Assistant Superintendent Richard Vercruyse District Director, Physical Education and Health Services Richard M. Kraemer PRINCIPAL A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1983 After 13 years of formal education, you have collected much knowledge. You have learned many facts which can be utilized to settle a question, to establish a position or to bring a situation under control. This is information that you can easily retrieve, which you do not have to think about. This information is certain, behind you, and it makes you feel assured. Yet, you could be mistaken. As an educated person, you have also attained skills β€” skills that enable you to do things and to make things. It is a common notion that an educated person will understand how to refine our civilization. As you leave Oceanside High School, I would like you to consider that the possession of knowledge and skills alone will not enable you to reform our civilization should the need arise. I would like you to consider that during your adult lifetime you will be engaged in helping to reshape our civilization as all generations have helped to refine and reshape civilization. The critical element needed in addition to knowledge and skills is thinking power. John Dewey, the eminent philosopher, has written, Thinking on the contrary, starts from doubt or uncertainty. It marks an inquiring, hunting, searching attitude, instead of one of mastery and possession. Through its critical process true knowledge is revised and extended, and our convictions as to the state of things reorganized. The facts and skills we have taught you will serve you well; but without critical thinking, they will not be replenished and adapted as you and your generation reform civilization. By not using thinking power, you will blindly accept new facts and ignorantly reuse them as knowledge. It is my hope that in our 13 years with you, we have founded all three components so that you may fully enjoy the offerings of life and reach a sense of fulfillment. Happiness in the future. In retrospect this book will live in our minds as a part of the past. The pictures and words will remind us of our younger days and our years of high school. Through the construction of this yearbook, we tried to convey these messages both on film and on print. Though this was sometimes a difficult task, it could not have been accomplished without the help of our advisor Mr. Daniel Smith and others, who unselfish dedication and labor have made the making of Spindrift an enjoyable experience. ?Ct yiy yUs L Jeannine Woodyear SPINDRIFT Editor in Chief Jeannine Woodyear Business Editors S. She is the person who has always done more than her share of work for us. We feel that Mrs. Dunwoody is more than the secretary of the Student Project Center: we think of her as a friend. If memories could be photographed, Mrs. Dunwoody would be in each and every one of the pictures. This is how we are showing our love by dedicating Spindrift 1983 to you, Mrs. Dunwoody. Retrospect Mr. Barry H. Kaplan to c 6 u O lx 0 Cl. 152 In 1964, a new director was introduced to the Oceanside High School stage. This director was Mr. Barry H. Kaplan, and that year, the birth of what has become fondly known as the Kaplan Theatre. For some 18 years, Mr. Kaplan has brought to the students of Oceanside High the magic of theatre. He began with Brigadoon, and every year since has brought us the opportunity to explore the theatrical mystery. The shows which Mr. Kaplan has directed at O.H.S. run the gamut from A Midsummer's Night Dream to The Good Doctor, and from West Side Story to Finnian's Rainbow. o' 5 5 ere 153 154 Performing Arts Director ....... Through the generosity of the supporters of the O.H.S. Theater, the benefit raised 1,500 dollars. The show was comprised of many musical numbers from Broadway shows linked together by narration written by Mr. Kaplan. Despite this handicap, the minds of every band member were set on one single goal: to win the first place trophy at every competition they attended. After many competitions, the O.H.S. marching band completed another successful season. They took first place in every competition they attended, and defended their title as the 1982 Long Island Chapter Eight Champions. This year's team was considered to be young with 17 returning lettermen. Led by the All Division, All Conference, and All Conference captain, Chris Paggi, the team's season record was 12-4-1. This earned them a first place title in Division I. Also contributing to this victorious record were John Carbonara, Gerry Piazza and Warren Manners. After working their way to the semi-finals, the Sailors suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Garden City. This semi-final game of the Nassau County Championship was played at Hofstra University. After two forty minute halves, two five minute overtime periods and two five minute sudden death overtime periods, the score was 0-0. With fingers crossed and breaths held, Oceanside fans watched what is known as a shut-out. Both teams sent five of their best players to take one shot at the goal with only a goalie to stop the ball. Disappointment set in as the Garden City goalie