Physical Education and Health Services THOMAS MARCELLO Principal We are living in an age of rapid and widespread social, economic and political change. In the United States, the overall pattern, and specific nature of these changes are fundamentally altering the character of American society. Yours, more than any generation, will live with the results of this fundamental alteration. To he educated will be a must and to keep your individuality will he difficult. I offer you the wisdom of Felix E. Schelling: “True education makes for inequality; the inequality of individuality, the inequality of success; the glorious inequality of talent, of genius; for inequality, not mediocrity, individual superiority, not standardization, is the measure of the progress of the world. I wish you success, health, happiness, and above all — individuality. ■J Thomas Marcello Paul Arms Chairperson — Math Department Concettina Andrews Social Studies Vincent Agoglia Business Harriet Bald) Daniel Bashner Guidance Lois Bassen English Helene Bell English Robert Benson Industrial Arts Jane Belter Foreign Language Robert Bocchicchio Math John Brunetti English Sue Braca Guidance Jeanette Bohdal Art Frank Catalano Music Lawrence Cascio Foreign Language Heidi Campbell 'hairperson Foreign Language Department Joan Cegelski Adult Education Marianne Clisham English Louise Cobb Remedial Reading Michael Cohen Psychologist Shirley Cohen Clerk Patricia Davis Imbro Special Education .awrence I) Science Joseph Del Giorno Guidance xeorge Alan Diamond Business Susan Doll Math Joel Edelstein Science Dolores Ehrlich Guidance Theodore Ehrman Social Studies John Ellis Science Florence Esrig Senior Library Clerk Milton Fajan: English Russell Falzone Science Irene Fantini Clerk Rochelle Felson Business Carmine Ferraro Math Marjorie Ferrugio Social Studies Thomas Fetherston Nancy Fields Work Experience Madeline Firriolo English Manelte Fokken Physical Education Nancy Fodors Clerk Gilda Fischer Nurse Nicholas Gavalas Chief Psychologist Willa Garnick English Ira Gibel Health Kducation David Goldstein Foreign Language Kiehard Graffigino Science Shelly Grossman Foreign Language Martin Halpern Science t.laire l rauer Foreign Language Donald Hammer Science Harold Hanson Social Studies Florence Hart Instructional Assistant Social Studies John Hay ■sical Education Marie Heinze Math Frances Heller Business Gloria Hollmann Clerk Kenneth Hendler Physical Education Robert Higgins Foreign Language Carol Hudak Principal Typist Clerk Morton Horowitz Science Barbara Huegler Home Economics Alan Huisaver Math Raymond Imbro Work Experience Lori Jacobson Social Worker Frank Januszewski Physical Education Rob Johnson Business Rita Kaikow Librarian Barry Kaplan English John Kellchcr English Roy Kessenich Pin sical Education Richard Korn English Vivian Krohn Social Studies Florence heavy Foreign Language Lillian Leneh Communin Aide Natalie Lewis Home Economies Michael Limmer Health Harriet Linden Instructional Assistant English John McMullan Math Anna Lyon Administrative Assistant Roy Mackie Science William Manuel Driver Education Joseph Marino English John IVlancuso Industrial Arts Robert Moltisanti Business Thomas Montefinisc Social Studies Anita Morrell Foreign Language James Mulvey Social Studies Ruth Mulherin Instructional Assistant Special Ed. Michael Rabinowitz The Harrowing Ordeal of Fifty-Two On a particular January afternoon, million of New Yorker and out-of-(owners lined Broadway, waving American flag , wearing yellow ribbon , and shouting the praise of 22 brave American who final!) came home. The 22. led by Brooklynite Barry Ko cn. did not consider thenvwlve heroes, but accepted the festivity with shock and delight. It was the final touch to a long line of welcomes and celebrations, and they just couldn't believe it was all for them. The entire ordeal started on November 4. 1979 when Iranian militants stormed the American embassy in Tehran and took 98 people hostage. It was an act protesting the United States welcome of the Shah to America in October for medical purposes. American were shocked but saw some hope when 45 of the hostages were released about a month later. They stated the Iranian's demands. They wanted the Shah. They wanted to punish him for the hideous acts of his regime, under their new leader. Ayotol-lah Khomeini. When Christmas came and the hostage were still not home, for the first time since W orld War II. we , as American , seemed to share a common purpose to show Iran that we believed in our country and refused to be pushed around. It would, however, be a long time before we would see all of them home again. Time wore on and we counted the days of their captivity. With the death of the Shah and a failed rescue attempt in which eight servicemen died, the situation looked more and more hopeless, and people were losing faith in President Carter and his administration. Then, during the summer of 1980, Richard (Jueen was released due to a mysterious