Thirteen years ago, the seniors started Kindergarten which was only half days. The five and six-year-olds either walked or rode a minibus to school. They advanced through first grade, skipped through second, learned cursive writing in third, and moved out to the private portable buildings in fourth grade. In the fifth grade, they ruled over the elementary and had a lot more priveleges. The '87 seniors then advanced to the Odebolt-Arthur Middle School in Arthur. For the first time they were able to participate in competitive sports and music events with other schools. The time at OAMS helped them grow and develop and was full of new challenges. Finally, the students were ready for high school. As freshmen they were nervous, but willing to try almost anything. Throughout high school, they were involved in many activities which included sports, music, drama, speech, student government, and of course, academics. Their sophomore and junior years whizzed by and the senior year was upon them. Before the school year of 1986-87 started, the volleyball and football teams had already started practicing in the hot August weather. School started and books were handed out and teachers started to assign. The class officers were elected and the Student Council started to plan Homecoming. In music, the marching band practiced its routines and the vocal department auditioned students for roles in the musical. The seniors were also busy selling magazines to pay for color in the yearbook. The volleyball team traveled to and hosted games on various nights of the week. The members had a lot of team spirit and enthusiasm. The football squad played every Friday night. The games were exciting and well- attended by fans. Homecoming, September 22-26, was a highlight for many of the seniors. It was a week of fun and preparation. The students dressed in Fourth of July, Valentine's Day, Christmas in Hawaii, Easter, and New Year's Day Celebration outfits. Super Class Night threw the grades into competition with one another and the seniors won by a few points. The Bonfire followed which raised the enthusiasm level a lot. On Friday, the day of the big game with Ida Grove, the Coronation took place. First, the candidates rode through town in convertibles and the football team cruised behind on the fire truck. Then came an afternoon filled with skits, cheers, pep talks, and the crowning of Beth Larson and Curt Wareham as Queen and King. That evening, the Trojans beat the Ida Grove Hawks in a rainy game, and celebrated their victory at the dance afterwards. The musical was given on November 8 and 9 and was enjoyed by all. The students involved agreed that the hard work was worth it. Many looked forward to the next drama production. On the sports scene, wrestling and basketball teams competed on Tuesday and Friday nights and had many thrilling games that were close. The wrestling team came to life too and 167 pound Jeff Pick made it to state competition. He received third place there. On April, a comedy was presented by the drama department. Many seniors had parts in the enjoyable play. Also during this time, the vocal and instrumental students were getting ready for small group contest. Many superior I ratings were given to solos, duets, trios, quartets, and other ensembles. Individual speech contest rolled around too. Five speech contestants went to state. The 1987 Prom was held on April 25. The theme was This Is The Time and the colors were pink and black. The sophomores served the banquet, which was held at the Community Building in Arthur. Following the meal, there was a dance in the multipurpose room, a movie in Ida Grove, and bowling in Odebolt. The track teams were very successful this year. They sent five events to the state meet, the girls’ shuttle hurdle team, the boys' 4x100, 4x200, and two long jump events. The golf team learned a lot this year. Many golfers practiced at Spring Lake to get ready for the meets. Finishing up the year for music was the Rockwell City Large-Group Contest. The Chorus and Band both received II ratings. Graduation was a great culmination to the 1986-87 year. Now, after years of hard work, the seniors were finished with high school. 17