stopped enough shots for his team to be victorious. Although leaving the field with looks of despair on their faces, the team soon realized that this season was a very successful one, despite their final loss. Congratulations and thanks goes out to each member for making the 1982 Boy's Soccer team one that we are all proud of. But coach Sam Torgan felt confident that the returning girls could continue their winning w'ays and capture yet another County Championship. Coach Torgan's intuition proved correct. Led by the intimidating spikes of Jill Januszew’w’ki and the setting and digging of Lore Klotz (the co-captains of the team) the girls won game after game to qualify for the division Championship against Uniondale. Also contributing to the Sailors' victories wrere Terry McDevitt and Karyn Elari. Lori Roths-tein, Mary Lavelle, Fran Lavelle, and Trish Cordes rounded off this almost invincible team. The secret to their continuing success is the w'ay individual skills are used as a contributive force. A set-up by Elari might lead to a Januszewki slammer, or a Lore Klotz dink. The Sailors' laid-back, seemingly indifferent attitude is a sort of professionalism they've obtained through many years of playing together under pressure. There are over twenty teams trying to dethrone the reigning champions. Maintaining this status is far from easy. After winning the Division Championship, the girls went on to defeat East Meadow for the Conference Championship. They clinched the Americal League title by prevailing over Wantagh. The team's success continued throughout the playoffs. In tremendously exciting games, the girls powered and finessed their way past Great Neck North, Bethpage, Hicksville, and finally, Uniondale in the finals. The 3 final games wrere played at Lynbrook High School. These intense games were enjoyed by a large and enthusiastic crowd of Ocean-side fans. A great season was thus ended: the girls walked out with a 29-2 record and another County Championship. Volleyball Records Service Pts. T. McDevitt 243 Spikes J. Januszewski 246 Blocks J. Enthusiastic performances were contributed by all, but Captain Ed Kearns was clearly the best. In the 5000 meter (approximately 3.1 miles), Ed ran a 16:09, giving him the seventh best time in the country. Ed was a top finisher in the Manhattan College Invitational. Senior Ken Muellers ran very well for the Sailors. Running 18:00 in the county championship and doing equally well in all of the dual meets. Ken was the second best scorer on the Sailors' team. In a sport where giving your all means running up and down treacherous hills and through slippery woods, each member of the team gained a sense of personal pride and achievement. Although the team finished third in its conference, it should be looked upon as winners by all. A winning tradition has been established by the cross-country team. Sports Β£ Girl's Tennis Team Although this year's Girl's Tennis team did not have a highly successful year in terms of their win-loss record, fun was had by all. If anyone attended the practices or matches, they saw this was highly evident. Smiles and constant laughter seemed as much a part of the game as hitting the ball over the net. Their lack of success on the scoreboard could be at least, in part, attributed to their being in the most competitive league. However, there were some highlights during the season. The doubles of Cindy Roth and Nancy Baker made it to the second round in the county tournament. The Most Valuable Player award was given to Robyn Alweiss for consistent all around play. First, it was a joint meeting held with the Rotary sponsored Interact Club of Oceanside High School. Second it was held at the main conference room of South Nassau Communities Hospital which demonstrated the support of Interact and Rotary for the hospital and its programs. The purpose of the evening was the induction of new members into Interact. After introductory remarks by Rotary President, Bob Zweigel and Interact President Jacqueline Levy, Vice President Marc List spoke of the service activities performed by Interact members, their responsibilities and the connection with Rotary. Interact Secretary Gabrielle Godette, then spoke of the future plans of Interact, including a fund raising carnival, a bowl-a-thon and walk-a-thon with a door to door drive. Interact will donate funds to the Diabetes Foundation, and the Coma Foundation. Following this. Interact advisor, Dan Bashner, aided by Margaret Carlock and Valerie Rodman inducted the new Members. Congratulatory remarks were given by Treasurer Lois Schlam. Oceanside Interact is proud of the fact that they are the oldest Interact Club in New York State, now in its 21st year. A GUIDING HAND It is nice to know that there are always people who care about the needy and less fortunate. One such group of students at Oceanside High School have banded together to form the Club Big Brother Big Sister. This is a community service club which is affiliated with Big Brother Big Sister of Nassau County. The purpose of this club is to help lonely children by offering them a certain amount of time each week. Mrs. Dians Cassella, the high school social