No more will we have to walk up and down the old wooden flights of stairs, we will pace through polished corridors to reach our classes and rehearsals. Gone will be the sight of students shivering from the cold walk between buildings. The second graders will no longer recite to the accompaniment from the music room below. The new music room will be soundproof. But we have some fond memories of this structure which has served us so well. Here we have our roots, here we first learned to write, read, and get along with others, here whole new worlds opened to us through our histories and geographies. Yes, we have our memories, good and bad, but in order to retain a more permanent record, we, the class of l957 have prepared this yearbook. We hope, that by this means we may make remembronces of O. H. S. more precious and more enduring. --three- 'DISHESI WHO ME? Susan, her eighteen- year-old daughter, is very much against the plan, but Abby sees no other way to obtain money to see her daughter through college, lt isn't until they reach Pointer, however, that the fun begins. Bobo Jackson, campus big-shot, and his young friends are smitten with Abby's mature beauty, much to the dismay of Susan and her friends. To top it all, Abby becomes romantically involved with Professor Michaels, idol of all the girls on campus and particular friend of Susan Abbott. Susan is determined to break up the romance and disapproving Dean Gillingham, who suspects a publicity stunt, is determined to expel Abby from Pointer. Many amusing situations result and the solution is a charming one. SKIP DAY Thirty-five Seniors, accompanied by class sponsors Berg and Shaw, and all a bit sleepy after a night-long train ride, arrived at Chicago's Northwestern Railway Station on Monday morning, May l3. From there they were whirled oft to see the sights of the Windy City, which included the Museum of Science and lndustry, Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Park Zoo, Chinatown, Hull l-louse, Madison Street Skid Row, Grant Park, Midway Ploisance, University of Chicago Campus, downtown financial and theatrical districts, State Street, and Chicago's famous skyline as viewed from Lake Shore Drive. Their meals were provided at the Gateway Restaurant of the Northwestern Station. Worn out from the very full day of sight-seeing, souvenir hunting, and picture taking, the Seniors went to sleep promptly on the return trip. They arrived in Odebolt, tired but happy, in time to attend Tuesday's classes. Hey the,-e down fhereg Who's winning Info the Sub- On the tour. . ,V Wm.. QQUQ'-1 s i xi Q at vias? JUNIGR - SENIOR BANQUET Friday, April 26, the Juniors, Seniors and faculty members w ere escorted by elves and prixies into an enchanting land of make-believe. Multi-colored cardboard butterflies fluttered from the blue crepe-paper sky, and jolly cardboard elves cavorted in a game of leap-frog over toad stools. Organ music by a good fairy lRosalie Neutzmanl was enjoyed throughout the fairyland supper, and, to make the fantasy complete, there was a wishing well. The elves and prixies served their honored guests well, because soon everyone was replete and well-content. An evening of enter- tainment, the fairy queen lSandra Higbyl announced, was then in store for them. A royal command performance was given by some little people from fairyland. The fairy queen then decree-d a royal ball and everyone danced to the music of the Rhythm Hawks from Ida Grove. But finally the clock struck twelve and the guests were forced to come back to earth. They left with a little fairyland Stardust still clingin to th d - g em an the memory of that delightful evening will remain with them for a long time, -eighteen- AWARDS DINNER 6:30 TUESDAY, MAY I4 HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM Spansored by Rotary Club, Businessmen and Friends PROGRAM lnvocgtion ,.,,.......