Kraemer TO THE CLASS OF I985 How many years are allotted to each of us, no one ever knows ahead of time; that is one of tl ™eet mysteries of life One thing is certain, however. When a moment passes by, it is gone forever and nothing can recall it. So it is with the years in high school which for you seniors are only menwrie now. Because this is our 75th year, time and memories become so important. In the words ofT. S. Eliot: “Time present and time past are both perhaps present in time future ” Our “times past” began as a school district with our first commencementin1903 andtwo graduates In 1909 our first four year graduates totalled five leading to 1985 and Us class of600. Our memories past have centered upon friends and classmates, scholarship winners, star athletesand cheerleaders, outstanding artists and musicians and just plain, good people The chronicle of our memories, SPINDRIFT, has'steadfastly gathered our images and thoughts for time future. For some, these remembrances are tender and warm. In Shakespeare's words, however “W) ne cannot be undone. Nonetheless, there is a large looming future awaiting all of us, as it did for our graduates of the past. So many of our graduates seized the moment aggressively so that theirlwes were filled with time well spent and years well lived. Take the future and let it be yours; make the world and your place in it what they ought to be. Fondly and with best wishes always. Richard M. Everywhere we look we see some form of forward movement, a continuum, especially within the scope of the family of mankind. Our high school years are but one phase in this neverending process of growth which extends from the cradle to the grave. With this thought in mind, we, the Class of 1985, would like to dedicate this, the SPINDRIFT which celebrates the 75th anniversary of Oceanside High School to you. Mister Frank Januszewski. We bestow this honor to you for in you we find all the good qualities and positive attitudes necessary as a person to be edified. To us, Mr. Jan embodies not only this concept of progress but he also represents a true spirit of commitment. He consistently gives of himself to us in not only our daily, personal lives but also in those intangible wholesome qualities which are now forming the framework of our future lives. Mr. Jan has always given from his heart to lend spirit to this concept of progress. As a teacher, coach, friend and mentor, Mr. Jan has added something very special to our lives. Just as you judge a machine by its products, so do you judge a school by its graduates. Oceanside High School has been proudly fulfilled, for from its halls have emerged the new citizens of tomorrow. For seventy-five years Oceanside High School has been molding and guiding many students in preparation for their futures. OHS has changed its place of residence many times. In 1901, OHS was under the administration of Principal Robert L. Weaver in a brand new $ , 5,000 school building w hich consisted of sixteen classrooms and two labs. Oceanside grew so fast that the follow ing year a new school had to be built. 1918 was a year filled with pride, for OHS boasted a graduating class of six students. In 1935 OHS moved to what we know as Merle Ave. Junior High and it moved again in 1956 where the High School stands today on the comers of Brower and Skillman Avenues. 66 Mr. V. Leccese Mr. W. Eckhoff Guidance Counselor Science Miss R. Sutman Latin Under the excellent academic guidance of our professional staff OHS has and always will remain an outstanding school system. Do you recognize our Superintendent and our Administrators? These dedicated members of the teaching profession have been on the faculty almost since the High School was erected where it stands today. An outdoor graduation for OHS seniors when the High School was located on Merle Ave. No human being is completely isolated; rather, the development of each individual is influenced by the thoughts and actions of others. As a result, the interdependence of mankind is evident in every facet of life. We. the students of Oceanside High School, have been profoundly influenced by those of our past, present, and our future. A wise person once said, kfcIf you don’t know where you come from, then you don’t know where you're going.” With this in mind, we the class of 85’ recognize and honor our alumni and our underclass to come. 67 The first football team organized in 1918. Although desire for a team was strong, then was no desire among the faculty u provide a coach. The student prevailed upon one of the femal faculty members and surprisingly enough, the team was one of the most successful of our school history. Sailor football player practice) his punts. Athletics at OHS are the embodiment of one of Oceanside High's basic precepts; the spirit of honorable competition. Throughout the seventy-five years of its existence, it has always kept honor, not victory, as its goal and has been fortunate enough to garner both. In the first days of athletics at OHS, growth was limited due to a lack of gymnasiums, but the school managed to begin limited but confident teams. From 1932 to 1934 OHS had the “elite ' distinction of being one of the few schools on the island who had polo as a regular sport. Girls' sports were added on during the 1930’s. Our athletes have brought and will bring credit to our school, not only by their skill, but by their spirit and sportsmanship. 68 The Blur Orient A Sportnite bathing beauty In 1936, to decide an argument over whether the school's students should be referred to as either Pirates or Sailors, the girls founded Sportnite which consisted of song, dance, and athletic events. As you can now deduce, the winners that year were the Sailors. The nickname has surely stuck and along with that so has our longstanding tradition of Sportnite. The Class of 1985 wishes Oceanside Senior High School a very happy 75th Anniversary and many more!! All are architects of Fate, Working in these walls of Time; Some with massive deeds and great. The passing of Richard Eigen in February, 1984, was especially so. Richard should have held a seat at our graduation, but because of that unfortunate and incomprehensible aspect of our society, he is no longer with us. Therefore, this page of our yearbook is dedicated in his memory. Most of us knew him as the bubbly and cheery tennis player who was very much involved in activities at Oceanside High School. In a class our size, it is difficult to get to know everyone. Anyone who knew Richard, however, could only describe him in positive ways; friendly, considerate, and genuinely caring for other people. He will never be forgotten in our hearts and minds. 159 Look, another couple! I'm going to mis these halls I hate Mondays! We have become accustomed to the idea that we belong here at this school. We have frequently asked, “When are we getting out? Well, we will soon be out and the Class of 85 will quickly become a memory. It has been my job and consequent responsibility to help capture a year of our lives in both pictures and words so that we can look back on these happy, frenzied, but altogether memorable days and reminisce with a smile. I know that I will personally remember this book with mixed emotions. Deep down I know I would have never given up the opportunities that this task have opened or to have become acquainted with so many wonderful people. My staff was an invaluable group of people and without its support, dedication and true friendship, this yearbook would never have become possible. Always remember that memories never die and that our futures are built upon their solid foundations. 164 Performing Arts 166 167 . . . With the help of seniors Dan Lindner, Cliff Edwards, Jim Kemp, John Parker, Bob Trotta and Rob Walsh, the Sailors managed to end their fifteen game losing streak, winning the last two games of the season and knocking highly-ranked Hicksville and Massapequa from the playoffs. Season highlights included Scott Bersin’s 46 yd. field goal which broke a 55 year old Oceanside record. All-Conference pick Jeff Oris tied an Oceanside record for most kicks blocked in a season. QB Rob Lenox was voted offensive MVP in the Nassau County All-Star football game. For the fourth consecutive year the Gymnastics team won the county championship. This year, however, the team went into the championship meet as the underdog. Beginning the year with 15 9th graders and 3 8th graders many of the gymnasts, and Coach Morris as well, were skeptical about how they would do. The team rallied around their returning members Liz Breien, Sandi Beaulieu, and Steph Cashetta. Under their leadership the younger, less experienced girls were able to blossom. Plagued by injuries to key members all year the team had to learn to deal with defeat for the first time in 4 years. They finished the year with a 7-2 record and despite the 2 losses arrived at the finals as the 1 seeded team in the county. They lived up to this position by beating both the teams which had beaten them. Finally putting together a healthy team the girls put forth their best effort of the season scoring a 145.55.