worker and advisor of this club, stated that, There are a lot of lonely children, more than one would think, in the community who could benefit from loving a big brother or big sister. The minimum amount of volunteered time is one day a week for two hours. When you are with the child, you can go anywhere and do anything you want. The club is trying to raise money to help reimburse the volunteer. Big Brother Big Sister helps the emotional needs of a child between the ages of seven and seventeen. As Senior Sandra Lehrman, President of this club put it, This is the best way to have fun while helping someone at the same time. (reprinted from the school newspaper. The Sider Press.) CONGRESS VII On Friday, January 28, over 350 foreign delegates combined with almost 150 Oceanside delegates for Oceanside's seventh annual Model Congress. Foreign delegates came from as far as Maryland to attend Congress, and all were housed in homes of Oceanside delegates for the entire weekend. Oceanside Model Congress 1983 officially began with opening ceremonies in the auditorium, and a speech by Chairman Emily Rubin. Then delegates flocked to their assigned committees to begin debating. Bills were debated in seventeen committees in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Running each committee was a Chairman from Oceanside and a foreign co-chairman. Ruling the House of Representatives were the Speakers of the House β€” Emily Rubin, Michele Levine, and Gwenn Frank. In charge of the Senate were Susan Gordon, Lynn Epstein, and Steven Epstein. Only those bills passed in committee were allowed to be debated in the House and Senate. After sessions were over, all assembled in the cafeteria for the banquet and awards ceremony. Each Oceanside chairman received an award, as well as the best speaker in each of their committees. The biggest awards were presented to the best speakers in both the House and Senate, and to the best delegation. Finally delegates began departing from the high school destined for their respective homes with many fond memories of Oceanside Model Congress 1983. However, if it were not for the enthusiasm and dedication of the entire SCOPE staff which began preparation months in advance, the Congress could not have been such a success. THE END June 26, 1983 CiC CD Clubs 223 226 Underclassmen Underclassmen 227 228 Underclassmen AROUND THE CLASSROOM by R. Schoenhaus The year 1982-1983 was a time of change. It gave us a new Student Projects' Advisor and a new administration, as it bade farewell to apathy and rebellion. A totally- fresh outlook towards spirit and involvement arose. We all yelled β€œGo-Go Buffalo, a chant that taught us how to enjoy what O.H.S. has to offer. It all started with the Homecoming weekend. People all joined together to make it one of the best ever. Nearly every club was represented in the parade of floats that marched sity Volleyball team for winning the county championship. We said good-bye to Mr. Kaplan, and welcomed Mr. Budd as the new theatrical director. To raise money, the Thespians put on a fine show, A Salute To Broadway. The second dance of the year, a ladies' choice β€” β€œSadie Hawkins, drew a crowd of almost six hundred people. Available was a marriage booth, complete with license, wedding pictures, and bouquets of flowers. Early in December was ball season united everyone, giving us a chance to support our favorite team. Once again, SCOPE hosted their annual Model Congress which proved to be very successful. Many important ideas were debated and worked out. The school musical this year was enjoyable for all. The energetic production of Funny Girl was a phenomenal accomplishment. Once again, the Blue and White teams battled for weeks. through Oceanside. Although we lost the football game, the record-breaking crowds supplied an abundance of support. That evening was O.H.S.'s first bonfire, which was followed by the first dance of the year. Although over three hundred students attended, this was only a small indication of what was ahead. We filled the stands of Hofstra University to see our boys' Varsity Soccer team compete in the playoffs. Once again Β« we congratulated the girls' Var- h 2 the first annual Oceanside District Scholarship Fund Dance Marathon. It lasted a total of twelve hours and raised a large sum of money. Further into December, in the spirit of the holiday, the Foreign Language Department sponsored a Christmas party for the senior citizens of Oceanside. Also for the season, Santa Claus made his yearly rounds to take pictures with all of his friends. The new year brought with it bigger and better things. Basket- both trying to win the sportnite title. The senior class sponsored the mother-daughter dinner in the spring, which was enjoyable to everyone. We had, for the first time, Oceanside High School shirts. As the year came to a close, we shared senior hat day, o- - senior class trip, the prom, ana nally, graduation. It was a year filled with learning and laughter. What made it so special was that it belonged to all of us. NEW FACES IN OLD PLACES by G. Kwak 1983 was a year of valuable additions to Oceanside Senior High School. The 1982-83 school year was Mr. Kraemer's