Some sent from far, some from near. Clever sayings, witty, true. They bring us laughter; make us blue. Some may pierce our hearts like knives. Some we’ll cherish through our lives. Values, strengths that we have found; Music heard, echoes resound. Reflections of our school years past. Deep in our hearts they’ll always last. Friendships made of bonds so strong. The links will hold our whole lives long. And when our lives take different ways, i’ll have these messages from younger days. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. The following pages include some more advice — messages to the graduating class of Ocean-side High School from people we admire in the arts, in government, in science, and in sports. Your graduation is an achievement for each one of you, an achievement of which you should be proud. The Class of 1978 faces a world fraught with peril but it is also a world rich with possibility. In your adult lifetimes, it is possible that you will see a world where no child grows up hungry, or permanently disadvantaged through early malnutrition; a world where the threat of nuclear destruction is nothing more than an exotic memory; a world populated with human beings who live in dignity and pride and no longer feel the need to act out of cruelty, vengeance or retribution. You may actually see a new generation not cowed by the omni presence of cancer. And your actions will contribute. You can make these dreams realities. I salute you and I wish you well. It’s especially important for young people to realize that today. We live in a time where the print media constantly fans the fire of competition. Doing one’s best no longer seems to be important — it is always the question of who or what is Number One — who or what is in the Top 10, the Bottom 10 — the best this, and the worst that. Young people are bombarded with that message from the pages of newspapers and magazines daily. In my opinion, it could wreak more violence on their minds than all of the police shows combined. For that reason the definition of happiness above would be the first thing that I’d like to pass along to youngsters today. You’re all smarter than I am. I never got past the fourth grade. I had to help support my mother and eleven brothers and sisters by the time I was seven. But from experience, I would say learn to read, to write and be able to do arithmetic. The rest of the subjects are up to you. And if you start to smoke, be sure and smoke El Producto cigars. You see, if I plug them, I get a supply free. That’s something you’ll learn as you grow older. Seriously, study hard and try to have fun while you’re doing it. Good luck. Lisa Wonsever Elizabeth Woods 95 To the Students of Oceanside Senior High Whatever you choose to do or become in your life, always be honest with yourself and honest to others. Set your goals and never lose sight of them, though your road of achievement may be a long and difficult one. And remember, every day has a “plus” in it. By that I mean something good comes out of each and every day whether it’s a very small gain or a large goal finally reached. In between what may seem to be a lot of hardships and disappointments there will always be that plus,” and in the end success will be yours if you keep a positive, optimistic attitude. If there is one social studies concept that I would recommend to the class of 1978 it is this: You should accept the diversity of cultures that you find in the outside world. Avoid the temptation to hate those that differ from you and have the courage to speak up in defense of cultural pluralism. I am convinced that if this country is to survive as an independent nation, we must learn to respect the dignity of all people. I have faith that the class of 1978 will carry forth this concept. Mrs. Schwartz will remain in our memories as a warm, caring friend and teacher. She shared our personal experiences and encouraged us to succeed beyond our hopes. We remember how she put us at ease when we came for extra help or advice by relaxing with us at the back of the room. Mrs. Schwartz placed a great emphasis not only on learning, but on the learning process. For an entire week, the 18th century came alive in room S118 as her classes delved into A Tale of Two Cities. This special woman concerned herself with learning on all levels by creating and developing an individualized curriculum which emphasized basic skills. Mrs. Schwartz never hesitated to express her satisfaction and pride in our progress. This was evident in the lengthy comments she wrote on every written assignment. Every student who had the privilege of being in her class and sharing her enthusiasm for life and for learning will remember her always. 123 TUDENT Marjorie Hoblin Administrative Aide Lillian Lench Community Aide ■ r Carol Cole Instructional Assistant Florence Hart Instructional Assistant Judith Donnelly Nurse Sondra Dillon Instructional Assistant Paule Stern son Instructional Assistant Genevieve Pelgrim Administrative Aide Gilda Fischer Nurse Irene Fantini Instructional Assistant Amy Wong Instructional Assistant 24 CIVIL Vivian Wulbern Marilyn Feinberg Gloria Hollman Elizabeth Dunwoody Carol Hudak Florence Esrig V' Helen Frank Ellen Hughes Margaret Pepe Florence Stein 125 CUSTODIAL STAFF Row 1: T Nugent; Row 2: E. On behalf of the State of Connecticut, it is indeed a privilege to extend my words of tribute to the dedi cated young men and women of the “Class of '78.'' Through your diligent work, perseverance and commitment to scholastic excellence, you will soon be completing your years at Oceanside. This is both an ending and a beginning: the end of successful high school years and the beginning of a period of further education or a career. There are many considerations which will influence your choice, including your own special needs and interests. These factors will certainly provide the greatest insights and best guides for decisions you make throughout your lives. At this important time, a look at American history will provide inspiration for the future. Ours is a young nation. Yet there exists a great wealth of tradition and an abundance of men and women who throughout the years have dedicated their lives to the highest ideals of human endeavor. As the future leaders of our nation, you have the responsibility to continue and enrich our great tradi tions, and to create new opportunities which will add to the purpose and direction of these founding principles. I know you will use your valuable skills and abilities to meet this challenge. Cordially, Be yourself. Look inside to find those things that make you unique in the universe, and be willing to share that completely. Share yourself, then, knowing that you can make an incredible contribution to all the life around you. P.S. Be happy, don’t worry. 162 Man is filled with preconceptions from which he must be freed so that he may see life as an unfolding process. He will then be able to decode the signals with which he is constantly bombarded and know what is right for him and for others who may be seeking him for the relationships that they, too, need. If one is not true to one’s self in this respect, if one does not reveal the truth of his own being, then it is not possible to be true to others. Perhaps this is what is meant by young people when they speak of being ’’real as compared to “unreal. JONAS SALK 163 Football VARSITY Standing: W. Turney, R. Abrams. J. Failla, J. Bilello, M. In the last match of the season, against Hempstead; the Sailors started nine sophomores in thirteen weight classes and shut out their opponents 73-0, establishing a school scoring record. Seniors Mitch Wexler, Ron Meltzer, and Richard Mills provided most of the scoring punches for the Sailors this year. Other seniors who contributed to the team included: Larry Rowe, Frank Papalia, Ed Cummings, and Joe Santoli, a first year man who finished with a 4-8 mark in his rookie year as a wrestler. Unfortunately, Ron Meltzer, MacArthur Tournament champion, was hurt at the end of the season. The team missed his presence. Si - 5fft 183 GOLF TEAM D. Krantz, J. Shields, J. Rubins, M. Simon, S. It takes good schools, good teachers, and money. Lots of it. More than many families can afford. If you’ve got the brains for college but not the cash, the Army can help. With a new plan that lets you start college at the same time you enlist. The plan is called Project AHEAD (Army Help for Education and Development). Through Project AHEAD you choose from over 1300 participating schools, the college, university, or vocational-technical school you want to graduate from. If you’re accepted by the college of your choice, and by the Army, you're in Project AHEAD. And the Army pays up to 75% of your tuition and fees for approved courses. Project AHEAD isn’t the easiest way to earn a degree. You’ll be a soldier full-time, and a student part-time. But if a college education is what you want, we’ll help you get it. Call Army Sgt.
