Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Allan Segal Director of Music and Art Richard Vercruysse Director of Physical Education and Health Services A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1984 — Too often, like Gatsby, we tend to spend so much of our lives ''in between time;” a foot in the past, a glance to the future. Some will say, sometimes cynically, that there are really only two good places — where we've been and where we’re going. I would like to think that your years at Oceanside Senior High School provided a striking three-year moment where, in a sense, time stood still, clocks froze, past and future blended, but only to heighten the bittersweet things you lived through at that time, in that place. If we, the faculty, and you, our graduates, have touched each other, even slightly, with a little sentiment and a bit of intellect and a lot of wisdom, then all of our lives are ever so enriched by just having known one another. As you leave high school, try to remember the feelings of friendship which drift out of that sensitive little allegory, Jonathan Livingston Seagull: But overcome space, and all we have left is Here, Overcome time, and all we have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don't you think that we might see each other once or twice?” Happiness in the future. Richard M. Miss Morrell has shown dedication and enthusiasm in teaching her classes. For those students fortunate enough to have had her as a teacher, it has consistently been an enjoyable experience. Miss M. not only showed enthusiasm in her teaching but she also showed more school spirit than many students. Miss M. will always be remembered as both an enthusiastic teacher and a truly caring friend. Therefore, we, The Editorial Staff of Spindrift ’84, wish to dedicate this edition to you, Miss Morrell, for your devotion and kindness to the students of Oceanside High School. Ruth Di Dominica Editor-in-Chief Ten or twenty years from now, when we once again open up this yearbook; skim through the pages and remember our high school years a vivid thought will come to mind. Making this yearbook has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. With the help and guidance of Mr. D. Smith and a dedicated staff, Spindrift '84 has become, for me, a very important part of my high school career. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who has helped me make this yearbook come alive. With you it was a real challenge; without you an impossibility. 65 Ruth DiDominica Life IS TO Be fORTIflCD BY MM1Y FRieriDSHIPS. Daniel Pohevitz, Treasurer Cynthia Johanson, Sec. Lynn Schler 144 To the retiring teachers of Oceanside Senior High School: As we look back now at our experiences throughout high school many thoughts come to mind. The long hours spent doing homework, studying for tests, the times with friends, the many sporting and social events, and most of all, the teachers. Teachers are an important part of any student’s life. They are special people who dedicate much time and attention to all of the students. They are also concerned with situations facing both the school and the community. The staff of SPINDRIFT 84 would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the retiring teachers of Oceanside Senior High School for their effort put forth in teaching Oceanside’s students. These are exceptional people who have given hours and hours of their time helping their co-workers as well as the students. Their contributions will surely not be forgotten. They will be greatly missed not only by the students but also by the remaining faculty. We wish these teachers the best of luck and happiness in the future and hope that they will continue to be successful in whatever lies ahead. It is a service club which promotes higher standards in scholarship and social contacts and encourages the use of the Golden Rule in all human relations. Club members seek to establish themselves as members of the community as well as the high school by participating in community activities and volunteering their services for the elderly and young alike. In 1984 — under the leadership of Paul Pion, Adam Browser, and Thomas Cesiro, the Oceanside Key Club continued the long tradition. Starting with the Homecoming Parade and continuing through a Halloween party for elementary school children and fund-raising for the needy during the holiday season, the Key Club has responded to the needs of the Oceanside community. Of the 17 games played, 13 of them involved the situation where one team was held scoreless. In one of the best played games of the year, the sailors defeated Berner 1-0. Jon Willard scored the lone goal for the Sailors, The playoffs started with OHS defeating Flainedge 9-0. John Carbonara and Paul Pascarella each had 2 goals for the Sailors. The next game versus Port Washington was the most exciting match of the season. Both teams could not capitalize on several opportunities during regulation time and two overtime periods. The game was decided during a shootout when Warren Manners scored the winning goal. The season came to an end one game short of playing at Hofstra when the Sailors lost to Hicksville 3-1. Upon the conclusion of the season, the girls' varsity basketball team found itself tied for third place in their league. A common sight was Lisa Giordano bringing the ball down the court achieving a basket on a fast break, or setting up an offensive play. Sue Anderson led the team as high scorer, while on many occasions Lisa Gress, was known to save the team with her foul shots. Jackie Holub was strong on defense, and quick with steals while Fran Lavelle obtained many offensive and defensive rebounds. Mary Lavelle and Meg Kelly were quick to lend a helping hand in the team's defensive and offensive plays. In tremendously exciting games, the girls overcame Lawrence, Baldwin, and Uniondale in the last seconds of the games. Although the team finished third, it should be looked upon as winners by all, for their dedication and devotion. Coach Torgan extends his congratulations and thanks to all graduating players for the 1984 Girls' Basketball team one that we are all proud of. BASKETBALL Standing: M. Posner, A. Zion, P. Pion. J. Playing in the toughest division in Nassau County is no easy task. The Sailors fought hard though, and stayed close in virtually every game. The team excited their devoted fans in quite a few games, playing one double-overtime game and a bevy of last second decisions.
