TO THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION We, the graduating class of 1965, wish to express our appreciation for all you have done for the betterment of our school and our community through your efforts in planning and carrying through the building program. Our school when completed this spring, will not only be enlarged and modernized, it will also become a recreational and cultural center for Odessa, Montour and the surrounding area. The new 796 seat auditorium will provide facilities for public and political meetings, visiting performers, amateur theatricals, concerts, motion pictures, and our various school productions. With the addition of the swimming pool for our physical education department, the people of our community can have year-round enjoyment. The pool will also provide the facilities for instruction in swimming and life-saving. We realize the many hours of planning, discussion, and reviewing of blue prints that you have given for the improvement of our school and community. And as the first class to be graduated from the new auditorium, we wish to thank you and to compliment you on making a new civic center for Odessa and Montour. Sincerely, The Class of '65 6 Mr. Henry B. Heslop, Supervising Principal TO THE CLASS OF 1965 My sincere congratulations are extended to the Class of 1965. You havehadto face many obstacles and hardships because of the building program. Lack of classroom space, no gym for basketball games, no auditorium for dramatics, and then distractions of air hammers, power drills, and various other noises, not to mention the constant flow of steam fitters, plumbers, electricians, tin knockers, tile setters, laborers, plasterers, sheet-metalworkers, and carpenters, have all contributed to make 1964-65 a difficult year. I have been particularly impressed with the attitude and respect you have shown toward the school and the teachers. You have pursued your studies in a workmanlike manner. My confidence in you as young men and women has never been greater. I feel that you are capable of facing the challenges of modern society, accepting your responsibilities, and looking to the future with a positive attitude. In years to come we hope that you will return to your Alma Mater and enjoy the facilities which you saw in their early development. Sincerely yours, FACULTY Mr. Edward Banfi Mr. Frank Brown Mr. Peter Arbach Mrs. Helen Covert 8 Mr. Delmar Bleiler AT OMCS 9 Mr. James Lyon Mr. Jerald Fowler FACULTY Mrs. Jean Goetchius Mr. Venico Fraboni Mrs. Nancy Metz 10 Mrs. Marian Hinman AT OMCS I I Mrs. Dorothy Jordan Mrs. Josephine Wilson MR. WILFRED GOODRICH Mr. Wilfred Goodrich Our class of 1965 takes unusual pride in dedicating our yearbook to you, Mr. Goodrich. We feel that you most eminently merit our recognition for two reasons: First, because you are completing 20 years of service to our school. Second, because of the exceptionally fine assistance you have given to the school building program as superintendent of our buildings and grounds. Actually, though, we feel we owe you our thanks, even more, for your work as our teacher and for your companionship for these past four years. Our inquiring reporter tells us that, after graduation from Cortland Normal School, you taught in a one-room school in Tioga County for five years and at Owego Free Academy for seven years. In 1945 you came to Odessa as a teacher of industrial arts and mechanical drawing. Among the other contributions you have made to our school, you drove a school bus for 17 years, you helped students by building furniture for class plays, by being on duty for athletic events, by chaperoning at many dances, and by acting as class advisor at large. You became our first qualified director of adult education in 1951, covering fourteen courses ranging from typing and homemaking to law and insurance. We want to compliment you upon your versatile career and upon the fact that you have missed only two days in 32 years. As our neighbor, we know that nine members of your family have engaged in teaching; your father, your mother, your two brothers, and four sisters, besides yourself. We have been happy to be classmates of your children, Jeanne and Fred, recent graduates of Odessa, and of your daughter, Virginia, who is now a Junior. We salute you with the wish that you will have many more years of active service and abundant good health. 