THOMAS MARCELLO PRINCIPAL All of us make some judgments, explicitly or implicitly, concerning the objectives of education. When thinking about objectives, we must consider a number of key questions. To what extent should education be preparation for college or for employment? What kind of education is good preparation for life? What is the role of the student in relation to personality development, to health and physical fitness, and to citizenship education of each individual student? Whatever our judgments, it is important also to think in terms of how we will use what we have gained. I offer you this thought from W. H. P. Faunce: “Most Americans do value education as a business asset, but not as the entrance into the joy of intellectual experience or acquaintance with the best that has been said and done in the past. They value it not as an experience, but as a tool.” How will you value what you have gained? It is my hope that whatever your decision, you experience success, health and happiness. Combined they have devoted more than a half century to the students of Oceanside. Therefore, in appreciation we respectfully dedicate this Spindrift to our Class Advisors, Mrs. Grace Saacke and Mr. Thomas H. Fetherston. 206 Dr. William F. Tucker, Superintendent of Schools announced his retirement from the Oceanside School District in June 1982. Dr. Tucker has served as a teacher and administrator in Oceanside for thirty-three years, the last thirteen as Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Tucker is currently President of the Nassau County Association of Chief School Administrators, a member of the House of Delegates of the New York State Council of School Superintendents and a member of the N.Y. State Commissioner of Education's Advisory Council. He has served on advisory boards at Molloy College and St. John's University in the development of programs for the preparation of teachers and administrators, and he has been appointed an adjunct professor at C.W. Post University. Dr. Tucker holds Honorary Life Memberships in both State and National PTA. He has served in many state wide PTA committees and also held the office of Second Vice President of the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers. My thirty-three years in Oceanside schools have been very gratifying,” said Dr. Tucker. “I have worked with the most outstanding staff that has ever been assembled in one district, outstanding in the terms of humanity, competence and commitment to education and young people. Obviously all this would not have been possible without the support of a Board of Education whose members really care about the children and about the entire staff as people. I have been fortunate to work in a community that places high values on education. Parental aspirations are very well represented by an active and articulate PTA leadership with whom I have enjoyed working.” Dr. Tucker was born in Kingston, N.Y., is a graduate of the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, and earned the degree of Doctor of Education at New York University. “Coming to Oceanside was one of my better decisions,” says Dr. Tucker. My family and I have found the people most responsive, both personally and professionally. We have made many friends here, and professionally I doubt that there is any community more supportive of sound education.” 207 We acknowledge the utimely passing of Bernice Roseman, whose positive outlook was a source of inspiration to all with whom she came in contact. A deep sense of loss will be constantly with us. Bernice Roseman Harry Chapin Harry Chapin was a local entertainer and composer who by combining elements of folksinging and rock, devised his won story songs” describing lost opportunities, cruel twists of fate, and disappointments in love. Chapin, also persistent social activist, gave benefit concerts to raise money for a variety of causes and organizations. He raised thousands of dollars for the Performing Foundation of Long Island for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, for environmental and consumer causes and for a campaign to combat world hunger. In 1979, Jimmy Carter named Chapin a commissioner on the Presidential Council on World Hunger. Chapin was killed in an automobile accident near Huntington, Long Island. Although he shall be missed, his music will keep his memories alive. Others who have touched our lives: William Holden portrayed a tough, romantic hero in scores of films, won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a prisoner of war in Stalag 17 (1953). He died November 16, 1981 in his home in Santa Monica, California. Natalie Wood was an endearing child actress who captivated audiences as the little girl in Miracle on Thirty-Fourth Street. She was later to evolve into one of Hollywood’s most beautiful actresses. Natalie Wood died as a result of a boating accident. Her charm and talent shall be missed by many admirers. 208 Anwar Sadat, born December 25, 1918, was President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. He was a man of peace whose efforts to create an atmosphere of harmony and understanding in the Middle East earned him world wide recognition and acclaim. Named as the “Man of the Year” by Time Magazine in 1977, assassins’ bullets ended his life on October 6, 1981. Moshe Dayan, born May 20, 1915, was an Israeli military hero and political leader. His efforts in the cause of international peace earned him world wide recognition for the peace treaty of March 26, 1979. Mr. Dayan died of natural causes on October 16, 1981. One day, in the year 2022, a senior decided to play the usual trick on a sophomore and sent him to the pool on the third floor. When the nervous sophomore arrived on the supposed third floor, a glimmer of light inadvertantly caught his eye. His curiosity led him to the object which caused this reflection. When the sophomore moved toward the artifact, he found that it was a class ring from the year 1982. A few steps further led him to a piece of paper. When unfolded, the student found a very faint handwriting which appeared to be that of a student ................................ Dear. . Hi! What's new? I'm in homeroom now. My teacher is trying to quiet us down but no one wants to hear the announcements. I’d better listen............... “Good morning. Happy New Year and welcome back. We hope you enjoyed your vacation. Today there will be a mandatory meeting of. . I can’t believe how many meetings I have today after school. Hi again, I'm in first period now and I just got screamed at by my teacher because I walked in two seconds after the bell rang. It's not my fault I have to go from the far end of the south wing to the north wing (and of course I have to stop at my locker to gossip with friends.) I have to take notes now ... I'm getting confused. It’s so hard to wake up first I’ll write you later. . . I'm in third now. I couldn’t write second because I had a killer of a math test. I studied for hours and I think I did fairly well, but I’m not sure about the last question. When you take the test, tell me how you think it was. I think I really did well, though. During the test the teacher walked around, stopped at my desk and looked at my paper. When he smiled. I took it as a good sign. Now I'm in Young Lawyers. I’m writing this while the other trial is going on. I'm so nervous because my trial is next. I'm a lawyer and we re supposedly suing the other team for false advertising. I hope we win. The jury from the other case went outside to deliberate. Then they will announce the verdict. I have to get ready. Wish me luck! I'm back. The jury is deciding who will win my trial. We did fairly well. There are only a few minutes until the bell. I hope they hurry. Hi again. We won!! It's fourth period now — English. It's my favorite class. Now we .e reading Othello and in a week we re going to see the play in the city. How was your vacation? Mine was great. I spent a few days with my brother in college and went to a lot of parties. The people there are so nice. I hope I get into a good college. No. I hope I get into college! While I was there, I had an interview. I'm so glad the interviewer didn't ask me about my SAT scores. Anyway, he was really nice and our discussion went quickly. I think I might want to go there. Where do you want to go? When I came home, I just hung out. I spent some time at the usual place, but 226 it was really beat. Didn't you have the best time on New Year's at the party? We re actually the class of 82 now! The period is almost over. We’re going to lunch next. I'm so hungry. Hi. I just came back from lunch at the diner. I'm on a diet, so all I had was a small salad. It took so long for them to serve us and we had only five minutes to get back to the school. Of course, when we got back we had lost our parking space, so we had to park on the side street. We all arrived late to class and had to sign in. So here I am. I finally made it to Physics. We have a lab today, something with mirrors. The teacher is explaining now. Oh-oh, I’d better stop. He's looking right at me. I'll write later. Bye for now . . . Would you believe I have to sit and wait during eighth period for my meetings after school? We really should hold meetings after seventh period. What did I do after I wrote last? Oh — my Physics teacher came over to my desk and threatened to read this to the whole class. Then we did our lab. When we checked the results, I had 113% error. Seventh period I had gym. I was going to cut the class, but I went anyway. We did slimnastics. They're exhausting, but fun. Did you go to the basketball game the other night? I’m so glad we won. The crowd was excellent. They just kept cheering the team on and we won, 35 to 18. The girls’ basketball game is this Friday. I’m sure we ll win. Did you go to Homecoming? The football team played a great game and won. It made the dance outrageous because everybody was in a great mood. I'm so bored and hungry that I just ate a bag of M M's (So much for the diet). It’s 2:15 and the bell is about to ring. I'll finish writing later. I’m home now. I had so many meetings to go to after school that I couldn't give you this note. What happened on General Hospital today? Was Laura found? Did Ann and Noah get together? The Key Club meeting was very short today. We re selling candy for the Oceanside Scholarship Fund. It seems I’m always carrying boxes of candy to sell for some club. We talked about writing articles at the Sider Press meeting. I was assigned to write an article about the Girls’ Volleyball Championship for the next issue. When you have a chance, I'd like to interview you. I also had a S.C.O.P.E. meeting this afternoon. We will have the Oceanside Model Congress next week. There’s so much work to be done before then. I was assigned to the Senate Judiciary committee, and I volunteered to have four people sleep in my house. I don't even have time to do my homework anymore! (Do you see signs of senioritis?) Whether or not I have senioritis, I still can’t believe graduation is in five months. We re going to be measured for our caps and gowns this week. It’s so sad. The more I think about it. the more I realize how much I have learned about myself and others during these past three years. I can understand how people say that high school years are the best years of your life. Although there have been many days when I have dreaded the thought of waking up early and coming to school. I know deep down that I will truly miss this place, the memories it holds and the people I have met here. Well it’s time to go. I'll see you before homeroom tomorrow morning. Write back soon. Take care, Quite some time has passed since the sophomore had first begun to read the note. He was somewhat surprised, for this note had entirely changed his perspective of school life. While he had dreaded his years in high school, he now looked forward to them. He felt fortunate to know what rewards and treasures Oceanside High School could offer to its students. 227 Introducing.. The festivities were kicked off by a spirited parade which followed a route down Long Beech Road and terminated at the High School. Here Oceanside witnessed what many believed to be the highlight of the day. The OHS varsity Football Team defeated Uniondale by a score of 35-21. The victory was celebrated at a GO-sponsored dance in the cafeteria. All agreed the dance was a big success. Homecoming proved to be a winning day for a winning school. 233 Halloween Although Halloween fell on a Saturday, it was quite obvious that the school was spooked the day before. Many O.H.S. students came to school dressed in various costumes ranging from a token Halloween witch to a puzzling Rubik s Cube. Of course there were several mischievous students who believe in the institution of tricks rather than treats. One of the treats of the day, however, occurred during the sixth and seventh periods when the In-Depth theater class presented their talents by bringing their costumes to life. Each student was given the opportunity to take part in an improvisation based on his or her costume. The project was educational as well as enjoyable for those who participated in it. 234 Valentine’s Day Cupid arrived at Oceanside High School a few days early this year, but that did not stop the fun! Many of us were surprised in homeroom when we received beautiful carnations. These tokens of affection were brought to you by the Senior Class. Although the O.H.S. cafeteria is no tunnel of love, with a little imagination it became a chic French cafe. The French Club, which sponsored this unique event, sold homemade crepes as well as Hershey's Kisses. In addition to the sweets, music was provided to create a totally enjoyable atmosphere. 235 There are Harry Cha ‘wo roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it tent in the undergrowth; Then took tl e other, as just as fair,. « And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there • nthem really about the same, Dojh that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black.