first year as Principal of our high school. However, he was not genuine newcomer. He served as Associate Principal with Dr. Thomas Marcello during the 1981-1982 school year. Under his well-organized administration. and coach of several sports of the school: the G.O., SCOPE, it's Academic, baseball, gymnastics, swimming, and last but not least, the Water Buffaloes. He has proven to be an invaluable asset to the school. He has made noticeable improvements in student morale, school spirit and student participation in extracurricular activities. Graba, a new special education teacher and Elaine Jorgenson, a new addition to our already fine staff of psychologists. Mrs. Jacqueline Demakis became the new chairperson of the Foreign Language Department for the Oceanside School District. She was formerly a Spanish teacher at Oceanside Junior High School and became our new Foreign two other additions were made to the school. It was his goal to enable OHS students to have a larger role in making decisions that would have a direct result on their school experience. During the past summer, a committee consisting of ten students interviewed and selected Mr. Andrew Morris as the new Director of Student Projects. He is the advisor of several Mr. Budd is another addition made to the school by way of a student selection committee. Ten thespians interviewed and chose him to be the new director of school stage productions, replacing Mr. Kaplan. Mr. Budd's first production at OHS was Funny Girl. He had previously directed productions for summer camps. Other new faces include Ellen Language chairperson upon the retirement of Mrs. Heidi Campbell. As of yet, all of these new additions to OHS have made valuable contributions to the school and especially to the students of Oceanside High School. Hopefully, the new faces will become old faces by continuing their success at OHS. MOVIES, MOVIES, MOVIES... The week would run by so fast, and soon it would be Friday, and you would begin the usual conversation with your friends: What are we going to do tonight? I don't know. Let's do something exciting, another would say. Before you knew it, you were sitting in front of a wide screen with a cup of popcorn in your hand. Exciting? However, during our high school years, there really were some exciting flicks. Christopher Reeve captured hearts across the nation in his role as Superman in Superman: The Movie and Superman 11. The hero image was strengthened with the movie Rocky. The sequel, Rocky 11, was judged to be equally good. By the time we got to high school junior year, there was Rocky 111, which was not only a box office smash, but also a truly outstanding film which introduced one of the meanest looking men in America, Mr. T, as Clubber Lang. Steven Spielberg showed himself to be true genius with two 1982 hits: Poltergeist and E.T. E.T. not only made more money than VIDEO CRAZE The Video craze swept the nation as millions of ghosts everywhere were gobbled up by pacmen. The arcades were inundated with people and no home was complete without a home video system. The most popular systems were Atari, Intellivision, and ColecoVision. Cartridges of all types of sports and games were produced. These ranged in price from twenty to thirty dollars each. Many people were infected with any other movie of 1982, but it also made millions of dollars outside the theatre through the sale of E.T. souvenirs. This sensational movie appealed to both our humorous and sentimental sides. This is the quality which made it so special. The summer preceding our senior year produced two other fantastic pictures. An Officer and a Gentleman, starring Richard Gere, was a typical boy-meets-girl story. The World According to Garp, starring Robin Williams, was two and a half hours of edge-of-seat, breathtaking excitement. We also saw many well-done science fiction movies such as The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek I and Star Trek II. As far as the scary films went, the bad greatly outnumbered the good, but a few popular ones emerged. Halloween I, II, and III were among the most popular as well as The Alien and The Amityville Horror 1 and II. For those of you who enjoyed having a box of tissues on your lap along side the popcorn, there were many outstanding tearjerkers as well. Some of these include: The video fever. They were hopelessly hooked on the fastshooting actions of spaceships, aliens, and asteriods. Their total energy was used in performing strategic maneuvers with the joy stick. Some of the most popular games were Pitfall, Donkey-Kong, Ms. Pacman, Asteroids and Defender. The amateurs can lose a fortune playing in the arcades. However, a skilled player can operate for hours on a single quarter. by S. Epstein Champ, starring John Voight and Ricky Schroeder; Ordinary People, starring Mary Tyler Moore and Timothy Hutton; Whose Life Is It Anyway, starring Richard Dreyfuss; On Golden Pond, starring Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, and Katherine Hepburn; and Six Weeks, starring Mary Tyler Moore and Dudley Moore. What about when there was nothing to do at midnight? Well, it was off to see the sweet transvestites from transexual