We, the seniors of this year's class, call ourselves the '49'ers also, and we too have been seeking treasure. Our quest has not been so picturesque as that of one hundred years ago, and our treasure is intangible, but it is nonefthefless valuable. Our education may take us further than a bag of gold dust would, at least, that is our hope and the hope of our parents, our teachers, and our community, all of whom have joined forces to make our education possible. Many of the nuggets we have acquired are ours because of the hard work, selffdenial, and hours of practice which we have been willing to put into our quest. We are proud of our achievements and are happy to record them in this, our yearbook. Annual Staff Early last fall we, the class of '49, voted to carry on the tradition, started when we were freshmen, of publishing an annual. The class elected Don Jackson and Alleen Lindquist as editors, and a very capable staff of seniors to assist them. Bob Watts, the business manager, was responsible for the sales and finances of the TROJAN. The job of selling advertisements was handled especially well this year by Douglas Boerner and Bob Moffitt. Snapshots, paste, imagination, and patience were the ingredients used by Joan Einspahr, who was the Layout Editor, in concocting the many pages of the book. Shirley Siebrecht was kept busy at her typewriter as the Copy Editor. Two new staff positions were created this year-Photograph Edif tor, which was filled by Bill Rex, who saw that the annual was correctly illustrated, and Alumni Editor, in charge of the address lists, a job handled by Mary Bengford. Miss Bruce, who was chosen sponsor, added all her knowledge and experience to our organization, and so now, with the cooperation of every member of Odebolt High School, we are happy to present the 1949 TROJAN. We hope it gives the reader as much enjoyment as it has afford' ed the staff. Four ROSMER L. BRUCE Dedication We, the class of 1949, dedicate this, the '49 TROIAN, to Miss Rosrner Bruce, whose direc' tion and sponsorship have helped us make our year book a success. Throughout our high school years, she has been one of our closest advisers and most sincere friends. At this time, Miss Bruce, we wish to express our gratitude and our best wishes For your future. We have contributed to all of the extra curricular activities of O. H. S. ln athletics the boys were letter winners in football, basketball, and track, while the girls excelled in soft' ball and basketball. We were also represented in declamatory work. One member of our class was chosen to be on the WNAX Forum. We were outstanding in the music field-participants in marching band, concert band, glee clubs, mixed chorus, and many small ensembles. Seven of our group were soloists. We were the second senior class to attend Career Day in Sac City, which was sponsored by the County Board of Education. There We listened to many interesting discussions and lectures on various careers. Our Skip Day, May 13, took us to Ames where we enjoyed High School Day, a part of the Veishea weekend festival. This '49 TROIAN, to be issued on Class Day, May 20, has been our major project this year. Class Day closes our school days in Odebolt High, and as we leave, We carry with us many fond memories of our school days. The loud noise was identified as the Original Dixieland Band featuring Don Konrady at the pi' ano. After they had played the same piece four times, they were removed to make way for the sec' ond act-beautiful dancing girls, swaying rhythmically to the beat of native drums. The third act was an interest' ing demonstration of horse sense by Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger, who was very much upftofdate on school gossip. Next came an astounding exhibition of brute strength by Bongo, 'The World's Strongest Human. During this act Bongo lifted a 1,000 lb. weight with his bare teeth. of Wild West act. While the equipm.ent was be' ing set up, Elviry favored the au' dience with several accordian solos accompanied by Cactus on his gee' tar. Bill then fascinated the crowd with his trick shooting and as a grand climax, Mr. Ogden volunf teered to let the star shoot a balf loon from his mouth at twenty paces. Mr. Ogden was only slight' ly injured. After the smoke cleared, the en' tire cast came on stage for the Finale, and the curtain fell amid thunderous applause after the singing of Little Brown Jug. The entire school attended the program and paid the admission price of an annual sub' scription. Refreshments were sold by the staff, and by the end of the afternoon the TROJAN was well on its way to financial success. Twenty-one Lflass Przfplzecy Our forebears, those 'Forty-Niners of one hundred years ago were remarkably successful when we consider the crude tools they used and the hardships they encountered! In 1933 thousands