One of the representatives from Iowa was Fred Grandy, former star of the television series Love Boat. In World politics, Corazon Aquino was elected president of the Philippines. After her husband's murder in 1983, she became the head of the growing anti-Marcos movement, and eventually moved on to the presiden- cy. The Bicentenial of the United States Constitution was also in 1986-87. The social event of the year was the wedding of Prince Andrew of Great Britian and Sarah Ferguson. A popular movie was Top Gun, star- ring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGinnes. In the televi- sion industry, The Cosby Show was voted number one in many polls. Another popular series was Moonlighting starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. The hot car of 1986-87 was the Porsche 911. In clothing trends, mini skirts as well as tea-length dresses made a comeback. The preppie style was in , featuring polo and ivy league shirts, loafers, and boat shoes. Colorful flat shoes for the girls and narrow ties for the boys were popular. Hawaiian-print cloth- ing continued to be in demand. Famous brand names were Pepe, Guess, Swatch, Coca-Cola Clothes, and Reebok. A 1986-87 stamp cost twenty-two cents, a gallon of gas cost ninety-five cents, and a McDonald's Big Mac cost $1.29. The Kansas City Royals won the 1986 World Series and the New York Giants won the 1987 Super Bowl. The Boston Celtics and the Los An- geles Lakers were on top in the National Basketball Association. 1986-87 was an exciting year which was like no other. 3 4 M. Schwanz Imhoff, P. Lindner, 11. The council planned it and added some new ideas to the custom. One was the Holiday Inn idea, where each day of Homecoming week was a different holiday. The stu- dents dressed accordingly and symbolic prizes were given in connection with the days. To raise money for their expenses, the Stu- dent Council gave a pan- cake supper before a bas- ketball game. Following the game, the annual Christmas dance was spon- sored by the council. The members gave their input on After-Prom activities too. The Student Council helped make this school year a special one to re- member. The FFA was very busy this year with meetings, contests, and their annual duties. The members spon- sored a breakfast during Homecoming. They all worked hard and enjoyed serving the public at this event. Their annual dinner was held in the spring for the members, their par- ents, and their families. Parliamentary procedure was followed so the guests could see what an FFA meeting is like. On Valen- tine's Day they sponsored the annual FFA Sweetheart Dance. Maren Bergman was chosen as the FFA Sweetheart for 1987. J| Linda Arbegast Michael Cerizo Maren K. Turin Colby Waldemar Curtis James Wareham Thirteen years ago, the seniors started Kindergarten which was only half days. The five and six-year-olds either walked or rode a minibus to school. They advanced through first grade, skipped through second, learned cursive writing in third, and moved out to the private portable buildings in fourth grade. In the fifth grade, they ruled over the elementary and had a lot more priveleges. The '87 seniors then advanced to the Odebolt-Arthur Middle School in Arthur. For the first time they were able to participate in competitive sports and music events with other schools. The time at OAMS helped them grow and develop and was full of new challenges. Finally, the students were ready for high school. As freshmen they were nervous, but willing to try almost anything. Throughout high school, they were involved in many activities which included sports, music, drama, speech, student government, and of course, academics. Their sophomore and junior years whizzed by and the senior year was upon them. Before the school year of 1986-87 started, the volleyball and football teams had already started practicing in the hot August weather. School started and books were handed out and teachers started to assign. The class officers were elected and the Student Council started to plan Homecoming. In music, the marching band practiced its routines and the vocal department auditioned students for roles in the musical. The seniors were also busy selling magazines to pay for color in the yearbook. The volleyball team traveled to and hosted games on various nights of the week. The members had a lot of team spirit and enthusiasm. The football squad played every Friday night. The games were exciting and well- attended by fans. Homecoming, September 22-26, was a highlight for many of the seniors. It was a week of fun and preparation. The students dressed in Fourth of July, Valentine's Day, Christmas in Hawaii, Easter, and New Year's Day Celebration outfits. Super Class Night threw the grades into competition with one another and the seniors won by a few points. The Bonfire followed which raised the enthusiasm level a lot. On Friday, the day of the big game with Ida Grove, the Coronation took place. First, the candidates rode through town in convertibles and the football team cruised behind on the fire truck. Then came an afternoon filled with skits, cheers, pep talks, and the crowning of Beth Larson and Curt Wareham as Queen and King. That evening, the Trojans beat the Ida Grove Hawks in a rainy game, and celebrated their victory at the dance afterwards. The musical was given on November 8 and 9 and was enjoyed by all. The students involved agreed that the hard work was worth it. Many looked