The bonfire! Above the crackling of the fire could be heard the voices of Odebolt-Arthur stu- dents as they inspired the Trojans for the big game the following night. Sherry Sweeden and Coach Wine added to the enthusiasm with their pep talks. Display winners were announced, first place went to the Class of '76. Afterwards everyone went home to rest for the big day ahead. 28 1974 The was filled with eagerness as everyone anxiously awaited the corwning. The cheerleaders brough the crowd alive with the help of the marching band and a pep talk by Doc Page. 29 Ode bolt-Arthur's 1974 Royalty and its court. Queen --Sherry Sweeden and King--Gary Siebrecht. The candi- dates of the court were Vicki Korner, Russ Page, Pat Rex, Tim Peis, Cathy Schroeder, Alan Siebrecht. At last everyone knew! The suspense was over! The only mystery that remained was that of the big game. Could the Trojans defeat the Rebels? 30 On the line! Excitement! The Time was here, the O-A fans avidly supported their Trojans, and the Trojans didn't disappoint them. Even though Westwood proved too much for them, they never gave up. Final score; Trojans 12--Rebels 16. Concluding the Homecoming festivities was a dance. Federal Reserve provided the music. During the dance the Student Council honored the class of 1925. Everybody had a good time, maybe they were just un- winding from the hectic, but fun week that had just pass- ed. 31 JR.-SR. PROM On the evening of April nineteenth, nineteen hun- dred and seventy-five, the Junior Class presented the Jr.-Sr. Prom entitled Time in a Bottle . This year the Prom was held at the Spring Lake Country Club which was enjoyed by everyone. Everyone attending, gathered first in the basement for punch and visited while they waited to be ushered upstairs for the banquet. The dinner prepared by the Country Club consisted of: Mellow Yellow (punch); We've Only Just Begun (sal- ad bar); Thank God I'm a Country Boy (ham); Rocky Mountain High (baked potato and sour cream); Sunshine on My Shoulders (buttered corn); Jam Up and Jelly Tight (rolls and butter); Shaving Cream (dessert) and Black Water (coffee). Following the dinner, Curtis Larson, Jr. Class President, presented the Welcome, and Sherry Sweeden, Sr. Class President, responded. Sue Veit introduced the class officers and sponsors. Miss Berg, our guest speaker, presented her theme EMIT : time spelled backwards. Closing the program a Jr. Octet sang Time in a Bottle . The music for the dance was provided by Kickin Bird and was enjoyed by students and faculty. After the dance, many students attended the movie Towering Inferno , at Ida Grove. The event was ended by a breakfast at the Dinges Hotel. With the new scenery and formal atmosphere, the prom was a great success. 32 “TIME IN A 33 JUNIOR CLASS PLA Y The Junior Class, this year, chose a new and modern three act comedy, BUT- TER ON THE BACON , as their Junior Class Play. The play was presented on Satur- day, April 5. BUTTER ON THE BACON , even though designed as a comedy, presented a realistic problem that might occur in a modern American family. Jerry , the teen- age son was supposedly selected as the All American Teenager . The resulting pub- licity and dreams of sudden wealth flowing into the family finances, brought an entire new way of life to the eager family. Grandiose plans were made on the basis of the expected royalties, public appearance fees and expected huge profits from Jerry Brennan Enterprises . The lesson in the play was all too true! Jerry, and family, was the victim of-a slick con man. In the words of the Internal Revenue man, who of course, learned of the good fortune quickly, there never were any electronically selected computer cards and there never was an All American Teen-Age Boy . The manner in which the family decided that normal living was best after all was a satisfying conclusion to the complications of the play. Cast members were: Curtis Larson, Scott Ogren, Kelli Fries, Sheila Dinges, Mary Carstensen, Bob Fineran, Joan Pick, Gwen Huldeen. Debbie Horsley, Mike Klus. Jeff Krayenhagen, Julie Oxendale, Terri Johannsen, and Randy Thies. Kris Ken- nedy and Davett Maples assisted Mr. Waterbury in the directing of the play. 34 “BUTTER ON THE BACON 35 “CARNIVAL ALL SCHOOL MUSICAL The all school musical, under the direction of Miss Nadine Johnson, Director of Vocal Music and Mr. Waterbury, Dir- ector of Dramatics, was presented two nights, November 8 9. This year the Music and Drama departments presented CARNIVAL . Carnival is the story of a homeless waif who wanders into a rather broken