of Americans oh'ed and ah'ed at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. And the atom had not even disintegrated at that time! Who knows what Wonders may become commonplace in the next few years? When the radio is a curio in a museum, and television palls, let's turn the knob of a Futur-o-scope, and see what is going to hap- pen. Just now I am thinking of my classmates, now, at the time of our graduation from Odebolt High School. How much worry and suspense we can save ourselves by that little invention. Ah, yes- the screen is becoming clear-I can see now that: South America is raving over Bill Bird, who is touring that continent with' his now-famous Cac- tus Bi1l's Original' Wild West Show. Bill is sur- rounded by beautiful senoritas and seems to be enjoying himself immensely. Also featured in the extravaganza is Alvera Lansink and her Daugh- ters of the Pioneers. Now back to the United States. From Broad- way comes word that Melvin tThe Profilel Lind- ner has accepted the role of Jess in the stage portrayal of Glenn E. Bernhardt's latest novel, SUZETTE, FLAME OF NEW ORLEANS. Dra- matic critic Fayetta Murr predicts a record run for the production. What's this? An advertisement! The James Klus Beverage Co. announces the perfection of their latest soft drink, Chippy Cola in the 18 oz. bottle with the bright red and green label. Ah, here is a familiar face. Robert Hansen, New York fight promotor, is announcing that a match to decide the wrestling championship of the world will be held June 3 in Madison Square Garden. Challenger Don Konrady is very confident, and he looked good when he mangled two exhibi- tion opponents yesterday for the benefit of the -press. Look at the smile on Shirley Siebrecht's face! She just won the international typnig contest with a record rate of 239Vi words per minute! tUsing two typewriters, of course.l She is private secre- tary to Robert L. Watts, president of the Watts- All Drug Co. We are now in a secluded laboratory in the Maine woods, where Dr. William F. Rex, formerly of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is putting the finishing touches on his triple-atomic, 40 cylinder, 8 cycle, 3 valves-in-head, water cooled engine to propel his Put-Put IV race car in his third assault on the world land speed record. The machine will be driven by 'Carol Youngren, world famous speed driver and four-time Indianapolis winner. From San Francisco comes word that Duane Einspahr, of Odebolt, Iowa, has won the title of the t'World's Most Perfectly Developed Man from Charles Atlas there this afternoon. The spectators were astounded when Einspahr raised the west end of Golden Gate Bridge three feet, seven inches with his lower lip. While tuned.to California, we intercept an in- terview with Col. Richard Morr, who reports ex- Twenty-two 44 L ,, . ceptional accuracy with the new standard army rifle, the Breon 162, designed by Duane Breon, FBI ballistics expert of Washington, D. C. As we return to New York City, we find sev- eral familiar names in the financial spotlight. Dorothy Albrecht has just bought out Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe for an undisclosed sum. Ferne Kessler, Wall Street stock broker, has won her 37,000,000 income tax suit against the federal government. She has secluded herself on her Long Island estate, and cannot be reached by reporters. Mary Bengford has announced that she will retire from professional basketball this year. She has been the leading scorer for the past eleven years in the N.A.C.C. tournaments. Word comes from Bombay, India, that Beverly Witt just passed that point on her third non-stop, round-the-world flight. Now beautiful music is heard over the loud- speaker. It is the Philadelphia Symphony, giving its last concert under the direction of Alleen Lind- quist, famed woman conductress, who has resigned her post to tour Africa to complete her analysis of primitive music. Miss Lindquist has chosen to conclude her career by directing the world pre- miere of Donald Jackson's Concerto for Accord- an and Tuning Fork. At the accordian will be Phyllis Schramm, European virtuoso. This work is beyond the ordinary because in its orchestration it calls for a large flock of Mallard ducks, CA Flat? and three rusty hinges. Music lovers will welcome this new composition with open arms and closed ears. Smith's Laundry Soap is sponsoring a new daytime serial Joan Faces Life, with Joan Ein- spahr in the title role. Well, well, if we haven't tuned in to our fa- vorite Iowa station, VQWA, in 'Odebolt. Maybe we can catch some local news. H'm, the Flogstad Baking Co. will be closed for a few days for the installation of Arda Lee's latest invention, the Doughnut-holer. Clara Taphorn is surely proud of the silver cup she won milking cows at the State Fair. While she visited in Des Moines, she was