12 Mr. Bowers, junior hi guidance Mr. Throop, psychologist Mrs. Vickio, nurse Miss Jacob, dental hygienist Mr. Ashe, speech therapist 13 FRANCIS ALGER Baseball 1, 2, 3; Football 1; Intramurals 1 JAMES ALLING Student Council 1; Vice-President 2; Class Representative 3; Boy's State 3 CARTER ANDERSON Football 1, 2, 3, 4; Baseball 1, 2, 3, 4; Wrestling 3; Treas. 1, 2; Lettermen's Club 4; Interclass Track Meet 1, 2 GERALD BANKS Projection Club 1, 2, 3; Chess Club 3: Art Club 2, 3 KATHRYN BOWEN Chorus 3, 4; Drama Club 4; Track 3; Newspaper Staff 4; Library Club 3, 4 JAMES BENJAMIN Intramurals 1, 2; Track 1, 2, 3; Wrestling 1, 2, 3, 4; Cross-Country 2, 3; Football 1; Lettermen's Club 4; Tournament Dry-den 2nd Place 16 CLAIRE BOWERS SHARON CRIPPEN Library Staff 3,4; Future Nurses Club 3, 4; Secretary 3,4 ; Yearbook Staff 4; Drama Club 4; Intramurals 3,4; Play Day 3,4; Newspaper Staff 4 PEGGY BROWN Youth County 3 KATHLEEN CRISPELL Art Club 3 MARK COOK Honor Society 3,4; President 4; Student Council 3,4; Spanish Club 3,4; Vice-President 3; Newspaper 2,3,4; Editorial Board 2,3,4; Advanced Placement DORIS DAVENPORT F.H.A. 3,4; Vice-President 4; Future Nurses 2,4; Drama Club 4; Track 2,3; Intramurals 1,2,3,4; Bus Patrol 3,4 17 CARLTON DEAN Basketball 1,2,3,4; Baseball 2,3,4; Intra-murals 1,2,3; Interclass Track 3,4; Football 2 LARRY DE LEURY Wrestling 1,2,3,4; Baseball 3; Football 4; Chorus 1; Boy's State 3; Intramurals 1,2,3,4 JANET DICKINSON Intramurals 1,3; Bus Patrol 2; Junior Play 3; Future Nurses Club 2,3,4 18 MAUREEN DIMMICK Honor Society 3,4; Student Council 2,3; Art Club 3; Spanish Club 1,3; Yearbook Layout Editor 4; Intramurals 1,2,3; Drama Club, Pres. 4; Band 4 JEAN FITCH Color Guard 1,2,3,4; Honor Society 3,4; Treasurer Honor Society 4; Intramurals 2,3,4; Secretary of Class 1,2,3,4; Youth County 3; Girl’s State 3; Miss New Year Queen 3 RICHARD FRABONI Baseball 1,2,3,4; Boy's State; Basketball 1,2; Projection Club; Intramurals 1,2,3,4 VICTOR GARDNER Football 1,2,3,4; Baseball 1,2,3,4; Student Council 2,3,4; President, Lettermen’s Club 4 EVA FRASIER Intramurals 2; Chorus 1; Library Club 4; Youth County 3; Yearbook Staff 4 19 FRANK GARTON Football 1, 2, 3; Basketball 1, 2, 3, 4; Baseball 1, 2, 3, 4; Honor Society, Pres. Mr. Dolan Senior Class Advisor The class of 1965 is approaching the end of four years in high school. This Senior year has proven to be the most hectic of them all. The beginning of the school year last September brought the start of the Great Stationery Drive” which lasted until February 1. In November, for two frantic weeks, Seniors scoured the country-side selling magazine subscriptions. On Friday the 13th of November, the freshmen were initiated at the Senior dance Senior Schemes. The Seniors had charge of sorting and distributing the individual pictures of all the Odessa school system. In December we selected the invitations and name cards for graduation. On December 23, we held another dance Jingle Bell Rock. The new year started plans for the Senior trip to New York City and the World's Fair. Selection of room mates for the trip brought a rise in anticipation for most Seniors. The Seniors greatly appreciate the efforts made by our advisor, Mr. Dolan, to organize our money-making projects and to accompany us on our trip. Our struggle to study against background construction noises and occasional blasts of cold air is more than offset by having the pleasure and distinction of being the first class to have graduation ceremonies in the beautiful new 796-seat auditorium. 31 32 How sweet it is! at the candy sales counter during lunch hour. Chequaga Falls (place of falling or roaring water) Montour Falls. OUR NEW BUS GARAGE completed in Fall 1964 The school fleet of 21 large buses and 2 station wagons travels 808 miles daily, transporting 1,200 school children. There are 22 bus drivers including 2 women. Salads and submarines. White or Chocolate? 