlene Wood Hoover was born at Elmira, New York, February 12, 1936. As an infant he was baptized and became a member of North Presbyterian Church of Elmira, New York. A graduate of George Washington School in that city on 23 June 1950, Gordon began attendance at Odessa Central High School, after the family moved to its present home on the Watkins Road at Millport, New York in June of that year. Upon his graduation from high school where he was prominent in athletics (baseball, basketball, and football) he became for somewhat more that a year an employee at the Horse-heads plant of the Westinghouse company. In August 1955 Gordon enlisted in the United State Marine Corps and graduated from “boot” training at Parris Island, South Carolina 18 October 1955. Attached to the Sixth Fleet he made several Mediterranean cruises, landing with the Corps at Beirut, in the late 50’s when the situation in the middle East threatened to explode. From Camp LeJeune where he had been stationed, with his wife, Ruth Marie Gardner, former Montour Falls girl, a son, Judson Frederick known as “Ricky” born January 15, 1958; and a second son, Gordon Wood Hoover, Jr. known as “Sarge” and born at Schuyler Hospital, Montour Falls, New York July 7, 1959, Gordon moved to the military base at San Diego, California, by which time he had been promoted to sergeant. August 1961 found Sgt. Hoover in Okinawa and later in Laos and Thailand from which duty he returned to San Diego in January 1963. Upon his return he was transferred to Barstow, California to the Marine Supply Depot where he remained until September 1964 when he was assigned to drill instructor school at San Diego. While in this school he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. 12 February 1967 found Gordon on his 31st birthday outbound for Viet-Nam where he met his death near Hue. Viet Nam 31 January 1968. By that time he had been promoted to Gunnery Sgt. In the service ot the United States Marine Corp, GY SGT Gordon W. Hoover had received three good conduct medals together with letters of commendation from his superior officers. Steeped in the tradition ot that t orps GY SGT Gordon W. Hoover made the supreme sacrifice exemplifying thereby its motto, “Semper Fidelis”. 7)tdicaXioti Several years ago Mr. Eugene Sensei was a member of the OMCS’s graduating class. This year he will view the graduation as a principal of his Alma Mater. In the years since his return to Odessa, Mr. Sensei has dedicated himself totally to the betterment of our school. In view of this fact, we dedi- cate to you, Mr. Sensei, our 1968 ODESSANEAN. The phones are ringing, students are pleading for passes, the teachers have lost books. These problems are handled daily by four ladies, our secretaries-the backbone of OMCS. Mrs. States: Pro at this type of work. Mrs. Wood: Always willing to help. Mrs. Lewis: Holds the school up with her guidance. Mrs. Letteer: Working forever. 'QowL oh EdmUoft TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1968 On behalf of the Board of Education, 1 can say they are truthfully pleased that they have been able to be at least a small part in helping to shape your education through high school. We feel sure that when you go out in the world, the 1968 Class as a whole will accomplish things that their high school alma mater, OMCS, will be proud of. You are graduating from one of the best high schools in New York State; and you need never be ashamed to proclaim this truth. What you do with your future is pretty much up to you and only you. You now have the basic training to go on to great accomplishments in this world of opportunity. You have had the benefit of being born in the greatest nation on the face of the earth; but YOU must furnish the get up and go to take advantage of the world of opportunities that surround you. As the future beckons, you have available the knowledges of today and of the past to guide you as you make your way forward. We trust that you will make the best use of all the many advantages you have to make use of. Howard A. Hanlon, President On Behalf of Board of Education Mr. Henrey Heslop, Mr. Howard Hanlon 8 Sitting: Mrs. Lou Sand, Mr. Howard Halon, Pres.; Mr. Delman Blieler, V.-P. Standing: Mr. Earl Goodrich, Mr. John Barton, Mr. George Hoffman, Dr. James Norton. MR. HENRY HESLOP Supervising Principal MR. CURTIS STEPHEN Elementary School Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1968 It is a welcome privilege and a very pleasure for me to extend my personal congratulations to the graduating class of 1968. I appreciate having the opportunity of doing so in your year-book, a publication I trust you will keep and refer to often in the years ahead. I particularly invite you to read—and from time to time to re-read— the following quotation from Robert L. Stevenson: “The problem of education is two-fold:—first to know and then to utter. Everyone who lives any semblance of an inner life thinks more nobly and profoundly than he speaks.” As you continue your pursuit of knowledge throughout life, consider the importance of further developing your ability to speak, to read, and to write. In this era of mass media-of the press, the radio, television, Telstar, and ever new methods of communication—success is for those who express themselves well. MR. EUGENE SENSEL Secondary School Principal Sincerely, Henry B. Heslop Mrs. Josephine Wilson, Dept. Our math department works hard to develop in its students the ability to think and reason. Learn. 