- --, ,...... The student body then marched downtown to display their enthusiasm to the businessmen and patrons. At the game in the evening Audrey Cowlham and Othel Johnson were crowned Queen and King of '56. The Royal Court consisted of Gloria Girvan, Nancy Neville, Judy Ogden, Bonnie Snyder, Jim l-loward, Grant Langle, Clifford Schroeder, and Don Taylor. All Seniors, they were elected by popular vote. Crown bearers were Dean Bengford and Sharon Gronemeyer. Moville didn't quite succeed in dousing our good spirits since the evening was successfully climaxed by a homecoming dance in the gym to the music of Johnny Galvin, Credit is due to the marching ban-d and the committee in charge, who spent long hours in preparation for the event. Members of the committee were: Mr. Stafford, Mr. Shaw, and Miss Bruce, faculty, Ronald Oxendale, Dick Duffy, Arlene Purdy, Judy Ogden, Sandra l-ligby, Josephine Gunder- son, Dean Johnson, Don Cowlham, Arlene l-loward, Shirley Buehler, l-lerb Turin, Wellman Lindstrom, students. -twenty- Superintendent Ogden assists kindergarten attendants, Dean Bengford and Sharon Grone- meyer, from the platform after having crowned the king and queen. Cliff later proved to be indispensable during the magazine sales campaign and was often seen d-oing more than his duty, going the rounds with our advertisers, Jim Howard and Grant Langle, Much credit is due to our conscientious layout editors, Audrey Cowlham, Na-ncy Neville, and Arlene Purdy. The appearance of each page is the result of their patient work. Jean Hanson, Myrna Lange, and Marilyn Sommers handled efficiently the job of typing copy for the printer. Helen Kessler and Dwayne Wingert lined up classes for Mr. Buntrock's busy camera and Dwayne took many fine pictures at special events. Judy Ogden, Willard Johnson, and Ronald Oxendale put their heads together and came up with some new ideas for the annual Sales Carnival. All this could not have been accomplished without the invaluable aid of Miss Bruce, to whom we are s-o grate- ful for expert advice and assistance. We have striven to make this i957 Trojan the best ever, and we hope you will think our time was well spent. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA The Future Farmers of America is an integral part of the vocational agriculture course. It is an intra-circular activity having its origin and root in a different part of the school curriculum. It is based on the following motto: Learning to do, doing to learn, learning to live and living to serve. No national student organization enjoys greater freedom of self-government under adult counsel and guidance than the F. F. A. The foundation upon which the F. F. A. organization is built includes leadership and character develop- ment, sportsmanship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship and patriotism. The aims and purposes of the Future Farmers are to develop competent rural and agricultural leadership, to strengthen the confidence of farm boys and young men in themselves and their work, and to create more interest in the intelligent choice of a farming occupation. A further aim and purpose is the development of individual farming programs and establishment in farming. These encourage members to improve the farm home and its surroundings and to participate of agriculture. in worthy undertakings for the improvement i956-i957 are: President, Merle Lansink, Secretary, Herbie Turin, Treasurer, Richard and Sentinel, Darrell Herrig. FCDOTBALL On August 24, thirty Odebolt and Arthur boys turned out for the first scheduled practice session of the i956 fooball season. Complying with custom, the first week of practice was mostly conditioning and fundamentals, and was hard work for everyone. On September l4, the impossible was performed, Wall Lake beat Ode- bolt for the first time in thirteen years, O to 27. The next Friday however, the boys bounced back to defeat Kingsley 20 to 6. ln the two following weeks the Trojans lost their homecoming game to a tough Moville team, 2 to I9, and easily rolled over Correctionville 26 to 0. On October l2 the Odebolt eleven suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Onawa, 7 to l2. ln the minds of many this was the outstanding twenty-six game of the season in spitetof the score. With a break or two the Trojans might have beaten Onawa, and it could easily have been the turning point of the season. The next four games spelled four defeats for the Trojans, as they entered into the tougher portion of their schedule. They lost