entertained by Audrey Schultz, who is now manager of the Hotel Fort Des Moines. Dallas Rohlf, owner of the former Adams Ranch, recently gave 352,000,000 to Iowa State College for the construction of the Corn Bowl. Athletic Director, Douglas Boerner, says plans are already being made for post-season games in this stadium, which is to be the largest in the midwest. From Des Moines comes word that the Acme Book Co. is publishing a new set of primary read- ers written by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jean Landgraf. A former Iowan, Robert Moffitt, now owner of the Dublin Imitation Shamrock Manufacturing Co., of Dublin, Ireland, held the winning ticket in the Irish Sweepstakes for the third consecutive year. The luck of the Irish! What's this? You underclassmen want to look into our Futur-o-scope? No, we wouldn't want to discourage you. After all, you knew that they had to close Odebolt High after we left, didn't you? We'll just turn it off now-you can try it next year. ,Cast Will and Eksfamelrf We, the Senior Class, of Cdebolt High, do declare this to be our last Will and Testament. Although the tasks you set us Were difficult to do, And the scholarship requirements Oft made us cross and blue, Your ears were deaf to pleading, We worked-and it did pay- We achieved our noble purpose As we attest today. We'll take no tearful leaving, We'll say no sad goodfbyes, For, though our hearts are heavy, The world before us lies. Our school days have been happy, But now 'tis time to go. Behind are recollections, Ahead our futures glow. As children, tired of playing, At sunset hurry home, Back to Gdebolt High School We, too, some day shall come. Moving on to first grade we gained Howard Gonnerman, Jack Gunderson, Don Sorenson, Duane Breon, Jerry Bruning and John Mayberry. Miss Aden was our teacher and how well we remember how we enjoyed school for now we got to go all day. Then to second grade where Miss Aaron was to steer us for our next year. Here we were joined by Patsy Brand, Royce Hannel, Glenna Jean Morrow, Donna Jean McElravy, Tillman McFarland, Charles Neville and Paul Seiler. Next across the hall to third grade with Miss Wallace as the teacher. That year our roll call in- cluded Beverly Witt and Douglas Glesmann. The highlight of this year was our postoffice which we made from orange crates or what-have-you. Miss Sutton was waiting for us in fourth grade. Not much excitement occurred during this year only that we had to duck once in a while so we wouldn't get hit by the blackboard erasers. However, Miss Sutton was a good teacher. It was a happy day for us when we moved up to fifth grade for now we were upstairs with the big kids. Miss Gordon was our teacher. We gain- ed Arda Lee Flogstad, Douglas Boerner, Dallas Rohlf, and Duane Breon, Duane having moved away wasn't with us in fourth grade but joined us again in the latter part of fifth grade. In sixth grade our teacher was Miss Zwiep. I-low well we all remember all the many themes we had to write!! This year we gained Leonard Nev- ille, Bob Moffitt and Mary Buchanan. Seventh grade was a very new experience for us, for now we were really in things. Why, we even had periods to study our assignments. George Hummel was our only recruit that year. , Eighth grade was a hard one and most of us spent our time studying. Alleen Lindquist joined us in eighth grade. Our freshman year really was a year full of parties. We especially remember the one Arda Lee had at Hallowe'en. Seems some of the older kids tried to crash it too, didn't they? That year we really grew, with twenty classmates added to our number: Gerald Bengford, Mary Bengford, Bill Bird, Robert Brown, Mathilda Bruns, Ramon Ding- es, Duane Einspahr, Beverly Fries, Hug-h Gore, Ferne Kessler, James Klus, Don Konrady Glenn Konrady, Alvera Lansink, Roger Neville, Audrey Schultz, Shirley Siebrecht, Clara Taphorn, Miriam Stephens and Carol Youngren. Now over to the otherbuilding. Wow! What fun. We even got to have some of our class parties with the older kids now. This year we gained Mar- tin Stover, Dick Carlberg and Raymond Huisenga. One of the highlights of our junior year was our class play, 'Spring Fever. This year we added Melvin Lindner, Jean Landgraf and Phyllis Schramm. And now we come to this our last year. We are proud of all that we have accomplished throughout our years of school and we hope that the Odebolt Community will be proud of us, as we finally reach our goal-our graduation. This year's Junior 'Class was well represented in everything from athletics to music-which, in- cidentally, is a long stretch. We, the class of '50, contributed our help in more ways than one. Many times, however, ourwillingness was not always helpful. talking about what they did last night and what they are going to do tomorrow. As you can readily see, as classes go, We are