33 LUIS our new friend from South America Odessa-Montour Central School's first foreign exchange student came to us this year as the result of a program sponsored by our student council and the local Lions Club. The program provides for an Odessa-Montour junior student to go to South America during the summer, andfor a Latin-American student to attend our school in the winter. Last year Peggy Ward was selected from our school to go to Ecuador for two months. Then Luis Guillermo J a ram illo, called Louie by most of the students, arrived in Odessa during November 1964. He is from the country of Columbia in the northwestern part of South America. His father owns a department store in Bogota and a large farm outside the city. Luis likes the United States and hopes to return to study architecture at Cornell University in Ithaca. He appreciates our sports and music programs as these are not given as much attention at his school. In general the private all-boy school which he attends is highly academic with principal emphasis upon preparing the students for college. His intensive course of nine subjects includes mathematics, science, THREE FOREIGN LANGUAGES, literature, and history, with little place for physical education, music, art, and shop. Luis visits with Mr. Fraboni, who teaches Problems of Democracy, and with Peggy Ward who spent last summer in Ecuador. Mr. Brown goes over program with J. Harington and OMCS band and chorus at World's Fair. 34 K German. NDERGRADUATES ROW 1: L. Hoover, M. Dibble, V. Alexander, K. Messersmith, E. Trader. ROW 2: W. Kent, D. Scott, L. Grover, S. At Montour Falls in 1965-66 we expect to be housed in a modern school plant containing 14 classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, stage, and appropriate health and administrative offices. The Odessa Elementary School has 8 additional classrooms which were used during the 1964-65 school year. In 1965-66 Odessa will have an elementary library, 2 station gymnasium, and new cafeteria facilities. A new auditorium, swimming pool, and music suite at Odessa will be used at various times by Odessa and Montour Elementary School students. A modern well equipped school plant is one of the requisites of a sound elementary school program. Our building program will provide us with excellent elementary school plants in Odessa and Montour Falls. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Lorraine Just, President; Dale Brown, Vice-President; Debbie Barton, Secretary; Gary Olin, Treasurer. The Student Council, under the advisorship of Mr. Fraboni, completed many projects and introduced several new ideas for the benefit of the students this year. The first order of business was to continue the Citizen of the Month program. This was followed by the sponsoring of a Foreign Exchange Program with Latin America. This brought Luis Jaramillo to O.M.C.S. The Council financed the Inter-class Scholastic Bowl for the cultural furthermentof our school. The final project undertaken for the members was to supply the students with permanent permission slips for basketball games, a project well received by O.M.C.S.'s loyal fans. ORATORICAL CONTEST First award in the American Legion Contest was won by Mark Cook, who spoke on the plight of the Negro and its influence upon the Constitution of the United States. Marcia Allen received second award for her talk on Our Changing Constitution. Each contestant gave a five-minute speech from memory. They were coached in advance by Mr.Ban-fi. To be eligible, a student must have attained an academic average of 85 or above and by participation in extracurricular activities, relations with other students and teachers demonstrate his possession of these qualities. The Society is not limited to the recognition of honorable students but rather encourages students towards better grades, greater service and leadership, and a more amiable character. The National Honor Society, in addition to its usual inductions, formulated an Inter-class Scholastic Bowl, patterned after the television show. They feel that this would bolster class spirit and encourage scholarship. ADVANCED PLACEMENT The advanced placement group traveled weekly to Ithaca College during the Fall Semester. Leon Washburn, Betsy Trader, and Larry Hall took the mathematics course from Mr. Frank Spitzer, while Jackie Heal, Kathy German, Mark Cook, and Dale Brown improved their literary abilities under Professor John Harcourt. 