to Manilla, 6 to 39, Sac City, 0 to 39, Ida Grove, O to 26, and Holstein, 6 to 49. Although a two wins-seven losses season is not considered successful, it must be remembered that Odebolt played nine very good teams, and that some very fine play was shown by the Trojans. Odebolt need not be ashamed of their 1956 football squad. .sh Grant Langle Half Back Senior Weight-I 75 Dennis Bengford Guard Junior Weight-l 60 Don Taylor Larry Waldemar Ol-hel Johnson Ted Meentz Cliff Schroeder Tom Meltesen Jim Howard Half Back Tackle End Tackle End Half Back Quarter Back Senior Senior Senior Senior Senior Senior Senior Weight-l Weight-200 Weight-l 85 Weight-l 90 Weight-l 50 Weight-l 40 Weight4l 30 Roger Fineran Kyle McGonigIe Ronald Hague Larry Neville Darrell Herrig Bob Taphorn Jack McTasney Richard Thayer End End Center Half Back Guard Full Back Guard End Senior Senior Junior Senior Junior Junior Sophomore Junior Weight-l 50 Weight-l 40 Weight-l 60 Weight--l 20 Weight-l 50 Weight-l 35 Weight-160 Weight4l 50 I' Vik: ' 522919 'mi , 552+ gay, an Back row-Audrey Mandernach, Marilyn Snyder, Yvonne Lange, Patty Sonichsen, Lois Thies, Sharon Johnson, Mary Alice Lindberg, Marjorie Downing, Irene Wallace. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Won 16-Lost 7 The Trojanettes played one of the toughest schedules in history this season. Two teams on the schedule, Somers and Ida Grove, had all their team back from the previous year when they went to the state tournament. Also on the schedule were three other teams that had played in district tourna- ments the year before. The girls got off to a slow start, but gained momentum as the season progressedi This was the first time in the past six years the Trojanettes failed to win the Sac County Tournament. The Trojanettes defeated Lake View in the first round. In the semi-finals Early defeated Odebolt 47 to 44, when the Trojanettes hit only 19 per cent from the field. Early went on to win the tournament by defeating Schaller. Odebolt defeated Wall lake 52 to 38 to win consolation honors. The 1956-57 season also marked the first time the Odebolt girls team was invited to perform in a clinic. The Trojanettes gave a demonstration in the afternoon, at Holstein, on team offense. ln the evening they played and defeated a very tough Hartley team 47 to 35. ln sectional tournament play the Trojanettes appeared to, be a tough contender, and proved themselves to be in the finals. Odebolt drew a bye in the first round and played and defeated Lake City in the second round 45 to 34. This set the stage for the game of the year, meeting rival Ida Grove in the finals. lda Grove, with its state tournament team from the previous year, had a post forward averaging 39 points a game. Myrna Lange, Arlene Purdy, Audrey Cowlham, Margaret Johnson, and Sandra Higby combined their efforts to hold her to only five baskets from the field. Three of these came with only three minutes left in the ball game. This guard combination deserves credit for doing such a fine job all season. Ida Grove defeated Odebolt 58 to 49, but it was a game with only one or two points difference most of the way. ln the front court for the Troianettes were Jean Hanson, Judy Ogclen, Audrey Meeves and Bonnie Raasch. They combined their efforts for a 57.6 offensive average. In the guard court the defensive average was 50.1 points per game. High scorer for the season was Jean Hanson with 602 points in 23 games for a 26.1 point per game average. Judy Ogden was next with 450 points in 23 games for a 19.5 point per game average. Judy was also the toughest rebounder on the squad. Five seniors completed their competition this year. Their loss is gfwiiigz to be felt very much. They are Judy Ogden, Arlene Purdy, Jean Hanson, Audrey Cowlham and Myrna Lange. Prospects for next year are not too bright with a number of young aiils in line for positions. However, the Trojanettes for 1957-'58 could be pretty tough if they develop enough spirit and desire. -twenty-nine-- JEAN HANSON Forward MYRNA LANGE Guard AUDREY MEEVES Forward ARLENE PU RDY Guard J UDY OGDEN Forward AUDREY COWLHAM Guard MARGARET JOHNSON Guard BONNIE RAASCH Forward JU DY WALLACE Guard MARILYN LANGE Forward