top notch. FOOTBALL - 1948 . The 1948 Trojans, although they lost four of their nine games, were able to bring home to Odebolt the Maple Valley Conference Champion- ship Trophy. due to injuries. However, the Trojan reserves, most- ly sophomores, came through in splendid fashion for this critical contest, and Odebolt not only won the trophy but also showed much promise for a good season in '49, title had to be decided in the annual grid feud between Odebolt and .Holstein in the last game of the season. Both teams entered the Armistice clash with perfect records. The ranks of the Trojans were depleted with injuries and because of this they were placed in the role of the underdog. Seven Odebolt lettermen were out of the Holstein fray CHEERLEADERS Joyce Thielke, Velma Paul, Barbara Boyd Forty-two This year's grid activities opened with a loop game at -Correctionville. The local eleven, fielding an inexperienced line and two new backfield mem- bers, had difficulty in getting started, and by half- time held only a 7 to 0 advantage. In the second half the Trojans settled down to football and the game ended 33 to 0. The Purple and Gold eleven ran into tougher competition in their opening home game against Kingsley, and had to be content with a 19 to 7 win. They won their third straight conference game by downing Moville 39 to 13. Odebolt jumped to a 33-0 first half time lead in this tilt and coasted through on their reserve strength in the last half. The Trojans lost their first game of the season when they suffered a 13 to 0 defeat at the hands of the Alta Cyclones. Alta, with a large, ex- perienced team, had to go out all the way for the victory. The following Friday the Trojans ran up against a tough Manilla eleven and lost their first Homecoming game in five years when the visitors pushed across a touchdown in the last few minutes to win 13 to 7. Sac City, enjoying one of their best grid sea- sons in years, tried to pour it on the Trojans to make up for the past Indian defeats, but could do no better than a 20 to 6 win. This was Sac City's Homecoming game and the Indians jumped to a 13 to 0 halftime lead. However, Gdebolt came back in the last half and played their county rivals on even terms. The last home game of the season for the local eleven was played in the rain and mud against a mediocre Wall 'Lake eleven. The Trojans captured this one by a 27 to O margin. The contest with Ida Grove was also played in rain and mud. Ida Grove held a 13 to 0 lead in the first half but the Trojans marched through them in the third quarter to tie up the game. With three minutes to go, Ida 'Grove crossed the goal line to hand the Trojans their fourth defeat of the season 19 to 13. Not too much had been expected of this year's eleven as nine of last year's starters had been lost through graduation. The line on the '48 Trojan team was made up entirely of inexperienced players and only Bob Hansen and George Hummel had had regular backfield experience. Dick Morr, Doug Boerner and Howard Hoef- ling, along with Hansen and Hummel, gave the Trojans a potent and speedy backfield. Morr and Hansen were the halfbacks, Hummel was the full- back, while Hoefling and Boerner shared the quar- terbacking job. On the line, Duane Breon and Tom Bengford were the ends, Duane Einspahr and Don Dreesen were the starting tackles, Jim Hess and Bob Moffitt held down the guard posts, and Jim Barkley was the center. H. S. The season's record was 13 wins against 6 losses. According to pre-season dope, the Trojans were not expected to have much for the 1948-49 season. Three regulars were lost from last year's squad, leaving only Bob Hansen, center, and Jim Brower, forward, available for this season. Hansen and Brower were the Trojans' leading scorers. Don Jackson, playing his first year of varsity ball, came through in fine fashion as a center on offensive and a guard on defensive work. His fight and excellent ability were important factors in the Trojans' 13 victories. George Hummel, junior, was the defensive standout, and often came through in a pinch for offensive help. Hummel played a Trojan guard po- sition. Dick Gardner and Doug Boerner shared the Forty-six remaining forward spot with Gardner pulling out in front toward the end of the season. Only five seniors will be lost this year from the squad of 19. Outstanding reserves were James Barkley, Tom Reynolds, Doyle Hansen fwho left due to an injury in mid-seasonb, Bob Watts, Charles Krusensjerna, and Tom Bengford. This year's sophomores led by veteran Jim Brower, show promise for next year's season. They include: Dick Swanson, Don -Gunderson, Kenneth Fertig, Sidney Huff, Gordon Friday, and Jack Nuetzman. The Trojans lost only one home game this year and that was to the strong Alta five. Lettermen for this season were as follows: Seniors-Bob Hansen, Don Jackson, Doug