down carnival. She became intrigued with the Carnival life and tried desperately to become a member of the performing groups. Carnival production required elaborate staging, with a number of specialty acts, dancing routines, a magician, tra- peze performers and of course a number of solo, duet and choral numbers. Many hours of work were involved, with the Dramatics class building the sets and working out various specialty acts. The Vocal music department, especially soloists and mixed chorus were responsible for the musical numbers. Lead parts in both singing and acting were performed by Barb Viet and Randy Bentzen, Barb as Lily the homeless waif and Randy as Paul Berthelet the Puppeteer. Scott Ogren and Gwen Huldeen also had lead parts as Marco, the Magni- ficent , the Magician and Gwen as Rosalie the Magician's helper. Other main parts were played and sung by, Alan Siebrecht, Marvin Willey, Kelli Fries, and Lisa Landgraf, Mary Carstensen, Jane Hammerstrom and Kris Hansen as the singing puppets. Other specialty numbers involved the Strong Man , Randy Franken, Trapeze performers, Dave Wilken and Kay Fries, and a juggling act by Barb Tunink and Barb Bettin. The musical played to a full house on both nights and presented another outstanding performance. Mrs. Dorothy Purdy, must be given special recognition for her skilled contribution as our accompanist for both the theme and songs of the production. 36 37 The O-A Chapter sponsored their annual Sweetheart Dance on Friday evening February 14th. A large gathering showed up to hear the Omaha rock group Eclipse which played an excellent variety of popular tunes. Selection of Sweetheart was somewhat different this year. The FFA members nominated two girls from each class to vie for Sweetheart honors. Those candidates were: freshmen--Lori Schroeder, Cindy Thies; sophomores--Kim Beckman, Deb Simonson; juniors--Joan Pick, Sue Veit; seniors--Sherry Sweeden, Vicki Korner. Containers for each candidate were set up in the high school as students deposited penny-votes for their favorite sweet- heart during the week before the dance. As dance time drew near, the votes were counted and Sherry Sweeden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sweeden was presented with a trophy and roses as she was named the 1975 O-A FFA Sweetheart. DRAMATICS First Row: Joan Pick, Mike Klus, Deb Horsley, Alan Siebrecht, Terri Johannsen, Davett Maples, and Cathy Schroeder, Se- cond Row: Gwen Huldeen, Sheila Dinges, Pat Rex, Magnus Hankanson, Dixie Thevenot, Gary Simon, Randy Franken, Mike Konradi, Jeff Krayenhagen, Randy Thies,Janet Bengford, Dave Wilken, and Gary Siebrecht. The formal dramatics class has the major responsibility for dramatic productions in high school. Participation in these activities is not limited only to this class how- ever. Any student may participate in our various activities if they so desire. An all school musical is our first production of the year. This year the vocal music department and drama students produced Carnival . The dramatic class students participated in the state large group division enter- ing in Readers Theater and Choral Reading. In the district contest at Cherokee, in January, the Choral Reading group presented A Living Place and received a 1 rating, enabling them to participate in the state finals. The group received a n rating in the state contest. The Readers Theater group received a II in the district contest. This class also presented three one-act plays for public performance early in March. This year the plays given were the The Box Collector , The Open Window , and A Thing of Beauty . The final dramatic production of the school year is always the junior class play presented in early April. This year the juniors presented a three act comedy Butter on the Bacon . 40 STUDENT COUNCIL Front Row: Mr. Kerns, Vicki Korner, Mary Carstensen, Deb Simonson, Kim Sievers. The student council is made up of representatives and senators elected from each high school class. This year the activities of the council included sponsoring Homecoming and a St. Patrick’s Day dance. The council worked at promoting better faculty-student communication through the sponsoring of two faculty-student rap sessions. In addi- tion, the council helped plan mini courses, were primarly responsible in the schedul- ing of three student assemblies, and sponsored days as Gripe Day and a Fifties' Day. They also plan to conduct a five-school student council workshop seminar in the spring of '75. Their primary function is to serve the student body and to work toward improving general citizenship among the students. 