4Left to rightjz James Barkley, Fayetta Murr, Lois Schaeffer, Doyle Hansen. WNAX FORUM The above students participated in the High School Forum Series ,which was sponsored by WNAX last fall. This is the third year that the Sioux City radio station has conducted such a pro- gram, and the third year that Odebolt has been among the participating schools. Two years ago, twelve schools were included in the plan, and t-he programs proved so popular that the number of schools was increased to twenty this year. The program is recorded on a wire recorder in the school auditorium by WNAX technicians, and is broadcast on Tuesday evenings from WNAX, one school each week for twenty weeks during the fall and winter. This year our topic for discussion, which was chosen by vote of all pupils in the school, was Is Permanent Peace a Possibility? It was of timely interest to everyoneg and it required much study and concentrated thought on the part of the four students selected to represent the school. Lois chose the negative side of the discus- sion, while Fayetta, Jim, and Doyle attacked the topic from the affirmative angle. The panel, accompanied by Mr. Shaw, speech director, were guests of WNAX in Sioux City on April 19, where they met with the speakers from the other nineteen participating schools. At this time the common subject, Are We Americans Losing Our Basic Freedoms ? was assigned, and each group prepared a speech which was given later in the day in competition by one speaker from each school. Jim Barkley represented Odebolt and he went through to the semi-final contest, which was broadcast that evening. Bill Kruse of East High, Sioux City, was chosen by the judges as the best speaker. His award is a trip to Wash- ington, D. C. On April 20, Jim Barkley appeared on a panel arranged by Station KAYL of Storm Lake. Eight schools in this vicinity were represented by stu- dents who spoke on Zeal for Democracy. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Junior Class, under the direction of Mr. F. J. Shaw, presented their annual play Thursday and Friday, November 18 and 19, 1948. The comedy, Headed for Eden by Sidney Duvall, was presented by two different casts on successive eve- mngs. SPEECH Interest was high in speech this school year, with seventeen contestants entered in the elimina- tion contest. At the home contest held on February 7, 1949, those entered in Oratorical were James Barkley, Charles Krusenstjerna, and John Witt, Dramatic- Jean Landgraf, Velma Paul, Helen Reuber, Lois Rohlf, and Lois Schaefer, Humorous-Mary Bird, Carol Schaefer, Joan Taphorn, and Joan Wilken, Interpretative Reading-Alleen Lindquist, Helen Reuber, and 'Lois Schaefer, Original Oratory- Doyle Hansen, Radio Speaking-James Barkley and Joan Wilken, One-Act Play-Doyle Hansen, Howard Hoefling, Jane Teaquist, Lois Schaefer, Melvin Lindner, and James Barkley, Extempora- neous Speaking-Doyle Hansen. The sub-district contest was held at Hayes Consolidated, the pre-district at Ida Grove, and the district contest at Estherville. At the district contest the play received a two rating, as did Velma Paul wih her dramatic selection, and Doyle Hansen in Extemporaneous Speaking. Jim Barkley was awarded a one rating in the Oratorical Divi- sion. Jim won the right to represent Odebolt in the state final contest at Boone which was held April 23, 1949. He Won a one rating in his oratorical selection Our Beachheads of the Future. Thank you, Mr. Shaw, for your interest and help. SENIGR CLASS P'LAY We Shook the Family Tree is a new comedy from the novel of the same name by Hildegarde! Dolson, It is a three-act play, full of adventures. and escapades that keep the family tree aquiver. Young Hildegarde is desperately anxious to attract. the attention of some eligible senior, for it's al- most Saturday night, and no boy has even hinted that he'd like to take her to the big dance. She wins the school debate with an impassioned plea against drinking, but instead of attracting boys with her brains, she only convinces everyone that her father must be a terrible drunkard. Friends call to suggest Alcoholics Anonymous. Despite Mothers horror at these growing wild stories about her abstemious husband, she's moved by Hildegarde's plight, and she takes action. Mother knows a nice boy, and she's sure he'd love to go with Hildegarde. She calls his mother. Hildegarde, not knowing who he may be, brags to the other girls about her date-only to learn that the boy is Freddie-the one boy in school whose old-fashioned parents force him to wear knickers! Hildegarde pleads with her father to let her break the date, but Father is mad, for everyone is convinced now that he's a great drinker. Furthermore, Freddie is the son of Father's boss. Father, in danger of losing his job at the bank because of all the talk Hilde- garde has started, invites his boss out to the house to see for himself how sane and sensible his family really is. Hildegarde, her face smeared with beau- ty clay, dashes into the room screaming that her Sixty-two brother has put a large live bass in the bathtub. The boss is stunned, all the more so when his son, Freddie, bursts in wearing long pants which he had hooked from Hildegarde's brother. It all looks like the end of everything, and they all turn on Hildegarde, for, one way or another, she's at the bottom of every single disaster. Finally, how- ever, by overthrowing the domination of his mother, Freddie overcomes his inferiority complex and, re- splendent in a new suit-with long pants-he escorts Hildegarde to the long awaited prom.