Boerner, Bob Watts, Juniors-Dick Gardner, George Hum- mel, Jim Barkley, and Ronald Rex, the basketball manager. Back Row: Cleft to rightJ Arda Lee Flogstad, Alleen Lindquist, Priscilla Francis, Joyce Thielke, Marjorie Dinges, JoAnn Bye, Mrs. King. Front Row: Ruth Treman, Ruth Kessler, Jane Teaquist, Lois Rohlf, Marlene Albrecht, Shirley Siebrecht, Marilyn Olberding, Joan Kies, Nancy Witt, Dorothy Bengford, Mary Bengford, Margaret Bengford. GIRLS' BASKETBALL The Trojanettes did not en' joy a successful season as far as wins and losses were concerned but they played much better than in previous years. The competition this year was very stiff. Several games were lost by a small margin. No doubt everyone will agree that the girls played their best game against Nemaha December 21, here in the Qdebolt gym. Ruth Kessler was the leading scorer with 214 points for the season. Quali- The Purple and Gold thinclads upset the dope bucket in the first outdoor meet of the year by winning the team trophy of the Holstein Relays. And to prove that this was no mere accident the same group brought home the team trophy from the Alta Relays. The scores of the leading contend- ers in the Holstein Relays were as follows: 'Odebolt, 28, Aurelia, 23, Milford, 20, Albert City, 205 and Holstein 14V2. In the Alta Relays the first live scored as follows: Odebolt, 47, Aurelia, 41, Holstein, 40, Alta, 38, and Albert City, 24. One of the highlights of the season was Odebolt's duel with Holstein for the supremacy of the Maple Valley Conference. In this meet, the Tro- jans came from behind in the last few events to defeat Holstein 102 to 92 11!12. Thus, the Trojans claimed the Conference track title, along with their football title. The Trojans also placed third in the Sac City Invita- tional meet. A medley relay team composed of Ken- neth Fertig, Tom Reynolds, Don Sorensen, and Bob Hansen was our only entry in the Sioux City Relays. It finished second. In the District meet at Cherokee, on May 6, the Tro- Fifty fying for the State Finals in the in- dividual events were Bob Hansen, 880g Don Konrady, 100 yard dashg Tom Reynolds, low hurdles, and George Hummel, football throw and discus. Four of Odebolt's five relay teams will be entered in the State Meet. Only the 880 relay team failed to qualify. The important factor in the success of the track team was the balance in the running events. This was es- pecially true in the relays. The re- lay teams placed in every meet they were entered, and the lowest position any one of the relay quartets finished was a fourth place for the 440 at the Sac City Invitational meet. It took some time for Mr. Allen to get all the little people started off on their left feet but after that was accomplished, the band was as good as it had ever been. The Marching band took two trips-one to Ida Grove, and one to Sac City. All who saw the Marching band perform complimented them. Jane Teaquist, the efficient drum major, was responsible for getting the band lined up properly in its various formations. The Majorettes, Jo Bye, Mary Bengford, and joan Wilken turned in performances which com' plemented that of the musicians. Marching band has been a wonderful experience for its entire personnel. Odebolt High School pupils are fortunf ate to be able to participate in such an activity. Concert band had its beginning the day Marching band was over. The band opened up the new band room in the annex. Several programs were given this year-a Christmas concert and a prefcontest concert. The band then started preparing for contest. Qur band moved up through the conf tests, one step at a time, until it finally received the highest award given in the state-a division I+ rating at Spencer on April 30. The small groups which also received division I rating at Spencer and went on to the State Contest at Perry, May 7, are: Woodwind Quartet, Woodwind Quintet, XVoodwind Trio, Bb Clarinet Quartet, Brass Quartet, and Drum Ensemble. Soloists who appeared at Perry are Don Jackson, Doyle Hansen, James Turner, Charles Krusenstjerna, john Witt, Kenneth Fertig. All people who appeared at State Contest in Perry received a II rat' ing, which is a good rating considering the competition of the AA and A schools. The school is rightfully proud of its fine Band. VOCAL MUSIC The vocal music department has aimed to give all students the opportunity to learn to appreciate and to love music. All grade students must attend a vocal class daily and other interests are provided for high school pupils-as the mixed chorus, girls' gree club, and boys' glee club. We have organized, also, small groups consist- ing of select voices. These groups include the girls' trio, girls' sextet, mixed quartet, and boys' quartet. And, yes, we have many fine soloists of whom we are extremely proud. Seniors who will be leaving this field of learning