41 trojan Volume 26 Thursday. Some interest events were: the FFA Sweetheart Dance, Ho me- in g: the winning display by the Jun- ior Class, as well as die Royal Court, the Junior-Senior Prom, a poll taken by the student coun- cil, the jazz band winning first at two big contests, play by play action of the scrimmage be- tween the O-A Trojans and the Sac City Indians, the St. Patrick's Dance for which the Establishment played that even- ing. Deadlines! That's the number one word of any yearbook staff. This year the Tro- jan Staff worked long, hard hours trying to put out the best annual ever. Editors Deb Etler and Sherry Sweeden were kept busy making lay-outs and organizing committees. In the fall, Mr. Wiese and three members of the staff attended a workshop in the fall. There they chose a cover and learned some of the do's and don't's of yearbook making. Once again, our two editors attended a workshop in Ames, which was held during the summer. There they picked up many ideas to improve the annual. Putting an annual together is a big job. It demands a lot of time and effort, but in the end, it's worth it! P. S. Thanks Mr. Wiese! 43 FFA The O-A FFA Chapter was very busy during the 1974-75 school year. The livestock judging team worked hard during the summer months and finally captured the team championship at the Clay County Fair in Spencer. A memorable hayride was held with the Home Ec. girls. Many members helped dig and plant trees from the chapter nursery for the Odebolt community. Mr. Kearney and six members attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. The corn from our 12 acres of chapter plots was harvested with a noted yield decrease due to dry summer weather. Area citizens were once again treated to excellent oranges, grapefruit, and apples as local members sold 700 boxes of fruit. Kevin Carstensen, a 1972 graduate, applied for the highest FFA degree possible--the American Farmer Degree. Many members helped publicize our activities during National FFA week in February. Chapter members took part in many Dis- trict Contests this year. The parliamentary procedure team received a bronze award; public speaking—participation; creed speaking—gold and bronze manual quiz-gold; Reporter's scrapbook--gold to state; Secretary's book--gold; Treasurer's book --gold. Seedling trees were planted in the area in April and many seed germination tests were run at no charge for our local farmers. Fourteen members attended the State FFA Convention in Sioux City as Danel Simonson received the Iowa Farmer De- gree. Jack Bair was also a candidate for a state FFA office. After a pot-luck banquet in May the chapter members geared up to get the corn crop in and another year off to a successful start. 44 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Seated left to right: Pat Rex, Vicki Komer, Matt Thevenot, Miss Berg. The critieria for selection of the honor students was based upon scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Eight high school faculty members voted by secret ballot to select the students to be invited to join the local chapter. The Odebolt Rotary Club sponsored the dinner preceding the initiation and have presented each member with the Na- tional Honor Society pin. An important project of the year was to give volunteer service to the elementary teachers. Another project was a mon- etary contribution to the carpeting in the high school library. The Trojanette's 5 losses came by a combined total of just 14 runs as the gals provided stiff competition in every outing. The purple and Gold offensive machine proved to be one of the finest in Northwest Iowa averaging 15 runs per game while slugging the ball at a super .360 Team Batting Average. Jam Hemer led a fine defensive club with a very strong arm at shortstop in earning a berth on the A11-Conference Squad. Offensively, Kris Hemer paced the Trojanettes with a very respectable .520 Batting Average (25 of 50), 9 Homeruns, 4 RBI’s, amd 33 Runs Scored while other top hitters were Jan Hemer with .441, Cathy Schroder .382, Danel Simonson .362, and Barb Tunink .353. Marcy Sweeden and Danel Simonson played fine defensive ball for 0-A as they made only 2 and 3 errors respectively for the entire season. 