6ku oh 1969 The Junior Class entered high school with four years of fun and hard work ahead. The class of 1969 entered as little Freshmen. Seniors were trouble! High hopes and excitement lay ahead. The Freshmen were led by Charlie Barton, Lynn Harris, Mark Sand, and Ed Chapman. The year went by real fast and our first year was over with only three more to go! The fall of ’66 rolled around and now all Sophomores learned what work is. This was true when the Christmas cards were to be sold. Everywhere a Silly Sophomore could be seen and heard saying “Would you like to buy some cards for the class of 1969?” The Silly Sophomores put their confidence in Mark Sand, Jack Darling, Rosa Fudala, and Sandy Rappleye. The class also kept busy with dances. BIOLOGY was a cry heard from many. Everyone was glad when it was over. This was also the first year of Regents tor many. The Sophomores were found praying like never before! June was here and only two more years to go. The Jolly Juniors! Upperclassmen at last! We got our rings. The class elected Darrell Welty, Joan Bennett, Charlie Barton, and Gary Stevens. The class got into full swing with candy sales. Boy, what salesmen! This year the class sponsors a play, with actors and actresses coming forth. Before you know it-a Prom. This year may be fun but work has gone along with it. 1 hus with the third year coming to an end, only one more year awaits. Next year. Mighty Seniors. The leaders of our school. Time has flown by and soon all will be on their way. Whatever lay ahead-work fun and getting into college to all GOOD LUCK. 43 Row 1: L. Tompkins, C. lorio, D. Stone. Row 2: Y. Robinson, B. Rice. We will need many more such successes if we are to go to Washington in 1971. Subjects are a little more difficult this year than in the past but the Frosh are eager. We have regents to look forward to next year. V. Romano, Treasurer; F. Williams, Secretary; C. Craver, Vice-President; B. Messersmith, President. At Table: S. Gould, B. Peterson, B. Messersmith,C. The team proudly ended their victorious season with a 21-1 record. The team remained undefeated for 13 games until they met an unfortunate fate at Ovid. That one point loss however, stimulated the Indians into going all the way to gain their title. Through an all out team effort and sportsmanship, Odessa-Montour did just that. Mick Carrigan, Tom Carson and Jim Leonard led the team scoring with efficient backing from Gary Olin, Steve Kenyon, Dick Price and Laurie Smith. In the Lakes Region League, Odessa shared the title with her rival Ovid, who ended the competition with an 11-1 record. It was an outstanding season for the Indians. He learns that he who loses his temper usually loses out. |He learns that all men have burnt toast for breakfast now and then, and that he shouldn’t take the other fellow's grouch too seriously. HHe learns that carrying a chip on his shoulder is the easiest way to get into a fight, f He learns that the quickest way to become unpopular is to carry tales and gossip about others. IHe learns that buck-passing always turns out to be a boomerang, and that it never pays. HHe comes to realize that the business could run along perfectly well without him. HHe learns that it doesn’t matter so much who gets the credit so long as the business shows a profit. cHe learns that even the janitor is human and that it doesn’t do any harm to smile and say ’’Good Morning , even if it is raining. HHe learns that most of the other fellows are as ambitious as he is, that they have brains that are as good or better, and that hard work and not cleverness is the secret of success. ]He learns to sympathize with the youngster coming into the business, because he remembers how bewildered he was when he first started out. He learns not to worry when he loses an order, because experience has shown that if he always gives his best, his average will break pretty well. He learns that no man ever got to first base alone, and that it is only through cooperative effort that we move on to better things, f He learns that bosses are no monsters, trying to get the last ounce of work out of him for the least amount of pay. but that they are usually fine men who have succeeded through hard work and who want to do the right thing, f He learns that folks are not any harder to get along with in one place than another, and that the getting along” depends about ninety-eight per cent on his own behavior.
