AN OLYMPIC YEAR Bo Derek became the newest sex symbol with cornrowed hair. Pittsburg Steelers won Super Bowl XIV with a 31-19 victory over the Rams. USC beat Ohio State 17-16 in the Rose Bowl. Pittsburg Pirates won the World Series over the Ori- oles. Genuine Risk became the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 65 years. Capping a crazy NCAA Basketball Tourn., Louisville and Darrel Griffith came from behind to defeat UCLA and win their first 1980 Winter Olympics were held at Lake Placid, New York. A young U.S. hockey team came from nowhere to win the gold medal with victories over Sweden, Czech., Soviet Union, and Finland. Goalie Jim Craig was the hero of the hockey games. Tai Babilonia Randy Gardner, pairs figure skaters, had to withdraw from competition, leaving the gold to Soviets Rod- nina and Zaitsev. Iowa's Fabulous Few finished 4th in the NCAA Tourn. Eric Heiden won a record 5 gold medals in speed skating at distances ranging from 500 to 10,000 meters. John Paul II became 1st Pope to ever visit the U.S. stopping in

IRANIAN STUDENTS TAKE HOSTAGES Iran elects new president, Banisadr. Ted Kennedy runs for the Democratic nomination against Pres. Carter in 1980. Margaret Thatcher was elected as Great Britain's first Prime Minister. Best Actor award went to Dustin Hoffman, and best support- ing actor went to Meryl Streep. Best Actress award went to Norma Rae. Kramer vs. Kramer swept Academy Awards. In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Carter de- cides to boycott the Summer Olympics at Moscow. Ronald Reagan seeks the Republican nomination for presi dent. Ayatullah Khomeini returned from exile to lead a revolution in Iran and overthrow the Shah who fled to the U.S. Americans in the U.S. Embassy were taken hostage by Iranian students de- manding the Shah's return. Pres. Carter refused, however, and hopes of release are quite remote.