58 BASEBALL The Trojan's finished their 1974 summer campaign with an overall record of eight wins and seven losses. Four O-A players made the 1974 All-Conference Team, Jack Bair: first team outfielder; Kent Schroeder: first team infielder; Dave Wilken: first team utility; Dennis Kelly: Honorable mention pitcher. They ended their season play with five wins and 1 loss. The only blemish on their record coming at the hands of Eastwood during the first game of the season as the Trojans lost 2-0 by a safety. Their conquered foes included Holstein (14-0). Crestland (32-18), Ida Grove (40-0), Lake View-Auburn (8-6), and Schleswig (28-6). This year's interior line did an exceptional job of moving the defense and opening holes for the Trojan backs to scam- per through. Leading the way up front were Lance Garlock, Dan Thayer, Randy Gonnerman, Mike Bernhardt, and Randy Bentsen. Defense was a big factor in the 5 and 1 season, as the Trojans gave up only 745 yards and 32 points, while their offense rolled up nearly 1100 yards and scored 122 points. Leading the Trojans in tackles were Steve Hansen, Dan Thayer, Bret Iversen, Dale Siebrecht, Tony Hoelscher, and Rick Schroeder. LEADING INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Att. Yds. In ten meets that had team totals the Trojans finished fourth or better. The highlights of the season being their second place finish in the Trojan Invitational and fourth place medalist team in Class D of the State Cross Run at Ames. The most valuable runner junior John Simpson had the season’s best performance with a ninth place finish in the state meet running the two-mile in 10:36. The Trojans will return a fine group of runners. Hard working junior Brad Gehrke was chosen by his fellow runners as the most improved as he turned in many fine performances. The 1974-75 Trojanette Basketball campaign contained its share of frustration, fun, and good feeling as the purple and gold gals worked their way to a 5 and 13 won -lost record. The O-A Girls performed well in their seven conference games where they turned in a 3-win, 4-loss record in the rugged Maple Valley loop to finish in the Middle of a strong pack. 4 of the State's Top Twenty clubs dotted the year’s schedule, but aggressive play and intense desire kept the Trojanettes within the grasp of victory in most outings. Cathy Schroeder finished a brilliant guard court career at O-A with her name firmly planted in the Trojanette record book for Most Rebounds in one game (20 against Rockwell City). Most Rebounds in one season (206), and Most Steals in one Season (57) while averaging 11.7 rebounds per contest. Barb Tunink's 5.9 game re- bounding average rated second among T-Nettes as she teamed with Schroeder, sopho- more Sweeden, and Junior Jan Davis in the Tough back court. Offensively, Barb Bettin hit 17.4 points per contest in her final season for O-A while freshman Lou Arbegast followed closely with 17.0 points per game to pace the offensive thrust for O-A. Jan and Kris Hemer handled the remaining offensive chores with 8.9 and 5.7 points per game, respectively, while they each led the front court with 4.6 rebounds a contest. 66 i 4 SEASON RECORD O-A Opp. O-A Opp. 21 Avo -Ha -Jamboree 19 61 Wall Lake 70 44 Schleswig 60 26 LV -A 73 28 LV-A 63 62 “West Monona 54 55 “Holstein 68 61 Crestland 53 67 Eastwood 79 63 “KP 68 60 Woodbury Cent. 26 53 “Westwood 47 48 Ida Grove 76 49 Rockwell City 74 40 “Maple Valley 77 56 Lytton (Sect) 58 OT 42 Schaller 57 47 Schaller (Sect) 57 “Conference 67 Lou A rbegast Freshman Forward 17.4 pts. Wrestling at O-A was at low ebb in the team department this year but individual- ly found some outstanding wrestlers in the ranks. Many duals found O-A with a good lead but could not match the experience of the opponents heavier weights and the victory dwindled to defeat. However, as the season progressed much improvement was shown. Russ Page and Steve Hansen provided much of the season leadership and were elected co-captains in post season balloting. Tim Reis was voted most improved wrestler in his effort to keep the team going by advancing to the District Tournament. Best season performances were at the West Harrison Tournament, where O-A up- set many top seeded opponents and placed fourth as a team, and the Maple Valley Conf. Tournament which was hosted by O-A. Four matmen, Russ Page, Jay Hemer, Steve Hansen, and Dan Thayer challenged for the conference crown with Page and Hemer emerging as Conference Champs. It's all parr of our job. This year we were selected by our advisor, Jody Alborn. Everyone was required to do certain cheers and turn a cartwheel. Mid- way through the season, we attended a clinic at Orange City. There we learned various new cheers and chants. Throughout the season we spent our time try- ing to raise school spirit with our pep meetings. Signs and posters were