rMil’ll ICCY “We’re taking you on an imaginary journey—far into the future. Now can you imagine that this is 1957? We are boarding our stratosphere rocker ship in London. Won t you join us as we go to the Class of ’47 reunion at Monessa. Monessa? That’s a strange name. Oh, i see. Wilma Smith, a fellow-passenger, tells me that her home town Montour and Odessa have merged into one large city. Wilma is happily married to a young doctor. Fasten your safety belts! We are landing at Paris. A tall handsome couple board the plane. Well, for gosh sakes, if it isn’t my old friend, Henrietta Appel. What are you doing in Paris, “Hank?” So you’re returning to Hollywood after several appearances with your husband Art Rogers. It’s too bad you will miss our first reunion. My goodness how fast these rocket-ships go. Here we are at Rome, Italy. A dis-tinguished looking gentleman in a business suit is entering the plane. Why, it is “Foo” Brown. What brings you to Rome, Foo? Are you going to the reunion? The hotel managers convention, I remember, you are owner of FOO’S INN 1 So you are going to the reunion. Next stop, Moscow. Fasten your safety belts! Bruce Woodworth, what on earth are you doing in Moscow? You have a world-wide plumbing business. How do you manage to get all over the world? Oh, I see, you have a special equipped atom-plane with which you make weekly trips around the world. Gee! Who would have thought in ‘47 that in ten years it would take only fifteen minutes to go from Moscow to Tokyo. Keep your seats everybody. We are only stopping five minutes. Fasten your safety belts I We’re landing at San Francisco. So long Hank. Maybe you both can be with us next year. Look everybody! What a stupendous flying field it is. It’s the new Cotton-Hanlon air field! Isn’t it a beautiful sight from the air? Let’s find a taxi everybody and get over to the school. Here’s a taxi. Odessa Central School, Sir. You don’t mean it I It’s the Monessa Junior College and High School. Our school always was a progressive one but this is a pleasant surprise. I should know you driver. Your name is Roblyer. Why sure. You’re another old classmate of mine. So you’re the owner of “LOUIES TAXIS” We’re on Main Street----good old Main Street. Louie is telling us about some of our former classmates as we go down Main Street to the school “See that fellow with the mink coat? That’s Wilbur Decker. He has traps all over the world that he controls by radar. Remember my girlfriend, Shirley Bradley? She is owner of Ada s Beauty Salon. See that store made of plastic? Well, that’s her place of business. Oh! Look there! One of France Decker’s famous helo-buses. They certainly revolutionized transportation. Now watch on my left and you 11 see a large grocery store and meat market made of glass. Yes, —you’ve guessed it. Don Taylor bought Redner s store. There in the That’s Rose Povero’s RECORD SHOP. By the way, Barbara Wagner is the window is Lynn Reynolds, the meat surgeon. See where all those teenagers are going? They go there just like we did ten years ago. Soloist there. There’s an example of a successful man.—that gentleman going up the bank steps. It’s another old friend, A1 Drake. He’s president of the First National Bank. The County Court House is on my right. The District Attorney is Marilyn Lovell. She certainly has a wonderful job. Look at that beautiful church. It s the FIRST BAPTIST. Now think, who would be the pastor. Of course, it’s Dean Nordquist and Geraldine Sherman is assistant pastor. They certainly are doing wonderful work. 27

Lynn Reynolds leaves his bus driving job to anyone who can get it. Dean Nordquist leaves his athletic ability to Bill Gardner. Marjorie Flatt leaves her typing ability to Ray Dickens. Bruce Woodworth gives his diet to Lisle Anderson in hopes that he will grow up. Helen Jean Chapman gives her shortness to Loretta Cole. Shirley Bradley gives Lillian Crout her technique of staying out of trouble. Wilma Smith leaves her hair to Barbara Conklin. Marilyn Lovell leaves her ability to get away with things to Irene Jenkins. Robert Brown leaves his car to the future drivers of O. C. S. Wendell Learn leaves his height to George McLaughlin. Helen Bement leaves all the boys to the girls of O. C. S. Don Taylor leaves his knack of getting out of work to Milton Smith. Paul Pelham leaves his wolfish ways to Ted Covert. Any of our possessions that remain we leave to the Odessa Board of Education to use as it sees fit. Finally, we do hereby name and appoint as the executors of this, our last will and testament, Elsie, the Borden Cow, Richard, of Open the Door Richard, and Influence. In witness whereof we, the Class of 1947, the testator have set our hand and seal on this Twenty-third day of June in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty-seven. , Now that house, encircled by the white picket fence, is where the Mayor lives. Sure, he s another one of our class, Delvan Decker. He married Pat Sidle about five years ago. That road straight ahead goes out to the snazziest DUDE RANCH in the world! Vera Carrigan and Paula Champagne both loved horses, so they went into partnership. Their ranch is even talked about on Mars I Just beyond their ranch is Clyde Beebe’s chicken farm. We always knew that he would raise chickens. Well, folks here we are at the school. Sorry, I can’t tell you more.” ‘Bye, Louie. See you later. You’re coming to the reunion aren’t you? Of course. “As we enter the school we are greeted by the Principal. Paul Pelham and his private secretary, Beverly Harrington. We are having a chat about the good old days, when we are interrupted by three gentlemen. The tall one with the curly hair is Art Covert, of course. What are you doing now? No, you can’t be. A plantation owner in the deep South! What about you George? Long time, no-see. Professor of Mathematics at the college! We might have known George Van Buskirk would be a math teacher. This isn t Douglas Aber, is it? Well, well. So you’re the swoonatra of ‘FOO’S INN . Well, we’ll see you again before dinner but we must meet the rest of the crowd. Let s go over to this group of girls and see whom we remember. There’s a short dark girl. Of course, it’s Joy Smith. Like your work? Oh! yes. You’re superintendent of nurses at the Arnot-Ogden Hospital. Well, my goodness. Here s Marjorie Palmer. What are you doing? What? No, kidding. The star dancer at ‘FOO’S INN’. You always did like to dance. Who is the shy girl standing by herself? Of course, it’s Mary Wheaton. So you still haven t married. Oh, well. Maybe you’re just as well off. Here’s some more of our classmates. Marjorie Flatt, and Helen Bement. Marjorie is language teacher at the school and Helen is the star of Perry Como’s Supper Club. I should know you lady. Your name is Borra. Oh, yes. Mary Borra. You’re just a happy housewife. What about the girls who got married? Shirley Barrett and Helen Chapman both married before graduation. They are happily settled on farms with their husbands. What? Shirley Hodge married Lynn a few years after graduation, but she still keeps her job as model in Elmira. “Could I sell you a Fuller-Brush?” We know the one and only person that would be a salesman—Wendell Learn. What are you doing? We might have known you’d be top salesman of the FULLER BRUSH COMPANY. Who is arriving last but our class advisor, Mr. Dolan. He is now directing stage plays in New York City. Since everybody is here, we will now go to the dining room for dinner.” Geraldine Sherman Wilma Smith CAN YOU IMAGINE ! ! Mary Alice Wheaton - being boisterous Vera Carrigan - not going horse back riding Helen J. Chapman - going with anyone else but Scotty Art Covert - with straight hair Doug Aber - not fooling with Paul in English class Marjorie Palmer - staying in nights Paul Pelham - not studying his lessons Rose Povero - not flirting with the boys Lyn Reynolds - admitting that girls can cook George Van Buskirk - not “feeding a big line” to the girls Bobbie Wagner - not being helpful Dean Nordquist - getting his history homework done on time Shirley Hodge - not going out with Lyn Pat Sidle - not dreaming of Delvy 28
