Expansion 1959 was a year of expansion in which the Odessa Central School was enlarged by the annexation of two Montour districts and became the Odessa-Montour Central School. One of these, Montour District 2, covers the area to the north and east of the Village of Montour Falls; the other, Montour District 5, includes the Village of Montour Falls itself. These increases bring the area of the new Odessa-Montour Central District to approximately 150 square miles, with a school enrollment of 1,400 pupils. District 5, made up of parts of the Towns of Montour and Dix, was annexed on March 24th; District 2, made up of part of the Town of Montour, was annexed on July 1st. MEADER G. PATTINGTON Along with other changes brought about by Supervising Princ pa these annexations was an enlargement of the Board of Education from five to seven members. A welcome is extended in the Yearbook to the two new members, Mr. John T. Barton and Dr. James J. Norton, residents of the Village of Montour Falls. An additional grade school building located in Montour Falls was added to the two Odessa school buildings and an extra bus was added to the bus fleet to bring in 7th and 8th graders from Montour Falls. The union of these two new districts with the former Odessa Central School District has produced an enlarged Central District, providing the possibilities of greater offerings in the educational field. The closeness of many years of education, commerce and industry in Montour Falls and Odessa has now reached its climax in a combined educational system for the common good. — M.G.P. 4

As a salute of welcome to the two new school districts which have joined Odessa this school year, we are proud to publish this sun-lit picture of the falls. Known originally as Chequaga Falls (place of falling or roaring water), this was the scene where Red Jacket, Seneca Chief and illustrious orator, in his youth pitted his voice against the waterfall. Louis Philippe, the Citizen King of France, while in exile in America, painted a picture of this remarkable falls and the picture was placed in the Louvre in France. It is the valley of tumbling waters, Montour Falls. 1960 ODESSANEAN STAFF Photo of the falls through courtesy of Mrs . George M . Layton, librarian of Memorial Library, Montour Falls, New York.