made with the help of Mr. Spradling, the art instructor. Even though our Trojans didn’t beat every team, they were always winners in our eyes. 81 The 1974-1975 wrestling cheerleading squad consisted of Pat Rex--capt., Janet Bengford, Deb Simonson, and Joan Pick. We all worked to- gether to root the team on to both individual and team victories. Ode bolt- -Arthur sponsored the Maple Valley Conference Tournament. We set up a cheerlead- ing lounge for all the cheerleaders from the vi- siting towns. We enjoyed it very much. On March 6, we went along with the wrest- ling team to Sioux City to watch the NAIA Wrestling Tournament at Momingside College. Then on March 19, the wrestling banquet was held. We went with the team to Storm Lake and had dinner at Ken-A -Bobs. Then we all came back to the school for the awards program. The wrestling season was pretty much at an end after that. Next year will be a whole new season to look forward to for the upcoming cheerleaders! 82 Practice! Games! Anxiety! Enthusiasm! Dis- appoint! Happiness! There aren’t enough words to describe the emotions a basketball cheerleader feels. Our sponsor was Jody Alborn. The varsity squad consisted of Sherry Sweeden--capt., Vicki Komer, Terri Johansen, Dixie Thevenot, and Kim Beckman, Kay Fries--capt., Paula Rex, Judy Sweeden, and Peggy Rex made up the Junior Varsity squad. Lori Schroeder served as alternate. Early in the season we attended a clinic at Sac City, where many new chants and cheers were learned. We, the cheerleaders, would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. Spradling for all of his time and help. Also, to Mr. Menage and his pep band. They were great help! 83 Despite very inclement weather, improvement was shown by both the boy's and girl's golf teams. On an individual basis Barb Bettin completed a very successful senior season. She was medalist in both the conference and the sectional tournament and placed 6th in the district meet with a score of 89. As a team the girl's finished with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses and the boy's finished with a record of 1 win and 6 losses. Letterwinners for the girl's are: Barb Bettin, Deb Vaug- hank, Joan Pick, Terri Johannsen, and Jean Tunink. Boy letterwinners are: Dave Wilken, Russ Page, Scott Ogren, and Steve Einsphar. 84 85 8th GRADE Allen Hoagland Tom Hoelscher Mark Horsley Janna Iversen Trudi Johnannsen Gery Krayenhagen Del Krusenstjerna Tim Lamaak Reed Lindgren Nancy Lippincott Becky Lundberg Rodney Marron Connie Anderson Keith Babcock Christie Baker Mary Bauer Kenny Bentsen Lori Bergman Teresa Bernhardt Teresa Bond Diane Breiner Debbie Busskohl Gary Cooper Paul Druivenga Joan Dunkin Randy Fineran Ross Friedrichsen Gale Gar lock Cathy Halboth Greg Healy Don Hemer Duane Herrig 86 CLASS OF '79 Jay Mehrhoff Kent Meyer Jeff Neumann Connie Nissen Terry Oxendale Deanna Paulson Mark Pick Mike Porter Alan Pudenz Karen Pudenz Theresa Pudenz Paul Roeder Paul Rydberg Rodney Schuckel Mary Schroeder Richard Schroeder Elizabeth Schwaller Jeff Scott Bob Sigaty Jeff Simon Rex Stieght Peggy Sokolowski Jim Sorensen John Sorensen Scott Sorensen Sandi Thayer Todd Thompson Curt Tun ink Don Upton Tammy Walemar Melvin Willey Jim Woodin 87 7th GRADE Susan Flogstad Terri Gronau Koreen Haefner John Hoffman Scott Iversen Jon Kerns Sherry Kennedy Mike Klink Lisa McCall Lori McMullen 88 CLASS OF Carna Miller Shari Peterson Pam Porter Joan Pudenz Debi Raff Ronnie Rasmussen Daryl Reeves Ted Reis Sheila Ricke Brenda Schwaller Jim Schwaller Rita Siebrecht Teresa Skaren Patty Sweeden Brent Tiefenthaler Robin Upton Sandy Veit Linda Wallace Tracy Wareham Malla Willey 89 6th GRADE Lori Anderson Jodie Arbegast Barry Baker Danny Bengford Rose Bengford Mike Bettin Pat Bettin Dennis Biederman Brian Fineran Larry Fineran Rodney Flogstad Guy Fremont Charles Gunderson Mary H enter Craig Herrig Debbie LaGrange Brian Lavelle Tonya Lindner Elizabeth Hoaglund Ronda Horsley Toby Johnson Lisa Kerns Mike Krayenhagen 90 CLASS OF ’ Kristin Lorenzen Brenda Lundberg Jay Meyer Linda Miller Steve Miller Jim Nelson Karen Neumann Lori Oxendale Julie Paulsen Donna Paulson Danny Schwaller James Schwanz John Scott Dave Simonson Tracy Skaren Ron Sorensen Jeff Schluter Pam Stehr Terry Sweeden Ricky Thies David Tiefenthaler Jeff Tunink Monte Willey 91 PERFECT SEASON MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS PERFECT SEASON ON GRIDIRON For the second time in Middle School history, the young Trojans worked their way past all five rugged opponents for an unblemished 5-0 record in 1974.