SANDRA H IGBY Guard JANE LEONARD Forward -thirty- Lynn Wilkins outjumps Arlene as Audrey and Myrna set for tip J e , GS sEAsoN's RECORD on Newell ....... BCDYS' BASKETBALL The Trojans, during their l956-57 season won 8 out of 23 gdmes. A lack of uniform scoring was their greatest deficit, with Othel Johnson, Dean Johnson and Jim Howard carrying most of the burden throughout the season. The most heralded victory was the defeat of Lytton in the Sac County Tournament after a previous game which Lytton won by 3l points. The season scoring was as follows: Total Points Average per game Othel Johnson 432 l8.8 Dean Johnson 259 l l.3 Jim Howard 223 9.7 Bill Stock 89 3.9 Wellman Lindstrom 84 3.6 The graduates of this year will be greatly missed in the year to follow. The athletes of '57 produced five new school records. Othel Johnson set a record in the discus with a throw of l33'4lA . He also set a record in the high jump at 5'8M4 . Ted Meents set a record in the shot put with a distance of 4l'3 . Dean Johnson set a record in the 880 yard run with a time of 2:O6.3. Dean also placed fifth in the state indoor 880 yard run. The other record was set by the two-mile relay in a very fine time of 8:36.5. The runners were Bob Rex, Tom Meltesen, Richard Konrady, and Dean Johnson. Seven boys qualified for the state outdoor track meet held at Drake stadium in Des Moines. They were Othel Johnson, Dean Johnson, Ted Meents, and the medley relay. Ted Meents placed third in the discus and Othel Johnson fifth in the state meet. Othel Johnson was the boy with the largest point production for the season. He scored an outstanding total of 843A points for the entire season. Of the twenty-two boys that lettered, only five were seniors. All the weight men were seniors so the point production next season will probably come chiefly from the running events. -thirty-five- Front row L. to R.: Bob Miller, Jim Wieborg, John Bauer, Bill Ogren, Donald Hoefling, Ar- len Luitjens, Tom Meltesen, Richard Konrady. She has further de- cided that her own true fulfillment can best be realized by going out for the football team. Any number of complications result: the father's job is jeopardized because the bank president doesn't ap- prove, the girl's elder sisters insist that their social life has been blighted-especially Joan, whose boy friend is captain of the foot- ball team, and the girl football player finds that playing football and being a girl aren't always compatible, particularly when her own boy friend disapproves of what she's doing, After any number of riotous mishaps, all ends on a happily tender note with the fam- ily going -out to see Jeannie in the high school play, WSW E, X .xr - - M K f , . . 5i'.Tl WT'.1f f.i3f1?f2frf'i1211 fr ifybgrlerswfiffwftfflint fl? s S Qu i ' gf , 2 592' iii? f o rt' 'L lg S f ---- I ---- l - 1 fiilk - 1 ' '- i 7' f ' E W ' ' 2iii!lQ'fifK ' -V 1 g my ' - ge - -, , - mi-li ' 4 W, wir' 1 fy' .Q Q. 1 . , ,ge ffsw. it ' X X i ggi 'Q R R if i 5 Sf- 'tr X if 2 Midi jf, , ,, . Daughter Kay announces the engagement out of a clear sky. Mrs. Banks and the two boys are happy, but Banks is in a dither. The groom-to-be, Buckley Dunstan, appears on the scene and Banks realizes that the engagement is ser- ious. The wedding is planned as a very simple affair, but as time progresses, more and more complications develop. The list of guests grows until there are nearly two hundred more than the church will hold for the wedding and the home will hold for the reception. Mr. Banks finds himself digging into his pocket for new clothes, flowers, caterers, champagne, eight bridesmaids' dresses, hairdressers, salesmen, photographers, and food. The climax of the story comes when Buckly himself objects to the way things are getting out of hand. He storms from the house otrer Kay angrily tells him there will be no wedding. The ploy ends happily, however, after a reconciliation is made and the radiant bride leaves for the church' on the arm of her father. Senior Class History On the warm sunny day of September 4, 1944, 24 proud little boys and girls marched up the steps of the old building to Miss Kelch's kindergarten room. As she called roll Dennis Bengford, Diane Bengford, Marjorie