illness, which was later diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. He settled back into a normal routine of his formal everyday life and revealed minimal information about hi Iranian captor . Hi fellow hostage remained in Iran, their release being transformed into an issue of the Presidential election. Carter' loss was in part attributed to hi inability to free the hostages. Then in January , the day before Ronald Reagan wa to be sworn in a President, the new came. Mr. Carter had spent all of his last night a President finishing up negotiations with the Iranians via Algerian diplomats. The hostages would soon be free. In Iran. 52 confused and taunted Americans were herded onto a plane and were flown to Athens. Greece. After 444 days of pain, solitude and suffering, they were out of Iran. A day later, all programs on American TV were interrupted and a telecast, via satellite, from an Algerian transmission showed the hostages coming off a plane and getting their first taste of freedom. They were turned over to U.S. authorities and flown to Weisba-den. West Germany. They stayed there for about a week to be examined, both physically and mentally. Doctors found that none of them were severely hurt physically and only some showed mental fatigue or strain. However, they warned that some of their difficulties in dealing with normal life again may arise later, and it might be dangerous to treat them a heroes. But, Americans were prepared to treat them as just that. From Weisba-den. we heard the Tint descriptions of life as a hostage, and the hostage were able to communicate with their families back home. Some of the hostages were angry and bitter, and others just lucky to be alive. From Weisbaden the hostages flew home stopping on the way at Shannon, Ireland. All along the way they were honored. When they arrived at Stewart Air Force Base in New York, and on their way to West Point, they were greeted by hundreds of thousands of proud Americans. They also were finally able to meet with their families in private. Later, they were treated to a night on the town in New York City and were honored by President Reagan at the White House. Some of the hostages then went home and were honored by their nati e states while the rest ended their long and harrowing ordeal with the jubilant parade on Broadway. Whatever may come of this, whether it concerns the personal lives of the former hostage or whether it concerns the integrity of the United btales, one thing will certainly be remembered, that for just a little while, we as Americans, stood tall as one. Karen Rothenberg “You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one. ' John Lennon Remembered For many of us, our lives have been shaped or at least influenced by people with whom we have never even come in contact. These people are the individual the ones who dare to be different. Not satisfied with following the beaten path, they reach within themselves and bring out the anomalies which have been suppressed. These idiosyncracies are what keep humanity dymanic, for without them, we would remain at a standstill and never progress. Those who do opt for the road not taken are what may be called “trendsetters.'' They are received initially as radicals — people who are trying to usurp the old standards. Yet, these “old standards'' are nothing more than the radical trends of yesteryear. These few have turned what was once socially unacceptable into cornerstones in our present society. Many feel that John Lennon was such a man. If any one person can be held accountable for the thinking and lifestyles of the sixties and seventies, it would be he. From his start with the Beatles, John had always been that rare individual who did not go along with the flow because it was the easiest thing to do. He wore his hair long when no one else did because he wanted to. He played what wa then considered loud, blaring rock because that was what he wanted. He brought love and peace into the open and taught us how to be true to ourselves. However, one of the most important things that he taught us is that we should search for what will make us happy, remembering not to hurt others in the process. His life is proof that this search can be made without causing others pain. Whether he had ever found happiness in his lifetime is something that we will never know. As I gaze into his picture on my wall. I see the face of a man in pain; a man who gave us so much, and never asked for anything in return except for love. John Lennon had been a security blanket for us through the sixties and some of the seventies. He had given us hope when we had lost all of our own. Now that he is gone we must not look for others to lead us, but find strength within ourselves. John's dream was to have everyone find this inner strength, as he did, and live in peace with one another. He will never be able to see this take place, but his music remains to revitalise us when our search for truth seems endless.