Pennsylvania in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Our high school years also saw the development of 3-D movies, where everyone sat with a funny-looking pair of glasses on for a few hours to get the 3-D effect. Friday the 13th Part III and Jaws III were two of the first movies to capture the audiences in three dimensions. When we look back on our high school years, we'll remember those Friday nights in the movie theatres with our friends. Whether the films we saw were a smash or a flop, we'll still remember them because they were a part of our formative years. by T. Abrams 0 Where have the days of pinball machines gone? The pinball machine still sits quietly in the corner of every arcade. Once in a while nostalgia would prompt someone to approach it. After all, it is the only game in which it is still possible to cheat a little, and see the familiar bright TILT sign light up. Video games seem to be continuously multiplying. Anything can happen when Pacman and Ms. Pacman meet. MUSICAL TRENDS by A. Bernstein This year was quite interesting for the music industry. Music flourished, with many innovations and new concepts meshing with old and established ideas to create a very interesting year. Concerts seemed to be a major preoccupation during 1982. Every major concert hall hosted many top-named bands, while many new outlets were explored. The WPLJ Dr. Pepper concert series took place at New York's Pier 84, which proved to be an optimum setting for an appearance by the Clash, possibly one of the best concerts of the year. Memories of Woodstock were also evoked twice during the year. First, a large gathering of bands occurred in Monterray in October with such groups as The Pretenders, B-52's, and Police appearing. During Thanksgiving, in Jamaica, an equally outstanding performance was given. Among the artists were the Grateful Dead, Peter Tosh, Rita Marley and the last appearance of Squeeze, in honor of Bob Marley, EIGHTEEN AND On December 3, 1982, a major event occurred in the lives of all people who were eighteen years of age. They became illegal as far as drinking was concerned. Due to the high rate of automobile accidents among teenagers, the state legislature passed a bill which raised the legal drinking age from eighteen to nineteen. Hopefully this new law will reduce the number of casualties from drunk driving; however, it is still too early to tell. and the Go-Go's. Olivia Newton-John shed her goody-two-shoes image and emerged as a provocative temptress in her Physical album. Billy Joel continued his success with two hit albums: Glass Houses and The Nylon Curtain. Though new music and changes in radio stations seemed to be a plus for the industry, record sales were frighteningly low, and record labels were not willing to take chances with new artists. They go with the mainstreamers. Ten years ago, a record needed approximately 500,000 units sold to be a top 10 hit. This year, a top ten hit needed only 100,000 units. Some say that home taping was responsible. It was very tough for new groups to get the exposure necessary for success in the industry, and as a result, 1982 was a fairly uneventful year for the record producers but all the music that blasted from our home and car stereos was high quality. one of the pioneers of Reggae music. A few new radio stations hit the scene in 1982. The biggest news of the summer was that WAPP (known as the apple ) would be commercial free for the entire summer season. Many diehard WPLJ fans started listening to WAPP due to the absence of commercials, and remained with the station after they began running commercials. The idea of commercial-free music was great for listeners while it lasted; however, it was a cheap and underhanded method to steal listeners from other stations. The second new station, or should I say revised, was WLIR. WLIR changed their format from strictly rock and roll music to new-wave. This move was probably the most innovative idea of the year and because of its uniqueness, WLIR became a very popular station. Some of our favorite pop groups were Air Supply, Hall and Oates, STILL DRY Many eighteen-year-olds have shown a great deal of contempt for this new law. They believe that if they are given certain rights of legal adults, they should also be given the right to drink. The voting age and the concept of the draft have already been questioned by many young adults. There has been a lot of controversy over this subject since it has affected many people. The social activities of all eighteen-year-olds have been by N. Mitleberg limited because they can no longer go to bars, discos, or any other place which serves liquor. Recently there has been talk about raising the drinking age to twenty-one. If this were ever to come about, the whole concept of being legal will be altered even further. This concept has already caused disruptions in our governmental system because the term legal has been Z redefined for all members of New 5 York State. W 234 Mews FADS IN FASHION by J. Littman In every fashion season, there are many items that define the newest looks. One year it may be a dramatically lengthened skirt or perhaps a shortened jacket. During