SENIOR CLASS HISTORY OF 1947 48 August 3 1936, was an exc1t1ng day for 33 boys and gxrls who started to school at Oc1na Mrs Margaret Van Deventer who had a great deal of patlence, was our prxmary teacher Seventeen students of th1s group made the pr1mary and f1rst ln one year Now that we are semors there are only f1ve who started here They are B111 Henson Georgla Baca Thelma West, Charles Tatyrek, and Thomas Smoot Mrs Claud Johns was our teacher durmg the tlme we were m the sec ond and thlrd grades In the second grade Dorothy Bell from Lake Creek Jolned th1s class Georgla Baca moved to Lake Creek, and Thelma West moved to Texas La Vetta H111 was added to the roll ln the tlurd grade ln the fourth flfth, and sxxth grades Mrs Melv1n Demlng was our tea cher Durmg thxs txme we went to school 1n the gyxn whxle the new school bu1ld1ng was bemg constructed J I K1ll1anJo1ned thls class 1n the sxxth grade The seventh grade welcomed Joyce Beeson and Jean Horne to our class Durlng the erghth grade Lou Ella Stafford Inez Owens Georg1a Baca were added to the class On May 18 1944, seventeen members graduated from the exghth grade Then came the day when we fxrst entered hxgh school Our class was Jomed by a group of students from W1llou Among these were June Morgan B1ll1e Berry Bobby Jo Berry, Imogene Mayfxeld Rex Paty, Glenna Dean Smlth Marlon Craft, Marvmn Smlth, and Delbert McCafferty Th1s made a total of twenty f1ve Durmg the thxrd week the upper classmen decxded to prove to us that we weren t so smart and that we were green freshmen Of course that meant three days of 1n1t1at1on They made us do everythlng from wearlng rxbbons around our toes to weanng gu.nny sack dresses and drznkxng water from a teaspoon At fxrst, we could hardly take xt but on Fr1 day mght they gave us a party because of our good sportsmanshxp Th1s year Bobb1e Jo Sunderland and Huston Jermgan Jomed our class Mr W C Quattlebaum was elected as sponsor In our Sophomore year M B Lewxs was our sponsor A few members of thls class moved and quxt school dur1ng thxs year Exghteen members enrolled mn the Junlor class June Morgan had mar ned durxng the summer vacation and had moved to New Mexxco Bonnxe John son from Mangum was added to our class La Vetta H111 quxt school and marrxed Mr Earl Hager was chosen sponsor ln May we went wxth the sen xors on a tru: to Cratervxlle We spent a weekend there, and had a very mce tzme even nf xt dxd ram most of the tlme Seventeen dlghlfltd semors enrolled for our last year ln hxgh school Joyce Beeson had marrzed durlng the summer months, and she 15 flmshmg school at Sayre, Oklahoma Bobbxe Jo Sunderland and Huston Jermgan left our class to attend other hxgh schools There are only frfteen semors left of thxs happy class Thxs 18 only a brxel' hlstory to remmd us of the dear old school days at Ocma 1 . . , .
