One of these, Montour District 2, covers the area to the north and east of the Village of Montour Falls; the other, Montour District 5, includes the Village of Montour Falls itself. These increases bring the area of the new Odessa-Montour Central District to approximately 150 square miles, with a school enrollment of 1,400 pupils. District 5, made up of parts of the Towns of Montour and Dix, was annexed on March 24th; District 2, made up of part of the Town of Montour, was annexed on July 1st. MEADER G. PATTINGTON Along with other changes brought about by Supervising Princ pa these annexations was an enlargement of the Board of Education from five to seven members. A welcome is extended in the Yearbook to the two new members, Mr. John T. Barton and Dr. James J. Norton, residents of the Village of Montour Falls. An additional grade school building located in Montour Falls was added to the two Odessa school buildings and an extra bus was added to the bus fleet to bring in 7th and 8th graders from Montour Falls. The union of these two new districts with the former Odessa Central School District has produced an enlarged Central District, providing the possibilities of greater offerings in the educational field. The closeness of many years of education, commerce and industry in Montour Falls and Odessa has now reached its climax in a combined educational system for the common good. — M.G.P. 4 SEATED: Left to Right, George Hoffman, Irving D. And we are pleased to extend a most cordial welcome to our new Board members, Mr. John T. Barton and Dr. James J. Norton. THE ODESSANEAN STAFF As a salute of welcome to the two new school districts which have joined Odessa this school year, we are proud to publish this sun-lit picture of the falls. Known originally as Chequaga Falls (place of falling or roaring water), this was the scene where Red Jacket, Seneca Chief and illustrious orator, in his youth pitted his voice against the waterfall. Louis Philippe, the Citizen King of France, while in exile in America, painted a picture of this remarkable falls and the picture was placed in the Louvre in France. It is the valley of tumbling waters, Montour Falls. 1960 ODESSANEAN STAFF Photo of the falls through courtesy of Mrs . George M . Layton, librarian of Memorial Library, Montour Falls, New York. Senior Class History We the Class of 1960 were made fully aware of our lowly status of Freshmen early in September of 1956. We then sponsored the dance Winter Twilight —a huge success. But this was only the beginning! In our Sophomore year, we opened the social season with Honeycomb Hop, featuring very novel decorations. This year was no exception, we took our second Booby Prize in the interclass track meet. During our Junior year, we rivaled the Seniors with our production of Act Your Age —even though it did play second fiddle to the weather! Several dances, fruit cakes, and Christmas wreath sales really kept us at a merry pace. Our two most successful social events were the Hula-Hoop Hop and our Prom, One Night in May. We again won our coveted Booby Prize. Seniors at last! What more can we say except----------in our roles as salesmen, social leaders, and performers, we established an unattainable precedent! And then there was New York City—but we won't go into that! ! ! Our Senior Ball was a fitting climax of four wonderful years in high school. We then donned our caps and gowns and bid a fond farewell to the hallowed halls of O.C.S. 10 LINDA RAMONA BARTON Junior Play............3 Senior Play............4 Track...........1,2,3,4 Bond............1,2,3,4 Basketball Playday . . .2 Intramurals . . . .1,2,4 Class Treasurer . .1,3,4 Cheerleoding . . . .2,3 Honor Society ... 3,4 Co-Chairman . . . 3,4 N.Y.S.S.M.A. . 1,2,3,4 Elmira College Key Award................3 Syracuse Citizenship Award..............3,4 Letter of Comendation National Merit Scholarship..........4 Oratorical Contest . . 4 THANNA BELL BERRY Yearbook Staff . . .4 Junior Play .... 3 Track . . . 1,2,3,4 Intramurals . . 3,4 ROBERT BENNETT Class President . . .3,4 Track .... .1,2,3,4 F.F.A President . . . Junior Class The Class of '61 started its frantic year by electing the following class officers: President Nancy Halpin, Vice-President Bob Hoover, Secretary Donna Kent, Treasurer Jeanne Gunning. The following month at the football games, the spectators could hear the cry of Pins! Programs! Pom-poms! This enterprise was closely followed by another, that of selling fruit cakes. Before Christmas we staged the play. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, which was directed by Mr. Scott. On January 8, we held our first dance the Snowman Shuffle . It was a big success. April 29 the Juniors tripped the light fantastic at their Prom—a gala affair. May 6 the Juniors held a Farewell Seniors Dance which concluded our year's activities. Since the Odessa and Montour Elementary Schools were combined under one elementary administrative unit, some elementary school activities and procedures were co-ordinated.