49 OMCS 1965 BAND HAS O.M.C.S. Also during the summer, they participated in the pageant of bands at the State Exposition in Syracuse. As the school year began the band took part, along with some 6,000 other band members from around the state, in the annual Cornell Band Day. They also played for the Halloween Parade in the Elementary School. Unfortunately, due to construction of the new auditorium no Christmas Concert was presented this year. Other performances during the year included the County Oratorical Contest at St. John's Seminary in Montour, the Spring Festival of Bands, the annual Tri-High Concert at Dundee, and presentation of our own Spring Concert. As this yearbook goes to print, they are rehearsing for this year's trip to the World's Fair. BRASS SECTION FIRST ROW: M. Garey, A. White, J. Dimmick, C.Green, T.Wood.G. Brown, J. Heal, B. Tague. Mr. Saxe's goal has been for the students to express themselves through art. This was aided by the opening of the new art room facilities in January. Some of the art students shared their talents by setting up exhibits at the autumn Open House and the Spring Art Fair; also by decorating the windows for Christmas, and painting the corridor signs for the offices. THING AFTER ANOTHER ONE DARNED THING AFTER ANOTHER ODTAA (meaning One Darned Thing After Another) proved to be an appropriate name for the 1964-1965 school newspaper. Starting with the new name, the staff set out on a year that well lived up to it. A large closet was located and refurnished as a combination press room and dark room. Before the January arrival of the equipment enabling the paper to be completely published at school, twenty pages of newsprint had been published at the WATKINS REVIEW; After January the staff planned to publish an issue every other week. In the fall the paper established itself as an open forum for students' opinions during a controversy over noon hour regulations, and maintained this position throughout the year. ACTIVITIES As a public service, the staff sponsored a system to regulate traffic in the halls, proposed a Club Card system to the Student Council, and advocated the purchase of a bulletin board for the main entrance besides throwing a Christmas Party gratis. MONEY-RAISING To pay expenses, a dance was held and the staff acted as a teenage reporting division to the TOWN CRIER. NEXT YEAR'S PLANS Planning for next year, some of the staff, accompanied by Mrs. Metz, their advisor, attended the Columbia University Conference at New York City in March, where ideas for another year of ODTAA were gathered. 70 SEATED: F. ODESSANEAN WINS 9th BLUE RIBBON Working to meet the rigid deadlines required to publish a yearbook, the ODESSANEAN Staff pushed ahead for another prize-winning publication. December 12 saw a large contingent of students from OMCS at the 42nd Conference of the Western New York Interscholastic Press Conference at Bennett High School in Buffalo, New York. The conference is sponsored by the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS to encourage improvement in school publications and to acquaint students with newspaper career opportunities. Under the guidance of Mrs. Wilson, the advisor, the staff studied the fundamentals of yearbook layout and publication, heard Mr. David Peugeot and Mr. Nelson Griswald speak on their work at the BUFFALO EVENING NEWS, examined yearbooks from other schools. The ODESSANEAN was given a high score of 81.5% by the judges and received a blue ribbon award for the ninth time since 1956. The staff raised money to pay for the entire cost of the 1965 ODESSANEAN through candy sales, a Smorgasbord dinner (a yearbook innovation and now an annual event), and the sale of subscriptions and advertising. We sincerely appreciate the support of all of our advertisers and trust that Odessa-Montour families will patronize them wholeheartedly. YEARBOOK STAFF'S TRIP TO BUFFALO 71 S. It seems a subzero hallway dressing room, no shower room, and only one half the gym to practice in are not conducive to an easy season. Despite these conditions, the team has gone all out, producing countless thrills for their faithful fans. You needn’t slip your clothes in a grip And start on a long, long hike. You'll only find what you left behind. For there's nothing that’s really new. It's a knock at yourself When you knock your firm. It isn't your firm — it's YOU! Good firms are not made by men at raid Lest someone else gets ahead. When everyone works and nobody shirks.