forward to the next drama production. On the sports scene, wrestling and basketball teams competed on Tuesday and Friday nights and had many thrilling games that were close. The wrestling team came to life too and 167 pound Jeff Pick made it to state competition. He received third place there. On April, a comedy was presented by the drama department. Many seniors had parts in the enjoyable play. Also during this time, the vocal and instrumental students were getting ready for small group contest. Many superior I ratings were given to solos, duets, trios, quartets, and other ensembles. Individual speech contest rolled around too. Five speech contestants went to state. The 1987 Prom was held on April 25. The theme was This Is The Time and the colors were pink and black. The sophomores served the banquet, which was held at the Community Building in Arthur. Following the meal, there was a dance in the multipurpose room, a movie in Ida Grove, and bowling in Odebolt. The track teams were very successful this year. They sent five events to the state meet, the girls’ shuttle hurdle team, the boys' 4x100, 4x200, and two long jump events. The golf team learned a lot this year. Many golfers practiced at Spring Lake to get ready for the meets. Finishing up the year for music was the Rockwell City Large-Group Contest. The Chorus and Band both received II ratings. Graduation was a great culmination to the 1986-87 year. Now, after years of hard work, the seniors were finished with high school. 17 TV 4 : . - Rohlf K. Robbins S. Stone T. Waliemar Finian's Rainbow was an all- school musical presented No- vember 8 and 9, 1986. Mrs. McDonough and Mr. Susemihl directed the comical story, as- sisted by Carla Carlson, student director, and Dorothy Purdy, ac- companist. Major roles were portrayed by Derick Cranston, Beth Larson, Heather Turin, Dean Spencer, and Colby Wal- demar. Ten fifth graders helped make the show a success. The play told the story of an Irish immigrant named Finian who had tne idea of getting rich in America with a pot of gold. However, the leprechaun who Finian borrowed'' the crock of gold from, wanted it back. Shar- on, Finian's daughter, fell in love with a local boy who lived in Rainbow Valley, Missitucky, where the musical took place. Senator Rawkins, a bigotted southerner, wanted to rid the land of all black and white shar- ecroppers. In his attempt, he learned first-hand what being black is like. The Spring all-school produc- tion was Harvey . The three act comedy was about a gigantic imaginary rabbit named Harvey. Various characters thought that they saw Harvey and because of this they were labeled as crazy. Students with large parts were Beth Larson, Richard Dub- linske, C. Profit, Derrick Cran- ston, Heather Turin, P. Lindner, and Dean Spencer. The play was directed by Mrs. McDonough, Stacey Profit, and several super- visors. It was enjoyed by all. 58 Ten students went to district speech con- test this year in various categories, such as Prose, Humorous Acting, Storytelling, Radio and News Broadcasting, Poetry, and Public Address. Five O-A contes- tants advanced on to state competition by earning “I ratings. They were Danae Olson, Marni Schwanz, Patty Paulson, Michelle Schrieber, and Beth Larson. At the state level, Danae Olson, Patty Paul- son, and Michelle Schrieber recieved I ratings. Mrs. McDonough coached the students. Lots of hard work was put into the contest through early morning prac- tices, memorizing, and working on things like facial expression and tone quality. 59 The vocal music department had a busy year. It started out in the fall with a musical. Finian's Rain- bow was presented in November involving almost all of the vocal students, plus others. Students worked very hard as actors, actresses, crew person- nel, or both! It was a successful run and enjoyed by all. This year's All-State quartet consisted of Jodie Rohlf, Beth Larson, Doug Dublinske, and Dean Spencer. Seven students were selected for North- west Iowa Honor Choir. They were Channing Prof- it, Jodie Rohlf, Karla Lansink, Heather Turin, Matt Evans, Dean Spencer, and Jim Hansen. State Solo and Small Ensemble Music Contest was hosted by Odebolt-Arthur H.S. this year. Out of 22 vocal entries, we received 8 I ratings, 9 II ratings, and 5 III ratings on a five-point scale. Our last contest was State Large Group contest held in Rockwell City. Four concerts were presented this year: The Christmas Concert, Fine Arts Festival, the Swing Show, and Graduation. We had a 12- member swing choir who sang at various activities, concerts, and the USD Swing Choir Festival. 62 Despite the rainy fall weather, the O- A Trojan Marching Band had a suc- cessful season. The band performed at halftime for five home football games, and also participated at the State Marching Band Contest held this year in Ames. Marching in a steady downpour, the band brought home an excellent II rating. Five in- strumentalists went to Northwest Iowa Honor Band at Morningside. They were Carla Carlson, Beth Lar- son, Heather Turin, Kathy Thayer, and Stephanie Hotle. The Concert Band performed at various concerts during the year including the Christ- mas Concert, Fine Arts Festival, and Graduation. The group was also kept busy with State Large Group Contest held in Rockwell City and State Small Group Contest, which was hosted by Odebolt-Arthur this year. The jazz band also participated in contests and improved steadily with each one. 63 H.