Betts, Jarrett Boerner, Franklin Cranston, Robert Deal, Richard Duffy, Thomas Er'ickson, Janice Gustafson, Jean Hanson, Ruth Hedberg, James Howard, Joyce Mandernach, Thomas Meltesen, Ronald Murr, Kyle McGonigle, Larry Neville, Nancy Neville, Jackie Nitzke, Judy Ogden, Ronald Oxendale, Arlene Purdy, Bonnie Snyder, and Constance Stone were present. Our first big treat was the daily lunch which consisted of milk and graham crackers. One of our greater accomplishments was our Rhythm Band which supplied plenty of noise and music? We spent a large part of our time either in the little red church or the house. The rest of the time was spent eating, tear- ing things apart or taking our naps on our rugs. As the year drew to an end, things were more subdued. We agreed upon the fact that the year wasn't a complete waste of time and effort. ln our move across the hall we lost Dennis Bengford, Diane Bengford, Jarrett Boerner, Dick Duffy, Janice Gustafson, Ruth Hedberg, Jack Nitzke, Bonnie Snyder, and Connie Stone, but gained Clifton Albrecht, Richard Barr, Gloria Girvan, Rochelle Hixon, Richard Konrady, Bill Peters, and Mildred Trulock. Our new teacher was Mrs. Helkenn who thrilled us by allowing us to enact Hansel and Gretel for our proud par- ents. This production completed the year and we were ready to move on. In our trip down the corridor we lost Mar- jorie Betts, Richard Barr, Frank Cranston, Kyle McGonigle, Ronnie Murr, Larry Neville and Ar- lene Purdy. To make up for our losses we gained Dennis Huff, Willard Johnson, Clifford Mallison, Jim Monroe, Mavis Monroe, Kathleen Neilsen, Eugene Osborn, and Virgil Osborn. Miss Johnson was our new teacher. Our little store was the pride and joy of the class. lt helped us to make change and learn the values of money. We were then ready to move back across the hall. In our move we lost the Osborn boys, Eugene and Virgil, but gained lola Albrecht, Nolan Schnuckel, and Muriel Schrooten. Our teacher this year was Miss Van Wyck. A memorable event was our trip to the Home Economics room where we made cottage cheese and drank butter- milk. During the year we were shocked to hear of the death of Bob Deal, one of our classmates. But time did not stand still. We were soon ready to move on to fourth grade. We lost Willard Johnson, Clifford Mallison, and Murial Schrooten, but gained Lois Gustafson, Othel Johnson, Don Taylor, Dick Waterbury, and Miss Charlson, our new teacher. The year passed quickly and we were soon ready to move upstairs to the fifth grade room. When we reached the second floor, we found we had lost Clifton Albrecht, Jimmy Monroe and Kathleen Neilsen, We made up for our losses by getting Gary Brothers, Keith Ericson, Jeanette Ladehoff, and Kyle McGonigle. We all liked Miss Brodersen because we spent so much time on art. But all the time we were moving up, getting closer to the top with each step. Our next move was to Miss Benning's sixth grade room. In this move we lost Gary Brothers, Jeanette Ladehoff, and Dick Waterbury. But new faces were those of Audrey Cowlham, Sandra Haradon, DeWayne Hedberg, Larry Koster, Grant Langle, Juanita Peed, and Richard Young. The year moved quickly and the first thing we knew Miss Benning had changed her name to Mrs. Kies. Our next move was the biggest we had ever made. We were now in the big assembly and could be called part of the Jr. High. Things were much different: three grades in one big room, only four subjects, having eight periods a day, and four different teachers. New members who took the step with us were Bill Allen, Helen Kessler, Curtis Lappegard, and Norma Stiles. We lost Audrey Cowlham, DeWayne Hedberg, Rochelle Hixon, Dennis Huff, Juanita Peed, and Richard Young. Seventh grade was hard to get used to but we finally made the adjustment. When we reached 8th grade we found we had lost Bill Allen and Sandra Haradon, but we gained Roger Fineran. Eighth grade was much the some as seventh grade. When we got ready to move again, we stapped to think of some of our teachers during the past two years. They were Mr. Potter, Miss Anderson, Mr. Hamann, Mrs. Peterson, Miss Hunter, and Mr. Buum. We were now ready to continue Freshman!! We were still in the