Kraemer DIRECTOR OF HIGH SCHOOL PUPIL PERSONNEL Timothy J. Murray ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Rosemary J. Sutman January 1988 Dear Member of the Class of 1988: As a member of the Class of 1988 you have been at Oceanside High School for the past four years. Throughout this time, we have worked to prepare your minds and your will to face the challenges ahead. The challenges will range from the daily and personal to the timeless and worldly. We have expended great energies in the effort to prepare you and have faith in your humanity and in your potential. But are you ready to overcome your fear? In his acceptance speech for the Nobel Award, William Faulkner wrote of today's man, He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget it forever, leaving no reason in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart . . . love and humor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Overcoming your fear and relying on your humanity and your potential will enable you to meet the seemingly insurmountable challenges before you and your classmates. I offer you our faith and our good wishes for a life filled with happiness and accomplishment. Very truly yours, Richard M. Kraemer Principal RMK:sb EDUCATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE ft V 22 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL R. Sutman DIRECTOR OF PUPIL PERSONNEL r. T. Murray 23 P. The proceeds from the five-month competition went to the newly-created Helen B. Sullivan school store. The competition, which included a mural contests and a booster drive, culminated in a night of sports. The class of ’88 won “The Battle” for the second consecutive year. They also took second-places in the first two battles, in 1985 and 1986. 156 157 DECA DEDICATES BATTLE ©FVTHE CLASSES' 1988 ry Special HELEN B. SULLIVAN to a Very Special Woman This past August, Helen B. Sullivan, a long-time friend and valuable employee to the Oceanside School System passed away. Mrs. Sullivan is fondly remembered by the staff, faculty, and students for her genuine interest and concern for the student body. If an extra pair of hands were needed, Mrs. Sullivan was always there. No job was ever too large or small for her. She consistently gave of herself, her time, and her energy. Her office door was always open. If a student needed a shoulder to cry on, she was there. If faculty or staff ever needed advice, she would put him in touch with the right person. If students were confused, emotionally upset, or lonely, Mrs. Sullivan would take their minds off their troubles with her marvelous sense of humor. She helped each and every student to conquer his problem by creating small tasks and jobs for him to complete. Yet each job was meaningful and served its purpose. To honor and recognize Helen B. Sullivan’s philosophy, the family, staff, and students dedicate the 1988 Battle of the Classes in her memory. All proceeds from this event, sponsored by DECA and the students of the Business Department will be used to develop and operate the Helen B. Sullivan School Store. The primary purpose of the Helen B. Sullivan School Store will be to: Provide an immediate hands-on marketing experience; raise the self-esteem and provide a feeling of success for all students, no students, no matter what their ability; develop leadership skills. 159 The Sailors varsity football team experienced its second consecutive losing season in 1987. The team had a 1-7 record. Coach Luisi’s team did have some bright spots. Receiver Anthony Meola was an All-County selection and cornerback Ray Jacobs was selected All-League. The play of Sean O’Sullivan and Sophomore quarterback Jay Fiedler also inspired the team. The highlight of the season was Oceanside’s win over Long Beach on October 24th. The whole team played well in the 24-6 rout. Captains Sean O’Sullivan and Anthony Meola. VARSITY Row I: S. Davidson, R. Ikes, C. Edwards, C. Antonio, A. Meola (capt.), S. O’Sullivan (Capt.), V. One of the season’s highlights came when the Sailors tied Garden City, the eventual county champions, at Uniondale’s Mitchel Field Complex. Defenseman Timothy Mauro was selected All-County. All-Conference selections were defenseman Richard Willard and forward Marcello Bellocchio. Playing in Nassau County’s toughest division, halfback Shep Golos, defenseman Craig Spatz, and defenseman Shawn Tarquinio were All-Division selections. John Frascatore was a strong forward, finishing third in points per game with 9.3 behind sophomores Allenby Lyson (16 ppg.) and Jay Fiedler (11.9 ppg.). Steve Lisi led the team in assists and three-point field goals. Lyson also led the team in blocked shots, averaging 2.5 per game. Fiedler led in the steal department with 36. The fourth place 800 meter relay consisted of Denaro, Brandenburg, Stacey Gannon, and Donna Maresca. Steven Feit led the team with his performances in the 600 meters, the 1000 meters, and on numerous relays, as well as in strenuous workouts. Gerard Widder performed admirably in the 600 and on the 3200 meter relay. Scott Keenan consistently did well in the 1600 meters. David Somma, in his first track season, turned out to be a pleasant surprise in the shotput. Although fall did not yield much success on the playing fields, captains Dominique “Dee” Prinzevalli and Jennifer Colon led the cheering squad to some great moments, which included the Homecoming weekend and the Sailors’ first football win in two years. Patti Gagliano won the uneven bars in the “High School” division for the second consecutive year. Amy Wildermuth came in first in the “High School” vault competition. Coach Gibel’s squad upheld the good reputation of Oceanside’s wrestling program this past year. The team was led by seniors Marat Lempert, John Doolan, Anthony Meola, and Saul Zabell. Lempert successfully defended his division title, while winning four tournaments during the season at the 105 and 98 pound weight classifications. Doolan (132, 138) was fiesty and gutsy all season, placing in many tournaments even while hurt. Meola (145) began the season quietly, but then peaked towards winter’s end, winning a spot in the Nassau County Tournament. Zabell had his finest year ever, competing at the 215 pound classification, doing well in both dual-meets and tournaments. The team’s future seems bright, as junior Frank Leo (91) won the division championship. Kathy Gallagher led the way, averaging 16 points per game and 16 rebounds per game. Gallagher won an unprecedented third consecutive Girls’ Basketball Most Valuable Player Award. Laura Fonzo was relentless on defense, always frustrating the Sailors’ opponents with her steals. Christa Dwyer was consistently tough at both ends of the court all year. Patti Constantine specialized under the basket with many points and rebounds. I cannot express in words the value of the efforts by Fran Cuomo, Janet Sandhaas, Jennifer Connolly, Suzanne Cunneen, Evie Djoulia, Paula Zeitlin, Pamela Cullen, Elissa Landa, Adam Hess, and Richard Willard. All of us deeply thank Dan Smith, our advisor, and Phil St. Pierre from Taylor Publishing for their inspiration and creative assistance. Four years seems like a lifetime ago. Maybe it was. I entered high school, like some of you, a little scared, but with adventure in my eyes. I do not think it was any big secret that most of the school’s upperclassmen at the time did not want freshmen in “their” high school. As I grew and progressed through Oceanside High, I encountered both success and failure. 1 built up old friendships and I created new ones. I put a tremendous value on meeting good people. Even while still in the middle of my high school years, I knew that I would look upon them as some of the best of my life. Four years have seen me grown. I am still a little scared, and I still have adventure in my eyes, but 1 have already experienced a lifetime of both fear and adventure. So have all of us. Congratulations, and good luck. Sincerely, Steven K. Feit Editor, Spindrift 1988 240