the past few seasons, the world of fashion has presented us with a variety of trends that have added to our already large selection of chic apparel. Many fashions that were recently considered out of style are now thriving. The reappearance of the miniskirt heightened this fashion season. It was worn casually as β€’well as formally. For the sporty look, we saw sweatsuits used for everyday activity in a variety of pastel colors. Teamed up with the sweatsuit we had the bandana which was available in an infinite rainbow of colors. The sailor look was also quite popular in the spring. Knickers came and went but while they were here they sold like hotcakes, with girls buying several at a time. Worn with all types of shoes, they were a part of every complete wardrobe. The preppy look climbed the fashion ladder this season, Lacoste and Polo being the favorite designers. Penny-loafers reemerged as the ideal shoe. They were comfortable, casual, and a new fashion trend. Saddle shoes took on their old purpose of being a daily shoe worn with skirts as well as pants. Boots in all styles and colors became a necessary fashion accessory. Suede boots became extremely popular with their pointed toes and flat heels. Western boots managed to stay in style during the past few seasons. With boots and other shoes came the wearing of leg warmers. They were popular in the winter, but in the summer they were quickly discarded. Conche belts, studded belts and leather belts all added to the excitement of wearing pants. This past season, jod-phurs, stone-washed, over-dyed, pin-striped, tapered and pedal-pusher pants were all very popular. Looks for formal dressing ranged from the punk look of leather and leopard spots to the elegant look of taffeta and ribbons. The tuxedo look was enjoyed by all in a variety of unique styles. Costume jewelry took its turn and came back stronger than ever. Earrings were larger, and unusual shapes and were generally more exotic. They were made out of metals and every conceivable shade could be purchased to match any outfit. Rhinestones and other stones added to the costume jewelry craze. They were worn for dressing up as well as dressing down. The wide range of clothing and jewelry styles is obvious as well as the short life-span of the fads of fashion. Popular styles change at the wink of an eye. By the time you read this we might be wearing space suits and workboots. Don't laugh β€” in today's world, anything is possible β€” or should 1 say, nothing is impossible. REMEMBER WHEN ...? by T. Abrams and G. Kwak ... The year 1982 was a year in which the United States began to show more interest in a specific issue that it has since the Vietnam War. The interest in nuclear disarmament culminated in a nationwide rally on June 12. Locally, the rally took place in Central Park. Anti-nuclear marchers met in several different Manhattan locations and marched toward the Great Lawn. People displayed banners and raised their voices. It was clear that the people had an issue that about which they felt strongly. At the rally organizations passed out reading material and many boothes were set up where people could sign up for mailing lists. Tee-shirts were also sold with monies going to various anti-nuke OUT OF WORK? In 1982, unemployment could be everywhere. The number of jobless people reached a record of 10.8%, the highest since the depression. During this time economic suffering occurred throughout the country. Among the unemployed was Ronald THE PREZ Ronald Reagan's second year as president, 1982, was a busy year. During this time the people of the U.S. witnessed a decrease in both inflation and the prime interest rate, while unemployment skyrocketed. This was also the year that Reagan called for an increase in military spending including a MX-missle program, which was defeated in Congress. The budget deficit grew and new taxes were introduced in order to meet the by M. Lorge organizations. The New York rally drew an estimated 800,000 people. It was the largest peacetime demonstration ever held. Upon arriving at the rally, people set up blankets, relaxed and read material. However it wasn't long before the speakers who had been scheduled to speak commenced. Many famous people spoke, notable Orson Wells and Coretta Scott King. Several Buddhist Monks who had walked from California inspired the crowd with a melodic chant. However the most entertaining part of the rally was soon to come. The scheduled musicians took the stage. It is important to note the concerns and priorities of the musicians. It was obvious that they were not there to further their careers, but to take a stand on an issue that was important to them. Highlights included a duet between Jackson Browne and Gary U.S. Bonds of the song Dedication, Bruce Springsteen performed a chilling acoustic version of The Promised Land, and then teamed up with Jackson Browne to do a red hot version of Running on Empty. Other musicians included Rita Marley, Linda Ronstadt, and the show's final performer, James Taylor. Overall the day was not only informative but inspiring. People do still care about this world, and as evidenced on June 12,1982, a lot of people will work