are Joan Einspahr, Alleen Lindquist, Mary Bengford, Arda Lee Flogstad, Beverly Witt, Jean Landgraf, Bob Moffitt, Bob Hansen, and Don Jackson. The following received a division I rating at district contest at Odebolt: Janet Sonksen, mezzo soprano solo 3 -Girls' Trio, Alleen Lindquist, Joan Einspahr and Joan Kiesg Girls' Sextet, Nancy Witt, Helen Reuber, Margaret Bengford, Janet Sonksen, Jean Landgraf, and Velma Paul, Baritone solo, Bob Moifittg Bass solo, Bob Hansen. The same group re- ceived a I rating at the state contest for large groups held at Spencer on April 28-30. Bob Moffitt and Bob Hansen both won I ratings on their vocal solos at Spen- cer and went on to the state contest for soloists and small groups at Perry on May 7, where Bob Moffitt was given a II and Bob Hansen a III rating. For the first time in the history of Cdebolt, the young people from all the churches observed the Christmas spirit togetherg and that was by combining and blending their voices in a mass choir. Cver 140 voices from every faith and def nomination participated in this event which took place in the Presbyterian Church. The choir, under the direction of Mrs. Mabel Schoeberl and accompanied by Mrs. Dorothy Purdy, sang a program of Christmas carols and the entire concert was broadcast over the towers of the Presbyterian Church. Immediately after the program was over the young people went on a sleigh ride. Even Mother Nature seemed to be in favor of this event, for a light snow was falling as the bobsleds, pulled by jeeps, tractors, and trucks, pulled out with their loads of boys and girls. The carolers sang at the homes of several individuals who were shutfins. Upon returning from the bobsled ride everyone went to the Presbyf terian Church basement where ladies from the different churches had prepared a chili supper for the hungry boys and girls. This event demonstrated the real Christmas spirit and it is hoped that next year we shall have the Second Annual AllfChurc'h Caroling Party. THE SCHOOL CHRONICLE Every Friday, sixth period, we, the Senior Stenography class, edit the School Chronicle for the following week. It consists of news from the Kindergarten to the Twelfth grade. We elected our Editor last spring, while the rest of us chose our own assignments, all working under the able direction of Miss Bruce. We have found this work very interesting and have enjoyed doing it. We hope you also have enjoyed reading our paper. We wish to thank The Odebolt Chronicle for their cooperation with us. We hope the future staffs of the School Chronicle will profit from this experience as we have. WNAX FORUM The above students participated in the High School Forum Series ,which was sponsored by WNAX last fall. This is the third year that the Sioux City radio station has conducted such a pro- gram, and the third year that Odebolt has been among the participating schools. Two years ago, twelve schools were included in the plan, and t-he programs proved so popular that the number of schools was increased to twenty this year. The program is recorded on a wire recorder in the school auditorium by WNAX technicians, and is broadcast on Tuesday evenings from WNAX, one school each week for twenty weeks during the fall and winter. This year our topic for discussion, which was chosen by vote of all pupils in the school, was Is Permanent Peace a Possibility? It was of timely interest to everyoneg and it required much study and concentrated thought on the part of the four students selected to represent the school. Lois chose the negative side of the discus- sion, while Fayetta, Jim, and Doyle attacked the topic from the affirmative angle. The panel, accompanied by Mr. Shaw, speech director, were guests of WNAX in Sioux City on April 19, where they met with the speakers from the other nineteen participating schools. At this time the common subject, Are We Americans Losing Our Basic Freedoms ? was assigned, and each group prepared a speech which was given later in the day in competition by one speaker from each school. Jim Barkley represented Odebolt and he went through to the semi-final contest, which was broadcast that evening. Bill Kruse of East High, Sioux City, was chosen by the judges as the best speaker. His award is a trip to Wash- ington, D. C. On April 20, Jim Barkley appeared on a panel arranged by Station KAYL of Storm Lake. Eight schools in this vicinity were represented by stu- dents who spoke on Zeal for Democracy. