In 1986-87, Ronald Reagan served as the President of the United States and Terry Branstad was Iowa's gov- ernor, the youngest state governor in the nation. One of the representatives from Iowa was Fred Grandy, former star of the television series Love Boat. In World politics, Corazon Aquino was elected president of the Philippines. After her husband's murder in 1983, she became the head of the growing anti-Marcos movement, and eventually moved on to the presiden- cy. The Bicentenial of the United States Constitution was also in 1986-87. The social event of the year was the wedding of Prince Andrew of Great Britian and Sarah Ferguson. A popular movie was Top Gun, star- ring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGinnes. In the televi- sion industry, The Cosby Show was voted number one in many polls. Another popular series was Moonlighting starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. The hot car of 1986-87 was the Porsche 911. In clothing trends, mini skirts as well as tea-length dresses made a comeback. The preppie style was in , featuring polo and ivy league shirts, loafers, and boat shoes. Colorful flat shoes for the girls and narrow ties for the boys were popular. Hawaiian-print cloth- ing continued to be in demand. Famous brand names were Pepe, Guess, Swatch, Coca-Cola Clothes, and Reebok. A 1986-87 stamp cost twenty-two cents, a gallon of gas cost ninety-five cents, and a McDonald's Big Mac cost $1.29. The Kansas City Royals won the 1986 World Series and the New York Giants won the 1987 Super Bowl. The Boston Celtics and the Los An- geles Lakers were on top in the National Basketball Association. 1986-87 was an exciting year which was like no other. 3