long to save it. by K. Muellers and R. Ventura Reagan Jr., the son of our nation's President. However, the greatest sufferers of all were the minorities and the young people of the nation. These two groups made up a large percent of the eleven million unemployed. The main concentration of these people lived in the in- by growing debt. As more and more United States' products were exported to Communist China, our nation increased its quasi-friendly relationship with this country. We watched as a war raged in South America between Great Britain and Argentina over the Falkland Islands. The U.S. Marines were called to action as part of a peace-keeping force in Lebanon. We also watched, with great concern, the death of Leonid dustrial heart of the United States and obviously reflected the declining fortunes of the auto and steel industries. But, President Reagan has assured us that the future of the economy will begin to prosper, and the number of unemployed will decline. A. Repole and S. Frank Breschnev and the election of the new Soviet Premier. All of these events which occurred in 1982 have not as yet fully developed. The future years, as Reagan completes his term, will determine the plight of the American economy, the outcome of the continued detente relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the course of world history. PAIN KILLERS KILL! by G. Frank What's happening to our world? What kind of maniacs live out there? It's gotten so that it's not safe to buy products anymore. It all started with the poisoning of Extra Strength Tylenol bottles in Chicago. Apparently, some sicko deliberately placed cyanide in bottles on the store shelves, causing the deaths of seven innocent people who ingested the capsules. People are now afraid to buy products that are not tamper-resistant. We are hesitant to purchase even a bottle of mouthwash. It's a horrible situation. It's not safe to buy food and drugs anymore. Since the Tylenol incident, we've been faced with the dangerous temperings of cold medicine, soft drinks, candy, and other drugs. Incidents like these make us how vulnerable we, as consumers, really are. Any item that is not packaged properly can be tampered with. Parents everywhere anguished about whether to deny their children Halloween fun by protecting them from candy that might be tainted. Far fewer trick-or-treaters hit the streets than in previous years and the number of parents accompanying their children seemed unusually large. It's really sad that our holidays have been affected by criminals who are willing to harm innocent people. As a result of these terrible incidents, packaging of products will be improved by the manufacturers and consumers will have confidence in over-the-counter drugs. The general public will be more aware of what they buy. It is unfortunate that it took an event such as this to force the packaging industry to improve its current methods. THE BOOB TUBE by T. Abrams Some people say that the quality of television programs has been deteriorating. Some people find these programs to be quite entertaining. Either way, TV has been changing a great deal lately. Many new shows have been introduced and old ones have been terminated. Among the new programs were some action packed stories such as β€œHill Street Blues, β€œThe Fall Guy, and Night Rider. β€œThe Powers of Matthew Star was also a popular addition. Quincy and Hart to Hart continued their success for another year. β€œGeneral Hospital kept the attention of its vast audience this season. Dynasty and Dallas were the favorites among the night-time soap operas. Thousands were addicted to these and other serials. This year the networks produc- ed a few mini-series. Most of these were dramatizations of best-selling novels. Of these, The Winds of War and Shogun were the most memorable. Many shows centered upon the sensationalism of everyday life. Some of these were Real People, The People's Court and That's Incredible. Sitcoms remained on the air as seen by the renewed contracts of The Facts of Life, The Jeffer-sons, Happy Days, and Three's Company. The faddish Square Pegs, and the traditional style Newhart were added to the list. Saturday Night Live remained the ideal late night comedy with its new cast. The Love Boat continued sailing to our weekend Fantasy Island. Dramas were also still in sight with St. Elsewhere, Little House on the Prairie and Trap- per John, M.D. A few new musical dramas have been introduced. Examples of these are the popular Fame! and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. The saddest occurrence on the TV screen this year was the departure of M.A.S.H. Many faithful viewers will be sorry to see it go. It has, however, enjoyed many successful years. Home Box Office (H.B.O.) was widespread throughout our community. Many teenagers spent hours watching their favorite musical groups on MTV. It was also possible to see many recent movies at home through H.B.O. Television has been expanding rapidly through the years. Who knows? Maybe some day, when we react to our favorite shows, the characters might be able to answer back. z n s CLASSIFIED Adam β€” Thanks for making my Jr. and Sr. years of H.S. great!
