Bauer CONCERT The O-A Symphonic Band has been very active this past school year. The band pre- sented a Christmas concert on December 20, a Pop's Concert of January 31. Mr. Jack Ryan of Spencer was our guest conductor on March 6. The highlight of the year was the guest ap- pearance of the band at the 27th Annual Uni- versity of South Dakota Instrumental Clinic at Vermillion on February 21. Odebolt-Arthur was the only band invited from Iowa. It was a great experience for everyone. Thf band will be going for its consecutive division 1 at large group contest which will be hosted by Odebolt-Arthur. The last appear- ance will be for commencement excercises and Memorial Day services. Percussion Section: Left to right: R. Flink, S. Miller, R. Sorensen, M Gronemeyer, B. Tiefenthaler, S. BAND s: THREE IN A ROW The Odebolt- Arthur Marching Tro- jans had continuing success during the 1977-78 school year. The band con- sisted of 64 players, and Mary Bauer as majorette. The band overcame the weather to perform at only two football games. The other two games were rained out, as was the Homecoming Parade. Precision drill and modified corp marching were the main ingredients of the band shows. All music was memorized to add showmanship and style. The trumpets were featured in the opening entry to Rocky. The band utilized the entire field from end zone to end zone. The flags were featured in Here's That Rainy Day. The band did a precision drill to The Incredible Baron Von Rip Em Off. The highlight of the marching sea- son was receiving our 3rd consecutive Division 1 rating in the State Class B Marching Band Contest. 0-A The O-A Jazz Band completed an outstanding year. The 1978 edition of the band was unveiled in January at the Pop's Concert playing three new charts. The first one was 1 'Broken Promise'', which featured Diane Flogstad on alto sax. The number was also a great ensemble piece and let the band demonstrate their versatility. The second chart was the sensitive ' 'Send in the Clown''. This number started with a piano solo by Deb Mesenbrink and was joined by the trombone section and rhythm. The solo feature in the 'Clowns' was Nate Kitterman on trumpet. The last number and the favorite of the band was ' 'Corozon''. This featured Rhonda Haefner on alto sax. It was the most powerful of the three numbers and gave every section a chance to be heard. The band competed at four festivals. They were at Momingside Jazz Festival in Sioux City, Wayne State Jazz Fes- tival in Wayne, Nebraska, (placed first), Hoover Jazz Festival in Des Moines (placed second and participated in the evening finals), U.S.D. Coyote Jazz Festival at Vermillion, South Dakota, (placed third). The highlight of the year was qualifying for the Iowa Jazz Championships for the second time in the last three years. The band also had outstanding Jazz Soloists. Nate Kitterman and Mark Gronemeyer received an outstanding Jazz Soloists award at Wayne. Mark also was named the outstanding rhythm player for the entire festival. Rhonda Haefner, Diane Flogstad and Nate received outstanding soloists award at the Coyote Festival. The last appearance of the band was at the Jazz and Swing Show, May 9, closing out the year for many talented and deserving young people. JAZZ MIXED CHORUS Front Row: M. Pearson, L. Hoaglund, T. After a slow beginning the Harmony Congregation first per- formed at the Pop's Concert. In March they participated in a con- test held at USD in Vermillion and later that month in a festival- clinic held at Onawa. They also performed for the Swing Show. There were three seniors in the group that have all been very ac- tive for their entire high school career. Kris, Lori, and Randy have been outstanding in this group all four years and have been among the leaders within the group. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THREE KINDS The annual Pop's Concert this year was called the ' 'Close ncounters of the Three Kinds.'' The first encounter was the ymphonic band playing the difficult and challenging Starwars'', another first encounter was the O-A Jazz play- ng ' 'Broken Promise,'' ' 'Send in the Clowns'' and ' 'Coro- on. The second encounter consisted of the Mixed Chorus sing- og Lennon McCartney Selections and All His Children, the iris Glee performing ' 'Winter Wonderland'' and ' 'Where is he Love.'' The Harmony Congregation finished the second ncounter by performing ' 'Happy Heart,'' ' 'My Sweet ady, '' and ' 'Sweet Sixteen.'' The third encounter was the O-A Art Fair, a new attrac- ion to the Pop's Concert this year. IT’S CARNIVAL TIME! The Odebolt-Arthur Music Boosters held a carnival on Febru- ary 9, to help raise money for the new band uniforms. There was a steady stream of people making rounds through the carnival. There were various games of chance, a cakewalk, bingo, a space walk, clowns, movies, and food sold throughout the evening. Over $1,100 was raised and ev- erybody had fun and took many prizes home. SXN3A3 3T9VH0]A[3]A[ The events were blind- folded football passing, scooter balloon relay, fris- bee throwing, tractor tube relay, girl's and boy's tug o' war, scooter basketball shooting, pyramid building, hippety hbp relay, hot shots, and the obstacle course. At the end of the events, the Sophomore Class tallied the most points and were, therefore, presented with the Super Class trophy of 1978. Next, members of the Middle School and High School classes competed for the title of '' Super Class of the Year.'' I y ft c I fjp Dunng February OAHS students became involved in mini courses. There were various courses to choose from such as ball- room dancing, ping - pong, furniture refinishing, cake decorating, words and games, volleyball, and many others. The mini courses were taught by teachers and vol- unteers of the community and each consisted of eight sessions. The courses turned out to be very successful, and ev- eryone enjoyed them and had a great time. HOMECOMING Have you ever imagined a perfect homecoming ? We had one! All during the week the school prepared for homecoming with many activities. Blowing bubbles, casting votes, skit night, the bonfire, pep rally, dressing up, and wearing bibs were just a few of the activities students were involved in to build up enthusiasm. On Thursday, October 6, the Queen and King were crowned at Skit Night. Kris Hemer was crowned Queen, and Bill Fertig was crowned King. Their attendants were Kathy Miller, Peggy Rex, Judy Sweeden, and Cindy Thies for Queen and Kurt Carstensen, Bret Iversen, Dan Kennedy, and Nate Kitterman for King. The kindergarten attendants were Toni Reis, and Michael Thayer. u n Thanks to the student council, cheer- leaders, marching band, and many oth- er important people, the week went by a little bit better. All helped make it one of the best homecomings ever by all of the arranged activities and pepraisers for the students. The frosting on the cake was spread by the football boys who gave us a victory over Woodbury-Central. Now isn't that what Homecoming is all about? ! ! A roster of 29 players and a dozen squad managers combined their talents and teamwork enroute to four hard-fought victories against a single defeat. The lone blemish on the Trojan record came at the hands of Ida Grove's undefeat- ed Hawks. Early friends and foes in the long life ahead to be remembered well. It's a sad time, It's a glad time, But its time to say good-bye. Good-bye to all the fun we've had, all the heartaches, struggles and the laughter, the learning and the earning, the punishment, the madness, the gladness and the crying. Good-bye, farewell, so long. We're no longer under another's wings. Set free into the world we must cope. It may be hard for we know not what comes. We have our hopes and dreams to help us. Then again, it may be easy. We must make our own destiny. We have had thirteen years of knowledge put into our heads, Thank you, we shall use it. In kindergarten, 73 kids boldly marched in the door School went by like a flash, Then we were sixth graders, Elementary no more. Through the Middle School we did roam we were so cool, until the end of eighth grade- Then back to the high school and itsy-bitsy freshman, scared to say boo. Sophomores, juniors and our first prom. Then the big event, our Senior year soon to be nevermore our Class of ' '78 still so much left to do Decisions of futures and what else but ... time to greet the world. Good-bye, farewell, so long.
