S 0, S t The night of the prom was magical and wonderful, especially for Wesley Thomas and Misty Edwards, who were crowned Mr. and Miss OCHS of 1987. Any of the six girls in the Prom Court could have become queen, they all looked so beautiful! Even the guys looked dashing in their tuxedoes! The night went by too fast, but for Mr. and Miss OCHS and the rest of us, it will be cherished always. 2. This year was a year of cel- ebration and of scandals. Amid the events of the 200th anniversary of the Constitu- tion, we were introduced to Donna Rice, Fawn Hall, and Tammy Faye. Each had their own story to tell. The PTL Organization came into the spotlight when Oral Roberts announced that he needed thousands of dol- lars from his viewers. If the goal wasnlt reached, Roberts proclaimed that the Lord would call him home. By the middle of March, he had achieved his goal. The PTL reappeared in the news when the brief affair be- tween Jim Bakker and Jessica Hahn became public. Soon af- ter this incident, PTL profits dropped drastically and the company filed for bankrupcy. Jim and Tammy Faye went to Gatlinburg, where they con- tinue to stay. In March 1988, Jimmy Swaggart announced that he was guilty of a moral wrong- doing. His actions were judged and a penalty was de- cided on. Swaggart was not al- lowed to preach for three months, and would be on pro- bation for a period of two years. Presidential-hopeful Pat Robertson declared that the scandal was an idea of George Bush's that would lower Robertson's popularity. Bush denied any knowledge of the incident. On the world scene, a Sum- mit meeting was held in early December between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gor- bachev. The conference led to the disarmament of four per- cent ofthe total nuclear arms population. The INF Treaty was signed, sending all missles of range 3400 miles and below to be scrapped. 128 I Features Tensions ran high this year as powers clashed. In the Per- sian Gulfl attacks were com- monplace. The United States continued to send military craft overseas in an attempt to avoid war with the Iranians. In Atlanta, there was an up- rising at the Federal Peniten- tiary. Cuban detainees took hostages and demanded the promise of not being sent back to Cuba. After a period of nine days, the hostages were released. Some were sent back to Cuba, while others were transferred to other prisons. Just recently passed this year was a new bill raising the speed limit on most highways to 65 mph. Governor Harris agreed to sign the bill only if a mandatory seat belt law was added to it. When the bill was sent to back to the House, the mandatory law was approved. We lost much talent this year. Actors such as Jackie Gleason, Lee Marvin, Trevor Howard, and Lorne Greene died. With them were such celebrities as: dancers Fred Astaire and Ray Bolger, ac- tresses Rita Hayworth and Margaret Hamilton, enter- tainer Liberace, and movie- maker John Houston. In sports this past year, the Washington Redskins defeat- ed the Denver Broncos in Superbowl XXII by a surpris- ing score of 42-10. In the World Series, the Red Sox tri- umphed over the Cardinals. However, 1987 will be best remembered as the year of the Iran-Contra scandal. For days this past summer, pro- grams were pre-empted in or- der to show the hearings. Ol- iver North emerged as a national hero, admitting that he was authorized to do eve- ry act. Other officials such as Robert McFarland and Admi- ral Poindexter also went c trial. In the end it real wasn't decided who knew ho much. President Reagan popularity began to wane. Reagan's credibility wa again put on the line when l nominated Judge Bork to tl Supreme Court. Debates ov his nomination were long ar heated. When the vote final came, it was clear Boi wouldn't get the seat. Next nominated was Judi Ginsberg. He was more r spected until he admitted ' having smoked marijuar while in college. Again, tl seat in the Supreme Court wa refused. Campaigns for nominatioi to the Presidency were ev rywhere in 1987, but nor were as focused upon as Ga: Hart's. Apparently, Hart ont had a brief affair with Donr Rice. It soon became publi and forced Hart out of tl race. Then, surprising ever one, Hart re-entered the rat with all intentions of winnin Not everything this ye: was scandalous or sneaky. A year the 200th anniversary 4 the signing of the Constitutic of the United States was cc ebrated, culminating on Sei tember 8. Special ceremonit were held on the Capitf grounds, and special telev sion programs were broadcas Perharps the most touchir story of all was the one aboi a little girl in Texas who b came trapped for almost tvs days in a well. Emergent medics were finally able to gi Jessica McClure and bring ht out safely. It was a tricky and scar dalous year, but fortunatel there were events that mac each of us proud. It was de initely a year to be remen bered.
