Sutman January 1988 Dear Member of the Class of 1988: As a member of the Class of 1988 you have been at Oceanside High School for the past four years. Throughout this time, we have worked to prepare your minds and your will to face the challenges ahead. The challenges will range from the daily and personal to the timeless and worldly. We have expended great energies in the effort to prepare you and have faith in your humanity and in your potential. But are you ready to overcome your fear? In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Award, William Faulkner wrote of today's man, He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no reason in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart . . . love and humor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Overcoming your fear and relying on your humanity and your potential will enable you to meet the seemingly insurmountable challenges before you and your classmates. P. Director — Chairperson ENGLISH The English Department encompasses over 30 courses for students of varying abilities. We have developed model programs to strengthen writing skills, team-teaching courses in collaboration with the Social Studies Department, Honor classes. Independent Studies and Advanced Placement English for college credit. Several of our teachers have been awarded special honors for their teaching effectiveness by Cornell University, Pennsylvania State University, and Johns Hopkins. Our students in Regents English Achievement and Advanced Placement exams have scored dramatically higher than any school in the area. For all students — those who need help in developing their reading and writing skills or those who need additional enrichment challenges, the courses and staff provide fine opportunities.