old building but we felt more important with that name of Freshman. Two of our Kindergarten pals from St. Martin's school were with us once again. They were Dick Duffy and Bonnie Snyder. Other new faces from other schools were Adrienne Berg- man, Dennis Coburn, Jeanette Ladehoff, Merle Lansink, Barbara Linden, Don Lindgren, Ted Meents, Larry Neville, Clifford Schroeder, Marilyn Sammers, lrene Taphorn, Frank Vaughn, and Dwayne Wingert. When we looked again we found we had lost Keith Ericson, Richard Konrady, and Curtis Lappegard. This year we went to the new building for some of our classes. We were really one hundred one- getting to be somebody, we thought. The next year we were elevated to Senior High. We were Sophomores now, a little green on the high school methods, but we were in high school anyway. ln our move to the new building we lost Lola Albrecht, Larry Koster, Don Lindgren, Bill Peters, and Muriel Schrooten. To make up for our many losses we added Willard Johnson, Myrna Lange, and Larry Waldemar, to our num- ber. Things were a little different over in the new building. We had lockers for our books and coats. The rooms were new to us. We were divided into home rooms with the Juniors and Seniors. We could participate in more things, such as the high school sports and dramatics. Every day seemed to bring something new to us, but we soon became part of the hustle and bustle. Soon we were Juniors. Just one more step and we would be on the top. Going from our Sophomore to our Junior year we lost Adrienne Bergman, Jeanette Ladehoff, Mavis Monroe, and Mildred Trulock. Our new classmates were Evelyn Hedstrom, Sharon Kinney, Sherwin Larson, Arlene Purdy, Donna Sewell, Terry Skarin, and Donna Terry. During the year we lost Donna Terry and Terry Skarin. Things got underway and we were soon working on the Junior Class play entitled The Little Dog Laughed. The next big event of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet with the theme of Moonlight and Roses. It turned out to be a big success. The year ended and we were now on the top step. We were finally Seniors. At the beginning of our Senior year we num- bered thirty-seven in all. They were Dennis Co- burn, Audrey Cowlham, Dick Duffy, Roger Fineran, Gloria Girvan, Lois Gustafson, Jean Hanson, Jim Howard, Othel Johnson, Willard Johnson, Helen Kessler, Sharon Kinney, Myrna Lange, Grant Langle, Merle Lansink, Sherwin Larson, Barbara Linden, Joyce Mandernach, Mavis Monroe, Kyle McGonigle, Ted Meents, Tom Meltesen, Larry Neville, Nancy Neville, Judy Ogden, Ronald Oxen- dale, Arlene Purdy, Nolan Schnuckel, Clifford Schroeder, Donna Sewell, Bonnie Snyder, Marilyn Sommers, Norma Stiles, lrene Taphorn, Don Tay- lor, Larry Waldemar, and Dwayne Wingert. We lost Tom Erickson, Evelyn Hedstrom, and Frank Vaughn. Our only gain was Mavis Monroe, whom we lost at the second semester. Seven members have gone through their entire school course ta- gether. They are Jean Hanson, Jim Howard, Joyce Mandernach, Tom Meltesen, Nancy Neville, Judy Ogden, and Ronald Oxendale. We've all had our ups and downs but everything always works out in the end. In closing, we would just like to say to all underclassmen, Take your time. lt goes foster than you think. ACKNOWLEDCSMENT Our yearbook production is just a little like that on an assembly line. At the beginning are Mr. Burt Hedstrom of the American Yearbook Com- pany, and Miss Rosmer Bruce, yearbook adviser, giving us expert advice. As our book begins to take shape, we find Mr. Kermit Buntrock of Storm Lake taking our individual and group pictures, and our layout editors fitting each of the pictures into the proper place. As we near completion of our task, the Odebolt Chronicle is doing the printing of all copy. Then back to the layout again, for the final work of pasting pictures and printed copy on mounting boards for each page. The completed pages are then sent to the American Yearbook Company at Hannibal, Missouri, where they are lithographed and bound into the completed book. All this activity is made possible through the combined efforts of these indispensable people, and the financial contributions of Odebolt and Arthur businessmen. We thank them all.