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Junior Class, under the direction of Mr. F. J. Shaw, presented their annual play Thursday and Friday, November 18 and 19, 1948. The comedy, Headed for Eden by Sidney Duvall, was presented by two different casts on successive eve- mngs. Sixty-one SENIGR CLASS P'LAY We Shook the Family Tree is a new comedy from the novel of the same name by Hildegarde! Dolson, It is a three-act play, full of adventures. and escapades that keep the family tree aquiver. Young Hildegarde is desperately anxious to attract. the attention of some eligible senior, for it's al- most Saturday night, and no boy has even hinted that he'd like to take her to the big dance. She wins the school debate with an impassioned plea against drinking, but instead of attracting boys with her brains, she only convinces everyone that her father must be a terrible drunkard. Friends call to suggest Alcoholics Anonymous. Despite Mothers horror at these growing wild stories about her abstemious husband, she's moved by Hildegarde's plight, and she takes action. Mother knows a nice boy, and she's sure he'd love to go with Hildegarde. She calls his mother. Hildegarde, not knowing who he may be, brags to the other girls about her date-only to learn that the boy is Freddie-the one boy in school whose old-fashioned parents force him to wear knickers! Hildegarde pleads with her father to let her break the date, but Father is mad, for everyone is convinced now that he's a great drinker. Furthermore, Freddie is the son of Father's boss. Father, in danger of losing his job at the bank because of all the talk Hilde- garde has started, invites his boss out to the house to see for himself how sane and sensible his family really is. Hildegarde, her face smeared with beau- ty clay, dashes into the room screaming that her Sixty-two brother has put a large live bass in the bathtub. The boss is stunned, all the more so when his son, Freddie, bursts in wearing long pants which he had hooked from Hildegarde's brother. It all looks like the end of everything, and they all turn on Hildegarde, for, one way or another, she's at the bottom of every single disaster. Finally, how- ever, by overthrowing the domination of his mother, Freddie overcomes his inferiority complex and, re- splendent in a new suit-with long pants-he escorts Hildegarde to the long awaited prom. Several different phases of Agriculture were studied and carried on in the Vocational Agricul- ture Classes and F.F.A. during the year to make the experiences of the boys varied and interesting. In August, our team won fifth place in a coun- ty livestock judging contest for 4-H clubs and F.F.A. chapters, in September, they placed ninth out of twenty-two teams in a similar contest at the Clay County Fair at Spencer, and in April, at a four-state contest held at Sioux City, they ranked eighth out of thirty-nine groups, and second among Iowa teams. Five of the group attended and enjoyed the State Fair at Des Moines, four went to Waterloo, to the Dairy Cattle Congressg and five attended the F.F.A. leadership conference held at Laurens. During the winter months the F.F.A. boys played a schedule of nine first team and seven second team basketball games. The first team won seven and lost twog the second team won four and lost three. On April 2, the F.F.A. chapter took part in the Northwest Iowa District Contest held at Poca- hontas. Lawrence Hoefling won a bronze award in the F.F.A. quiz: Donald Peterson was awarded an honorable mention in the Public Speaking eventg and the Parliamentary Procedure team composed of Duane Einspahr, Dallas Rohlf, 'Carol Youngren, Royce Hannel, and Jack Gunderson also took an honorable mention. , Duane Einspahr and Royce Hannel were se- lected as official delegates to the State F.F.A. con- vention held at Cedar Rapids April 21-23. Dallas Rohlf and Carol Youngren, nominated for the de- gree of Iowa Farmers also attended, along with Gerald Huldeen and Daryl Stehr, who played in the State Band, and Irvin Ste-hr, who sang in the State Chorus. The highlight of the school year was reached on April 12, with the holding of the Annual Par- ent-Son dinner. Dallas Rohlf served as toastmaster for this event, with a large majority of the boys and their parents attending. George Dresselhuis was initiated as an honorary chapter farmer during the evening program, Besides these varied activities, the chapter sold refreshments at several of the home basket- ball games, tested seed for the farmers of the com- munity, sold license plate signs, and helped in the finance drive to raise money for the Odebolt 'Com- munity Fair. A pigeon hunt was held during the winter months and a couple of pruning demonstra- tions were held. Officers for the 1948-49 year were: Dallas Rohlf, president: Carol Youngren, vice-presidentg Royce Hannel, secretary: Jack Gunderson, treasur- erg and Charles Gunderson, reporter. The chapter had 32 members, 26 of them high school students and 6 out-of-school youth. In addition to those in the picture, there were Irvin Stehr and Melvin Determann who were enrolled in the schoolg and Austin Babcock, James Scott, Robert Schwaller, Clyde Meyer, Ronald Bloom, and Daryl Stehr, who have graduated.
